Things everyone applying for or planning for a Wish Trip to Orlando, Florida, needs to know:
1) If your child has been in treatment for at least 6 months for a life-threatening or life altering illness (even if no longer in treatment) they are likely to qualify to have a one-time wish granted by a wish granting organization (I am only sure that this applies in the U.S. and Canada and am not aware of the policies in other countries).
*Ask your medical provider (physician, oncologist, etc.) to refer obtain an application for you for a wish granting organization in your area. In Washington State, where we live, we have Make a Wish (http://www.wish.org/) which has chapters in various states or provinces
and Wishing Star (http://www.wishingstar.org/). I have also heard of The Wishing Well (http://www.wishingwellusa.org/HOME.asp).
Give Kids the World Village has a great search tool (http://www.gktw.org/how/wish.asp?m=wish#fs) for U.S. residents to find a wish-granting organization in your state.
:wizard:
*You should be contacted by a representative of the organization to which you applied to determine if your child is elligible for a wish (some organizations grant wishes to adults with terminal illnesses as well).
*A representative will ask your child about their one great wish in life: Something they would most want to do or have or someplace they would most like to go. They will find out for your if this wish can be granted.
*Many children will choose to visit Walt Disney World or Disneyland with their family.
:tink:
*Wish trips usually include the biological relatives who live in the same home, but there may be some exceptions.
2) Children going to Orlando to visit the theme parks there, may have the opportunity to stay, free of charge, at Give Kids the World Village, a resort exclusively for kids on Wish Trips to Orlando. But not all wish-granting organizations have agreements with Give Kids the World Village. (http://gktw.org/)
The village included 2-bedroom "Villas" (we call them duplexes in my neck of the woods), fantasy-themed buildings such as a Gingerbread House Cafeteria, a Castle of Miracles play building, and Ice Cream Palace/ parlour, and recreation such as miniature golf, swimming and water park, carousel and a train ride. Characters from theme parks often visit the Village to meet the children there. Lodging, meals and recreation are all free for kids and families staying at the village. Free tickets to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios parks and Sea World are included and some tickets are available for other area attractions. This wonderful place was created by Henry Landwirth, an amazing, compassionate visionary.
:thumbsup2
*Even a Wish Trip to Orlando can be specialized to the child's wish. A child's wish may be to meet a particular character or ride in a parade or visit a particular attraction. There is no limit to a child's imagination.
*A Wish Trip may be granted to stay at Give Kids the World Village (GKTW) or at a Disney Resort. At GKTW, the village will provide free lodging, meals on site (unlimited ice cream) and on-site recreation, as well as the theme park tickets mentioned above, travel expenses, a rental vehicle and spending money are usually provided by the wish-granting organization. A Disney Resort guest has free admission to all Walt Disney World attractions, but to no others. Meals, travel and spending money are usually provided by the wish-granting organization.
*Wish-trip kids are treated like royalty by Disney, Universal and Sea World staff and are allowed to bypass lines for attractions (with very few exceptions).
3) Ways to save money on your trip are presented here.
*If you stay at GKTW, eat breakfast there each day at 8:00. If you want an earlier start, you can have Continental breakfast a bit earlier or have a breakfast tray sent to your Villa. Eat dinner there as often as possible as well. Of course, on some theme park days, families may wish to eat at the park for lunch and dinner. There are counter service restaurants at each park that are WAY cheaper than full-service restaurants. Restaurants that feature meetings with characters are a lot more expensive yet. GKTW can provide sandwiches at lunch time if you are there.
*Buy some of your souvenirs at the Wal-Mart just down Bass Rd. from GKTW (at the first traffic light you come to). They have a very large section that has nothing but Disney shirts, stuffed animals and other collectibles. Be sure to buy a lanyard there for pins and buttons that you will receive. Great deals on souvenirs can also be found at the huge indoor Flea Market. Just turn right at the light by Wal-Mart and you will see the Flea Market on the north side of the road. Prices may be about half or less what you would pay in the theme park.
4) Don't be hesistant to take advantage of the help and services that are offered to you.
*Each theme park has a guest services office that can provide you with assistance and advice and will try to honor special requests to help grant the wishes of the wish kids. Magic Kingdom has a special lounge just for Wish Trip Families by the first aid station next to the Crystal Palace on Main Street.
*GKTW families get free strollers or wheelchairs (or often both) at theme parks.
*GKTW families get free, and preferred parking at theme parks.
*Cast members at Disney or team members at other parks, will assist you in bypassing lines for almost all rides, shows and character greets. Do not hesitate to take adavantage of this on your child's behalf. They have earned it, and so have you! It will MULTIPLY what you can experience at the parks and will greatly reduce the fatigue and stress on your child and family.
*Universal provides one free picture at each character-greeting kiosk and one general picture taken by a staff member while you are in other parts of the park. You have to pick this special picture up at the end of your day.
5) Don't overdo your trip.
*Scheduling too many character meals can be expensive and can take too much time from your park touring.
*In between rides, take in a sit-down show to rest and cool off in the shade or air conditioning. At Universal, we loved Shrek 4-D. At Magic Kingdom we loved Monster's Inc. comedy club. At Epcot we loved the rides were mostly relaxing anyway so we did not take in any shows, though there are plenty. At MGM we did Beauty and the Beast and Voyage of the Little Mermaid. At Animal Kingdom we loved the Festival of the Lion King. At Sea World we loved the Shamu "Believe" show that was playing when we were there.
*Plan shorter days between long ones. Our short days were at Sea World, Animal Kingdom and Universal Studios/ Islands of Adventure beacuse these parks close earlier. Our long days were at Magic Kingdom and Epcot/ MGM because these parks were open later. On shorter days, we spent the evening at GKTW doing the recreation there and eating ice cream.
*Allow at LEAST 2 hours at the airport to return your rental car, check your baggage and clear security before your flight is scheduled. I did not believe it, and we would have been in hot water if our flight was not delayed.
6) Keep your focus. :goodvibes
*The purpose of the trip is to fulfill the child's wish. Don't make the trip ALL about your or a sibling.
*Families pay a high price, year in and year out, when there is a child with a major illness, so make sure EVERYONE does some things that are special to them. We made a list for a few things at each park that our son wanted to do, and for Lin and I, and made the rest of the agenda for the wish trip girl.
*Again, you have may have spent a lot of time in clinics, treatments, surgeries and times when the sibling was left without Mom and/or Dad. Your family may have missed out on a lot of fun and special things that most families do. There may have been extra stresses and financial burdens on you. Medical costs and trip expenses for treatment may have kept you from having vacations and get aways like other families. Now is your chance to make up for some of that. So when you get to bypass lines and get special treatment, this is the parks way of helping make up for much of what you have missed. Remember too that they are doing this for your child because they want to make the trip as magical as possible. Just cooperate and go along for the ride. You will allow people to be blessed through blessing you.
7) Learn from others.
*Never hesistate to ask for advice from those who have gone where you are going. We all love to share and help. That is why we are on these boards. You can always find the Disney Wish Trip veterans at the ongoing Wish Trip thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1606643). Anyone on this site will be happy to answer your questions and make suggestions. You have a resource of experienced people there that can help be your trip planners and consultants. Best of all, its FREE!
8) Most important of all, enjoy your trip.
*As with any major excursion, expect unexpected setbacks and problems. They always happen, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot prevent them all. :teacher: :confused3
*Rejoice in what does go right.
*Magical blessings will come to you that will more than make up for any setback.
*Live in, experience, and focus on the moment that you are living. Don't have your mind on the next day, or the next ride, and teach your kids to focus on the moment. Try to balance picture taking and filming with actually seeing what is going on. I got really sick doing too much video one day.
*ENJOY yourself and absolutely do not feel guilty doing so. Have a blast. Make memories. Live the magic.

Narnia,
The decision of when to have a Wish Trip is difficult. We want our kids to be old enough to really enjoy and remember the trip. When our child is doing well, we want to take advantage of that time.
We did not really consider applying for a Wish until our DD was 5. By that time, she was old enough to have a clear idea of what her wish would be.
May you be blessed,
Bill

Okay... this is about the coolest thing I have seen in a long time. It is a virtual 3-D tour of Walt Disney World that allows you to tour the outside of each attraction at street level in a 3-D animation. This was created in a partnership between Disney and Google Earth. Check out this link for a sample and download instructions:
http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/special/flashPages/index?id=GoogleEarthPage
I tried it out and really enjoyed it. It is a far cry from what Google Earth used to show of WDW. I found it a bit hard to work the controls, but I will catch on. For those who have never been to WDW, it could be a nice way to study the layout of the parks.
I also found a great link for Scrap booking

Above is a sample of the type of chart I used to plan our trip. I made a chart for each park with EVERY attraction. I had each person choose their favorites by number. Then I added up the numbers for each attraction to come up with our MUST DO list. After the list was done for each park, I knew which parks to prioritize.
:scared1:
Doesn't that sound great fun for all of us obsessive types. You can make it even more intensive by listing favorites 1-10, or why not 1-20?
You can see that spell check did not like Philharmagic. By the way, I don't actually number my kids. They have names. This is just a sample.

If you are a first-time visitor to the region, like I was, you are in for a treat. It is like a different world than the one we live in. For instance, it is now 78 Degrees and 26% humidity. Where as Orlando was about 90 today with 75% humidity. We live in a mountain valley in the northwestern corner of the country. I stood on a pinnacle overlooking our town the other day. It was 4,000 feet high and just a few miles from our town. In the Orlando area, the highest mountain is Everest at Animal Kingdom.
When we left the airport terminal, the first thing I noticed was the scent in the air. It is hard to explain, but the air had a different character. It was not unpleasant, just different; a combination of tropical vegetation and minerals. The air was much more moist. I did not mind it at all, despite all the warnings I had been given.
Of course, in every direction was the deep, rich green of living things. Flowering shrubs abounded. We drove past egrets and other birds that were new to me. It was as flat as the Great Plains where I had lived for a time. I could see for miles in every direction.
It rained quite often in the afternoon. The rains, unlike ours, were neither gentle, nor cool, nor prolonged, but sudden, warm downpours that could soak you to the skin in moments, but were over as quickly as they came.
I was a bit surprised by the lizards, from tiny to average size that seemed to be on the sidewalks everywhere, although we seldom saw one in the theme parks. Perhaps they feel safe in the sanctuary of the Village. The great thing about lizards is that they eat bugs. Give me lizards over bugs any day.
The evenings were gloriously warm, as opposed to hot. The humidity intensified the sweet savor of the many blossoms in the village. Darkness comes much earlier, and more suddenly there in September, than at our latitude. As darkness fell, the colored lights of the Village created a magical atmosphere of beauty. I loved to just sit on a bench by the Gingerbread House and take it all in. That is, until the the Ice Cream Palace called to me in with its siren song. Fortunately, calories and sugar intake do not count on Wish Trips (unless you are diabetic).
As we drove to the parks, I had two impressions. There is water everywhere. Ponds and water-friendly trees appear along the highways. I checked every pond for alligators, but did not see one until at the airport on the way home. I was also impressed by the traffic. It is NOTHING like Seattle, Portland, Oregon or L.A. The drivers did not seem to be out for blood or passing points. I have to admit that the toll roads seemed a bit odd to a westerner. Keep change handy.
It is important to stay cool, to be sure. I accomplished this with neck coolers (Disney-themed of course), a brimmed hat and wise use of the shade. We drank water often. We were provided with complimentary water cups at vendors wherever we asked.
I also looked for good excuses to get wet. Many of the parks have water play areas. I always had a kid with me to use as an excuse to play there. We used the fountains in Future World at Epcot, in the Cartoon area of I.O.A. in Shamu's Happy Harbor at Sea World, and, best of all at Claytonburg Park by the Pool in the Village. The best cooling is found at the misting station near Men in Black at Universal Studios. Try it and you will love it.
The water ride is a great invention as well. Islands of Adventure has three plus a water play area. The raft rides offer the best opportunity for a soaking, but log flume rides can do the trick at times. Try Bilge Rat Barges, Jurassic Park and Rip Saw Falls at Islands of Adventure, Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom, Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom and Journey to Atlantis at Sea World.
By the time our trip was ending, I was well acclimatized and ready to live in Orlando forever.

I have found another great thread for y'all. It is for folks who want to team up to send cards from WDW to kids planning on visiting WDW, from that child's favorite character. This is a great idea. The plan is for you to let someone know your dates so they can send cards to your kids. Then, when you are there, for you to do the same for another person's kids.

I have found a CM at Disney Hollywood Studios who wants to help spread pixie dust by sending postcards from WDW characters to Wish Trip Kids before their trips. Her name is Tara Laine (both together are her first name). She is a photopass photographer. You can PM her as smatterchu.

If you are going on a Wish Trip to Give Kids the World Village, I would advise you to wait until after your trip to buy things from the online gift shop. Wait to see what you will be given for free. After you have returned from the trip, you can order online. Proceeds benefit the Village. Mention to the staff at the House of Hearts that you would like to use the on line gift shop upon your return home, they might have some helpful information for you.

I FINALLY figured out the quick and easy way to paste a link to another thread or website in a post.
FIRST: Copy the url from the address bar at the top of your window when on the site or thread you want to link to.
SECOND: Type your text for the post, including the title of what you are linking to (can you believe an English major is ending sentences with "to?").
THIRD: Highlight the title in your text.
FOURTH: Click the globe icon at the top of the text window.
FIFTH: Paste your url into the link window that pops up. Then choose "OK."
Let's see, have I somehow managed to make this more complicated than it needs to be? I hope not. I have this habit of arranging everything in the world into "___ easy steps."

Working on our Wish Trip Planning:
Here are some questions for you fellow Wish trippers:
Earlier in the week we received a bit of bad news from our Wish Granter, Erin. She told us that it was determined that once we check out of GKTW any tickets that we did not use will have to be given back. We only have four full days at Give Kids the World before we check out, but they give you tickets to see seven parks. We knew there was no way we could accomplish this but didn’t want to pass up the once in a lifetime opportunity to see all these parks (not to mention our kids are ride junkies). Hence, the extension. Any other wish trippers out there have any experience with keeping their tickets during their “extended” portion of the stay?
Will we at least be able to keep a ticket to see a park the day we are checking out?
The weekly Christmas celebration at GKTW takes place the day that we check out. Does anyone know if we will be able to participate in the festivities this evening even though we will be "checked out" of our villa?
Should we book a Fantasmic dinner package or can Wish kids use the special side entrance for Fantasmic to the reserved seating area?
Should we purchase the Universal Express passes ($19.99 each) Since Brian and I would like to do a couple of the adult rides like Mummy and Hulk.
Does Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure have a Wish Loung (like the ones at Magic Kingdom and Epcot) that we can use to recharge and get the kids naps. Does Disney Studios have one?
Did any of you fellow wish Trippers need to use Fast Pass? Especially if you did an adult ride without your “wish kid?”
We are planning to purchase tickets to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party as Make A Wish has told us this is not something they do.
Erin told us that the Florida chapter will make arrangements for Sebastian to meet with one special character. We told them it was no question: Buzz Lightyear! We are wondering what to expect. Anyone have any experiences with Make A Wish coordinating a specific character meet and greet for them?
We also told Make A Wish that we would like to eat at Chef Mickey’s the first day that we arrive since we won’t be visiting a park on this day. Anyone have experience with Make A Wish coordinating a character meal for them?

Amber- you mentioned only having four days at GKTW- did I miss something- are you driving down or staying somewhere else for the rest of your trip? I thought a GKTW Wish trip was an entire week so I'm sorry either way that you don't have the full time. I don't have any experience with GKTW as my son's wish trip wasn't to Disney ( we live only 30 min away and he's had lots of fun already at WDW.) I do know each chapter is different and so the policies about extending the tickets or allowing you to keep them may vary or this may be a GKTW policy. The wish kids are only able to wear their "buttons" during the trip itself and use the special GAC during their trip so perhaps due to the constraints of the ticket donors they also can't be used after the trip. Hopefully someone else who DOES know more than me will chime in but I wanted to wish you a magical trip. Loved the photo of Sebastian...oh...I mean BUZZ!---Kathy

For accurate information on GAC's please review SueM in MN's post (http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=595713)on Wish Trip info on the disABILITIES board. It is near the top of the list of threads.
Although we were not asked to return our Make a Wish or GKTW buttons so that we kept them for souvenirs (and to wear on the flight home, which resulted in some very special treatment from Alaska Airlines), the GAC is what actually allows for the accomodations in the parks. Obtain another GAC when you begin the extended (on your own dime) portion of the trip. The GAC is obtained from Guest Services outside or inside the park entrances at WDW. It cannot be obtained in advance.
I still think that tickets can be used on the day you check out of GKTW, but you should clarify that by contacting GKTW. Leave a message on their machine with your specific question. Mention that it is important for your trip planning to know.

I could just cry....
I just got off the phone with Disney's Advance Dining Reservations. I was trying to make reservations for Sebastian's Wish Trip December 6th-14th 2008(five months from now!) and NOT ONE of the meals I was trying to make a reservation for had any availability. I tried explaining that this was a Make A Wish trip. Still Nothing. I know I could wait and try for to get worked in to a restaurant once we arrive but that's just not how I operate.
I tried for any of the following:
Dinner Chef Mickey's Saturday, December 6th
Donald's Safari Breakfast, Sunday December 7th
Dinner Liberty Tree, Sunday December 7th
Breakfast Hollywood and Vine Monday December 8th
Fantasmic Package Mama Melrose Dinner Monday December 8th
Late Lunch Cinderella’s Royal Table Tuesday, December 9th
Lunch the Garden Grill, Wednesday, December 10th
Late Lunch Cinderella’s Royal Table Wednesday, December 10th
I just can't believe that NONE would have anything during what is touted by countless books and websites as the least crowded time of year to visit.
When we went to Disney last October (a much more crowded time of year) I made all of our ADRs only a couple months in advance and we were able to book, Liberty Tree, Prime Time Cafe, Akershus Princess Meal, Sci Fi Drive In, Hollywood and Vine Fantasmic and Mickey's Back Yard BBQ.

I would suggest calling weekly. One important thing is 45 days out is when final payments are due on packages and a lot of people will cancel by then.
Another is that is Pop Warner week, with a lot of youth football and cheerleaders. Many people may be making reservations in anticipation of their child's team or squad attending, but will be cancelled if they don't qualify.

Amber. I have sent several wish kids to Disney and there are some things that Make A Wish just can not help with. ADR's are one of them. Like several poster have already stated you should keep calling. People do cancel. You may also want to check out the December ADR trade thread on the DIS boards. Look for the December link.

Your best bet for specific Disney questions is the people at Give Kids THe World. They handle the Park part of your wish and are best equipped to answer your questions. Some of the "perks" (front of the line) that go along with the wish experience are not garunteed and your wish granters may not be able to answer questions about them. Keep in mind that while some things are not included (Mickeys Very Merry Christmas) you do get a pretty good per diem that can help cover this. I do not think there is a "wish lounge" at Universal. If you have any more questions let me know and I can try and answer them. Also, keep in mind that different MAW chapters can have different policies.

I would do the other things Bill suggested first, but...
we have already gotten into 'full' places by stopping at the check in desk at the restaurant. If someone has a ADR and just doesn't show, at some point their time may become open. If you happen to check at the desk when the time opens up, you may get in.
Again, I'd try the other things first, but if there is a place you really want to eat and none of those work, it's worth a try.

Thanks so much for this info. I'm just starting to replan our DD's MAW trip. The trip was postponed since she got sick 2 days before we were supposed to leave. Now we can be better prepared.
I was dreading the midday meltdown, but knowing there's a wish lounge gives me another option! Thanks. :thumbsup2 :cheer2: :wave2:

I've been looking around and am getting a little confused between the MAW/GKTW buttons vs the GAC. Some Wish trip reports suggest that we almost *need* the GAC to get some kind of preferencial treatment (i.e. get to the head of the line). At this point, DD probably doesn't *need* the GAC. She is limited in her stamina due to 3 years of chemotherapy.
What kind of treatment should we expect the MAW/GKTW buttons to "get" for us? I'm sorry if this sounds crass, but I'm not sure what kind of accomodations we should be asking for/expecting. I have heard reports of CMs not knowing about these buttons and since we'll only ever have them this one week (fingers crossed) I would like to know what to expect (and what to request). :scratchin

Most cast member are people who love children and will go out of their way to make Wish children feel special. I read about a CM who only wears her pin trading lanyard around wish kids. That button is magical but has no real power like getting you to the head of a line or like the GAC but is magical because people at WDW love kids and especially care for Wish Kids.

page two has pictures of the village. Very detailed and long thread but read it as it will pretty much explain what is possible. No guarantee as things happen to one person may not happen to another.pixiedust:

That is the boy with his Wish button
We walked out to the parade at 2:57 - starts at 3 and people start lining up an hour early to get a good seat. A cute little blond girl (named Aimee - I love that name) called us over and moved us up to the front row for good viewing. When Peter Pan came by, he pointed down at Michael (in his Peter Pan hat and overalls) and said, "Happy Birthday Michael!" You can imagine his reaction. (No imagining...here it is!)
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w296/wendygrace1/Monday%20MK/Meet%20And%20Greet/113_113.jpg
See how they are playing with the boy but also smothering with love the daughter.
GAC is for all guests. It lets the CM know that a person has a hidden disability. When in my ECV I do not need the GAC. If I waddle onto a ride then I need the GAC that says no stairs. My friend Calvin is hard of hearing so he gets the stamp for hearing and one for no stairs as he can walk good but not them stairs. Instead of a disabled person explaining 50 times what they need they just show the card and the CM will immediately know what to do.:grouphug:

The MAW button will get you noticed, but the GAC will specify what kind of accommodations you need. As you probably saw in the FAQs thread, accommodations are given based on needs. So, when you get your GAC explain your needs and they will give a GAC message/messages to try to meet those needs. Exactly what happens depends and may vary at each attraction.
Even with the same GAC at the same attraction on the same day, you may be treated differently because or things you can not see -like how busy it is, how many other people are waiting with special needs, etc.
Sad to say, there has been some abuse of MAW buttons in the past. Some people were reusing their buttons on every future trip and expecting the same treatment instead of understanding it was a once in a lifetime special button. That may be a simple misunderstanding and doesn't really make that much impact since for most people their MAW trip is a once in a lifetime trip. That's not what I'm talking about as abuse.
The real abuse was that some people were actually selling fake MAW buttons a few years back in areas near to WDW, but not actually on the property. People bought them for the special treatment the button brought. :sad1:
So, the important thing for getting the accommodations you need are your child's GAC and the MAW paperwork.
Sad to say,
Tamraj

I have one question my DD is the one getting the wish. If I read the posts right she will git this GAC thingy but we have a little one that is disabled as well that will be with us. Would we be able to get two GAC's that way if DD is with me on a big kids rides daddy could take son on little kids ride without having to wait in long lines????
Thanks Tammy :)

Forgot to mention......you only recieve ONE guest assistance card that covers the family. You really will need to stay together to use the card. What we did when my hubby wanted to do the bigger rides ....was we would find a show or a somewhere to wait (sometimes at a counter service resturant or snack place) then he would take the card while we waited. We didn't split up often but it did work out fine in most cases. My husband would show the card and explain that the wish child was waiting for him and they would wave him right through.

The MAW GAC card is specifically for the WISH child, so you may run into CMs who do tell you it can't be used unless the WISH child is going on that attraction (that is the actual rule, so you may get CMs who will bend it, but that would be up to the CM).
Also, I just noticed the OP was talking about on child going on little kid rides while another was on big kids rides. So the WISH child would already be using the MAW GAC for access.

If your other child also has disabilities and you may want to split up, you can go to Guest Relations to request a GAC for your disabled 'non-WISH' child. I would probably not go into Guest Relations as a whole family and not have MAW stuff visible because they would be likely to say you already have a MAW GAC and not give one. But, since you have a 'non-WISH' child who would not be going on the same rides all the time, it does make sense that you may need some other accommodations.
Since the GAC is not meant to shorten the wait in lines, you may find that the wait is not shorter, but the conditions would meet your child's needs.

I have this terrible habit when I am working. When people flash a GAC at me I will stop them and ask to look at it closely. I will see what stamps are on it as well as the expiration date. I have been known to ask who is the person named on the card. And if I saw the special stamp from GKTW and no child present I would possibly, depending on response, confiscate the card and turn it over to a manager.

There is no charge for the GAC, and it will be valid in all four Disney parks for the duration of your trip.
If you have not yet done so, click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #6 discusses the GAC at some length.

Actually lack of stamina is the reason why many kids have a GAC. Standing in long lines can be very draining. That was our main concern, and it helped a lot.

You will get what you need for your MAW child at the GKTW orientation.
They will take care of making sure your MAW child has what he/she needs.
Think of the button as kind of a 'marker' that lets the CMs know your child is on a MAW trip. The GAC (that you will be given at the orientation) will tell more specifically what your child needs. You will be given what you need, so don't worry.

Seriously. Don't worry. In the experience of the Wish Trippers with whom I have discussed this, everything is handled for you in regards to the GAC by GKTW, so you just have to go with the flow on that. The were only a few exceptions I had to having it all very clear in my mind after orientation. I had trouble knowing to follow the Disabled traffic lane paint at Disney, which a parking attendant tried to tell me (I was a tad confused). At each park CMs will direct you to where you are to park after they see the GKTW button.
At Universal, I was not ready to present the special parking pass to the attendant as I drove in. It looked very much like one of the tickets. I am sure she thought I was an idiot as I dug for it.
Some (very few) TMs at Universal were a bit confused on how to deal with the pass. When in doubt ask what to do at attraction entrances.
There are some things we, as parents, should be planning to handle. Here is a partial list:
Packing all weather gear appropriate for the climate. For us, in September, this was crocs, shorts, ponchos, sunscreen, a misting bottle (which you can buy easier down there than at home most times) and a hat for me.
Reservations for character meals. This is hard, because many of these are booked up before you get your trip dates. Still, calling back frequently to check on cancellations can work wonders. You can see on our TR that Disney Pixie Dust got us in without reservations (thanks Jeff!).
Believing GKTW when they say to pack light. You can wash clothes at the villa while you are soaking in the hot tub. We had to buy a huge bag because our luggage was full of goodies we received or bought. That was before the days of paying per bag on the plane.
Have cash handy to buy food on the plane.
Scheduling where you want to go each day and remaining flexible when plans need to be changed.
I will add more when I can think of things.

That is exactly what I was told in disneyland with my daughter's case , all family members of the wish child are covered with the GAC card wether the wish child is riding or not. A wish trip is mainly for the wish child but it is also focused on the family.

We took the GAC to the line for the big kids and were able to get the CMs at Disney to let them in while we held on to the GAC for the little one to go elsewhere. At US and IOA we had some trouble with TMs going along with this. At SW, while some were riding Kraken, Lysi and I fed the seals.
I hope this helps.

Baby swapping. AT DLR Autopia the party shows up and tells the CM they are doing a child swap. The party gets in line using GAC, single rider, fastpass or stand by lines. The babysitter and the kids who cannot ride go to the exit to wait for the party to get off the ride. The babysitter can spend that time doing other things like rides, shows, and snacking, whatever. The party gets off the ride then the babysitter takes one person and goes through the Autopia exit to almost immediately board.
It works the same way basically for WDW and DLR rides. This is only for rides where there are height requirements in place and one member is to short.

There is a much more active Wish Trippers thread near the top of the disABILITIES Board. Post one of that thread has a lot of general information, like how to start a pre trip report.
If you can't find that thread, there is a link to it in post 3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread, which is near theropod this board or you can follow the link in my signature.
Since this thread is not really active, I am going to lose it.
