I've been noticing on web pages that people will post various pictures and state this was another photo op courtesy of Shutters, etc.. Are you free to take your own photos in these spots or with the characters, or does Disney reserve the right to make these exclusive? I'm on a tight budget and do not intend to spend hundreds of dollars on pictures. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Yes, you are free to take your own photos during character photo opportunities.

Generally, the cruise staff will be happy to take pictures using your camera so that your entire group can be "in" the photo.

Great, I didn't want to feel obligated to buy all the pictures, but was afraid those would be the best ones.

If you like, you can take your own photos and let the professional photographers take your picture too. There is no obligation to buy the photos, and not even any pressure. You simply go to Shutters and check them out at your leisure, with nobody looking over your shoulder trying to get you to buy them.
