Our final year of college "hoorah" before becoming real people.
WDW is a great place to escape the stresses of senior thesis to come.

The cast for this tale:

Me, your guide (23) - you will often see this person represented by the letter "I" throughout this report. An illustration major (children's books) in the last year of college trying to keep sane. Hugs plushies and wears Minnie ears at work, because it is the rare moment she can have fun with her week. Pretty much, she is the planner and mastermind of the trip.

DBF (23) - Thankfully loves Disney as much as I do. He is a literature major in his last year as well, and he tends to have a little more time to stop and enjoy the world around him. cough*NintendoWii*cough. He is the editor of the trip and tells me how crazy I am.

Palahniuk (21) - this is our female friend, a Disney nickname just would not be appropriate. She is also an illustration major in her last year. We have been annoying our classmates with Disney travel chatter for the first 3weeks of school. She is game for whatever plans I present and has not seen the World since before AK existed (not sure how long before that).

Pegasus ( 22)- Our male friend joining us on the journey. He actually graduated last year with his proper 4years of school and is working as a graphic designer for a company in town. Much more Disney inclined than Palahniuk, but has never been to the parks!!! Oh so much fun is going to be had with this. He also worries us because he is chronically late and loses his belongings constantly. We have special plans to keep him on track.

What is in the works?

Last year the two of us took a trip together, and now we cannot wait to go back!
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/genie.jpg
the two of us hanging out with Genie.

Around May we started to talk more and more about our next trip. Because of school, and work, the best time for us to go is the first week of January. Then we can work the holiday season before the trip and have a week before school goes back after the trip. The original plan (and most of you know how that works) was to go the same dates as last trip which would give us 5days in the park (one day be the arrival day). But then I started crunching numbers and made up an alternative plan if we could recruit some impressionable friends.

Recruiting people to the land of magic seems like maybe it could be simple. We started with our old high school friends who all said they had no money. Then, we focused on DBF's parents, but they are planning a New Orleans trip for spring (can we come along?). And as a last hope, I was talking about our plans with Palahniuk and Pegasus and they immediately committed to coming along. I had joked about a trip last year with Palahniuk but she made a face that looked like a trip to California or France would be more fun. Did we really just convince some friends to come along?! This moved the trip to our Plan B for December 31st to January 7th, adding an extra day in the parks, and relaxing arrival and departure days.

When it comes to hotel rooms we do not really care, as long is it is decent. Our trips are spent out and about from morning until night, so ASMo is our cheap choice. We stayed in Mighty Ducks last year and had no issues at all. With four of us, the price is even more appealing. Palahniuk and Pegasus have to share a bed, but they are currently holding a humorous take on this situation.

Reservation time!
Because I was gone from June 20th-August 16th this past summer for a massive road trip with my grandparents (to Alaska and back) we wanted to make reservations before I left. We threw in December 31st so we could wake up early on the 1st and see if maybe, just maybe, the parks would be deserted that morning. But that also means we have to make two reservations to get the value season rates for the rest of our stay. Blech.

That is something I have to clear up as this planning comes along because we would really like to hit the park at opening on Jan. 1st. If we can arrange to meet someone around 7:30 in the morning to do the process, or have our luggage held if we need to check into a different room, that can make or break our first day.

For airlines we wanted to do Midwest again, the flight was wonderful and our times did not change a second! But, AirTran has been making hostile bids on Midwest so we did not want major changes to happen to our flight (like no more airline). And that is why we are flying with the bullies at AirTran. Our flight was originally booked for an 8am departure, getting to Orlando around 11am, and has already changed to 8:50am with a 12:26pm landing. How can an airline offer no flights landing in Orlando in the AM? Our return flight was originally 7:30pm and is now 7:03pm. I am not looking forward to more changes, if the time continues to creep later on our first day and earlier on our last.

And the glorious park tickets. I get 3free tickets a year, but this year we went all out and bought a 6day PH from Undercover Tourist. With the price hike we are sitting pretty with our savings. I am still going to pick up my free tickets post-dated for Dec 2008 in the hopes that we make it back next fall. Palahniuk was on top of things and ordered her ticket and tucked it away in a drawer. Pegasus has his, but who knows where and hopefully it is still around when we go on our trip. We have thought of suggesting one of us holds on to it, ha.

And dining?
Well, last year we had an ADR For CRT. Whenever I am on the go and eat a large meal, I get sick. On my birthday last year we had a massive breakfast at CRT only for me to spend the next 4hours feeling sick (nauseous) and needing to sit down. It was not the food quality (I know some of you detest CRT), but my cursed sensitive stomach that does this whenever I eat a lot and walk around. I got some generic Tums things from First Aid (thank your Dis for having threads about that place). Most of the trip we prefer to eat a later breakfast of a CS sized portion and a snack for dinner. That's it. We discussed this with Palahniuk and Pegasus and offered to help them set up ADRs, but they agreed that they prefer to eat small meals whenever it springs upon them. So, no, we are not doing a dining plan or a package or any of the savvy Dis'er advice regarding that area. Too much food! And I am bringing Tums with me, ha. DBF and I eat a lot of natural and organic foods so the fatty richness of WDW is not the best for our bodies to handle all of a sudden.

Except for Pineapple Floats. MMMMMMmmmmm. We have advanced dining plans to consume, at the least, one pineapple float each time we are in the MK. And that will be almost nightly.

Coming up when I have a chance for more typing: daily plans for our WDW trip!

So, we tend to be more relaxed with how we plan. The basics of starting early and hitting the major attractions is the core planning idea. Each day we will have goal of certain attractions to hit (usually a low number) and everything else will be considered bonus experience. The second time I ever visited WDW was with DBF's family and we tried to fit everything into that one day and I felt so rushed and let down at the end of the night. We never want to feel like that on our vacation.

Day 1 - arrival day
-land in Orlando around 12:26pm
-catch magical express to ASMo
-do early check-in and leave laptops with luggage service (eek)
-Beaches and Cream for a Kitchen Sink lunch
-head over to DTD to scope out souvies
-back to hotel room for possible wine/champagne and low-key New Year's Eve

The questions we still have is the process of getting to the Beach Club. If riding a bus to MGM and then walking works out the best (we do not mind walking)? I know using EPCOT means you have to go through the park to the International Gateway (right?), which we cannot do. And how insane is the entire WDW resort on New Year's Eve?

Day 2 - Magic Kingdom
-up early this morning with hopes to make it for entire opening ceremony
-need to check out and back in for our value season rates
-hit Splash Mountain! (Edit: down for refurb, NOOOOOO)
-BTMRR
-get Pegasus first time button
-enjoy rides and ponder FPs
-lunch at Columbia Harbour House (first place we ate last year)
-curb seats for Spectro with pineapple floats
-stay until midnight closing

We still need to work out the process of checking out and back in. Someone mentioned it can be organized for a CM to meet you at your room in the morning if you are not switching rooms.

Day 3 - EPCOT
-up early again to head to the next park
-hit up Soarin first thing
-Test Track if it is running (Grab FPs?)
-SE if it is open and running
-wander over to WS before opening and grab iced-coffee on the way
-sit in peace and look at details and get photos in the countries
-late lunch at CS restaurant
-margaritas
-enjoy EPCOT and the smaller rides if they have short waits
-get seats for Illuminations

Day 4- Animal Kingdom/Magic Kingdom
-early rise
-get to Everest first thing (Palahniuk chose this)
-grab FPs for Everest
-Safari, and hope it is not a long wait at this point
-Dinosaur
-Everest the second time
-maybe eat lunch
-leave Palahniuk and Pegasus to explore AK and head to MK
-get to MK, relax in the park, people watch, window shop
-meet up with Palahniuk and Pegasus to check out Tom Sawyer (if crowds are larger)
-scope out low-wait rides and character greets
-pineapple floats
-ride during Spectro and Wishes

Day 5- Magic Kingdom
MY BIRTHDAY!
-ughhh early mornings!
-MK for opening and hit Space Mountain (if it is not closed for rehab)
-Buzz a few times?
-get birthday button
-relax and wander while looking for rides to hit (if there are any left that we have not done this vacation, wait for them)
-head to Poly for a Lapu Lapu in the afternoon as a birthday treat
-find Peter and Wendy back in the MK
-enjoy attractions and atmosphere
-pineapple floats

Day 6-MGM (still calling it that)/EPCOT
-earrrrly for EMH at MGM
-TOT first, and grab FPs
-RNR
-hit other attractions while crowds are lower
-see Beauty and the Beast
-head to EPCOT (sorry, no Fantasmic chaos for us on this trip)
-enjoy WS and drinks again
-relax, and try not to bail to MK again, but that is possible

Day 7- Animal Kingdom/Magic Kingdom
-up so we can ride Everest a few more times!
-and the Safari again
-head over to Magic Kingdom to enjoy last day in parks
-pineapple floats
-maybe Spectro again
-evening EMH
-cry a little and say goodnight

Day 8- DTD and Departure
-sleep in an extra hour!
-check out and leave luggage with luggage service
-catch bus to DTD
-purchase all to the souvies we scoped out and knew were at WOD
-Ghirardelli malts
-head back to ASMo to get luggage and stuff in souvies
-wait for Magical Express pickup
-cry a little
-fly back home

And that is the rough outline of our trip as of now. I checked January hours last night and they cut down two days from 1am to 12am. Gah! My fingers will be crossed that they announce the park will be open later one of the days we are there. It seems really strange that the entire New Year's week (excluding the 31st) does not have a day past midnight.

stay tuned for all of the random planning details and photos of goodies.

Refurb Fun
So, the plans to hit up Splash Mountain have died when someone posted the information that a refurb. is scheduled January 1st-31st. It's official and on the website. Last year we only had one day to ride Splash (January 1st) before it closed on the 2nd. My only hope is Disney, for some reason (ha ha), keeps it open the 1st. We could attempt to get into the park on the 31st and back to Splash but that sounds like a nightmare.

We turned a wall in our hallway into the countdown calendar. It starts on day 100, so it is a little overwhelming, ha. The holidays have little hats added and DBF just had his 23rd birthday yesterday!

Crossing off the days is always fun.
Last year we started on the last month with a poster. Next year there will probably be a 365day countdown with a piece of yarn going around the house, ha. :)

Everyone on here raves about Baggallini sling messenger bags so I had fully intended on ordering a purple one for this trip. But then I started to look at them, and style-wise it felt really rectangular and 1990's. Sorry! I know most of you love them for their practicality not style, but like Crocs, I figure I can find something equally functional but better looking.

That is when I ended up with the LL Bean Turbo Sling bag, same price as the Baggallini bags, and free shipping!

http://i8.tinypic.com/6jnlov4.jpg

I am modeling the bag with a rain poncho, jacket, and wallet inside. There is plenty of room for my camera and snacks. And on the wrap around panel there is a flat pocket to put in an ID orrrr park ticket! Right now the pocket is great for my bus pass.

Last year I had one lone Disney shirt, a Snow White one. This made me feel like I was missing out on some of the fun. Unlike a concert where you are "that guy" for wearing the band's shirt, Disney is like a sporting event where such expression of fandom is accepted. DBF, who will NEVER wear Mickey ears or any goofy accessory, even had a shirt for every day last trip.

While I probably will only end up wearing two of them, I have started my collection:

http://i12.tinypic.com/8gekyf8.jpg

A Jungle Book and another Mickey will be added to DBFs collection soon:

http://i2.tinypic.com/6u9ws9l.jpg

As for Pegasus and Palahniuk, they have better things to do than search for Disney clothing I guess. Maybe we can convert them on the trip.

Flight Update
For the 4th time the AM flight is now sitting at 8:45am with a 12:26pm landing at MCO.

The evening flight changed for the better from 7:00pm to 7:45pm with a 9:30pm arrival back in Milwaukee.

We still need to figure out how to get to the airport, ha.

I hope we get to have decent January weather.
It should be interesting with your daughter leading the way. Is she going to wear a birthday button? I will have mine on looking around for others to wish a happy day to. :)

I am definitely getting her one...she is jealous of her daddy and I because when we go in 2 weeks it is for our anniversary and we were the buttons.

To some it might be a shock to know that between the 4 of us taking this journey there is not one of us with a car. We live in the city where we can rely on public transportation, and the costs of personal transportation are high and a risk with the way people park around here, and the amount of theft. Because of this there is an issue when it comes to getting us, early in the morning, on a holiday, to the airport 9.8miles to the south.

The trials of of transportation:

1. Our first plan was to rely on my brother who is also attending college here. He had his car with him, but found out that his first year off campus was costing more than he expected. Sacrificing his car was the first thing he did. That is the first blow.

2. Palahniuk said her brother could drive up from her home town and bring us, and he has a nice spacious van. That was the plan, until her brother realized it was New Year's Eve morning and he would want to sleep as much as possible to prepare for the night to come.

3. The train runs from town to the airport on the way to Chicago every day. There is a 6:15am train that would costs us $7. We thought this was an excellent idea, until I checked the bus route schedules. To get to the train station we would have to ride a bus to Wisconsin Ave. and then walk 4-5blocks to the train station. Which was fine, except that the earliest bus that day can get us there are 5:50am giving us hardly any time to haul our luggage through possible snow and slush to the train station. Too risky.

4. Use only the bus system. This would actually work, but Palahniuk really does not like the thought of using the buses because it would "take too long." And, if it is really cold and snowy we would have to stand up to 20minutes outside waiting for the connecting bus to the aiport.

5. The golden plan? We looked in the phone book and found an airport shuttle service and mapped out the cost online. It would cost $46 for the 4 of us, and we would have to be picked up at one location. DBF and I have the best located and larger apartment so we would all stay the night here. Pegasus is on board, still have to hear from Palahniuk. This also works because I really do not want to bring a wool coat, mittens, scarves, and hats to Florida. We can wear a light jacket and hoodie to the airport with minimal exposure to the outdoors.

Phew!

Subbing! I love reading this, I'm Heather from Milwaukee too :) Actually I'm not really from here I just go to college here. My family and I are going to get there the day before you are leaving! We got our Magical Express stuff a few weeks ago! School has been really busy, but now I am finally done.

And I mentioned in the first post that we would be worried about Pegasus keeping things together on our trip. We love him, but it will be a challenge.
Example: Two weeks ago he managed to lose his passport. A few days later we were taking a cab home from a party and he managed to forget his wallet (he thinks it was in the cab). So, for a little while now he has been missing items and it did not even occur to him (until I brought it up) that he needs ID to fly to Orlando. We suggested going to the DMV for a state ID because the passport would take more time to replace.

Yesterday he called me and left a 5minute rambling message about it taking 2weeks to get a state ID unless he can get proof he is going on vacation. I frantically called him back as soon as I got the message to tell him I could print out our e-mail confirmation for the tickets, and screen captures of our reservations online, and our Magical Express booklet, AND.....in the hours since he called he found his passport. So, things are all jolly. But I feel like we need to staple everything to his person.

Not many days left!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/callll.jpg

And we are kind of cheating but I bought ears from work for Pegasus and I (he was the only one who would join me).

On Friday I am going to an outdoor store to look for a water bottle with a filter.

In 24hours I will be at the airport waiting around with uncontrollable excitement!

Most of the packing is finished, other than my bathroom and hair supplies. Yesterday we made the last trips to stores and stocked up on Luna and Clif bars, fruit leather, and some Cheez-Its. Palahniuk has a stash of her own items ready to go. Pegasus is supposed to be venturing to the store to get some items, but DBF and I purchased enough to feed him if he forgets.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/packing.jpg

We are going to watch Sleeping Beauty and Lilo and Stitch tonight, neither have been seen by Palahniuk, but are important for the WDW experience.

December 31st, 2007

The ringing of the alarm clock sounded at 5am. I was up and getting ready while DBF, Pegasus, and Palahniuk, slowly came to life. Our shuttle was scheduled to pick us up at 6:10am for our 8:40am flight. While I tucked the last few bathroom items into my bag DBF fixed a pot of coffee. The coffee only served to make me jittery on an empty stomach.

At 5:45 we all sat down and waited with anticipation.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/1.jpg

Around the time the shuttle should appear we poked our heads out and saw the shuttle waiting in the morning darkness. In a flurry we grabbed our luggage and gave the apartment a last check. As we locked the door our Disney vacation began.

Squished into the back bench of the shuttle we chatted and giggled on the way to the airport. We arrived to a bustling airport and I thanked my lucky stars we were not flying Midwest. A massive line of people flowed down the length of the lower level. After our easy check in and passage through security we staked out some seats and grabbed breakfast. We had parfaits that sounded soothing before a flight, but Pegasus munched on a ham sandwich with Coke.

Palahniuk and Pegasus on the plane.

me on the plane.

Our flight went smoothly and we all pressed our faces to the windows as we were landing in Orlando. The first glimpse of a palm tree signaled that we had left bleak Milwaukee. Magical Express was where we left it last year and soon we were on a bus heading toward WDW. We made sure Pegasus was sitting up front so he could see as he entered for the first time.

ASMo was fairly vacant when we arrived and surprisingly we got right into our room. Lower level of Mighty Ducks facing the pool. At that time they could not verify if we would have to move in the morning for our continuing reservation, but we had our fingers crossed.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/chris1.jpg

Now, it was time to head to Beaches and Cream for the Kitchen Sink! We took the walking path from MGM and it took a little bit of time to locate the soda shop. I knew it was located behind Stormalong Bay, but I did not plan for fencing and no visible signage. We ended up winding our way from the lobby, and finding a patio table to sit for our hour wait. There really is not a lot of seating!

stay tuned for our indulgence!

And when the twinkling lights of our taser thing went off we were off our seats and toward the host. We were seated near the juke box and our cheery server greeted us. We shyly placed our order for the Kitchen Sink and two orders of fries.

Wielding a spoon we each dug into the massive pile of ice cream. My side started with strawberry, and a scoop of coffee was hidden in the middle. The chunks of brownie were tricky because they would push down into the the mushy mess when you tried to take a piece. After some time it stopped looking like a pretty sundae.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/14.jpg

and Pegasus resorted to sucking it through a straw.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/15.jpg

In the end we had an inch of slop that no one felt like slurping up. I feel we conquered the Kitchen Sink.

the evening will come and conclude in the next installment!

After the feast of ice cream we wandered back to the lobby and as we were about to leave it started raining. Really, as we were walking out the door rain started coming down. This was enough for us to retreat back to the gingerbread and chocolate carousel and consider our next move. I called for the rain gear to come out, but Pegasus had not taken our words seriously about Florida weather and his poncho was sitting back in our room. He stated he would rather not go outside and we should wait it out. That started some exploration of the resort. I am more into themes of different cultures so the Beach Club did not really interest me, but it is a really nice resort and I am glad I had a chance to visit for of WDW property.

After wandering around the gift shop we saw a sign pointing to seating in the Solarium. Sounded interesting enough, so we wandered down more halls until we came to an area with wicker seating. The larger room was occupied by men watching a football game so we kept to our little area in the hall. With the weather we were surprised more people were not crowding the seating.

We looked for all of the hidden Mickey's in the paintings, and I took a few photos that looked like scenes from a play.

When the rain went down to a mist we decided to head toward Downtown Disney for our pre-park merchandise check. There were not as large of a crowd as I was prepared for but we could see the spotlights from Pleasure Island.

DBF looking like an eager child at Disney World, because that is what he is!

After touring each store we headed back to the resort to pick up a snack and a bottle of sparkling wine. It was too early to tune into the Time Square so we put on Ice Princess. In our pajamas we sat cozy until midnight and celebrated the New Year. When they showed the Magic Kingdom on TV we saw the fireworks and ran outside to see if we could hear any going off at the parks. We could and we followed the sound to the parking lot (barefoot and running)to where we saw a few displays just above the trees. It was a magical moment for the start of the year.

January 1st, 2008

This morning we woke up at 6am. I was first up and it took a second to remember that I was in a hotel room in Disney World! After juggling the bathroom and grabbing snacks from breakfast we packed our belongings ready to move if we could not have the same room. At 7:30am we made it to the desk to check out and back in with our Value Season rate. The woman there verified we would have the same room! and we were off to the Magic Kingdom bus stop. Pegasus was starting to get an idea of the expanse of WDW from his journey to the Beach Club, and to DTD, and back again, now came the haul the to the MK.

We were ready for the opening ceremony, and with Splash Mountain expected to be down for refurbishment we chose Space Mountain for our first ride. Aligned with the right entrance we sat and waited.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/19.jpg

When the crowd really started to gather we had our feet stepped on by a glaring group of adults and children yelling "We are gators we push our way to the front!" I guess they were locals who also muttered something about how we should all go home. They needed some pixie dust. And then we counted down for park opening after the cheery music and we were off down Main Street.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/20.jpg

My first glimpse of the castle sent me into sobs while trying to keep pace. Pegasus pulled out his camera and got a wide-eyed look of excitement, but we waved goodbye to the castle as we veered into Tomorrowland. As most first rides go we walked onto Space Mountain. Immediately following we ran to Space Ranger Spin.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/3-1.jpg
help!

The morning worked out amazing. With my Disboards knowledge I was able to juggle FP's and ride waits. We got FP's for Peter Pan and did Haunted Mansion next. But the most amazing part of the day came when we entered Frontierland and walking along the boardwalk Splash Mountain came into view. Water was flowing down! My excitement started and then a log went plummeting into the Briar Patch and I knew SPLASH WAS OPEN!!!! I literally screamed for joy and jumped up and down. What happened to the Jan 1st down for Refurb? Plans for Thunder Mountain were abandoned to run through a nearly empty Splash queue.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/4.jpg
The ride stopped when we were next to the Briar Patch, but out of reach of the water cannon. So, we grabbed a few photos and enjoyed some extra moments.

After getting our hair soaked on Splash our Peter Pan FPs were good so we grabbed some for Big Thunder and headed over for our ride. Palahniuk had requested the ride, and knowing it always has a massive line I was glad I knew to grab FPs. We were let on almost immediately and it was funny to hear Palahniuk's response that the ride was bigger and grander when she was a child. Having no experience from childhood all of my Disney memories are current.

Mickey's Philharmagic was next, and I had kept the ride a secret. It was my planned ride to get us even more into the Disney Spirit. Philharmagic embodies the Disney of our childhood, the songs we sing and the characters that we saw on movie screens. It went over very well and Pegasus declared it his favorite attraction so far. After hitting Big Thunder, and POTC, our morning of insanity was done when the crowds started to come.

We ate at Columbia Harbour House during the 3pm parade, rode Carousel of Progress, and spent time wandering and being in the Magic Kingdom.

next is our first evening! Castle Lights and Spectro!

Wahoo you conquered the kitchen sink. I was there in March with 3 other friends and we got through a lot of it. When I went in November with 2 other friends we barely got half of it done. When the lights went off people thought we were nuts and then everyone started ordering one.

I was so worried about getting embarrassed when they do the light thing (I watched a youtube video of people getting one). But mostly I was oblivious to whatever was going on around me because of the massive pile of ice cream and toppings.

LOL I turned red the first time. Tell everyone to stop looking at me. They were so nice though cause one of my friends had allergies and they put anything she couldn't have on the side.

Just thinking about the kitchen sink is making my stomach hurt. I wonder if someone has ever eaten the whole thing alone.

One of the major events I was looking forward to was the lighting of the castle. We checked the times guide back in the morning an verified with a CM that "Cinderella's Holiday Wish" was the lighting. We ended up sitting up front early so we could make sure to see what was going on. From an attempt to watch a show last year I knew that even if someone is up front kids go up on shoulder no matter what, and I did not want to have the magical view interrupted.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/LJ4.jpg

The sun started to vanish and the castle was lit with a pretty natural light.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/25.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/26.jpg

Once the show started we were quickly swept up in the nasty crowd issues that often befall these situations. The rest of the people in the crowd stood up, but the second we started to our feet a vicious man screamed at us to sit down so his children could see. The problem is that the stage is so tall I could only see the characters' heads when they were at mid-stage. It was only when they came to the edge that I could manage to see what was going on. I ended up kneeling on my poor knees feeling stressed the entire time. Beside us the family stood up and the man tried yelling at them for a few minutes. Situations like that really bother me because I am too afraid of confrontation to just stand and tell him that is how it works.

But I could still see the castle when it sparkled to life.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/LJ6.jpg

So pretty. I have limited experience with WDW but never have I seen so many people (when a show is not happening) stop and gaze at the castle for hours. Every time we passed the castle it was a spectacle exciting all visitors.

Once the show ended we headed to Main Street to stake out Spectro seats. What I think I will dub "my spot" from now on is in front of the Confectionary. There is a light pole and trash can that are just before the area roped off for crossing. It serves as a protective little nook and a pole to lean against while waiting. We threw down ponchos and cuddled up on the curb to watch the balloon man and guests bustling.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/30.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/1-1.jpg

Palahniuk and I also ran for Pineapple floats!!! We had a fun time trying to carrying the sagging desserts back to our seats, weaving through crowds, and I may have had to lick DBF's to keep the Dole Whip from toppling to the ground. Pegasus and Palahniuk both agreed we needed to consume more on the remainder of our trip.

The parade was amazing as usual, the only one I stop to watch, and I think it is mesmerizing lights and the catchy song. There is something about the children singing toward the end that consumes you and gets stuck in your head for days. We ended our night with Jungle Cruise and it's a small world, some wandering, and then heading for our resort to crash.

next up: EPCOT and something amazing, more amazing than previous amazing things.

That father at the stage show sounds very rude. You have just as much right to see the show as he and his family do. You had a very positive attitude about it though which is great. I would have been steaming mad!

January 2nd, 2008

Another morning, and the cold front seemed to have moved in. How strange to be in Florida and putting on your jacket over a hoodie. We headed to EPCOT, arriving at the turnstiles around 20minutes before opening. A great Dream Squad CM was walking around talking to everyone creating excitement for the day to come.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/35.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/36.jpg
We waited with the Soarin' crowd (our first ride choice). Note the person looking cold in the lower left corner. I had to put on mittens until the sunlight started to warm me up.

And then we were off with the stream of people to fly over California. A gentle way to start the morning. Next target was Test Track, a ride that none of has been on. DBF and I skipped the ride the previous year to spend more time in the World Showcase. We were shivering at this point and welcomed the wait in the queue (once we were inside).

I have heard it described as one of the more thrill ride-types but it was very controlled feeling. Our biggest fear was if the cold wind would burn our faces once we accelerated. And then we were off of the ride walking down the exit area.

We noticed a group of people waiting out of the corner of our eyes and then I noticed that Pegasus was carrying on a conversation with the Dream Squad! They had started walking with us and talking about trip so far. In a way they surrounded and isolated us from the other exiting guests. And then a CM named Pete asked us if we would like to step aside and talk for a moment. Uhh, YES!

In a small side room (it was all a blur at that moment) they gathered in a row across from us fidgeting and looking animated. Then they began to speak and tell us that we were "potential winners" of a dream, and would we like to know what it is?

Obviously my mind is saying "castle!castle!" but really, Mickey Ears would be super exciting. And it is revealed that we won a gourmet dining experience for the night! I had not recently brushed up on the Million Dreams catalog so it was a complete surprise. We were really giddy and obviously accepted the experience, and they led us up to the GM VIP lounge for paperwork.

Things became more clear and we learned that we could choose from three restaurants: Jiko, Citricos, or Artist Point. While Pegasus (who was singled out as the winner for his 1st time button!) was signing extra paperwork to make sure he did not work for Disney, and we would behave, and so on...Palahniuk and I perused the selections.

We narrowed it down to Citricos and Jiko and the Dream squadders were giving us tons of information and ideas about the restaurants. Jiko seemed like it would be the best choice for us, and Pegasus put his foot down as winner and confirmed the choice.

Oh, and we each were told we would have $75 to spend on food!

They shook our hands, snapped some photos, and gave us some buttons to signify we had won an "exclusive" dream, and we were on our way floating on cloud nine.

yay!!!

Once out of Test Track we skipped our way toward Spaceship Earth, and there was a massive line. The cold was driving a lot of people indoors and it felt fairly empty out on the paths. A CM told us we could check back later and the line would probably be much less, but it would only be 30minutes as it was. We didn't feel like waiting and headed to my favorite area, the World Showcase.

Ok, I completely forgot about something fairly important to mention. Because of the cold we had called and made reservations at San Angel Inn for 1:30pm before heading to the park that morning. They had a ton of openings so we had no problem getting a warm place for warm food. When we won our dinner for Jiko we could not help but laugh that we were going to explode from food. But we really felt like Mexican food.

Once we entered the WS we headed from Canada across with the plan to get to Mexico around 1:00pm. The gift shop in Canada reminds me of my past summer. I went up to Alaska with my grandparents and all of the gift shops on the way had the Hatley PJs/shirts/aprons with the bears and moose graphics. We played in the waterfall area, which was abandoned at the time.

DBF and I.

When we crossed over into England we came across a comedy show setting up. We plopped down to watch what was a laugh riot, but I am supposed to say "it was rubbish!"

We think the sword looks Photoshopped, but it is really the foam/wood (I forgot) sword in the gift shop.

Last year DBF and I were so quiet touring the WS, but this year I felt like we were another annoying group of people who have to pick up every object to play with it or try it on and goof off.

Prior to the trip Pegasus and Palahniuk had not expressed much interest in the characters. On our first day I pointed out Peter and Wendy, but rides were more of their goal. Well, it so happened we came across a loose character greet with Rafiki, Minnie Mouse, Aurora, and Goofy while touring the WS. There was only one Character Attendant out and people were mostly walking up or forming very small lines. This was the perfect chance to touch them with another level of Disney magic. I asked Palahniuk to meet Minnie, she hesitated but decided she would. And then Pegasus decided he and DBF would do the same.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/117.jpg
This has to be one of the most hilarious photos from the trip.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/12.jpg
or maybe this one, because I have no idea why Goofy would take a Power Ranger stance, and Pegasus followed.

Around this time hunger began to creep in and we headed to Mexico about an hour early. I love the atmosphere of the pavilion. Near San Angel a line had been formed, I wasn't sure with a reservation if we had to wait or if they were people trying to get in. We stood in line, and stood in line, and it didn't seem like the people talking to the guy at the podium were ever moving. A man came out around 1pm to ask if people had reservations because the next openings were not until 3pm. We said yes and he kind of made a "good" motion that also signaled "stay in place." One family got really upset in front of us that they could not get seating within the next hour and left. When we made it up around 1:30pm they gave us our buzzer thing and we hung out to the side and listened to the music.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/38.jpg

We were seated off to the right and the second row from the river. The family before us got the table right on the rail that we had been watching with hopes. Palahniuk and I were given vegetarian menus after asking if meat could be left off of the combination platter, there was a similar vegetarian platter we both ordered. I have heard poor reviews of San Angel Inn, about it being American slop, but the combination of rice, tomato, beans, onion, and tomato is one of my favorites and I loved my meal. It was perfect for the weather, we all agreed. DBF and I also ordered a margarita each. You have to when in Mexico, I suppose. The tequila flavor was very prevalent.

After our meal we waddled out of the Mexico pavilion into the bright day light. Pegasus wanted to head to Japan, which we had skipped and saved for post-lunch. He did a short group exchange program in high school in Japan and has been in love with the culture since. He isn't extreme into anime or manga, but adores Hello Kitty and any other quirky and cute little creature the Japanese create. While he filled a basket with items the rest of us kind of wandered and considered spending money. I want the owl tea set!

I saw Miyuki was creating candy outside so I kind of hovered off to the back, but I could not see what she was doing. When everyone gathered I pointed her out but without the knowledge I have, she didn't seem like a big deal and we wandered back through some countries.

Hello fellow Wisconsinite!:wave2:

I just read your report from the beginning, great pics! I believe I read your last TR, did someone say they thought you looked like Ariel? If they didn't say that I would like to say that y truly would make a great Ariel!

Glad to hear you made it safe and sound out of Milwaukee. We flew out December 1st, thankfully it was a very early flight and we missed the snowstorm! We usually fly out on Midwest too, but AirTran had better flight times and prices. I cannot wait to hear how your dinner at Jiko went. DH & I stayed at the AKL and had our anniversary dinner there. I'll be curious to know if you met the bartender from Wisconsin who works behind the little bar in Jiko.

Looking forward to your next installment!

We headed to Animal Kingdom Lodge on the bus. I was really interested in seeing the resort and we would most likely have over an hour to explore. The decor once we got there was amazing. I would most definitely choose to stay at AKL in the future (if I had the money, maybe honeymoon?). The carved wood and details really create an atmosphere of escape.

Our first step was to locate Jiko so we would know where to report. There was a menu posted outside so we looked over our options once more, and then peeked at Boma since we were right there.

With the cold weather we were not sure if the animals would be around, but we went out near the pool area and back to the savanna viewing area. No other people were out except for some recent footprints from the pool (swimming in that weather?). Some flamingos were out and as we approached they started making a racket. I think they were upset we interrupted their quiet time.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/41.jpg

Then we headed back in as the sun went down, and collapsed on some couches to wait for our dinner. We were given a thick packet about the YOAMD so we read through all of the prizes. The giant character meal sounds amazing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/44.jpg

And then it was time to make our way down for dinner!
The hostesses took some paperwork we were told to hand them. They were really interested in the prize and because we were the first winning guests they were a little hesitant about how they handled us, but all smiles. We were seated in the lower area in a corner-type section that was really comfy and warm.

A man came out with a platter of hot towels. We all looked at each other with nervous and amused looks and took a towel each and wiped our hands. Never have I been offered a hot towel! They were lightly scented as well.

Then our server came, a really upbeat man, and he didn't mention our winning so we had this little worry that we would be handed a bill in the end. Ha. He talked to us about the menu and offered us the wine list (alcohol is not part of the Dream so we passed). I chose water at first, iced tea for Palahniuk, and cranberry juice for DBF and Pegasus. When the water was brought out I took a sip and realized it was nasty sulfurous Florida water. No other place had water that bad so far, so I was intrigued such a nice restaurant would not have it filtered for taste. Unless they wish for guests to purchase a beverage and punish the water drinkers. So, I asked for a cranberry juice, and it was delicious! Not tart like usual or artificial.

As part of the dining experience the Chef was detailed in our packet to come talk to us. We knew things had to be on track with the staff when he made his appearance before we ordered. He focused on Palahniuk and I because we are vegetarians, and he had another menu to discuss with us. After the consultation he congratulated us and wished us a wonderful dinging experience, and we thanked him for his time.

The orders:
Palahniuk
-Kalamata Olive Flatbread $9.00
-Cucumber, Tomato and Red Onion Salad $8.00
-Grains, Peas and Vegetables (with Tandoori Tofu) $24.00

Me
-Kalamata Olive Flatbread $9.00
-Cucumber, Tomato and Red Onion Salad $8.00
-Grains, Pease and Vegetables (with Tandoori Tofu) $24.00

DBF
-Lamb "Patis" $9.00
-Cucumber, Tomato and Red Onion Salad $8.00
-Berbere Braised Lamb Shank $27.00

Pegasus
-Maize and Sweet Potato "Tamales" $8.00
-Roasted Golden Chanterelle Soup $7.00
-Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon $37.00

How on earth can we eat all of that?

Our appetizers came and we devoured them and I forgot to haul out the camera. The flatbread was delicious, melted cheese and olives on bread can hardly ever go wrong. We were all enjoying the experience and talking about Disney World and our trip so far.

The pacing was very relaxed and after we had finished and had a minute or two and then the salad/soup courses came out. Pegasus' soup came out in a unique way, the bowl had something in it, more solid and neatly plated, and then they poured the soup liquid into the bowl and mixed it at the table. Our salads were amazing. The flavors were completely foreign and we meant to ask how to describe it, but forgot! Cottage cheese was hardly present but it seemed to be infused into the flavor.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/45.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/46.jpg
Pegasus enjoying his soup, and making a face as usual.

Before our main course graced the table our served came out and chatted with us about the meal so far. And we were handed some palate cleansing guava sorbet, which was also amazing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/49.jpg

By this time I was stuffed, and Palahniuk was as well. Lunch in Mexico was a big meal and I was never fully hungry before our dinner started. That did not stop Pegasus and DBF from eating their entire filet mignon or lamb shank. We poked at our dishes and I ate part of my tofu. They were larger portions than I expected.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/120.jpg
the vegetarian dishes Palahniuk and I ordered.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/121.jpg
And the braised lamb shank, in a massive bowl that looks just like the one I used last year to eat my yogurt and granola breakfast at CRT.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/shadetheworld/122.jpg
photo while we were eating our salads. Our server saw me taking a photo of the salad and offered to get one of us. yay!

Then came desert. There is always that special compartment in the stomach that can consume sweets after the food section has shut down. I went for the Tanzanian Chocolate Cheesecake, DBF got a spiced pumpkin roll, and Palahniuk and Pegasus were wimps and shared a spiced pumpkin roll. I did not try theirs, but they were in heaven, and I know I was. Very rich and neatly plated.

And that ended our meal. The manager? came out and talked with us about our evening and where we were when the Dream Squad found us. He was very pleased we chose Jiko and wanted to know what appealed to us. It felt so special being the first people to test run, and I can't help but wonder what choices other winners have made since then.

Waiting for the bus back put us in the freezing weather again and we huddled in a circle. We were super lucky that AK was have EMH so we could ride there and catch a bus back to ASMo. Our meal lasted from 7:00pm-9:30pm, it was not just ordering and eating but an experience with an atmosphere and unique flavor

Hi

We sat at the same exact place to watch Spectro I think we are going to try to get there again this time. I love the picture with goofy and congrats on the dream!

It's a nice nook, and people don't step on you if you sit down before a lot of people have accumulated on the curb. :)
and thanks!

Heather,

It looks and sounds like you guys had a great time. Love the trip report so far and can't wait to hear more about the dinner. We never really get a chance to hear all the details when we're at work. I'll keep checking back for more details. :goodvibes

Hi Lynn!
Now you can read every detail and work time will not be interrupted. :)
My photos are supposed to come in the mail on Tuesday!

January 3rd, 2008

Today was our first Park Hopping day planned. Our morning stop was Animal Kingdom where Palahniuk was excited to see a new park, and Pegasus would add on to his first experiences. The day started just as cold as the previous morning with mittens and warm shirts under jackets. When we arrived at the gates we saw the talking palm tree whirling around and watched until the lines began to move in for the rope drop.

AK presented a problem for me, to figure out our first ride and path we would take. I had remembered hearing about going past DinoLand and from looking at the map I took a risk and assumed most people would head forward and we could duck backward and around to Expedition Everest. While the music played and the characters danced and the countdown started I notified the group of the route we would be taking and to follow me.

When the crowds started moving we swung down the path toward DinoLand with about 20people in front of us. I wasn't looking back so I had no concept of what was happening. But when we reached the entrance to DinoLand the people in front came to a screeching halt. Necks were stretched and everyone looked to be in a panic for a moment, and I veered around them to the left toward Asia. They entered into DinoLand (heading to Dinosaur?) while we found ourselves alone on the path! As we came over the bridge we could see in the distance the CMs leading the other guests with the rope, and we scuttled to the standby entrance as the crowd was fed through the FP area.

We beat the crowd! I don't know how that happened, and I guess it didn't matter too much, but it was another magical moment on the trip. DBF and I told Palahniuk and Pegasus to take the front cars and we hopped in the second. Our third ever ride on EE was not as exhilarating as our previous visit, but we decided further back in the train has more whiplash (and I remember hearing that on here as well). Pegasus was totally surprised about the track change (trying not to spoil anything for anyone). The months leading up to the trip we told him he could not watch any youtube videos or specials or read about WDW in any way, and he actually listened and we were able to see his reaction to every first encounter.

After a trip to the FP area we marched on to the Safari. The line was still walk on and we were on in no time. With the weather we realized most of the animals were hiding. We saw the hippos, crocs, the male lion, and some birds.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/124.jpg

After that we checked on the Festival of the Lion King showings and selected one after our return time for Everest. We had a little over an hour so we headed to Dinosaur, and ITTAB, and did the Maharajah Jungle Trek.

I think I was sleepy from hypothermia. I would have been wearing a winter jacket here in Wisconsin, and not outside for several hours, so it is valid to complain.

shot from the bridge, still the morning light.

Remember in LOST when Kate is in the stand of bamboo? We were reenacting the scenes from the show.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/128.jpg
We saw Devine! I was really excited but she was leaving so I got one overexposed shot before she vanished.

Then it was time for another EE experience, and we ended up in front again! Oh well, it was still a blast and I bought a little Yeti because I wanted it last year. We also saw the EE Mickey plush and bought him too. FOTLK started in 30minutes so we headed back over there and waited until we were let in. We ended up being in the Lion section, roarr!

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/130.jpg

Then DBF and I let Palahniuk and Pegasus know if they wanted to stay and do the other attractions they could, but we had done everything we wanted. They stuck with us and said they were satisfied with what they saw, and we headed to the Magic Kingdom!

Magic Kingggdom, we were back! Since we did almost every ride the first day we could take it easy this time. Our first objective was food! Mexican still sounded good so we headed to El Pirata y el Perico, which was closed last year when we were there. Palahniuk and I got veggie tacos while DBF and Pegasus tried to figure out what they would do. And Turkey legs were calling their names.

AVERT YOUR EYES if turkey leg consumption disturbs you as much as it does me (but it is also amusing).

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/132.jpg
DBF and Pegasus are proud of their turkey legs.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/131.jpg
DBF eats in a very clean and neat way.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/133.jpg
Pegasus was ripping his apart and making an awful mess (we were thankfully finished with our tacos by the time this happened)

And then we wondered if the Pirate Tutorial would be happening, and it was!
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/134.jpg
The really good Jack Sparrow was appearing, he is so spot on. I hesitated when he asked for people to pledge to the pirate life, and I wish I had raised my hand. I saw several big kids getting their papers throughout the trip.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/144.jpg

In a mood for shows we ventured by Fairytale Garden and decided to sit down for the next show. We sat on the wall behind the seat area.

Belle being dramatic.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/137.jpg
I cast a spellll on you!

It's such a cute little show.
And then we hit the rides, in some order, whatever ones had lower waits as the sun was setting. We rode the TTA as the castle lights came on. The most relaxing ride in the World. The CM was kind enough to let us make a few rounds.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/146.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/141.jpg
Four college kids DO NOT fit into a teacup. We ran to the cup and as we sat down our knees all smacked and then we had to split up. :(

What do we do when we want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere? We headed back to the vacant Fairytale Garden and played with our cameras.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/139.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/140.jpg

That was until we decided we craved our pineapple floats! So, we headed to over to grab some and then we hid in Pecos Bill's where it was warm enough to consume our treats.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/143.jpg
As an early birthday present (next day is my birthday) Pegasus and Palahniuk got me a wand! Pretty lights are so much fun.

Then we did Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, and who knows what until park close. Another day came to a close, and my birthday was on the horizon with another day at the Magic Kingdom.

Sometimes I stop and think about how lucky I am as a person. For the second year in a row I would wake up on my birthday in a Disney resort and make my way to the Magic Kingdom.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/147.jpg

There was nothing special planned for breakfast, we headed into the park and made our way to Buzz first thing. The ride stopped several times while our blasters were still working. I learned you can shoot the same target over and over and still get points. This was something I did not share with Palahniuk as we rode through (mwuahaha!). With the stoppages it had to be one of the best ride experiences from our vacation and an excellent way to start the day.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/64.jpg
redneck ride photo, I had to because it will probably be the highest ranking I ever manage to get.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/148.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/150.jpg

Next were FPs for Space Mountain and we spotted our pal Stitch hanging out near CoP. Pegasus and I are huge fans, and we did meet him at Animal Kingdom, but this was without his Holiday clothing.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/151.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/152.jpg
Stitch wanted Pegasus' gloves. He pulled him around tugging.

On our merry way we came upon the Mad Hatter and Alice near the teacups, we had seen them before, but were usually on a mission. The line was closed but we were told they would be back in a half hour. Without any reason to hurry we planted ourselves on the little brick wall and watched people wandering. Pegasus and I thought a smooth coffee beverage sounded good and we wandered to acquire some from the Enchanted Grove.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/153.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/154.jpg
Pegasus enjoyed his cappuccino float, but had difficulty with the Mickey gloves. (maybe this is one of the funniest photos?)

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/155.jpg
an iced mocha for me, and that sounds really good right now.

Then the characters came skipping out and confused guests by making there way through the exit of the teacups into the ride. I elbowed DBF and exclaimed “camera! Or hold my coffee!” and he jumped up to capture the moment.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/156.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/legendoftherose/157.jpg
They are delightful characters and asked about Wisconsin as the land of cheese, and if we served cheese flavored tea. Alice also decided I was a purple flower, but a friendly flower, which she did not know many of.

After our morning adventures we decided it was necessary to ride over to the Poly and grab some Lapu Lapus. Stay tuned!

Great TR so far! I just read through it and your DBF and you remind me so much of my DBF and I. I love that Snow White shirt, I packed every Disney shirt I own on our last trip as well, haha. Congrats on your dream! I missed out on Jiko on our last visit, looks delicious.

I am probably slowly killing my feet. The first few days I had comfy purple flats that I usually wear barefoot, on the EPCOT day I put socks on and killed my heel with rubbing. So, those shoes didn't come out again. Then I wore my purple Chucks to allow healing, because I do find those very comfortable and have never blistered or had sore toes. And the black strappy ones are super light flats and have a felt lining. But toward the end of the night I was more aware of my feet hitting the concrete (walking does that anyway in most shoes). And when it rained briefly toward the end of the trip the wet felt inside the shoe gave my feet a fiery rug burn that lasted a few days after I got back from Disney. So, there was a little bit of suffering, but overall the shoes didn't give me problems and I felt relaxed in my usual attire. I walk around a lot living in the city so I was able to judge what shoes work best for Disney ahead of time.
