When we went in Aug my handbag was classed as my carry-on. It was only one piece each but i could have put it in Dh camera bag and then taken it out after we had gone through security.
Coming back we were allowed anything. DD brought a large Minnie for her freind and also had her own rucksack.

Yes, it is one bag per person including hand bags, camera bags etc. Last time we went abroad with having a spare fold up bag that we put the smaller bags (hand, camera and normal) in to go through security and then took them out again. Dd was allowed her doll in addition to a bag, and I saw other people with pillows/cushions separately. Also, remember to have any liquids/gels etc in a suitable clear bag.

Yes, it is definitely one bag!
Its a bit awkward, when you've checked your luggage into DTD, if like us, you usually take a decent size flight bag on board.
Its sometimes a good idea to use a small handbag on the final day and pop it into the flight bag when you check in at the airport.
Hope that helps!
