Pete,
After just listening to the 10/23 voicemail podcast and hearing that you thought paczki and gawumki are made up words, I have to tell you that they are not. Although the pronunciation may sound funny the words are real and the foods are delicious. :thumbsup2

Yep, being of some polish decent myself (thanks Grandma), I can vouch for those words. Every year on Fat Tuesday, I have a paczki myself. I can't say I care for gawumki or chenina (duck blood soup  ), but I can't turn down a fresh paczki or some nice kolaczki's filled with apricot!!

I grew up in a community of mainly Polish decendants. At my class reunion they served kielbasa and sauerkraut and my DH was like WTH? :lmao:Most of the kids I went to school with had names you couldn't pronounce if you saw them.
Occasionally I will hear a Polish name on the news and totally crack up because they are butchering it. As I heard someone once say, "You just have to know your Polish ABC's".
