View Full Version : Stacie's Journey for Weight Loss and the 1/2 Marathon Jan 09!

UPDATE: I reached my goal of completing the 5K in January 2008 in the required time frame and had lost 21lbs. I have not also completed the 5K and 15K for Minnie Weekend in May. All went well! Weight loss now the focus until it's time to start training for the Half Marathon.
Ok. So, fist I should probably introduce myself. My name is Stacie. I'm 27 years old, 5'1 and weigh 200 lbs. (It was 206 five weeks ago). I've been married to my Prince Charming, Matt, for 6 1/2 years. He is a wonderful (not to mention handsome) and supportive husband. I feel like my entire life I have been battling my weight. I keep trying to lose and my weight just keeps creeping further up. I've done Atkins and Weight Watchers. I've had success at both, but always gained it back. I think part of this may be because of health reasons and partly just because I like to eat the wrong things. I could possibly have Celiac(I've not been tested yet) as it is inherited and my sister has it, plus I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) which can contribute to weight gain as well... I feel like I am always tired. I've been tested to make sure everything is in check and all the test come out fine. Maybe I'm just a tired person??? :confused3
My sister Susan (larry's girl), turned me on to DIS. After a few days, I found WISH. First I was lurking and then jumped right in. I've joined the Biggest Loser 3 in hopes of getting the much needed support and encouragement to lose this weight. About the same time I joined BL3, I had this CRAZY idea... What if I could do the 5K in January for Marathon Weekend??? :scared1: I figured I'm trying to lose weight, why not have a something fun to work towards that can help me in my weight loss. Kill 2 birds w/ one stone--lose weight, and get in better physical condition. I LOVE WDW so this sounded perfect to me. Now, I know a 5K is just over 3 miles, but for me, it might as well be a thousand. I talked to my husband about it and he was all for it. So, we decided to do it. I officially signed us up about 2 weeks ago. Now, he is in MUCH better shape than me and I know he will not have a problem completing it. Me on the other hand--a completely different story. I've exercised on and off for a few years at gym we have in town, but I have not been since Jan/Feb of this year. So, I feel like I'm pretty much starting from Ground 0 on this whole exercising thing.
I've started trying to eat healthier and we also started walking. We walk 30-45 minutes 6 out of 7 days. I've walked 3.2 miles in my neighborhood a few times just to see how long it takes me since this is close to what I will have to complete in January. It takes me about an hour. The requirement is a 15 min mile so I've got to shave a good 15 minutes or more off my time. I don't actually have a training plan yet. I need to come up w/ something. I've checked out the Couch to 5K program, but I'm not even at the starting point yet. It's all I can do to walk 5min / run 1 min. From what I've seen, I need to do other stuff too like cross training. I'm going to try to make it by the gym to get a water aerobics and land aerobics class schedule. Maybe I can fit this in a few times a week too.
I'm not a self-motivator. I can push and motivate other people, but when it comes to myself I have an extremely difficult time. I guess it's just easier to give up. I do not have a lot of confidence in myself when it comes to weight loss or physical activity. I know if I had not signed up for this 5K, I probably would not be working out as much as I do right now. I need the support and encouragement of others to help me reach my goals. I know it is for ME, for MY health and that should be enough motivation, but for some reason, it's not. I do have a tendency to depend on others to support me in this--especially my husband. Let me just say...KUDOS TO HIM! He has been very, very supportive since I started this a few weeks ago. He is always willing to walk with me and help me out in any way he can. I know that if (yes, I should say WHEN) I complete the 5K it will largely be due to his support and that of you guys and my family. I think that having a large support system is very important no matter what endeavors or goals we have set out for ourself or even for trials that we may face. I know this will as much, if not more, of a mental challence than physical.
So...This is the start of my journal and my journey for better health, weight loss, and to reach what seems like an unreachable goal. For those of you that have taken the time to read over it---THANKS!!! You're comments and suggestion are greatly welcomed, anticipated and appreciated very much!!!

Hi Stacie
I'm so glad you decided to start a journal! First of all....a HUGE congratulations for signing up for that 5K. What an awesome and courageous thing to do. :cheer2: I know you will accomplish this goal!
Having support at home is such a big deal :). Sounds like you have a really supportive DH...and it's really an amazing bonding experience to set this 5K goal and work together to achieve it!
I'm really looking forward to following your journal as you train for and complete that 5K. The sky's the limit girl! :thumbsup2

Hi there stacy!
Good luck on the 5k run and this is something that you and your husband can definatly share forever.
As for training running, just keep at it, at one point my b/f was chasing me around the track trying to attack me and fear had me going for a good 2 minutes. :rotfl:
I look forward to reading your progress!

I can't tell you how proud I am of you. My initial response when I found out you wanted to run a marathon (even a "small" one) was disbelief, but I am now convinced you ARE going to do it - and do it well! Not only have you motivated yourself to get started on this journey, you motivated me to start again also. So you have created a lot of good things all by yourself. You know I will be here for you to support you every step of the way, and so will all the great people here on WISH. Love ya!

Hi Stacie,
I have PCOS too. I know how frustrating it can be. I know this sounds just silly, but the more you exercise, the more energy you will have.
It sounds like you are really commited to doing this, so anything is possible. You have support at home, and this is a great place to come for additional support. THe challenges are really motivating too. Keep up the great work. You CAN do this.
Good Luck,
Beth

Thanks guys for all the kind words!!!
Last night I was soooo not in the mind frame to exercise. The only thing that got me out there was the vision of seeing me and DH crossing the finish line together. So, I got out there and started walking. DH was going to join me after he finished cleaning the house. On my fist lap, my brother in law pulled in the neighborhood (the live beside us) and asked if I wanted to take Smokie, their dog, along w/ me. So I did. He definately helped me keep my pace and even pulled me up our small little hill and few times! I got in a good walk, but it's hard walking a dog and trying to do the 5 min walk / 1 min run so... I just walked last night. DH later did join me on my last 2 laps.
My eating at lunch yesterday was good--Subway, but last night I made bbq pork chops and corn, which was OK, but I had 3 rolls!!! 1 would have been enough, but 3... ugh! NO self-control!!!
Today is a new day so far yogurt for b-fast and about 3/4 of a grilled chicken club sandwich for lunch from Chick-fil-a. DH and I did share an Icedream too... Now, what for dinner???
Thanks to everyone who has taken a moment to read my journal and post those engouraging thoughts!!! I really appreciate it!

Hello you guys!
So, for dinner last night we went to Ruby Tuesday's. I had a good salad and 1.5 mini burgers and a few fries. I didn't feel bad about eating the fries either. I hadn't had any in sooooo long!!! I ate a few and told the waiter to take my plate because I knew if it sat there I would keep nibbling... I really didn't want to walk last night, but DH and did get out there at 9:30pm and walk a few laps. Nothing too much, but it was better than nothing.
I've had a really hard time mentally the past few days...hopefully that will improve. I'm aiming to to 3.2 miles Saturday morning...
Thursdays are normally my rest days so probably no work out today, but I gotta kick butt on Friday/Sat/Sun!!!
I've got to get past this mental lull. If I keep this up I will NOT be able to the 5K in January and that is just not acceptable. I registered and I will compelte it! Just got to find a way...
Thanks guys for your continued interest and support!!! I really appreciate it (and need it!!!)

Keep on going! You can do it, you will be surprised how easy it becomes once you get into it, then you'll become an addict!

09-21-2007, 08:13 AM
I hope I become an addict!!! A 5K/exercise addict!!! :)
Thursdays are normally my day off, but I did the treadmill last night (which I probably did faster since it helps you to keep your pace better than walking outside) and I only did 1.6 miles in 30 min (210 cal burned though!). So, I've got a long way to go to work up to the required timing... The 15 min/mile pace does concern me quite a bit. I'm trying not to let that overly concern me now because I know It's still over 3 months away and I've just started, but it's hard not to get discouraged...
It's rainy here today so I'll probably take today off. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice and DH and I will get up in the AM and do 3.2 miles. I'm going to time myself, but I expect it to be around an hour.
I'm such a sissy though. If my shins start burning in the least, it makes me want to slow my pace. I know come "race day" I will have to push through. I'm just not very good at that!!!
Thanks to all of you for your continued interest and support!!!
Hope you have a great weekend!!!

I know it's hard not to get discouraged, but YOU CAN DO THIS!!! I know you, Stacie - once you decide to do something, you stay determined to do it and no one can talk you out of it except you. So don't let yourself get down - think about what a great feeling it will be to cross the finish line with Matt and know you did a MARATHON. NO ONE in our family has EVER run a marathon of ANY KIND - you will be the first!! And I admire you for taking it on - I truly do, so don't psyche yourself out - YOU CAN DO IT!!!:cool1:

Hi Stacie! :wave2: Welcome to the WISH journals!
Congrats on signing up for the 5K! :thumbsup2 That's an awesome goal, and I'm sure you can do it!
And how great is it that your sister can be a part of your journal! (my sisters laugh at my Disney obsession, so if they knew that I chat with other Disney fans....:rolleyes1 ). Anyway, she's a great source of support both online and in person. Sounds like your DH is also a great support system. You're just gonna ROCK this 5K! :woohoo:
I started over a year ago with the couch to 5K program. I didn't do any cross training at all, just the running program, with maybe some crunches a couple times a week. But that was it. It's really a GREAT program and it really does work. (not that I'm pushing you into it, but wanted to tell you that you don't have to do cross training - I think that's more for the longer distance racers)
Keep up the GREAT work and keep us posted!

Hi Stacie
You are doing so great sweetie! I'm really proud of you...eating well, exercising :). Super job.
As for the mental challenge...trust me we ALL go through that! I have to convince myself all the time to head out for that run or workout. I find the cross-training days to be most challenging.
It does get easier as this new exercise lifestyle becomes total routine. You'll feel weird when you don't get out there. Before you know it you'll be disappointed if you miss a session due to being sick or life getting in the way.
I know you can do this. I fully expect to see you at WDW in January kicking that 5K in the butt!!! :thumbsup2

Hope you had a good weekend! Just wanted you to know I was thinking about you. Talked to Daddy this weekend and he is convinced that you and I can do ANYTHING we set our minds to - and in your case, that means running the 3K in January! I totally agree with him, and I hope you were able to get in some training this weekend in between the other stuff that was going on.
Hope you have a great and healthy day - love ya!

Hey there guys! :upsidedow Thank you for all your kind, inspiring words!!! I really want to kick that 5K in the butt!!! :)
This weekend DH and I had a great time at Wilmington and Bald Head Island. We got up Saturday and went the park and I did close to 3 miles on the trail there before we left for Wilmington. He had his stop watch, timing each lap and he would tell me what I had to do to beat my last time... My own personal trainer! It was nice. The laps are supposed to be 1.1 miles and on the last one, He said I did it in 15 minutes, which I'm not really sure about that! If so...that would be great, but I only ran (jogged actually) about 5 minutes out of that 15 so I'm not sure how my time was only 15 minutes for 1 mile...
My eating was ok this weekend. We had grilled shrimp in Wilmington at a nice eatery there (although we did share some apple pie!) and on Sunday I had a waffle for b-fast and sandwich for lunch and for dinner more shrimp...Overall not too bad, but I do think I gained about 1lb. I will know tomorrow for sure as it is weigh-in day for the BL.
Today I have been craving bad food!!! I wanted a bacon/egg/cheese biscuit so bad for lunch. I resisted, but then my brain went to pizza!!! WHAT??? So, I ended up getting a grilled cheese on wheat w/ pretzels from our cafeteria at work. Yum...not really, but I guess it's better than a biscuit or pizza!
We plan to go tonight to the park to do the trail again. Maybe I'll try 3 full laps for what I think is a total of 3.3 miles... I do not want to make this a habit because I think that would just be too much on me right now, but burning the extra cal's tonight will definately help with the weigh in tomorrow!!!
I'll let you guys know how it goes! I'm sure Matt will be timing again! ;)
My sister is right... We are stubborn and I know I'm the only one that can talk myself out of this thing...It's so easy to do that. I'm in a ok mind frame right now, but we didn't get home til 1am this morning so I know I'll be so tired tonight and I will not want to push myself...
So...my next goal is to be able to run 2 minutes straight. I can do 1 minute ok and if I really push, I can do a minute and half... I've been trying to walk 5/run 1, now... ok, well maybe by next week...walk 4/run 2...
That's all (well, definately enough! :) ) for now!!! Keep those comments coming! I always look forward to them!!! Hope you all had a great weekend!

Hi Stacie!!!! :thumbsup2 You are doing great with the eating....you can't totally give up everything you love. It's about making choices....and you made some good ones :). A little apple pie is awesome! One of my faves anyway LOL.
As for the running...I *LOVE* your 2 min goal. That is such a great way to progress with your running. 4/2 is fantastic and as you prgress you'll move up to 3/1, etc. I'm so proud of you Stacie. I just know you are going to do awesome in the 5K. :cheer2: And to be in that atmosphere...with all the support and of course disney!!! What a great experience for you and your DH!!!!
Super job!!!!

So, Today is weigh-in day for BL. Instead of my goal of being down 1 lb per week, I am up .4 so I'm 1.4 over my goal! ugh!!!! :sad1: I've been doing my walking, but I know it's my eating that has set me back. Too many carbs. I've eaten more bread and sweets in the last week than the few before. I've now got to buckle down on my eating!!! I think even though I'm up, this is a good reality check for me... Got to stay on track! Suprisingly, even though my weight is up, I'm in a good mindframe today... (My Mickey birdbath comes in today! :) )
DH started feeling bad last night, so we didn't make 3.3 miles at the park. Only 2 miles. I ran some. My runs ranged from 1 min to 2.20. I'd walk 5 min, then run until I needed to stop. Today, I'm going to do a class at the gym--aquacise, and then try a new one--aqua pilates... It's only 30 min. Should be interesting!!! I've done pilates before on land and it was TOUGH! :scared: So, I'm anxious to try it in the water. I think it will be easier for me and better on my joints. I want to try to add aquacise in my routine once or twice a week as it's better on my joints and there is some strength training involved too... I think I will save Satrudays for my long walk/run. Hopefully each Saturday my time for 3 miles will improve!
Hope everyone is doing well!!! Have a great day!
Thanks for checking in!!!

Hey, bro, what's happening? Can you believe what an inspiration my sister (and your wife) has turned out to be? She convinced me to start again with this weight loss thing and I am SO PROUD of her for training to run this marathon. I am also SO PROUD of you for helping her with the training - I know she appreciates the support she gets from you.
Hey, little sis - don't sweat the .4 gain. You'll get it off - just do what you know you need to do with your eating and keep training. The weight loss will follow - you'll see!

I've been catching up with the journaling sisters here :goodvibes: and just wanted to pop in and say hello :)
I think the plan to walk for 5 and then run for 1-2 min (as you feel you can) is AWESOME! You'll find that every time you get out there, it'll get a little easier. And don't sweat the scale...there are so many factors that can lead to increases/decreases....just keep with your plan and I know you'll be just fine. And a 5k in WDW...how exciting!!!
And kudos to Matt...what a great post dude! So awesome to see a "team" like you guys out there...best of luck with everything!

Hey there! So... I did do the aquacise. It was good. We did a lot of jumping around so I know I got my heart rate up a little bit. That class lasts for 45 min. After, DH met me and he joined in for the Aqua pilates. It was my first water pilates class--interesting!!! We mostly worked on abs... Surprisingly, they are not sore today. I just knew they would be!!! That class was only a 1/2 hr. Matt was the only guy in there! :goodvibes I was so happy he joined me. He even said he would do it again!
Eating was ok yesterday... I was going to cook pork chops tonight, but I forgot to get them out of the freezer, so I'm not sure what we'll have... I hate it when that happens!!! :headache:
We do plan to walk tonight. Hopefully I can keep up a good pace!
Hope everyone has a good day!!!

HI guys!!! Just a quick update...
DH and I had spaghetti last night (Whole Wheat Noodles...) since I forgot the porkchops... I only cooked 1/2 of the noodles, thinking that would be enough for the two of us. Well, we must have been hungry! I gave DH more than me and when I was done, I was thinking...hmmm I could eat more! When DH finished he said he was going back for more, but sadly, there was NO MORE! I guess this is my way of portion control!!! :goodvibes
We were supposed to walk, but my brother and sister in law came over. My BIL has been working on our "tiki" bar upstairs and he had stuff for it. We ended up not even trying to walk until 9:30!!! I was soooo not motivated. I told Matt--let's forget it, this can be my day off this week and I'll walk on Thursday. He wouldn't let me though. We decided to walk to his parent's house, who live just behind his brother (who lives beside us), but we took the long way around the block...
I guess that aquacise did me some good. All this walking I've been doing and yesterday my calves were hurting from aquacise... Go figure! We did do a lot of jumping. Last night my abs started getting a little sore from the aqua pilates too... I really worked it in that class so I'm actually glad to feel some results!
Ok--well, that's about it for now!!!
Thanks everyone for reading!!! I really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy life!!!

Portion control is a good thing - that's what I'm doing and it works!
Glad you got some exercise in even though you didn't feel like it - that's so hard to do, but it's good that Matt is keeping you motivated. Good to know your aquacise was effective, too - I'd like to do that if I could find a class that I could work into the schedule.

Thanks Susan, Amy, MIdancemom!
I was reading Scott's journal and as I was posting, I thought, well...I should post this in mine!
So I decided to start the Couch to 5K next Monday. I'm little leary of it because I don't know if I'm really up that fitness Level or not, but thought, what the heck...let's see what happens...So...
I've been sitting here looking at the Couch to 5K Plan going... Week 1, maybe, Week 2, possibly, Week 3, ummm dont know... Week 4, not so sure, Week 5, maybe tough, Week 6--you want me to run for 8 minutes!!!, Week 7, jog for 2.5 miles--NO WAY!!!
Then I think of Amy, Kim and Scott (I'm sure there are others, just haven't read all the journals yet) and I think well...Maybe, just maybe I can do this...
For those of you that are posting to my journal...Thank you so much!!! You are an inspiration to keep on keeping on.
I am not a runner, but just like some of you, I hope to maybe, just maybe get there one day!
Thanks for all the support guys!!!

Hi Stacie!
Thanks so much for the post :) I think it's AWESOME that you are starting the plan on Monday!! :goodvibes: I know those weeks in the not so distant future seem like a lot of miles/minutes, but you'll be surprised at what happens once you get out there a few times and start to develop your own style/pace/groove.
When I started out...running for one minute was daunting...I'd be so out of breath and felt like I was completely out of place out there...but within a couple months, I was able to complete a 5k doing a 4 run/1 walk plan. Have you read or looked at Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham? I know you aren't planning a marathon but he has some GREAT advice and pretty cool plans that you could easily modify for a 5k. I found that a combination of running and walking has always worked best for me...even during the races :)
You are gonna do so great!! I can't wait to read about your successes :)
Have a good night!

Hi Stacie,
I think you underestimate yourself. You are looking at things far in advance. You will be improving your cardiovascular endurance everyday that you are out there running. You will surprise yourself and be amazed at how much you CAN do. I know you can do it. Just remember that you can always repeat a day or week if you need to.
Keep up the great work, and we'll be here :cheer2: you on.

I agree with Beth - you CAN do this. You don't know how much you are encouraging me to keep going with my lifestyle changes just KNOWING that you are out there training for a 5K run! There's no way I can quit knowing YOU are making such changes and getting fitter EVERY DAY, even when you don't feel like it, so you can do this 5K at Disney. HANG IN THERE - you WILL make it!
Hope your eating is going well, too, and that you have a good weekend! Love ya!

Thanks Scott, Beth and Susan for the vote of confidence! It's amazing how I can support and push (lol susan!) other folks, but I just can't seem to do it to myself!!!
I am feeling pretty good today mentally. I really want to do this couch to 5K thing and I'm actually quite excited about starting it on Monday. I got up this morning at 530 and went walking w/ my sister in law and brother in law. I also weighed to gauge where I am at or would be for the BL weigh in on Tuesday...Down 2lbs! Now...If I can just make it through the weekend eating sensibly and maintain that til Tuesday, I'll be 1lb ahead of my goal (to lose 1lb per week). Even if I gain 1lb back as long as on target I'm happy!
Oh--Scott...John Bingham? Is that his name??? I checked out his site yesterday and I saw he has a new book--running for mortals. I think I may check that out and/or the marathoning for mortals too. Which do you reccommend for 1st timer??? I really want to get addicted and maybe do the 15K in 2009... That would be soooo awesome!
Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi Stacie!
Yep...Bingham is the person I was referring to. I don't know anything about the new book, but I bet it's pretty solid. MTM is the one I'm familiar with so that's why I recommended it. i love the way he gives you realistic goals and smart training plans and I think you'd find either one of the books highly beneficial. I've had MTM for over a year now and still refer to it from time to time...our Goofy training plan was based off of his plans, too :)
Have a great weekend!

Hi Stacie, I have been catching up on your journal and I must say I am so impressed with your dedication and the great support you get from your husband and other family members! Good for all of you! Aqua pilates sounds really interesting. I may have to see if my rec center offers that. I love aquasize. Great job on portion controlling that pasta. Too often we throw the whole package in the water and end up eating too much. Keep up your hard work, you are really doing great! And motivating this fellow Wisher! Have a great weekend.

Hi Stacie!!!
Wow...I'm so proud of you and your running program. Sounds like you are really putting the time and effort in to research the best way for you to reach your goals! I will second what Scott said....John Bingham is the best for beginner running/walking programs. His advice is really good and maps out an excellent plan for new runners.
Regardless, having a "plan" whether it is Couch to 5K or Bingham or Galloway....just having the plan in place is the best start to a successful journey.
You are doing such a wonderful job...and I can't wait to hear about your success at WDW this year!!!!
I'd also like to say THANK YOU so much for all the support you've given me on my journal. It means a lot to me that you guys stop by and offer encouragement...and of course laugh at my misadventures. I seem to have a lot of those  .
I hope you're having a fantastic weekend! :sunny:

Hi Stacie,
Your comment about being able to support others really hit home with me. I think alot of women have no difficulty with supporting and helping others. When it comes to believing in themselves, and putting their own needs first occasionally, is where they have difficulty. I have been struggling with this for a while now.
Keep up the great work and have a great weekend.

HI guys!!!! Today is the big day!!! I start the Couch to 5K tonight! First, update for the weekend:
Who reads Nicholas Sparks??? I LOVE his books! I've read them all, but I don't own any of them... Well...DH had invited me on a date for Friday night. To my suprise... Nichols Sparks was in Cary doing a book signing as a promotional tour for his new book "The Choice." DH bought ALL of his books, we waited our turn and he signed them all for me!!! HOW COOL!!! This was a complete suprise! After, we went to dinner and then to top things off, we went to FLEET FEET and I got new runnings shoes, socks and a much more supportive sports bra! I was so excited! Those shoes cost me an arm and TWO legs! But, I think they will be worth it! Luckily, it was their anniversary and everything was 20% off!!! After Fleet Feet, we went to Target and found some cute workout Skorts on clearance! All in all a great night!!! We had a wedding Saturday and a lazy Sunday... Hope everyone else had a great weekend!
So...I've got new gear and I'm ready to start my program! I did look for the Marathoning for Mortals while we were in Barnes and Noble in Cary and they didn't have it. Darn! I really wanted to get started on that... I think I will run out at lunch to see if maybe Wal-Mart has it, but I have my doubts! Amazon.com...here I come! :)
Yesterday was tough for me. I felt so emotionally drained. I feel like I need to go to rehab and I don't even drink! lol :lmao: I just feel completely worn down. I've had a lot mentally going on... Losing weight, running (or trying...) finances, new furniture for upstairs and it seems like a million other things. I would LOVE to get to the point of running for fun, for me, to zone out and be in my own little world. I really hope to be come addicted!
Food consumption was ok this weekend. If I keep steady, for my BL weigh-in tomorrow, I think I'll be down about 2lbs. Hopefully! I had cereal this morning and I think I'll do Subway for lunch!
It weird...I have a hard time focusing on exercise AND eating right. Yes, they should go hand it hand, but I can't seem to multi-task when it comes to that! I guess one thing at a time. Right now I am more focused on the exercise and training for the 5K. I'm not eating horrible and I'm still pretty much a steady 1lb per week so I'll take it!
Ok--I'll stop for now! Seems like I could just keep on rambling today! :rotfl:
Thanks everyone for checking in! I really appreciate your support and comments! They really help to keep me going! Love you all!!!

Your Friday sounds like the perfect date! Way to go DH!!!!
Now you'll look awesome for your new training routine.:cool2: :woohoo:
Don't worry too much about being on track with both eating and exercise. I struggle with this too. You have made a ton of changes in a very short period of time. It is ok that some things take a bit longer.
Listen to your body. I hope you feel better as the day goes on.
We'll be :cheer2: .

Hello Stacie :)
New running gear!! Congrats on finding some bargains on the clothing...and try not to fret over the price of shoes, they are the most important item of apparel to a runner...you have to get what works for you there.
GOOD LUCK tonight with the start of your program!! I know you'll do just fine. I think you are on the right track with the eating/exercising thing too...cause once you start running a bunch, you will automatically want better food (and more of it!). If you do everything at once, it might become overwhelming and setting yourself up for failure IMO.
So....good job with everything and good luck tonight! Can't wait to hear how Day 1 goes :goodvibes:

hey stacie,
I've just read all 4 pages of your thread and have to say how amazing it is to see that you have so much support. It sounds like your mentally up for this challenge and i think that's one of the most important steps towards your 5k!
I also have PCOS and struggle to keep my weight down at around 10stone- i think my body wants to be 11+, well i keep telling it that it's just tough! Hope your couch to 5k plan goes brilliantly, i'm just starting a similar thing by bupa so currently doing 3min run 2 walk- if i can do it then you def can! Believe in yourself and if your lacking motivation pop back over here and we'll give you a giant kick out the door and on your way!

Hey Stacie! You're really doing a GREAT job in your quest to be healthier. :thumbsup2 I'm a big supporter of the c25k program. It's gotten me going more than once, and it's a great plan. I agree that you certainly don't want to dwell on what's ahead with that plan. Take it one day at a time. And sometimes one minute or one second at a time. :goodvibes It's hard, I won't lie....but it gets easier, and before you know it, you're running MORE than what's asked of you. But one step at a time. And don't forget.....whether you're running 30 seconds at a time, or 30 miles.....you're a runner! And no one can take that away from you. :yay:
Keep up the great work, girl!
And thanks SO much for the continued support on my journal. I really really appreciate it.

Kim--thanks for that! I'm sure as I get into the c25k those seconds will count!!! I certainly don't feel like a runner yet...The funny thing is, I've NEVER wanted to be, but all of a sudden, I find myself really wanting to get out there and run--to kick it like you and Scott and Amy ;)
MIdancemom, tracey, amy, toystory, scott--a continued thanks for posting in my jounal! I look forward everyday to see who has posted!!! It really does keep me going!
Tink of winter--Great! Hopfully I'll see you there!
Ok, so...who is ready for my Day1 c25k update???? :goodvibes
I am pleased to report w/ stiff legs today that it was suprisingly successful!!! :woohoo: At times my jog seemed so slow I barely felt I was moving, but DH and I went out, did the warm up, the 20 minutes of alternating the required timing of walking w/ the running and the cool down. Thank goodness for him! He was my timer... I think I would have gotten confused trying to walk/run/time... All I had to focus on was getting it done. We did it! I am so happy!!!!! I really had doubts about week 1. I didn't think I was ready to run that much, but I DID IT!!! YIPPEEEEE! You guys just don't know how happy, relieved even ,that I did it. Now I feel more hopeful of really getting this done and reaching my 5K goal for WDW in January!
Today is weigh-in day for BL. I'm down about 2lbs... Since I've started my weight loss focus, not BL, I'm down a total of 8lbs. I can't feel it or see it yet, but I am anxiously awaiting the day I can!!!
So...Here's my plan for the week:
Monday: Start Couch to 5K Week 1 (Completed day 1--yippee!!!)
Tuesday: Aquacise (this will be a nice break today from pounding the pavement!)
Wednesday: Couch to 5K Week 1/Day 2
Thurday: REST!!!
Friday: Couch to 5K Week 1 / Day 3
Saturday: Maybe just leisurely walk 3 miles...not sure yet
Sunday: Walk 1/2 hr
Thanks to everyone for your encouragement!!! Catismama--I've definately never seen myself as inspiration, but thank you for that! You will find many inspiring folks on these boards. I draw my strenght from many of them!
Hope everyone has a great day!!! Love you all! :grouphug:

Good Morning guys and gals!!!
Thanks Beth! I needed that!!! :) Thanks toystory for cheering for me!
So, today is C25K Week 1/Day2. DH and I decided to do it this morning instead of tonight--we both need to work a little later tonight. Overall, it went welll. I must say...it's weird--During some of my jogging burst, I do well, feel good, others, I can barely make that 60 secs. I just don't understand that. Oh, well, I guess it is what it is... I did complete it so I'll consider that a success! It was a bit foggy and misty this morning, which I acually enjoyed!
Last night I aquacised. That went well! Stretching in the water is soooo nice! After, I decided to sit in the sauna for a few minutes. Initially it wasn't bad, but then more and more steam was added! I felt like a steamed crab! :rotfl2:
I stopped by chick-fil-a on the way home and ordered GRILLED chicken strips. The order was to go... Down the road, when I opened them--FRIED chicken strips! ugh! I really was trying to be good! Oh, well. I ate 3 instead of all 4 though!
So, I guess that's about it for now... Oh, I did start reading Marathoning for Mortals today! Thanks everyone for checking in!
Stacie
PS. I have some VERY exciting news, but I'll let Susan (larry's girl) post it in her journal! I think most of you read both. It's more pertaining to her than me... Keep a watch out! ;)

Stacie, congrats on the two pounds, you are really making progress, good for you! I hate it when I try to be good, order something healthy only to arrive home and find they messed up my order! In the grand scheme of life, its not a big deal, those three fried strips won't set you back!

:cool1: STACIE!!!!! Super SUPER job getting that running program started. I'm so incredibly impressed with your drive and determination! I think the main thing is to have a "plan" to keep yourself progressing and it sure sounds like you've got a good one going! I'm also glad you are reading Bingham's book because a lot of what he has to say makes total sense and really helps you to realize that it is totally doable!!!!
Congrats on the weight loss too  . You deserve to see results from all that hard work, not to mention the healthy food choices you've been making. I'm really proud of you!!! Keep up the good work :).

Hi Stacie!
CONGRATS on kicking off your couch to 5k program!! It'll be fun to watch your progress as you complete each week :) Don't worry about feeling different during your 60 second interval runs...sometimes I feel different every other step ;) You'll have good bursts and some bad bursts, but your drive to complete the program will keep you moving along. I wish you the best of luck.
I checked out that Running for Mortals book and it's pretty similar to the Marthoning for Mortals one...next time you are in a bookstore and they have it in stock, look at the training plans in the back of the book...I think you'll be able to combine the two and come up with a good plan for yourself if you choose to (or maybe after you complete the c25k)...just don't forget to cross train too (I think C25k omits the xt?)
Keep up the good work and have a great day!

I'm feeling pretty good today! It's a REST DAY!!!! YIPPEE!!!
Tomorrow is Week 1/ Day 3 of C25K. DH and will do it tomorrow morning. 4:30 am--he just doesn't know it yet! hehehe :goodvibes
Yeah, C25K omits the xt. Does aquacise count??? If I can get out of work on time, they have step class on the same day as aquacise. I am thinking of doing STEP at 5:30 pm and then aquacise at 6:15 pm. How many days do I need to xt? is 1 enough? It just seems wrong to to the gym on the weekends!!! I can walk in the neighborhood, I just can't make it to the gym! Maybe I'll start riding my bike longer on Sat/Sun...
Have I mentioned that I bought Marathoning for Mortals? I just started reading it yesterday. I'm going to try to get through the book and then look at the plans in the back.
Shhh... don't tell anyone, but I am toying w/ the idea of doing the 15K for Minnie... I've not decided yet... I'd rather to wait to see how this goes first, but we'll see. My sister, Susan, has committed to the Minnie 5K w/ me!!! So I am doing that for sure! If I opt not to do the Minnie 15K, I'm pretty confident I'll do the 15K in Jan of '09. There's no reason I can't achieve it by then!

Can i ask a dumb newbie question.. can someone explain xt more to me? Why is it important to mix with the plan? And what is considered xt? Thanks!!
AmyBeth68
10-04-2007, 08:49 PM
I can answer the XT question :).
By XT we are referring to cross-training activities that either build muscle, stretch muscle or add additional non-pounding cardio to your training week. In my own personal training I like to mix it up a bit and do a combination of pilates, occasionally yoga plus ski machine, elliptical and biking.
For instance...my week might typically look something like this:
Mon: rest day
Tues: Run and Pilates
Wed: XT (Elliptical) and Pilates
Thurs: Run
Fri: XT (Ski Machine) and Pilates
Sat: Walk or Bike
Sun: Long Run
It's important to add cross training into your week because it works the muscles in a complimentary fashion to the running, and builds strength in other areas such as the quads (in biking) or the core (Pilates). I like to do Pilates (or Yoga) because it helps stretch and strengthen your abdominal, back and hip muscles which support your entire frame for running or walking. Also, both yoga and pilates focus on proper and efficient breathing techniques which also aid in running! Cycling, Elliptical, Swimming, Aqua Aerobics/Water Running and Ski Machines work the legs similarly to running but without the heavy pounding that the joints take. They help to build your cardio fitness and endurance without causing additional stress on the knees, hips, ankles and feet.
Every running program should incorporate some XT in my opinion to help prevent injury :). Stacie...aquacise is awesome :). Step would be ok just be careful though b/c it can be a bit hard on the knees. I'd prefer to see you sticking with aquacise and possibly hopping on the elliptical or a bike as well on another day :). As a Pilates instructor I have to say I'd really recommend getting some core work in once or twice a week if that is offered at your gym. I just tend to stay away from anything that is hard on the knees or ankles since running itself is a bit tough on the joints.
GOOD LUCK!!!
Sorry for hijacking your journal Stacie ;). SOOOO excited about you stepping up your own personal challenge and possibly doing the 15K. Your determination and excitement is infectious! I love reading your journal. :)

OK...I know I have posted a lot today... But, I just finished C25K Week1/Day3. Yippeee!!! I actually talked on the phone to a friend of mine the entire time! Well, she did most of the talking, but as I mentioned before, Matt's gone and I thought it would just be soooo boring alone. Happy to say it was a success and maybe I was just preoccupied w/ the conversation but this one did seem a bit easier and the running bursts not too daunting. I am SLOW though. I started out walking at 3.2, running at 4.2, but toward the last few cycled backed it down to walking at 3.0, running at 4.0 which put me at 1.6 miles and 215 cals burned! Whoo hoo! Still a long way to go. I'll never break any speed records, but I'll worry more about my speed towards the end of the program!

Great job and congrats on completing the third run!! Do NOT worry about your speed...it's so not about that when you are first starting out (heck, it's not really about that later on either!)...the important thing is that you are out there doing it. A mile is a mile is a mile....and 25 min is 25 min regardless of how far you go...it's just about accomplishing the task at hand that day. Remember to ENJOY the training as you are doing it...if you don't enjoy it, you'll be more prone to quit...so just take things at the pace that is comfortable to YOU. When you are running that 5k, it's not gonna matter what anyone else does except for YOU. There will be people faster and people slower, just be able to revel in your accomplishments :goodvibes:
Have a great weekend!

Thanks guys! Good insight there Scott! Thanks! I needed that!
I had a nice weekend. Enjoyed my alone time...:goodvibes I finished reading The Choice by Nicholas Sparks. It was a really good book. I thought it was going to have a sad ending, but it didn't. It even made me get a little teary-eyed! Apparently I needed some sleep. I went to bed about 10:30 pm, which is early for me on a Friday night and I slept until 11am Saturday! WOW! I then had a lazy day. Watched some Lifetime movies, did 30 min on the TM, started on laundry, DH came home and went and saw the Bourne Ultimatim. It was pretty good!
So...my plan for the week:
So...Here's my plan for the week:
Monday: C25K Week 2/Day 1
Tuesday: Aquacise (maybe some elliptical before hand depending on what time I get off work!)
Wednesday: C25K W2/D2
Thurday: Elliptical 30 min
Friday: Pilates
Saturday: C25K W2/D3
Sunday: REST
I normally like to do the C25K on M,W,F but I would like to try the Pilates Class as reccommended but it's not offered on T, or Th--go Figure. So I'll change it up this week a little and see how it goes... Also changing my Rest day to try to get into the gym on Thurs AM and get about a 1/2hr of elliptical (xt!!!) before work. Ok--I will not metion any names, but you know who you are... this is all your fault! Me getting up at 5:30 am to go the gym! Geez! :goodvibes Maybe I can try to ge DH up to start doing the C25K in the AM too... Hmmm. I wonder if he would go to the gym and do the elliptical and Pilates w/ me too???
Ok--well, Off to get some work done! Hope everyone has a great day and a great week!

:rotfl: OMG Stacie...I'm so sorry. Guilty as charged on the 5:30 gym deal LOL! Ya know....if you like the Pilates class but 5:30 is just not manageable...you could get yourself a good video. I'd be happy to offer any help, suggestions, etc. I have to say that although a bit of a snoozer...ANY of the Stott Pilates videos are very very good in terms of being safe and very true to the Pilates method :). So that might be an alternative for you. I'd love to teach my Wish buddies here. Now wouldn't that be a fun Pilates class LOL....assuming we could stop laughing long enough between the sense of humor that you, Beth, Kim and of course Scott have...we'd be having a blast!
Anyway...I'm SO proud of you GIRL! Wow...your week looks amazing. I love that you are doing the aquacize AND the elliptical :goodvibes . I can't wait to hear how it goes :).

Hi guys!!! That would be a fun class!!! Except...when Amy falls off the ball, we'd all fall off too!!! :lmao: Could be dangerous! (You know I love ya Amy!!!) :rotfl2: How fun! Too bad we don't all live closer!!!
So, I showed DH my plan for the week. He's not real fond of going to gym...He is committed to doing the C25K training with me, and we comprimised and he said he would TRY the Pilates class on Friday morning.
Any other morning I get up early to go the gym (only leaves Thurs), he would get up early and go to work. I'll take that for now. I told him it was for own good. If he's going to do the 5K w/me and maybe even the Minnie 15K, he needs to do the same stuff, but he's not convinced of that yet... Oh, well...
So... yesterday was Week 2/Day 1 of C25K. The plan this week is to warm up 5 min, alternate walking for 2 min, jogging/running for 90 sec for a total of 20 minutes and then a 5 minute cool-down.
Dh was sick and sore from playing Basketball on Sunday so he didn't actually train. He rode the bike beside me and timed... Worked for me! I am happy to report...SUCCESS! :woohoo: Don't get me wrong... It was DEFINATELY a challenge!!! At one point, I just wanted to stop running and if I had been doing this purely for weight loss or to get in better shape, I would have, but I still had 30 sec of my 90 secs left to run and I pushed on... My running bursts are never the same. Some slower, some faster, the only thing is once I get done with them, when it's time to walk again, It's hard to keep up a quick walking pace. I tend to slow down--way down... I guess I shouldn't be too concerned about that right now. I just need to complete it. I'll focus on my timing and distance at the end of the program. Overall, I'm happy. I did it!!!
Originally I set the goal of completing the 5K as a motivation to continue to be active to help me lose weight. I've found that although loseing weight is still EXTREMELY important and I'm addicted to the scale and making sure I lose at least my 1lb per week, the foucs of having this program somehow makes losing weight less stressful. I'm focus on the training knowing that the weight loss will come as long as I eat sensibly. I'm still eating most things I want, just in moderation and trying to make healthier choices.
Today is weigh-in day for BL. I'm down 1.6 lb from last week for a total of 9.6 total loss since I've started trying to lose. I really wanted to reach a 10lb loss today (I decided to wait on my next pedicure until I reach the 10lb mark and I need one bad!!!) but, I made the goal of the 1lb since last week which acutally puts me ahead 2.6 lbs so I am happy with that!
WOW--that was much longer than I anticipated!!! Thanks to everyone who continues to read (especially these long ones!) and post your thoughts, words of encouragement and suggestions!!! :grouphug:
I hope everyone has a great day!!!

Hi Stacie!
I love what you said there. I did much the same thing...started off real in tune with the weight loss, but became less focused on it and more focused on the exercise and the running plans...it made things fun and the pounds slowly dropped off without me trying to force them off.
I think a lot of people make the mistake of setting up a grand plan to exercise a bunch of times per week, cut out every sweet treat that exists, deprive themselves of every food they love and do it all starting Monday. LOL. They totally set themselves up for failure IMO. I think you are doing the right thing...focus on your running plan and just make a few healthy choices here and there with the food...celebrate small victories along the way and tailor make your own diet over the course of a few months...I think you'll be more successful that way...I think you are already, heck nearly 10 lbs, plus your posts are fun and exciting! You seem to be doing really well and having a great time.
Look at it this way too....say you take in 2000 calories a day...if you don't change that and just add in some exercise (maybe 5 times a week for 30 minutes...avg 500 calories burned each exercise), you'll burn off 2500 calories per week...which is nearly a pound! Once you start reducing the 2000 calories OR change those calories into healthy ones...you really start seeing differences in how you look and how you feel...it's all a gradual process.
Oh and one more thing...do NOT be discouraged by the scale. Over the course of the last year and a half, I dropped over 30 pounds...but it wasn't a weekly progression...heck, i'd be working out like a madman and eating healthy and not drop a pound for a month. Then suddenly I'd go down a few pounds and the process would repeat. I now look at my weight on a month to month comparison (averaging the weekly weigh ins for a monthly average).
Sorry to be a little long winded there, but I'm really excited to see you going down a similar path...I just know you are going to be so successful! :goodvibes:
Oh and make sure your husband knows that Pilates is HUGE in the pro sports world. Google it sometime...Tiger Woods swears by it...and most major athletes from NASCAR to NHL participate in some kind of Pilates training. Maybe that'll get him more excited :)
Great job with everything...hope you have a great week!

Stacie- Glad to hear that your W2D1 went successful! I also noticed the same thing about what you said about coming off the jogging bursts, then it's harder to keep up a fast walk!! I really noticed that yesterday - it seemed the jogging bursts were more comfortable than the walking! LOL
Also, i am with you on what you said about concentrating on the working out and less on w.loss.
I am really trying hard to work out somehow on a daily basis, and while i want to lose weight, it is definately not in the front of my thoughts - i find myself making better choices eating b/c i am working out, and i want to fuel my body for strength, so i am not tired.
Weight loss will follow i am sure! Keep up the great work girl!

HI guys! Scott, Thanks for that post! Very encouraging. I will definately pass along the professional sports part to DH...
Speaking of DH...
Matt has been struggling for a long time with OCD. It has progressively gotten worse over the last year, and extremely bad in the last few months. It is a very complex and complicated situation. Yesterday, when I was on my way to lunch I got a phone call from Matt's boss and he had suffered a seizure so I headed straight to Western Wake Hospital. The ER doctor came to the conclusion that he thought it was a medication interaction between one of the meds for his OCD and an antibiotic he had taken for bronchitis. It just so happens that med he just started last week and the one that seemed to helping the most with the OCD is the one they think had the adverse interaction to the antibiotic. They also found that his liver function was elevated so they've directed him to not take it any longer. Matt is doing much better now from the seizure but we are both disheartened that the one med that was working he can no longer take. We came home and both went to bed around 6pm. The reason I suppose I am up now along with everything running through my head. As a result of the seizure, he has to go to a Neurologist in Raleigh to have brain wave testing done to make sure there are no underlying issues. In addition, until he is cleared by the Neurologist, he can't drive. In turn, I will have to drive him wherever he needs to go.
Suffice it to say I've been pretty stressed out for a while and especially the last few months.
So--obviosly I did not aquacise yesterday. I would have liked to but I was so mentally and emotionally tired after spending the afternoon in the ER, I just crashed. Now I can't sleep!
Matt is doing much better from the seizure and he is determined to find a way to get past this OCD and I am determined to help him.
One of my biggest stresses right now is that between all these appointments the last few months and now this, I am just about out of vacation/sick time at work. I don't know how I'm going to manage to get to these appointments and get my 40hrs a week. As I was stressing over this in bed earlier, it also occured to me, when am I going to work out? when am I going to clean my house? It's a dissaster right now! Clothes EVERYWHERE!!! I feel like I need to go to rehab and I don't even drink! In one way I feel bad stressing over some of this stuff because it makes me feel selfish and I know he really needs me right now. I'm just trying to figure out how I can do it all and I'm having a really difficult time finding the answer.
As a side note, DH is out of time at work as well. Although his boss seems to think they can get Short-term disability for a while if he needs to stay out to recover from the seizure and since he's on a no driving order until cleared by the neurologist. He drive between 45 min and an hour each way to work... I'm sure there will be a hospital bill coming in, just waiting to see what it will be...
So... I guess that's about it for now... I really needed to get some of this stuff out. I sent a note to my bosses to let them know what was going on and situation with my time. It will be interesting to see what their replies are. Maybe since I've expressed some of my stresses I can sleep better now!
Here's to hoping I can sleep and also maybe get up early enough to get Week2/Day 2 in tomorrow before heading off to work...

 Stacie,
I am so sorry to hear about your husband's seizure, and having to stop his medication. I had to stop an antidepressant for the same reason. It is so disheartening. I hope you can find an effective alternative.
Call your primary md. He may be able to set up or recommend a transportation service for the doctor appointments. It may help a little.
Sometimes it seems that life just kicks you in the backside. You are getting healthy, and all of a sudden something like this happens. You are an amazing woman, and you are not going to let this derail you. You may not always make it to aquacise, but you are still making healthy efforts.

Hello all! Thanks so much for your well-wishes, thoughts, prayers and encouragment. :grouphug:
Matt has fully recovered from the seizure as far as I can tell. He stayed out of work today, but he's not sure what he will do tomorrow. OCD/Mentally, today was an extremely bad for him. He says it hasn't been this bad in a very long time. I'm not sure if the seizure set him back or if it was coming off that one med... I just don't know. But's like something switched in his brain. I feel like the little bit of progress that we made--now we've taken a step back. He is so frustrated and tired of dealing with it. Honestly, I am too. I can't even express how exhausted it makes me. I go through my self-pity moments because it seems like this just consumes us. Ever since we've been together it's been an issue. I can't stay there long because I have to keep telling him that it will be ok. We are headed in the right direction and the doctors will help him. I do believe that, I just don't know how long it will take. :sad2:
On a positive note, even though we are both exhausted from the mental struggles today, we just got back from training. Week 2/Day2 of the C25K. I was soooo tired, but knew I had to do it and Matt wanted us to do it too. I was VERY SLOW...but I got it done. My jog was probably only at a 3.8 on the TM scale, but it was a jog none the less. Seems that spurt 3 is always the hardest--not sure why, but it is :confused3
So...that is about it for now... I should be going to the gym tomorrow to ellipticise, but I need to work long hours to make up some of my time...
OH--I almost forgot... I was trying to figure out a way to stretch out my back and I have one of those exercise balls at home... I almost pulled an "Amy" except I was on my back and just about rolled off!!! :goodvibes Suffice it to say I won't be trying any of those fancy moves on top of the ball like Amy!!!
Thanks everyone for checking in!

Stacie, I am so sorry that you and your husband have been going through this. I am so glad that he is recovered from the seizure, that is definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully they can find a new med to get him on that wont' have these adverse reactions attached to it. I will really keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
As a caregiver, I can relate to your feelings of being overwhelmed! You aren't being selfish, you are being realistic. Life has to go on, the bills need to be paid, house cleaned, workouts done etc. You have to come up with a gameplan that works and can be revised as life changes! I have learned to make lists in the order it needs to be done, and whatever doesn't try not to feel guilty, there are just only so many hours in the day.
You are doing great, you hung in there tonight with your training, so well done! You can do it, you are doing it! :thumbsup2

Good Day All. Today seems to be better than yesterday. I think Matt's brain is a little better today, but still not where it needs to be. It will get there though.
No working out today. Too many hours working! ugh! :sad2: Tomorrow was supposed to be our first day to try the Pilates Class at the gym together, but that won't be happening either. We will probably be getting up at 430 am to get ready and head off to work. Luckily we have an an office in Cary (I work in Clayton for Caterpillar--about a 1/2 hr away) and Matt works in Cary in the same office building as Caterpillar, but for a different company. He's on the first floor. We occupy the 3rd and 4th. Since he is on a no-driving restriction until cleared by the neurologist, my boss has approved for me to work out of Cary for a while. That works out nice and we can now ride together to the same place. He has his neurologist appt tomorrow afternoon. They say it could 7-10 days to get the results, but I'm pushing for it to be faster. We'll see what happens...
Hope everyone is doing well and thanks Amy for your kind words of encouragement!

Stacie, i'm so sorry to see what you've been going through. I work with people with all sorts of mental health difficulties and can i just say it's refreshing to see your amazingly positive but still realistic attitude towards everything. IMO that is half the battle and it sounds like your being super supportive of matt. Keep believing that another approach will be equally as good and the fact that you've got such a great focus at the moment with running can only help. Well done for sticking to it, but as Linda said don't feel guilty for missing the odd day- it'll all even out in the end :thumbsup2
You are obviously a wonderful person and I hope the psych ppl over there get themselves in to gear and hurry you through. It's not selfish of you to need time to workout/run. It's a goal you had set for yourself, and if you aren't able to keep up with it - then you might get "down". That's not good for you OR Matt. Take the time you need for you. I don't think anyone would begrudge you of that. :goodvibes

You are a strong woman and a supportive wife. It is not selfish to want time for your training. Matt knows it is important to you. In fact, if you start slacking, he will probably feel guilty. Don't worry about your paces right now, your body is under a ton of stress. Listen to your body, and you'll be fine.

Good Morning! So I got up at 5am this morning to do my Week 3/Day 1 C25K workout. (I am still working out of Cary and driving Matt to had to get up extra early!). Overall, it went good. I didn't feel great...but I managed to get through it. I did it on the treadmill since Matt is still suffering from bronchitis and didn't feel like working out. I made it though my 3 min running/jogging burst and felt ok until about 2.30. The last 30 sec. was tough, but I made it.
We managed though the weekend. Matt was super tired on Saturday from the bronchitis. We baby sat our newphew, he's 9. I ended up taking him out for dinner, bringing Matt back dinner and then DN and I went to see Ratatouille. It was cute.
Thanks everyone for your continued support and words of encouragement! Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Hi guys!!! Thanks as always for checking in me (and us!)
First the C25K update...Week 3/Day 2:
So... WE got up at 5:10 am this morning. Did not make it outside until about5:45 though... Geez, that's early! You don't have to tell me... I LOVE to sleep! I'm one of those that can sleep til like 11 or 12n on a Saturday!!! :) So...I managed through it. The first 90 sec burst was great! I was thinking wow, that was easy. That was the ONLY time I thought that during this session! Matt ran the 1st 90 sec, but did not make the 1st 3 min run. His bronchitis is still bothering him. He did manage the last 3 min though. I got through both of them. They definately weren't easy. But, I made it. I can always tell when I'm getting tired of running because my breathing changes. I start out w/ 2 breathes in, 1 on the left foot, 1 on the right and then blow out for 2 steps... Towards the last minute of the 3--especially the last 30 sec, I just start breathing however I can, huffin and puffin! I tried to stay conscious of my form. Head and chest up, back straight, breathing pattern, but the breathing did suffer! At some points, I know I'm moving, but it barely feels like it. I feel like my legs are heavy and I'm not making any progress even though I see the mailboxes go by! I try to remember that I am supposed to be a conversational pace a 6.5-7.5 effort level, not the race pace, but it's hard to make yourself believe that's ok. I feel like I should bust it out everytime, but according to MfM book, I don't think you are. I am not going to try to worry about that too much. My goal is just to get through the work out. I have time later, after the C25K to work on my breathing, my form, and my pace/timing. I keep reminding myself that the one and only goal is complete the 5K in January under the 45 min time frame. I'll start focusing on the other components after that.
Wow, that ended up being pretty long! Sorry!!!
Now--DH update:
Matt is doing ok. He seems to still be having problems focusing and some problems with memory retention...but the psychiatrist says that is to be expected. I was starting to worry a bit about it, but hopefully in a few weeks it will improve. She is still waiting for the EEG report and he had the MRI last night. Hopefully by week's end we'll know what' going on. I've read that people that suffer depression/OCD, maybe a few other mental illness, that sometimes and MRI will help. I don't for how long, but it's something to do with the magnetic forse? I don't know, but he did seem in better spirits after it was over. Anyway, so the psychiatrist seems to think he can possibly go back on that one med that was helping him. She just want to hear from the neurologist first. So...we're still waiting popcorn:: Seems that way w/ doctors...always waiting... I'll keep you posted!
Other stuff:
I've been pretty down the past week, but I am in better spirits today too. Not sure how long it will stay that way, but it's ok. I know it will all get better over time, it's just not knowing how long it will take. I'm a pretty internally stong and indepent person, but sometimes you just get tired of dealing. You know you can't or won't give up, you know it will get better, you're just tired. You feel like you've reached your breaking point, but you don't break, you just keep going--what choice do you have??? Well, there are other choices, but none which would actually make anything better in the long run. As humans, we want things and we want them now. We want the bad stuff to be over and be over now. Being patient is not easy, it's one of the hardest things to do. I fully believe that if you can make it though the tough times, to be patient, knowing it will be get better and to not give up, that the rewards in the end will be greater than the instant gratification of passifying that inner child, that inner demon, that inner selfish person.
I guess that about wraps it up for today. I hadn't planned on it being that long... Sorry you guys!!!
Thanks again for your continued support and checking in on me!!! :grouphug:
Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Great job getting your workouts in and so early in the morning too!:cheer2:
I hope Matt continues to feel better and that you both get some answers from the doctors soon.:goodvibes
I completely understand what you are saying in the last part of your post. I know that when my DH and I have gone through some rough times, that we have wanted them to be over as soon as possible. When I look back though, I realize that we have grown the most during our tough times...We have become stronger mentally and spiritually and that helps with the times to come. Keep on keeping on Stacie and do the best that you can do. We're here for you and we're cheering you and Matt on to VICTORY in life and on the race course.:cheer2:

:grouphug: Stacie -- great job this am!! Remember, you need to do what speed feels right for YOUR body - there is no point of going faster just to become hurt! Take it slow and like you said, after the program, you have plenty of time to work on your form and speed. It will be so cool to see how you do in Jan and then compare it to May!!
I can't wait to meet you and Susan in May - Now, my mom is walking the 5k, we talked her into joining us.. :goodvibes However, i plan on running the 5k.
Glad to hear the news about Matt - we are keeping him in our prayers, And you as well. :flower3:

Hi Stacie!
Congrats on your success so far with the training program!! You are doing so great!
I think that Bingham's philosophy with running is more based on time spent out there as opposed to miles logged (which makes sense if you think about it), so going at your perceived "slow" conversational pace is actually a good idea. He builds in one tempo (or faster paced) run each week so that you can start to build up your speed. For "normal" runners like all of us who aren't trying to shatter any records, it's more important to log the time/miles as opposed to running progressively faster each time you step out there. Sounds to me like you are doing exactly the right thing :goodvibes: And I bet that breathing gets easier at the end of the runs as you progress thru the program (it did for me...I can totally relate to what you were saying).
Hope your DH continues the road to recovery...
have a great day!

Hi Stacie!
WOW...5:10 am  YIKES!
You are doing so great and I totally completely agree with Scott about your running speed. The best thing you can do is just log those miles! Speed will increase with distance. Just keep yourself at a comfortable pace, stick with it and get the distance in, everything will fall into place. You'll be so amazed :). Running too fast, pushing too hard, too soon, can lead you to injury and that wouldn't be good :(. Continue to do what you've been doing....you seem to have a real grasp on how to handle the training.
Take care and have a great week! I really hope Matt continues to feel better! ((hugs))

 Stacie,
I can relate to what you are feeling. My trainer gave me a bit of a pep talk about not focusing on the what I think I should be able to do. I need to focus on what my body can do, and celebrate the improvements I see. You and I are building a foundation for sucess. You are doing an amazing job. Please don't sell yourself short.
Keep up the great work. With time, you will be seeing the numbers you want.

Good Morning my dear dis buddies! Thanks for all the nice words yesterday!
So...no training today. This working in Cary thing really stinks. It's cramping my style! I'll eventually have to start working here permanently in a few months and I'll have to adjust my training schedule--or just go to bed early, but last week and this week has really been off! I've only gotten in my C25K training! I really miss my aquacise!!! :sad1: This extra 1/2 hr to and from work seems to really take a lot of time out of your day! (plus these dr appts w/Matt) Since I have practically no vacation left, I have to make up my time, which stinks too! ugh!!! Why can't I just be rich and not have to work??? sigh... :goodvibes Or maybe become a pirate!!! pirate:
So...I won't be doing W3/D3 of C25K until Saturday... I highly doubt I lose any weight this week. Suprisingly, I did lose last week (see my new clippie!), but as long as I maintain this week, I'm ok w/ that! We've not eaten at home one night this week! Geez! I am so ready for things to calm down!!! Life! :confused3
Overall, I'm feeling ok today, just EXTREMELY tired. And the sad part is, I don't see it getting any better. I normally try to work 9 hr days M-Th and 4 hrs on Friday. Since I have to make up time, I'll be working 8 hrs tomorrow. No Friday afternoon nap for me!
Matt is doing ok. Still awaiting test results. But his spirits seemed better yesterday. Hopefully, things are looking up...
Amy and Scott--Thanks for the training insight!
Beth--I know what you mean girl! I just want to get out there and run all my troubles away, but my short little fat body says NO WAY!!! :goodvibes
Barb and Stacey--That is so cool that your mom decided to the 5K too! How awesome!!! Now, I've got to get Susan and I registered as a team (Matt's doing it too, He's registering as single)!!!
Thanks again everyone!!! You really help to raise my spirits.

Great job with the super-early morning running. :thumbsup2 I remember doing the same thing when I started the program. It's such a GREAT feeling to get out there and complete your workout first thing in the morning, isn't it? :confused3 As far as supposedly being able to hold a conversation...I think that comes later. It took me a while to be able to breathe properly and find my "groove" and be comfortable enough to "talk". I doubt that any beginner can conversate during their running spurts. :goodvibes
Keep at it, girl. You're doing GREAT.

Good morning! Not to much to report today. The weather is yucky here! Raining... No work out today. Had to come in to work early... I know I'll be so tired tonight, it won't happnen. I'll do C25K W3/D3 tomorrow. So, at least I'm getting my C25K in! Last 2 weeks have been off, but back on schedule next week! Yippee!!! Matt has been relased to drive now, so I'm back working in Clayton next week. Aquacise... here I come! :yay:
I was hoping for a pretty relaxing weekend, but I don't know... We are going to some get-together/party thing on Saturday...Not sure why. I really don't want to go and on Sunday, my parents are coming over for dinner. They never really stay long. Not that I would mind, but my dad is older and he's always ready to get home and sit in his easy-chair and kick his shoes off! :) Can't say I blame him though. I'm getting to be like that myself. I used to be "go, go go" wanting to do something on the weekend every night, now, I'm perfectly content to sit at home! I can foresee that after they leave, Matt will invite his brother, SIL and nephew to come over and play pool (they live next door). So, not sure how much relaxing will happen, but maybe I can catch nap on Saturday or Sunday!!!
ok--So, that's about it for now! Sorry for such long posts lately! I just keep typing and typing and typing!!!

Good Morning All! So...yep, we had a busy weekend! My Uncle's wife had a baby this weekend so we went to Wilson on Saturday afternoon (about a 1/2 hr away) to visit them in the hospital. He is so cute!!! A little boy named Connor. Then we went to the get-together. It turned out to be pretty fun. Sunday, was just about as I expected. Busy in the afternoon then my parents over dinner (bbq chicken--ym!!!!) and after they left, my BIL/SIL and nephew came over to play pool. Didn't leave til about 10pm!!! ugh!
My biggest news for the weekend... On Friday, Matt and I met my BIL/SIL at PetSmart. They have a dog that is taking a class there. Now...let me preface the story with this... I don't particularly care for animals too much. Not that I dislike them, I would never want any harm to come them, I've just never wanted any of my own. I'm just not a pet person. I'd rather have kids! :) I was never allowed pets as a child and I've always been scared of them, from the smalled dogs, to cats, to birds...Just about everything. Now I'm not so much scared, as nervous... Ok--so, We meet them there and Matt gets to looking around. At this particular store, you can adopt cats. So guess what...We come home w/ a 6 mo. old white and brown cat. Kennedy is his name. :scared1: I was sooooo Stressed out I cannot even describe it. He's a pretty cat and very laid-back. You can just hold him like a baby and rub him (though, I've not gotten that comfortable yet) We have 7 days to take him back if I cannot adjust and Matt completely understands. Poor thing though, he's sick. Sneezing really bad! We (well, Matt) are having to give him medication. I still cannot believe we have a cat--in the house none the less!!! His home in my laundry room--not allowed to roam the house. So, now I've got to figure out how to do my laundry! Normally I sort in there and I'll have 3 or 4 piles of clothes on the floor. Not anymore!!!
Ok--now on to C25K... Did Week 3/Day3 on Saturday. We ran around town. It went, but that was about it. I got through it. Seemed Week3/Day1 was better??? That last 3 minute jog, I just kept wanting to stop. I barely made it through. (Maybe eating waffles a 1/2 hr before didn't help!) So, I'm not feeling too confident about startind Week 4/Day1 tonight! Lots more jogs tonight! Wish me luck!
That's about it for now!!! Thanks all for checking in and your continued support! :grouphug:

OK--a quick update.
Last night Matt decided he couldn't handle the sick cat (he seemed to be getting worse) so we took him back. I was actually kinda sad. In the few days we had him, I had gotten attached and I wasn't the one that even wanted him!
Left work early yesterday to get my hair cut and get a pedicure. All that "Posh" haircut talking made me want to get mine cut. I did not go that short or for that look but just took about 2 inches off the back. Now it's right above my shoulders --actually the length I hate when I'm growing it out because it gets caught in my collar! :confused3
I did NOT do C25K last night. I am soo mad at myself! Matt and I had a little tiff (well a big tiff) and I just was not in the mind frame to do it. I got on the TM and tried, but couldn't do it. I just went to bed. So now my entire schedule is screwed up! :headache: :headache: :headache: I should have made myself do it, but I just couldn't. ugh!!! Oh well...I'll get it figured out...
Oh, plus I'm stressed about my flights in January. They are pricing out at $90 each way w/ taxes, fees... on SW, but I don't know if I should hold out for a DING or go ahead and book. $180 round trip per person is not horrible. I just don't know what to do. We'll be going back in May, but probably driving if my parents decide to go so I don't know when we'll be flying again (if i do book, then a DING comes out, I end up w/ a credit...).
ok--So, I think that is it... Sorry for the rant, I was just trying to make quick update to let you know I have not started Week 4 of C25K yet. Maybe tomorrow!
Hope everyone has a good day!

Hi Stacie, sorry about the cat woes. Maybe you can adopt a healthier one in the near future? Once you adjust to the responsibity of a pet, they can be so much company and offer so much love! But then again, they cost a bunch and can be a pain in the butt! I am sorry you and Matt had a tiff, must be in the air, dh and I had words last night too. Hope you kiss and make up  !

I just got word that I may be moving to Cary permanently on Monday, so I'll have to re-think my schedule. It may take a few weeks, but I'm sure I'll adjust and find my groove. The good thing...there is a lake w/ about a 1.3 mile walk/jogging trail around it just a few minutes from the office. I think we may try to do that a few times a week after work. The bad thing... Hi Stacie,
Sending :wizard: for your job move. When I taught fifth grade, my DH and I carpooled to work and it was 45 minutes for me and about an hour for him each way. We were blessed to have some amazing conversations during that time, but it did make exercising a bit difficult. So, when my students went to recess, I would walk around the building as many times as I could. Sometimes, I would walk during my free period (kids were at gym, music, art, library e.t.c.) too. I hope everything works out for you.

Hey girl. That's great that you're new office is right near a walk/running trail. :thumbsup2 The commute will fly by. Do they sell books on CD? When I had a 1.5 hour commute (about 8 years ago) I used to buy books on tape. :goodvibes
As far as running...do you listen to music while you run? For me, if I had to listen to myself breathing (more like gasping sometimes) or listen to every time my feet hit the ground - I'd go nuts. I get lost in my music, or tell myself....just go for one more song, then one more, then one more. Works for me, just a suggestion. :thumbsup2

Hello my WISH peeps!!! Sorry, I been MIA or not posting on my schedule (every day!!!). Life--ya know!
Quick update...
Packed up my office on Friday--that's why I had no time for Dis'ing... Weekend went well. Went to the movies Friday, saw "Dan in Real Life." It was cute!!! Sunday, we all went out as a family for Matt's Parent's anniversary. They are going to Disney in Feb and we going to send them and Matt's grandparents on a Wishes Cruise!!! I can't call to reserve until Saturday...WISH me luck!
Today was the first day in Cary... Not to bad. I think it will be ok...
FINALLY... I attempted C25K Week 4 again tonight -- Matt and I. I was in a much better mind frame than last week. It went well. I actually made it through both 5 min runs! Whooo Hoooo!!!!! :woohoo: I am feeling much better now that I've gotten it behind me and I know I can do it!
Gotta run...In the middle of preparing dinner and Matt's got to ebay tonight! He's putting his dad's 1948 (I think) Dodge pickup truck on there. They are trying to sell it. His dad has to have a hip replacement and they need the extra cash!
Thanks guys so much for continuing to check in on me and send me your support and kind words! I hoping to catch up on journals in the next day or so... :grouphug:
Good night!

Hi Stacie
Glad Cary seems to be working out :)
Well done for getting the 5 min runs :) Its a great feeling when you accomplish something :)
Hope Matts sells the truck for his dads op (shame it has to be done though)
Hope life starts to calm down a little now.

Hi Stacie!!
Just checking in...sorry I've been MIA....LTO ;). Anyway...just wanted to say that I'm glad things are settling down with work and that the commute isn't too awful.
And most importantly ;)....Congrats on a successful run yesterday!!!! You are doing great...smart move to do that week over. NOTHING wrong with that :). Good luck to Matt and his ebaying.

Hey Stacie! Sorry I haven't been around. Great job on the run yesterday! Good for you for sticking with your goal! Sorry to hear about the commute. I just finished traveling 45 minutes to school everyday for the last four years and I definitly hate to drive now! I agree with everyone else, look into books on tape. The library where I work has TONS! and they go out for two weeks just like regular paper books! Keep on keepin' on!!

Good Sunday evening!!! Whew, I've been missing you guys! So, after a successful Week 4 / Day 1, the other two days...not so good! ugh! I tried Day 2 on Wed. I just could NOT get through that last 5 min run. I was sooo mad at myself. I just did it on Monday, why couldn't I do it Wednesday??? I normally try to do Day 3 on Friday, well, that didn't happen, so I thought, ok--Saturday...nope! Finally, this afternoon, Day 3 of Week 4 C25K. Was it as successful as Monday??? NOPE! UGH!!!!! What is up w/ this??? I only managed 2 min of the last 5 min run. I just don't get it. It seems my mortality is trumping my spirit. I guess I just haven't figured out what pain to push through and what not to. Anytime I get the least bit of pain, I feel I have to quit. I think maybe I'm tying my shoes too tight. Towards the end of the 30 min, the side of my ankle starts hurting... Oh, I did aquacise Tuesday night, but for training that's about it for now... I'm doing Week 4 again this coming week.
Good news...Walmart has Disney PJs on sale! I got some Tink and Eeyore! Very comfy!!!
Hope everyone has had a nice weekend! I'm off to catch up on your journals now!!! Whew, this new job has kept me way too busy!

 Stacie,
Don't be too hard on yourself. There are lots of factors that could be interfering with the runs. your new job is keeping you busy. Are you getting enough rest? What was your last meal/snack before your runs? Dis you have enough carbs on boards to make it through? You said your ankle is rolling. If it keeps up, you may need to get a brace or wrap it?:confused3 Check with Amy or Scott about the ankle. They may have a suggestion.

Hi Stacie...Don't beat yourself up and definitely don't give up on yourself either! Hang in there. We all have bad runs...sometimes many in a row...just do the best that you can and honor how you're feeling THAT day! The plan is just that..a plan...as long as you are out there moving and doing cardio you are making progress.
As for the ankle...you might want to think about icing it when you get back from runs. Don't let that get too out of control! As for the pain in general, unfortunately starting out running doesn't always feel good :(. There is that normal ache and pain from training. The thing is....the pain shouldn't last throughout the day or keep you awake at night. If that's the case it's more injury related! Just listen to your body!
ScoJo15
11-05-2007, 08:25 AM
Hi Stacie :)
Unfortunately, I believe running has a mind of its own. Each time out there is a bit different...sometimes those miles come easy and sometimes it's a struggle to just go the first 4 minutes. A lot has to do with what's going on in your mind, along with how much rest you got the night before, what you ate, what the weather is like, etc. The only way to keep up with it and/or combat it is to keep a good running journal so you can look for patterns and try to identify what (if anything) is happening each time that run is tougher than normal.
As far as the ankle, I'm with Amy. Ice it and if the pain goes away it's probably just your body getting used to your training plan.
Hope you have a good week!! Hang in there, you are doing great!

Thanks for the encourgement guys!!! :grouphug: I know I should do a little more stretching too... Eventhough I didn't complete the "plan" yesterday, as Amy and DH, Matt said, at least I was getting the cardio in and I felt good about that...
Today is a new day. I'm still sticking w/ Week 4. Since we're in Cary now, and it's supposed to be nice today (67 degrees and sunny) we are going to do our training just after work around a lake here. I've never been there, but I hear it's nice and has a walking/running trail around it. I think it's about 1.3 miles. I think we will walk to lunch too. It's not far, but there's a little gas station/grill just down the road. Great day to get out take a leisurely walk for lunch! (Yes, Matt and I ride together to and from work and eat lunch together too most days! Let's hope we don't kill each other!!! lol!)
As an update FYI on my job/move to Cary. The job is good, but I've been way too busy during the transition! lol! They actually want me to WORK! :scared1: Who knew? :confused3

Hi Stacie,
Great job sticking with week 4!:cheer2: I'm not a runner, but I do know that each workout I do is different, even when it's the same. For example, I may do a FIRM DVD today and have a great workout and do the same DVD on Thursday and have a bad workout. There are so many different factors involved each day. The great thing is that you are sticking with the program....Keep up the good work! You CAN do it, Stacie!!!!:cheer2:
By the way, did you say 67 degrees and sunny? We're expecting 32 degrees and possible thunder snow tonight.:cold: :scared1:

Good Morning Y'all!
So just wanted to post quickly (yea, right, that never happnes! lol!) to let everyone know that today I weighed in. I don't think I normally write to much about my weight--mostly my training... But.. My top weight when I decided to finally get disciplined and do something about it was 206lbs. :scared1: I am a short 5'1 and 1/2... Don't forget the 1/2! :goodvibes When I decided to start journaling, I was down to about 200lbs. Now, If I were 6 feet tall, like DH, 200lbs might not be so bad, but for us short folks, there just no where for it to go! My goal has been to lose 1lb per week. The last few weeks, I've been at a plateau--LTO! I've not gained, but I've not lost either. I had written before that since I've set the goal to complte the 5K in January and started training for that, the weight issue has not been foremost in my mind--the training has. I still feel that way, but I still want to lose at least 1lb per week. As I start running more in the training, I know that SHOULD happen if I can control what goes in my mouth!
So...all of that, just to say I am down a total of 13lbs!!! This past weekend we went shopping. I have not bought clothes for myself in over a year--too depressing! But, I walked in a store called NY & Co. I LOVE their clothes. At my top weight, I couldn't wear anything in the store. This weekend, I spent over 100 bucks! I bought new pants and new tops. I'm a little heavier up top so the fact that I could actually wear some of the tops is just thrilling!
I've been trying to not get too overly excited because I still have a long way to go. For me though, this is small milestone in my ultimate goal. To be able to shop for clothes I like, in store I like and not be forced to buy something because it's what fits. Granted, I have clothes I like that look nice, but they have been pretty plain and not too sylish. I'm not the most fashion forward person, but I'm just happy I can now buy some things I like on the rack and on me.
On the training end of things... Yesterday after work, Matt and I did the trail around the lake here in Cary. I looked it up online--mapmyrun.com or something like that. Others had already mapped it and it looks to be about 1.2/1.3 miles. I am also happy to report that I successfully completed the Week 4 workout. I did manage the last 5 min run! :yay: At the end of the 30 min, we were about 1/2 way around the lake so we had to keep walking to get back to the car. It was almost like I got my second wind (after I caught my breath). I started walking a little faster, a little faster and even Matt made mention that I walking pretty fast because he was having to walk fast to keep up w/ me! We reached the car and I stretched out, but I was feeling soooo good! I could have just kept on walking! Normally, I'm not a fast-paced walker. I'd rather slow jog. So this was a bit suprising. It felt good though. Like it's been mentioned before, each workout seems to have a mind of it's own. This was a good one for me. I so needed this! The last few had been such bummers! I know I will have more that are bummers too, but I will draw from the wisdom of others out here knowing you have good days and bad days, good workouts and bad ones. This just helps prove to me that I can have a good workout--finally!
Thanks to all of you guys for consistenty posting and offering your care, concern, suggestions and time--we all know it takes time to read journals and post to others. As Scott said, it's not the time spent...it's how you spend the time. So thank you for spending some of your time on taking an interest in someone you don't even know. :flower3: This board is a great source of encouragement for me as I know it is for all of you--otherwise you wouldn't be here! ;)
Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Good Morning!!! Thanks guys for celebrating with me!!! :grouphug:
You know... Today just feels like it's going to be one of those days... I woke up ill and in a bad mood. TOM is knocking on the door. Matt drove to Cary like a bat out of , well, you know... I get to work, sit down and the stupid fire alarm goes off. It is sooo loud in my ear. Then we get word from some construction people it's just a test--no need to go out in the 30 degree weather...OMG.... Here it goes again! This is ridiculous! I will be deaf! ugh!
So, hopefully as the day goes on, my mood will impprove! I'm supposed to C25K tonight. I've not been able to master taking out my frustration on the pavement yet. I always just want to go to bed or just be lazy! :confused3
Ok--done venting...moving on...
On a positive note... I did aquacise last night. That went well. Between that and the C25K on Monday, My legs are a bit stiff. I tried to stretch really good Monday after the workout and then last night in the water...
Hope your day has started better than mine!!! :goodvibes

HI guys! So yesterday after the fire alarm fiasco, my day did get better...only to backslide and get pretty bad after work. ugh! So, I'll spare you details and just say it was one of the worst afternoon/nights I've had in a while... :headache: So, NO C25K last night. :headache:

I am hoping to get in my workout tonight as soon as we get home...
Today has started out pretty good and it is going to be a good day! (it'd better or I might just kill somebody! :lmao: )
So I have a question for all you guys that do your workouts outside in the fall/winter. What do you wear??? Today when I get home, I plan to the C25K (as I mentioned) and it is going to be in the low 50s and I'm sure as the weeks progress it will get cooler... I just started doing my training outside so I'm not exactly sure what to wear in the winter time. Summer-easy. The least you get away with! :goodvibes But, Matt and I can't both run on the treadmill, well, I guess we could, but that might get interesting... so just wondering what you guys recommend? Thanks!!!
Hope everyone has a great day!

Oh Stacie
Wow...sounds like yesterday was a very tough day. Hope you're doing ok!!!
But...I'll admit...I did laugh about the earrings. That is DEFINITELY a sign of being over tired!!!! :rotfl:
I hope you have a MUCH better day today. Good luck with your training tonight!
ohhhh....and about the winter running gear. Depending on just how cold it gets.....for cool temps (under 50) I"ll wear tights...long sleeve shirt....possibly running gloves...usually a hat. I'm wimpy LOL> Around 40 I'll add my fleece running vest. Anything around the freezing point I'll add my full fleece running jacket :). I HATE being cold!!!!!

11-08-2007, 11:01 AM
Good effort with the earrings. I've put two contact lenses in the same eye before and been completely confused about why i couldn't see.
Well hopefully things might just be turning around for you this week. Sorry uv had a rubbish time yesterday but you can do it. Think how satisfying it will be to look back at this journey when your running 5km.
I've just come back from the gym and managed 15mins run 2 mins walk x2= 4.8km. Now i never thought i'd be saying that a few weeks ago so imagine how far you'll get in a couple of weeks. Good luck with run tonight

Hey Stacie,
I am sorry that you had such a horrible day yesterday. Today has to be better. I've had a day where I went the entire day with my shirt inside out, and no one told me.:confused3 :rotfl: At least you caught the earring.
I hope you have a great training session tonight. I don't run, but I do walk the dog in the winter. I layer. I have running tights, but my booty is too big to just wear those, so I'll throw shorts or sweats over them. Long sleeve tshirt with a vest or hoodie over it. When it gets really cold, I have a lined windbreaker. Any temps under 50 get a hat and gloves.
Hope that helps.

Good Morning everyone! Thanks so much for checking in!!! Matt's dad's surgery went really well. The surgery was Friday and he goes home today! Seems a bit fast to me, but they had him up walking a bit on Saturday and he sat up for the day and walked around a bit with his walker yesterday so he can get around some...
So, we did C25K on Saturday. It was sooo windy!!! We muddled through though. So, I guess today we will the start of Week 5!!! This is how I feel about Week 5 right now! :scared1: Day1, I can probably handle, but Day 2 has you jogging at 8 min, walking 5, then jogging 8 again...Day 3, has you running for a full 20 min!!! I just don't know about this... I have a feeling I'll be doing Week 5 a few times! :headache: But, that's ok. I've never run in my LIFE so I know I am going to have to work up to it...
So... Question. I have some Nike Dry-fit pants. Would these be the same as running tights? What is special about running tights? Looks like I'll be working out in 40 degree weather here pretty regularly soon so, I'm trying to gear-up!
I guess that's about it for now. Hope everyone has a great start of the week!

Hello Stacie :)
Glad Matt's dad's surgery went well!! Nice to see that he gets to go home so quickly :)
Good luck with the C25K this week!! I know the full 20 min run looks omnious but just think of how rewarding it will be when you accomplish it! Best of luck to you :goodvibes:
And...Amy please correct me if I'm wrong...but Dri-fit pants are not like running tights. The pants will help break the wind (LOL) but not necessarily keep you as warm as a good pair of running tights. (again, this is coming from someone who doesn't own tights, but does own some Nike running pants)
Hope you have a good day!
postesf
11-12-2007, 01:33 PM
Thanks for the info on the pants! Normally in the winter time I'm snuggled up on the couch watching TV--NOT outside in freezing weather running down the road! So where do I get such a thing as running tights/pants??? We have Nike outlet here...Maybe I'll check them out.
So...it looks like I'm fix'in (for those of you not from the south, interpretation = preparing... lol!) dinner for Matt's parents tonight. Matt's mom struggle w/ cronic pain and is in bed most days, so his dad normally does dinner. Now since Steve (Matt's dad) has a new hip and will be a little less mobile we'll be helping out for a while. Tonight's menu, Stouffer's frozen lasagna! It'll be cooking while we're training!
After training... This will be my evening... :laundy: and more :laundy:
Hope you're evening is more enjoyable than mine!!!

As for the 20 minute run...I know it feels daunting but you will be SO amazed at what you are capable of! I totally believe in you and your ability to move forward in the C25K program :). Good luck with the week ahead :).
The running tights are designed to keep you a bit warmer than normal workout pants. I *love* the Nike Dri-Fit stuff...but I tend to not wear them for runs in the chilly temps b/c they don't offer enough warmth. Unfortunately...the stinkin' winter running stuff is way too overpriced :(. Ugh...I need a new pair of tights but can't stomach the idea of shelling out another $60-70 !!! geesh.
Have a great week. I'll be checking back to see how you are doing. And thank you so much for all the nice comments and support in my journal!

Good Morning guys!!! Week 5/ Day 1 of C25K is officially "In the books!" I managed to get through it. Day 2 is going to be a doozie though!!! Whew! Hoping to get that in on Wednesday.
So we did have the lasagne and (OMG!) these little garlic knots for dinner--which I ate way too much of! I just love bread and those garlic knots are fantastic! My FIL is getting around well. I just hope he doesn't over do it!
So, instead of :laundy: last night, I :happytv: but I just wasn't that happy! Too tired to smile! I was LAZY!!! I sat in my chair w/ my feet in our little foot/leg massager and then went to bed at 9:15!!!
Amy--Thanks for the info on the pants. I'll have to check into those...yeah, $60-70 may be out of my budget! Geez!!! Hopefully they will have some at the outlet for a bit less!
Allys--Welcome and thanks for stopping in!!!
For you runners out there...I have a question. Do jog/run for all of your time or do you take walk breaks??? Do you schedule them or take them as needed?
I'm pretty sure that even if I make to the point of being able to run 20/30 min straight that I'm not going to do that for the 5K in January. I am currently "scheduled" to complete the C25K the 2nd week of December. I'm pretty sure I'll have to repeat a few more weeks so it may take me til January... I'm not really sure where to go from there???
Thanks for all your comments and support!
Hope everyone has a great day!

For you runners out there...I have a question. Do jog/run for all of your time or do you take walk breaks??? Do you schedule them or take them as needed?
For the most part, I have stayed true to a 4 minute run/1 minute walk plan since day 1 almost two years ago. I did go through a month long phase where I took no walk breaks, but I decided that it wasn't really beneficial to me. I'm not out to set any world records...I'd rather try to enjoy the runs and races :) So, all of my training and long runs currently employ the 4/1 ratio.
I still to this day have not completed a 5k without walking at least once. I don't stay true to a 4/1 during that event but something about running that hard forces my mind into thinking I need a break so I tend to just take them when I feel that I need to. Funny thing is that I ran the entire half marathon back in October with the exception of walking through a couple water stations.
Breathing has a lot to do with it for me...when I started I went a few months before I really felt comfortable out there in regards to not getting winded. I really think cardio cross training 2-3 times per week in addition to the running helped tremendously with my heart rate/breathing issues.
So long story short...stick to what feels good to you! And unless you are at the front of the pack, you'll find people walking during all parts during races so no worries there :)
Have a good day!

Good Morning guys! Just a fly-by update! (BTW, we have no smilies that fly!)
Training... I did aquacise last night and did 20 min of aqua pilates--all ab work. Then relaxed for a few in the jacuzzi before leaving the gym.
I had to return a top to the Gap. Went in to exchange or return, came out $50 lighter (or should I say deeper in dept!)! Go figure! :goodvibes I stopped by the Nike outlet to see if they had any "winter" running pants. I opted to just look around, I was not in the mood to make nice w/ the employees there... They had plenty of dri-fit stuff, but I didn't see much for protection from the cold. I think they have a dri-fit thermal type thing, but I didn't see any. They did have fleece pants, but looked like they were more for lounging...
Today is Day 2 of Week 5. HOPEFULLY... we will get that done tonight. We are going to Wilson (30 min from home, 45/60 min from work) to see my parents tonight. Matt has a Dr appt there so we will stop in, train and eat before he goes to his appt. We are having boiled shrimp and a salad. yum! At least one 1/2 way healthy meal this week! :goodvibes
So, that's about all for now! Thanks for your continued support!!! :grouphug:
Scott--Thanks for your input on the run/walk times... appreciate it! oh, so what are you saying, i'm not going to be in the front of the pack??? JUST KIDDING! :upsidedow We all know I won't be at the front! Probably never will and that is just fine! :) I want to have fun out there too--not kill myself! Thanks again!
Hope everyone has a great day!!! :flower3:

You are doing fantastic! You certainly have the right attitude about the race, it is about having fun, not your time. You might want to check Ebay fo the tights. That is where I found mine.

Hi Stacie,
I happened upon your thread and wanted to say that I am seriously motivated by how far you have come. You are doing so well!! I started the
C25K in August but injured my knee so I had to stop. I am just starting it again this week and you have given me the motivation to really give it my best shot. Maybe I will be out there for the 2009 WDW 5K.
Good luck on the 8 min runs!

HI STACY!!!
OK...the run/walk question first :). Thought I'd add my 2 cents ;). Like Scott I did the 4/1 run walk all last year. Pretty much all of my runs followed that interval. Lately I've found that I kind of go with whatever works. Some days I tend to do the 4/1, especially on the shorter and faster runs. During the long runs I tend to run most of the distance. Surprisingly I find it easier to get into a "zone" if I don't have to worry about when to walk, etc. It took me a LONG time to get there...and it's very satisfying when I run the whole distance. On the 12 miler, for instance, I walked at the 2 mile marks for about 1 minute. Worked well with my gel/water stops :). During my last Half Marathon I ran the distance just stopping for quick walks at the water stops....I am way too uncoordinated to drink and run at the same time LOL!
I'm having a hard time finding a new pair of winter running pants/tights. I'd prefer normal looking pants but being shrimpy means that's pretty much impossible. They just don't make petite length pants. :confused3 So I'm stuck with those tights...which just aren't attractive at all. LOL. But hey...I have to be warm :). Let me know if you find a good deal anywhere! I'm searching too.
You are doing so great Stacie! I hope you were able to get your workout in yesterday! :goodvibes

Ok, not to hijack Stacie's thread, but what is these "gel packs" that i hear mentioned on different threads??
AmyBeth68
11-15-2007, 03:05 PM
Stacey (Caitsmama)...Gels are little packets of electrolyte and sugar infused gel that you can take w/ water instead of gatorade. My stomach can't take gatorade or those types of drinks but i can handle the gels. I really like the PowerBar gels :).
Hope that helps!

Hi Stacie--sounds like your training is going great! I haven't had a chance to go back and read your whole journal, but from what I read you are doing great with the c25k plan! Keep up the good work!
As for running pants, I prefer tights, and I love the SUGOI brand tights. There is a website, runningwarehouse.com, they have tons of running clothes, and the best part is the WISH racing team gets a discount!!! Hi guys!!! It is windy and cold here today!!! :cold:
Wanted to post an update...
Day 2 of C25K was Wednesday... The plan was warm up, run 8min, walk 5, run 8 more cool down. I went into it thinking...hmmm 8 min...I'm not too sure about that. Well. I got to 5 and thought, only 3 more to go, keep pushing, keep pushing. So, Did I do it??? YEP! I did it!!! Whew hoo!!! :woohoo: I was too tired to be too excited, but I did it!!! I did end up icing down the side of my shins??? It's not the front of my leg, but between the front and the side of my leg towards the bottom 1/2 of my leg. I was told that muscle is connect to the shin muscle and since it's bothering me to ice it and stretch my calves and shins really good. Is it just me or does anyone else find it difficult to stretch your shins???
So, today or tomorrow is Day 3. Haven't decided which one yet. It's cold and windy today and I just don't know if I can attempt 20 min w/ no breaks in this windiness. In one way I'm dreading Day3, in another way I am excited to attempt it to see just far I can go.
Sometimes I think I confuse myself! :crazy2: As I'm jogging, I know I'm taking very small strides. I do this to go slower and conserve energy, but I wonder If I tried longer strides, if my legs/muscles would fare better??? I'm almost scared to try because I know I'll be exerting more energy to do this and I'm afraid I won't be able to go as long before feeling so winded and
having to stop... I need a coach!
On a down side...I've gained 1lb!!! :scared1: How has this happened??? My official weigh-in day is Tuesday, so hopefully it's gone by then!!! The idea is to lose a lb a week...not gain one!
hockeygirl...thanks for stopping by!!!
born2bird...thanks for stopping by!!! Good luck on your training! I'm very suprised how my body has adapted to the C25K!
Caitsmama...thanks for asking that question...I've been wondering too! lol!
Amy...As always...thanks for your insite!
Beth...Thanks for being a pest! lol!
Everyone else...THANKS GUYS!!! I really appreciate you all so much! :grouphug:
Oh, word to the wise... If you ever decide to paint a white wall red, burgundy, berry... PRIME w/ a dark color! My mom decided to paint her kitchen "berry cobbler" and it took SEVEN coats! We saw it Wed. Turned out really nice! It only took 2 week though! :goodvibes

Hi Stacie!!
Here comes some straight up tag team action right out of the WWE:
*tags in*
To address your stride issue, I've read you actually want to take shorter, smaller strides as opposed to longer ones. The shorter strides minimize the time you don't have contact with the pavement and therefore provide a decreased risk of injury. I think each foot should hit the pavement 90-100 times each minute...or at least that's what I remember...

Hi Stacie!
 for the leg pain :(.
Hmmmmm.....some thoughts. Could be shin splints....could be just simple overuse. Icing is your best bet right now...and maybe some advil too. Try this little tip...fill up dixie cups about half full. Freeze them. Then just roll the cup up and down the leg for an ice massage. To stretch the front of your shins...stand next to a chair or something that you can hold on to. Slightly bend your front leg....and put slight pressure on the top of your foot of your back leg. The key is to put most of your weight on your right leg...hold on for support...and gentle stretch the top of the foot and shin. Another way to stretch the shins is to lay on the floor....taking a towel or tie place it around the bottom of your foot and hold it with both hands. Stretch your leg toward the ceiling and point and flex your foot slowly....then do a nice hamstring stretch by bringing that leg toward you...gently. Finally....take both ends of the towel in your left hand....anchor both hips solidly in the mat....and gently bring your leg across the plane of your body. Hold that stretch for 20 to 30 seconds. It's not a pleasant stretch but it gets the shins (some have told me) and the IT band AND the glutes/piriformis! :thumbsup2
And hey! CONGRATS :cool1: on a great run yesterday! SOOO proud of you :).

:rotfl: You guys are hillarious!!! Thanks Dr Speedy McSandwich and Dr Amy (oh, maybe we can call you Dr Pilates???)!!! I'm going to have to seriously concentrate and visualize those stretches... The ice massage--got it! :thumbsup2 The tie/towel stretch--think I got it! :thumbsup2 The chair leg thing...not so sure... are you putting one foot on top of the other???
I've been trying to do the leg/toe point/flex thing...
How do you bring your leg across the plane of your body??? Can I get some pictures here??? :) Wait, is this a pilates thing??? Do you kinda twist your back??? Oh, I'm confused!
Thanks for the stride info. Guess I'm doing ok then. So the closer your strides, the more you contact the pavement and this is better for you??? In one way I guess this makes sense, but in another way you would think the longer strides, less contact/jolting the joints, better for you?
Why do you guys have to live so far away??? I need some onsite training here! :)
Thanks--I'm kinda proud of me too!
ScoJo15
11-16-2007, 12:15 PM
(since I think I was tagged in...)
With the strides...the longer stride you take, the more you tend to "overstride" meaning your heel touches the ground first, which acts as a brake and slows you down (in addition to causing more of an impact to your legs/joints).
But as with all things, there is a comfort level there too...you don't want to feel like you are taking itty bitty steps either....I'd suggest just using your normal pace and counting the number of times the foot hits per minute and see how it compares.

Ughhh....:rolleyes2 *tag in*
Hi Stacie...yeah...it's totally confusing without someone demonstrating LOL.
The shin stretch...you keep your feet hip distance apart. You really just do that front of the shin stretch by pointing the toe of your back foot placing it on the floor and kind of lean into it. Here's a picture. It's not exact but it gives you the positioning...I think you may already be doing that one.
http://www.kidsregen.org/naturalMoves/1101/stretches/images/4_dragon_toe.gif
For the hamstring stretch, this is how you start (see the link). From there just take both straps in one hand and bring that leg across your body slightly. For instance...if you are stretching your RIGHT leg...take both straps in your left hand. Gently pull that leg across your body to the left and anchor both hips down to the mat. Just bring that leg to the left until you feel a deep stretch and hold it. You can use your right arm to support your body by bringing it out to the side.

Good luck...let me know if that helps :).

Thanks guys! You are so much! I can always count on you to make me smile!!! Thanks for the links Dr Pilates! I think I've got it! I get what you're saying Dr Speedy McSandwich, but I thought your heel is supposed to touch the ground first??? I think next time I'm out there I will try to count my strides for one minute and see what happens...
Now, I'm not normally a weekend poster, but I just had too this weekend...
Yeterday when we got home, decided to do Day 3 of Week 5. I knew yesterday was the day mentally to attempt it. I needed to complete this. So, as soon as we got home, I changed clothes and headed outside into the 50 degree weather. We walked for 5 minutes to warm up and then I mentally "settled in" for my long run! :lmao: Yes, I said long run. This is no 8, 10, 12, 14, or 16 + miler. It was 20 minutes, but my long run! It's actually supposed to be 2 miles in 20 minutes. I am SLOW!!!:snail: I think I actually jogged slower than I walked!!! I have never been so slow in my life. I think I only got a little over 1 mile! BUT...I did jog 20 minutes! That is all I care about it. I did it!!!! :woohoo: I jogged for 20 minutes! This is something I NEVER thought I would accomplish. 6 Weeks ago, the only time I ran was to the bathroom! :goodvibes I am just completely amazed. I feel like this opens up now so many possibilites. Maybe I can do longer races past the 5K. Obviously, I will need to work on the speed, but I knew I need to be slow so as not to get too winded and be able to last the 20 minutes. My body felt pretty good until I stopped jogging and started walking! Go figure! My left leg started cramping up a little, but I walked for 5 min and then stretch really good. The place on my leg I've been complaining about (lower close to my angle between my shins and the side of my leg) are still sore to the touch... Weird, but I know that doing something like this that I've never done before--I'll have a few aches and pains.
So--there you have it. I jogged for 20 minutes! I must say to you guys that during the menally tough times, it helps to think about you and what you're accomplishing and that helps me to make it through.
Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday!
Stacie

Hey Stacie! Congrats on jogging 20 mins straight!! That is great!!! You are doing so great with your training. I remember back in January when I could barely make it 20 min without stopping, and now I can go a long way without stopping. Moral of the story is that in no time, 20 mins will seem like nothing to you. Keep up the good work.
As for the stride conversation, I find that if I run on my toes, my legs really hurt. Therefore, my stride is kind of a heel-toe-push type movement. When I was younger and on the track team, that is how my coach told me to run, and quite honestly it is less painful for me, so that is what I do. I guess everyone has to find what works for them.
Keep up the good work!!!

Like Laurie said, every one of us has been there...I can remember the day I ran 10 minutes without walking...it's a HUGE accomplishment that you should be very proud of...it doesn't matter how far you ran, it's the fact that you did it non stop for 20 minutes!! Great job Stacie!! I have the feeling it's just the first of many successful running milestones for you :goodvibes:

Saturday, we just walked for 30 min and NOTHING on Sunday but a nap! :goodvibes I really don't know how some of you (and you know who you are...) do it! You must be the McEnergizer Bunnies!!! lol! :lmao:
So, for today... I'm working. whoo! Can you read the sarcasim??? Matt has to do 10 hour days this week (M-W). He gets off work on Thursday, but not Friday and we're going out of town to visit my cousins. So, I'll be doing C25K Week 6, Day 1 today alone. :sad1: But that's ok. I'll run around the office parking lot here while he's working. I only have to work 8 hrs days. This is the delima when you ride together...
I am sooo tired today! I had things on my mind last night and couldn't sleep. I know it was well past 1 before I went to sleep. Then, I must not have turned on my alarm. I set it, but did not turn it on so we didn't get up til a little after 6 and we were late to work. I hope my tiredness doesn't impact my workout too much today. I just ran 20 min (yipee) so hopefully this one won't be too bad. It has 2-3 min walking breaks between 5, 8, 5 min runs. To be sure I can do this. So why does the 8 min run concern me??? :confused3
I recieved an e-mail from my dad over the weekend and I'm not sure if he found this quote or made it up himself, but thought some of you might enjoy it. Here's the snibit from the e-mail...
"Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true." To some this may sound silly, but the end result is well worth the effort.
I was at my parents house on Wed when I did the 2-8 min runs with the 5 min walk break, which at the time was amazing for me and my parents are just so proud. My dad is very excited that I'm doing this 5K in Jan. Henceforth, the quote...
So, that about wraps it up for today... :upsidedow
