I will be registering on Thursday, payday. I will be driving in Saturday morning and staying thru Wednesday or Thursday for a convention. Right now I have reservations at the Hampton Inn just a few blocks away from Mandalay Bay, but will change it if I find a better rate at one of the closer hotels. And the good news keeps coming, from the RnR Las Vegas website:
Finish Line Festival
Finishing a marathon or half marathon in Vegas calls for an all-out, rockin’ party! Celebrate your accomplishment with live music, refreshments and beer just outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. As a special reward, each race participant will receive one FREE MGD 64 light beer*, which will also be available for cash purchase in designated areas.

That is AWESOME news!! Last year only the first 3 miles or so were on the strip and the rest of the course was in an industrial area. This is so much better!!

I'm so glad they changed up the course! Hopefully this year they'll have more aid stations because the amount they had last year sucked! They said there would be water every mile last year....not true at all. I'm glad RNR took over for Devine!

One minor concern.....the half has a 4 hr timelimit, one section of the website mentioned that it was gun time, not chip time. Another section mentioned the half would have a wave start. It has taken me 50-55 minutes to get to the start line in past RnR events I have done (San Antonio and Nashville) and I wasn't even in the last corral. Should be interesting......

Oooooo, I'm sooooo jealous of those who are doing this! Having the entire half on the strip is so cool. Hopefully those that can't do it this year will sign up for next year's event and we'll have some WISH company. Pat, were you able to find out anything more about the 4-hour gun time allotment? John and I are thinking of signing up afterall, but I wanted to take it easy and not have to kill myself to finish. Nashville had about 30,000 entrants and it took a little over an hour to get over the start line. I wonder how many people this one will get.

No I haven't. I just figured I wasn't going to worry about it.....the course is extremely flat and I'm guessing you could take it to the sidewalks if the roads opened up. I am sure you'd be fine! The Seattle expo folks said Vegas was filling up fast, which may or may not be true....just don't wait too long to make a decision and then find they sold out.

07-23-2009, 09:54 AM
As mentioned, we are leaving Vegas on the 5th, the day before the marathon. If we stayed to the 7th we'd be there for 10 nights. I like Vegas, but 10 nights is a lot even for us. In the back of my mind I still wanted to go though, especially since this was a new course. Up and back on the strip! Can't get any better than that. That's actually why I want to run the half instead of the full as the full looks pretty boring after you reach mile 9 or so.
I have been checking everyday to see if any frequent flier flights opened up on the 7th or even later in the day on the 6th. There was always one flight available but not 2 (wife and I). Day before yesterday, there were no flights available. Bummer! Thought my hopes were dashed.
Checked yesterday and there were 2 now available for the 7th! Called and booked them, booked my hotel - Excalibur is having another special, extended my rental car. I was just waiting to receive the conf email from the airline then I will book the marathon (only non refundable part here).
I received the email but forgot my wallet today :confused3 So, I am going, just haven't signed up yet and won't until tonight!
Of course I need to fly from Vegas to LA (wrong direction), LA to Miami (flying right over my home), then Miami back to Ft Myers. Actually only adds an additional 90 minutes to the flight so not too bad.
YAHOO!
Can't wait!

I just can't see spending $35 on a pasta dinner when there are so many cheaper options to choose from in LV. I don't like to eat a heavy meal the night before a race so I know it wouldn't be worth it to me. As for taking pics with "top" LV perfomers - hmmm. Last year we ate with Anne and Robert at the Wynn and the hostess gave us a great table near the buffet since we were wearing our medals. My Fellow Elvi
With the race less than three weeks away, we wanted to take this opportunity to update you on the fun Elvi activities we have planned for you. As anyone who has run a race as Elvis will tell you, you are about to achieve a personal best for race fun!
• On Saturday, December 5 at 2pm, please come dressed in your Elvi best and bring your cameras for a group photo at the Finish Line, which is located in the parking lot adjacent to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center (at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd. S and Russell Rd).
• Immediately following, we will head to the Expo Clinics stage, located inside the Expo, for the Elvi pep rally, which will begin at 3pm and will commence with a Running Elvi parade through the Expo hall and beyond!!!
• At 5pm, doors will open for the Official Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Pasta Party, which will take place in Mandalay Bay’s South Pacific Ballroom and be highlighted by the Elvis karaoke and costume contests for great prizes. Tickets are selling fast. Reserve now before they’re all gone. http://las-vegas.competitor.com/training/pre-race-pasta-party-at-mandalay-bay/
At 5am on race morning, we will gather in the Shark Reef food court located just inside the entrance to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. We will be joined by all of the couples who will tie the knot or renew their vows at the Run-Thru Wedding Ceremony and the Running Reverend, along with tons of media.
At 5:15am, you will be escorted to the front of the start line and introduced to a field of more than 25,000 runners and walkers as we pose for a start line photo for the worldwide media covering the race. Once the media gets their shots, you will be escorted to a special mid-pack corral (14) which will be comprised of your fellow Running Elvi, the Run-Thru Wedding Ceremony couples, their Running Wedding Parties and the Running Reverend for the start of the race.
After we cross the start line as a group, you are free to join us at the mile 3.5 Run-Thru Wedding Ceremony location (Paris Las Vegas), or you may run at your own pace if you are running for time. If you prefer to skip the race day festivities, all Running Elvi have the option to switch your corral at the Expo at no charge and start the race from a corral based on your predicted finish. Please do NOT call or email your corral change requests.
Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving. We wish you all the best for a good time and a great time at Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas.
I am having an issue finding a costume. Especially one I might want to run in. So I won't know until we get closer.
enjoy,
Duane

Not sure if anyone's still wondering about the time limit, but I contacted two of the RNR people (one through Facebook and one through the email on the website) and both said that the 4 hours starts after the last person crosses the finish line. In my question, I did mention that the website states the time limit is based on gun time but neither person responded saying that the website was wrong, just that it's after the last person. This is my first time walking a half, so I'm really hoping they're right and that I will have at least four hours to finish.

Thanks, I did 8 miles today at a 15:26 pace, so I'm feeling a lot more prepared for next weekend. I think my bigger worry now is getting back to the hotel before the 11am check-out. I may just have to check-out before heading over to the start line!

Hi All,
and yes I am in Vegas. The wedding party left yesterday and we checked into the rented timeshare behind the Flamingo. Looking for a fun week.
If anyone will be here on Saturday they are having a Santa Run. They will be trying to break the record for the most Santa's running at one time. Your registration also includes the Santa costume. They couldn't make it any easier. http://www.lasvegassantarun.org/

When you check-in, request to have a late check-out. Request 1 pm and they may agree or offer you a noon check-out. Tell them you are running in the race and do not think you will be back by 11 am.
If any of you are on Facebook, the RnR Las Vegas fan page has people trying to set-up a Sunday night meet-up. The time and place has yet to be decided, but there is a growing interest.

I was just looking at the weather for this weekend. Did anyone else see there are freeze warnings for the next couple nights?!?
Sunday is supposed to be a low of 42 and a high of 54. I'm a bit worried about staying warm enough. I was already planning to wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. I also have a throwaway sweatshirt and gloves. I was going to wear a cap, but now I'm thinking it might be a good idea to buy something to cover and keep my ears warm. Any suggestions?
(BTW, I live in Phoenix which is why those temps seem cold to me.)

I agree this overnight cold gives me chills :) Not sure what I am wearing as I was waiting to see if I could find and Elvis costume. Of course I found some but I can't justify spending the money they want for it though. So, I did bring a throwaway sweat suit. Looks like I might need to wear it.
As of the hat, I don't really need one just need to keep my ears warm. A while back I bought a Halo sweat band. I have their visor and love it but saw this at a bike shop. I can put it over my ears to keep them warm then when it warms up I just use it like a regular sweatband. Call around the bike shops.
Also somewhere like Kohl's has earmuffs in all their stores. At least I can buy them in S Florida so I assume they would have them in your area.
My wife and I did sign up for the Santa Run on Saturday so that should be fun.
See everyone soon!

Hi Vegas RNR WISHers! I have not checked in here in quite some time. Is there a set up place or time that WISH members are going to meet at either the expo, race start or finish? I'm going to be at the expo tomorrow(Friday) around 11:30 or 12:00. Anyone else going then? My husband and I are in corral 8 for the race.
Duane, I see you are in town. I hope you and your wife are having fun. That's great that you are going to do the Santa Run, you too, Chester.

This cold is going to make the race interesting. I have not run in weather like this before.
I bought a throwaway sweatshirt from Goodwill last week along with a $1 beanie to keep me warm at the start and I can tuck my gloves away in my hydro belt. I will be getting those warmers as well.

If you know of a place to meet a the start/finish let us know as I've do not know the layout. I'll be walking over from the Flamingo around 4:30 i guess.

We finally got home from Las Vegas. Left yesterday at 7:40 AM and got home today at 11:50 AM. Couple of plane malfunctions and a night in Dallas. Yahoo!
Anyway it was a great race. I feel bad as I didn't meet up with any Wishers. I left my home computer at home and it had the cell phone numbers in it, I thought. Only yesterday did I realize that they were online in my private messages - DUH! So, I didn't get to see anyone.
On Saturday we did the Great Santa Run. They were trying to set a record for the most Santa's at a race. http://www.lasvegassantarun.org/ Great time (but cold).
Friday around noon I went to the Expo. Very well organized, sped right through. They gave out a nice black LV tech shirt. I like it. I had to move corrals as they had me in 14 since I originally was going to run as Elvis. But I had trouble finding a suit. OK, I found a suit but had trouble spending $120 for a one time use Elvis suit. Just couldn't spend the money so I ran as me. Anyway they didn't even ask for proof at the corral change and moved me to 6. Never even looked at our numbers when we went into the corrals either. Anyway, the expo was nice although a lot smaller than Disney I thought. Prices bout the same
First part of the EXPO was all the Vegas themed stuff. All I bought was a magnet. They had a cool hat but I don't wear hats. By Saturday I thought more about it and went back to buy the hat. There were none. Oh well, I had the chance of Friday. They also had a matching jacket for $90 but I had to pass on that too. I rarely wear a jacket down here.
Race morning was -12 degrees. OK, it was closer to the high 30's or low 40's but for a Florida boy that might as well have been -12. Got up at 3:30 and drove over to the MGM to park since it was the closest hotel on my side of the strip (couldn't drive across the strip). There were hundreds of marathoners at the MGM. I think this was the kick off hotel for one of the charity groups. I followed the crowds and took the sissy way to the start. Over to Excalibur then took the tram to Mandalay Bay then walk though the hotel/convention area to get close to the start. Nice having real bathrooms along the way
I walked around the staging area for a while but didn't see anyone I knew. I waited until the last 20 minutes to turn in my checked bag. I had on 2 pair of running pants and a pair of shorts, a long sleeve shirt with two running jackets, a stocking cap they gave out and a hat and gloves. All I took off was the extra pair of sweat pants. I also packed a dry shirt it the bag - came in handy!
About 15 minutes before the start I went to my corral. No problem getting in. Celine Dion sang American the Beautiful then Cher sang the Star Spangled Banner. They started the elite women about 10 or 15 minutes before the men so they could basically meet at the finish. Not sure how that turned out. Had a few fireworks but not that impressive.
At the start they started one wave at a time. Had the next wave move up then started them. Kind of neat as each wave had it's own start but I am sure it slowed down the start. I was about 4 minutes behind the clock time. I wanted to go for a PR in this race as it was flat and cold. Not to be, missed by 5 minutes. Right from the start I didn't feel "fresh". I kept the pace for the first 8 miles but couldn't keep it up. Not sure what it was, the 10 days of over eating in Vegas, the cold (really affected my lungs but not that bad until later), or probably the main reason is that I am not in as good of shape as I thought I was.
Anyway they start you out going South away from the main strip for close to a mile then you turn and go North right down Las Vegas Blvd! This was pretty neat. Plenty of fan support, awesome sights, great bands every mile or so and plenty of water stations along the way. We went North a little past the Stratosphere but not quite to downtown. That would have been neat. Made a big turnaround over a few blocks then straight back to Mandalay Bay. Basically an out and back which was fine as we were on the strip.
Right about mile 11, I think it was, they have the full go off to the right out into the suburbs and the half folks stay on the strip. I was so glad I was doing the half. Couldn't have done a full that day. Up until now I could still see runners coming up the strip. There were a lot of people there. It wasn't until around mile 11 that I stopped seeing people on the other side. It was also neat seeing the elite runners coming up the strip. Man are they fast!
This was my first big race outside of Disney. I thought they did a great job. Actually liked the idea I could show up literally 10 minutes before the start and still get into my corral with plenty of time. Plenty of bathrooms right by the start and no issue getting back into your corral. That was nice. Everything was right there. Bag drop, restrooms, coffee and start.
If I had to do it again, even though this time I had no choice, I would go out race weekend then vacation after the race. I really think the 10 days vacation prior hurt the race effort. Had a great time even though I didn't meet up with anyone. We'll meet up in Disney!
Would I do it again? Maybe if I was going out around that time. I wouldn't go just for the race though. I think the only disappointment was the race was run in daylight. By the time we all go to the strip it was daytime so the hotels weren't all lit up or if they were it didn't matter much.
Just checked - you can see yourself cross the finish line. What an awesome feature! http://las-vegas.competitor.com/features/finishreplay/ Just type in my bib 14724 and you can see the finish. I am in a black running suit with a red jacket unzipped.

How did everyone else do?!
I ran the LV RNR full as did my husband. This was my 2nd full(I just ran the Denver Marathon in Oct) and my husbands 1st. I ended up finishing with a PR of 4:37 and my husband finished in 4:27. Overall, I loved this event and thought it was done far better than last year. The new course was great, I was so happy with the change this year. There were no hills at all for the first 12 miles. After that, there were some hills for the full runners but nothing compared to Red Rock or other canyons around here that I run in. I struggled a bit on miles 15-19 because the cold and wind were starting to get to me. Once I made it to mile 20, I got back into a groove and my pace picked back up. I was very determined to have a finish in the 4:30's. I really pushed myself for that and was watching the Garmin the whole time. The weather ended up being very cold for this warm weathered girl. It was 33 at the start but with the wind, it felt like 20's. I was cold the entire 26 miles and never broke a sweat once.
I saw Lily early on after the race started and say hi to her. I didn't get to meet any other WISHers but when I was coming back down the strip around mile 11, I saw at least 3 WISH shirts in the opposite direction(you guys were in front of the Wynn, mile 4.5.) Also, WISH bib # 23669, you were on the news! I recorded the 3 hour broadcast at home of the race and saw that WISHer on tv. :thumbsup2 I saw myself on the news too, I was high fiving someone on the street and had no idea there was a camera right there.
Some of the memorable moments from the race were seeing a man running in a banana costume, a caveman, lots of male and female Elvis runners, running brides and grooms, a man running in a speedo, lots of santas, a man juggling while running the full, a service dog running the full, a supergirl, a Robin(from Batman), a man running with a gas mask, just to name of few. I thought RNR did a pretty good job with the event and I will keep coming back to run this race as often as I can, since it's only a 16 min drive from my house to the strip.
You can see my finish line video as well if interested by typing in bib# 8264. I'm wearing a black shirt, red skirt, white hat.

Thanks, Duane! Yep, Todd beat me by 10 min. He did not hold back, I know he had a hard time at the end. For me, towards the end is where I picked it back up somehow. He said he thought for sure I was going to catch up to him. I never did. I did get to see him on the opposite side of the street when I was around mile 16. I was so happy to see his face because that was where I was struggling a bit.
Another strong finish for the Buzzies.

that guy in the banana suit beat me. He passed my around mile 12 and I couldn't keep up. I was beat by a banana!

This was a fun race. It was my second half and I only have Disneyland to compare it to, but I liked how well organized it was. I got through packet pick-up in less than five minutes at what looked to be the busiest time for the expo. Duane, I went back to get the white long sleeve shirt after debating over it and they were all out of my size, so I feel your pain. Oh well, I did pick-up the Sugio singlet after I finished on Sunday. I was a bit dissappointed with the corral set-up. There were people checking the bib numbers, but only those in the very front of the corral (I was in #3). Disney had this down much better, I think.
The race went very well for me. I tapered perfectly and my legs were fresh for most of the race. I did start to feel cramps coming on during the last mile, but I was able to stave them off enough to finish while still running. My goal time was 1:40:00 and I finished in 1:36:09. I would not hesitate to do another Rock n Roll event, if I am able fit into my schedule. Just amazed with the crowd support, the volunteers and the overall organization of the event.
Duane - Celine Dion sang both America the Beautiful an the Star Spangled Banner. The race announcer mistakenly introduced Celine as Cher. He tried to correct himself, but the crowd drowned him out.

Great race reports!
Casey, just think, if you didn't slow up to say hello, you may have crept up closer to your DH. I must admit though, I am still glad you did say hi even if it caused you a minute of two. Selfish of me, sorry.
Duane, great report and good job at the event. Amazing that I missed you. I was right behind you all the time! I didn't even see you on the other side.
Padstack, glad you had a great event!

In case anyone is interested. We were supposed to receive our Finisher's Certificates by now so I contacted Competitor and received the following response:
Thank you for your e-mail. We will be sending off the Finisher’s Certificates by mail within the next few weeks. We are sorry for the delay but with the holidays and then traveling to our Arizona event, the mailing has been delayed. Please keep an eye out for this soon, and if you do not receive it, please let us know. Have a great day and please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns. Have a great day!

Jeanne, Jim and I were just wondering that too. In the past we've gotten them very quickly, this is the longest it has taken.

Thanks for the updates! I forgot all about them with the WDW Marathon right after.
This year I am doing the San Diego R R Half, the LA RR half, and the Vegas RR half, so I can get the extra bling. HAHAHAHA I could have done the Phoenix one for the Desert Double, but I would have had to not done WDW last week. Glad I made the right choice and got my Mickey!

Got mine, too!
Pat, I just got my medal a couple of weeks ago for doing 4th RnR (San Antonio). I'm sure the holidays slowed the process down a bit. I'm looking forward to getting the 5th medal - ROCK STAR!

Got mine and I thought the certificates were great. All the other races I had done you printed your own, so this was a real cool choice.

Ugh - I didn't receive mine. I might have to email them.
Just think, when I ran LV I thought that was brutally cold. Little did I know what Disney would bring :) LV was down right toasty!
