To get to the fort we always go through the gate and take that immediate right. Now looking at an aerial shot, I see there's a road before the gate. Is that an actual road? I've never noticed it before. Here are the pics. The first is our route, the second is the close-up of the questionable road.

Here's the close-up:

I can't say for sure, but unless it's marked at the road that it's an exit for the Fort, I would imagine it's a service road for staff/grounds-people.

That road is blocked off. Has been for years.

I thought that was the old airstrip when Walt and Roy used to fly in to check the property? I guess it doesn't make sense since it is attached to the main road. Now I'm guessing it could have been a bypass road for the buses years ago?

No, the airstrip is just north of that. That is just an old service road that as Xterra mentioned has been blocked off for years.

Since it's going to be a slow day, here is an aerial shot that will help.
The runway is circled in blue, the road in question is circled in red. So you were very very close ;)

Can anyone else see Mr. Ray from Nemo in the picture? The circles of trees make out his eyes and he even has his tail:rotfl2:
Sorry, this is how I get when the alcohol wears off from the weekend.

You know, I was thinking the same thing, although I didn't see Mr. Ray, but I was like, those almost look like two Mickey's missing an ear. I'm sure Disney would love it if those two tree stands would take up root and merge together ;)

I thought I saw a hidden Mickey or two in there???? :confused3

I see Mr. Ray too! I do that a lot, make things out of clouds, stars, woodwork, birthmarks, uneven tans...yes, I have a weird imagination  DH, on the otherhand, can't even see the Man in the Moon, he sees the Energizer Bunny :rolleyes1

I've always wondered what that was (you can see that from the buses as you're headed toward FW, can't you? Out the left? Or on the right as you're going from FW to MK?). Maybe you should take us on an aerial tour of the area and fill us in on what everything is. While I'm making requests, do you have any pictures of FW through the years when you were a kid? I'd love to see pictures of the different areas back then.

Those are proposed loops for the future FW expansion. It must be true, because a CM told me and it was confirmed by a FW bus driver.

Yea, you see it when you're on your way to FW, on your left hand side. It's normally filled up with trucks or buses, I think they now use it as a staging area.
I can't remember the last time I saw it, but I do know that a while back I saw a plane parked on the runway. I'm not sure if it's still an active runway, but I seriously doubt it, at least now.
One thing I want to do (hopefully this year) is go through my parents picture albums and get all the pictures from the Fort when we were young and scan them onto them computer. I definitely will share once I do!

I can also confirm this because someone at reservations told me as well, so it must be true ;)
Oh, and by the way, look for the upcoming peacock petting farm, I hear it's going to be a blast.

Not interested in beer, but if that thing can serve up some wine, I'd be interested.
What's with the Otters? (should I ask?)

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
throw this gal otter here, she's otter control.

Could you tell me what your using to look at the aerial views as I would love to take a peek. My GPS was always trying to take me down the road for service vehicles just before you get to the horse trail that crosses the road near the entrance.

I think I remember hearing about that. IIRC a plane made an emergency landing there. Disney wouldn't let them take off again from there and the plane had to be hauled out on a truck.

I use Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/) for my aerial view needs. Google Earth, a program you install on your computer, is also real cool.

IIRC, the road in question has been blocked off since at least the mid-80"s.

If you go to this link:

That will take you to the airplane phot shots that Microsoft did. They are much more detailed than the Google aerial shots, and you can get a better feel of how things lay out at Fort Wilderness (and anywhere in Disney) if you use that link. I like Google for the sattelite views, but if you want any kind of detail, the Microsoft maps are much more detailed (and newer).

Thanks for the link. That is a great way to look at FW/WDW. Any coincidence that it is centered on the old River Country? Just think how many peacocks & otters they could fit in there!

lol, that is just where I have the link set in my favorites, I find it easier to use as a starting point to view anywhere in Disney. I normally mainly look at the Fort and surrounding areas, although sometimes it's cool to see Epcot and the other parks.

Thanks for that link! What a cool site. I've never been there before. They have such great views! I should be cleaning the house, but I think I'll be searching around Disney World and pretending I'm there. lol Thanks! :thumbsup2
