Interesting news. When I was fishing for info about the GCV at the DLR last month the DVC salesperson told me they planned on expanding into Hawaii and Cabo.

I won't be adding on there but it will be nice to try it out.

we have 400 pts at this point and want to add on 200 more will do that for Hawaii and 600 pts should fit well at the 7 mo. mark for the larger hotels:thumbsup2

Even though we are thinking of selling most of our points we may consider adding on in Hawaii - that would be great! Here's another article:

Here is another report. According to this report by the Sun-Sentinel, half or more of the 800 units will be DVC units...

I will DEFINITELY be staying there, but at this stage of life, I doubt I would specifically buy there. We don't usually plan Hawaii vacations less than 10 years apart because of the long flight to get there. I'll be 65 when it opens, so doubt we will buy, but it should make finding great accommodations a LOT easier! Now, I wonder if the points will be too exhorbitant to use it!!!

After staying at the Marriott Ko'Olina, I have no idea how Disney will compete with that.. as nice as the DVC units are, they are nowhere near as nice or as nicely kept as the Ko'Olina units by Marriott.... They'll have to figure this out, and I hope they do it before they build and start taking guests....

With only 21 acres for 800 rooms, I wonder how tall the buildings will be, and what size the pool will be...

I'll be staying at the Marriott Ko Olina resort for two weeks in June. First at the JW Marriott on Lagoon 1, then at the Marriott Ko Olina Vacation Club resort on Lagoon 3. My understanding is that the DVC will be between the two on half of lagoon 1 and lagoon 2. Maybe construction will be started when I get there.

I have to be honest, this is probably the least exciting DVC anouncement I've ever heard. I found Hawaii a bit boring when I went. I work too hard to spend my vacation sitting around on the beach. However I'm happy for all of you that have been itching for the Hawaii DVC.

I understand for that for easterners this will be quite a haul. It is less than 5 hours from most of the west coast. This, plus the fact the GCH will soon be for sale, and interest will really increase at the DLR sales center.

I do not see the points being much different than any other resort. (DVC has shown no pattern that would indicate this) They may be expensive to buy initially, but as an existing member, this will not be an issue for you.
Regarding your long flight, why not break it up with a 2 or 3 day trip to the DLR?

I drilled him :rotfl: for more information but he said he was getting dressed for work. No excuse!!!!!! :rotfl2:

As much as this has limited appeal to me, I can see where they need to add units on the "left coast", especially since the one they just announced will be so small.

But, being a WDW park junkie, I have no reason to travel that far for two days at Disneyland and California Adventure or, as lovely as Hawaii is with its Polynesian culture, for what would still just be a beach vacation to me. There would have to be a lot more themepark to draw me away from Florida.

I don't doubt that the new west coast owners will be adding to the competition for the WDW resorts.... oh remember the days when you could plan a quick trip three months out?

I think that DVC expansion should follow Disney expansion. But they must have enough people trading out to Hawaii to justifly this, right?

I could see us doing this at least once. Maybe for our 10 year anniversary which would be in 2012. It will be nice to use points instead of doing an exchange.

Especially when some airlines allow a FREE stopover. So, you could go from NYC to LA, hang out a few days and then go onto Hawaii. Another advantage is that jet lag is easier one way.

In addition, Long Beach is the West Coast hub for JetBlue, they offer non stops from several East Coast cities for 99.00 each way to Long Beach, then after your DLR stay, you can hop on one of the many flights from LAX to Hawaii.

This would most likely be cheaper than a non stop to Hawaii from the east since LAX to Hawaii flights are pretty compeditive. It would also be alot less exhausting.

This is too exciting! We're at BWV now and my guide called yesterday and asked me if we had used our points through II to go to Hawaii. Told her no because we own at Ko'Olina with Marriott. She then proceded to engage me in a conversation about the area, and other Hawaiian properties as she and her husband were interested in going there.

The property is stunning. Marriott had originally intended to build a Ritz there, so maybe they sold it to Disney. Now we'll be able to extend our week at Ko'Olina buy using DVC points in addition to our MVC.

I can say one thing, I spoke to my guide yesterday, she said they are preparing for brisk sales at DLR for west coast visitors. Both Hawaii and GCH will really boost sales.

Okay, people. Honestly, for numbers sake, how many buyers on the DIS Boards? How many of you are willing to say that other than a once or twice visit, you would be willing to buy into a home resort in Hawaii with the owner's 11 month window on the west coast?
As much as we are sending a "yippee"... is that what you were hoping to add to your Disney Vacation Club opportinities?
I am really just asking, because, I never saw the some place other than a Disney Vacation as an option, unless I planned far enough ahead to trade out...

I would definately buy here and I am an east coaster. I have no problem making it my home resort as I know I will always be able to get something back at WDW pretty much whenever I wanted either with my AKV or SSR points or with my HI points at 7 months.

Might buy these just to use in HI and alternate on off with HHI and/or VB.

thats the great thing about DVC, in my opinion, if you dont want to visit anywhere outside of WDW with your points, then you certainly dont have to as there are enough options there, but now we will have 4 very good alternatives outside of WDW that people can take advantage of.

Count us in...just had a long talk with the extended family yesterday at a family get together and even with a family 1bdrm condo in Honolulu, this is a definite add on.

count us in for GCV also, even if we live 30 minutes away from DLR.

Flyerfan

No add on here. It's nice to know it will be there when we want to visit. Quite honestly, for the amount of time it would take for us to fly one way (from driving to airport thru arriving at destination resort), we could DRIVE to Florida (our preferred choice of travel). However, it's great news for west-coasters and those who frequently vacation in Hawaii.

I used to vacation every year in Hawaii when I lived in California. When I moved to North Carolina in 2003, I took my first trip from the East Coast. It just takes too long to get there from here! I haven't been to Hawaii since.

I won't do any add-on in Hawaii, but would probably take a trip there in the future.

epicureangirl
10-08-2007, 08:31 PM
I would do a small add on here, enough for a week every other year in a two bedroom. My in-laws fell in love with Ko Olina, so I know a larger family trip there would be well recieved. Or, we could alternate years with them in a 1 bedroom perhaps? Anyhow, I don't see me breaking the bank for a large contract here, but I would really want the booking advantage. I wouldn't be surprised if the contracts were attractive to the (heaven forbid) commercial renters, as Hawaii is a popular destination year-round. I have to wait to see what the point schedule and price looks like. If it is in line with the other resorts, then I don't see anything holding me back. Since I don't imagine a lot of East Coasters will want to buy Hawaii, I might be able to reservation swap with another DVC'r? Who knows. So excited about this announcement though!

Remember the posts about people snooping around the SSR model rooms, and finding the CRV, and DLR decor and theming? I recall someone said one was brightly colored. I am wondering if that was actually a HI decor, and theme.
