View Full Version : Paper Piecing Swap - Anyone?

Tiger Fan

I've been reading where several of us seem to enjoy paper piecings and especially Disney ones at that. I was just wondering if any of you wanted to do a little swap. I would be glad to host and we would need at least maybe 5+ players to make it fun. Everyone would make the same PP x the number of people that play, send them to me, I will assemble packages with one of each sent in and return. If this sounds like something you would like to join let me know and we can assign characters (I pick Rolie Polie Olie:D)! I'll give this a few days to see if we get enough interest. Thanks.

Hi Lisa. I've never did a swap, and I've not done any paper piecing either, but I'd love to try. Can you give me some paper piecing 101 tips hints and suggestions? Perhaps I could try Mary Poppins (her daisies) or something kinda easy for my first time.

Let me know, I'd love to be a part of this.

Hi Lisa! I have done swaps before but I have not done paper piecing but I'm like Gerri I would love to try. Any tips or suggestions - maybe there is something on one of the websites? Let me know. Thanks, Ellen

Sorry, I'm in the midst of a massive swap at the moment, and I don't think I'll be doing anymore for a while (got to make 26! that was a mistake...)

but I just wanted to tell you that there are some paper piecing patterns on two peas that don't look to hard. You have to pay for the pattern, but it's not a lot - I think about $2.

I'm doing the Disney Hats pattern for my swap, and although it's time consuming, it's not difficult.

here's a link Disney Patterns (http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/prod_list.asp?category_id=698)

Count me in. I love paper piecing!

Hints for those of you who have never tried paper piecing. I usually use a Disney coloring book (or coloring page off the internet). You can resize the design on a copying machine. Choose a simple design for a start with not many colors of paper and larger pieces. Pooh would be a good choice, for example, since he is basicly gold and red. I make a copy of my design and actually cut it apart. I decide which piece will go on top of which and leave extra paper on the bottom piece so I have an area to connect the pieces. (That sounds confusing. You don't want the pieces to be like a puzzle, but to overlap, so you have a place to glue them together).

I think graceful bee has info on paper piecing and so does two peas. PM me if I made you even more confused. I'd be glad to help you get started. I've taught loads of people to do it, but I just don't know how to put it into words. It's lots of fun.

Ok sounds good so far. I'm a swap-aholic, but very new to paper piecings. This sounds like we will all be good together. I will give everyone several days to think and find a pattern. I chose Rolie Polie Olie as my first for this swap since he's pretty easy too. What got me excited was last week I made RPO and he turned out so wonderful, now I just want to share! We'll take a few days and everyone be looking for their patterns and practicing some before we iron out the dates.

Lisa-

Put me down for Tigger (as long as the swap doesn't grow too big! I have been doing so much cutting lately, I've got blisters on my finger and thumb LOL!) I'll have to hunt down my pattern, but I did a great Tigger some time ago. Swaps are lots of fun, and I haven't participated in one in awhile, but you said the magic word when you said "Disney Character"

Happy Scrappin,
Candi

Candi, I've got you down for Tigger and don't worry about size, I will limit it to around 5-7 at the most. I will also allow plenty of time, this is the first for some of us so I want them to be good and us not be rushed. Thanks for joining. More details later.

I have the six of us below and will give it to the end of the weekend to take ONE more person. The first 3 of us listed have already chosen characters. fostrmom2mny, Ellen, and Merry if you all want to decide and list your character choice now too. On Monday I'll email everyone the final list and dates. How much time do we need? Two weeks, four weeks, just let me know what you think.

I'm holding my breath and praying as I tell you guys that I'll do Tinkerbell.
*****Please, oh please let it turn out OK*****

Now a couple of questions; do we put them (glue) together before we send them, or do they just stay in the pieces? If they just stay in the pieces, do I send a completed one, or do I send directions as to what piece goes where?

See, I truly am VERY new to this. Thanks. I'm excited and I won't need but two weeks at the most.

Oh Gerri you can do it!!! I have complete faith in you. You put the pieces the together and send completed ones. This is going to be fun and very carefree, we're just a bunch of newbie paper piecers (is that a word - :D) enjoying each other's talent.

ok ladies I'm new to the Diz and to paper peicing. I have a few questions so I'm clear on the concept. Is this paper design to be used as a backround for pictures? or are we to build in places for pictures to be inserted while we are peicing? or is the peice designed to be a collage like cover page? Also with all those seams is the paper floppy?I would like to try just not sure how , help

MerryPoppins
02-16-2002, 12:22 AM
It is a picture, to be used like a die-cut type decoration on a page. It isn't floppy, because it it's usually made of cardstock and the seams are overlapped (to give you a place to glue them together. Look at www.gracefulbee.com and see their patterns and maybe some layouts. That will give you an idea of what we are talking about. If you still have questions, feel free to PM me and I'll try to answer them.

I'll choose a pattern tomorrow, ladies. I'm too tired tonight. Just need to look at some designs and pick one that I might use sometime soon.

Tiger Fan
02-16-2002, 08:24 PM
Eglantine Price, welcome to the DIS and the scrapbooking forum. I will add you to the list now making it complete. That gives us 7 in the swap with each scrapper needing to make six of their character. You will get six in return (you will NOT get one of your own back). Once we get the characters each person has chosen we can iron out dates. Sounds good so far. And by the way, no one has chosen Pooh yet if you want him.

I'm thinking I'll do Mrs. Potts (maybe with Chip) if that's okay with you guys. Do most of you do 12 x 12 pages or 8 1/2 x 11? I'd like to know that when sizing my pattern. If some of us do the smaller format, I might shrink the pattern a bit so it won't take up too much of the page. :) Can't wait to get started. Sounds like we'll be well on our way to making our next Disney album!

Tiger Fan
02-17-2002, 12:13 AM
Pooh it is, and Merry, Mrs. Potts sounds great!! How about a mailoff date of March 11. That will give us just over 3 weeks. Does everyone think that sounds good. I'm gonna try to attach a file for you all to look at my Rolie Polie Olie PP and see if you approve. I do 12 x 12 pages and Merry the Mickey that you sent was perfect. This RPO is kinda big actually with his antenae, I'm guessing over 6 inches.

So far we have:

Tiger Fan – Rolie Polie Olie
yummy72 – Tigger
Snow White – Eeyore
fostrmom2mny
Ellen aka Snow White
MerryPoppins - Mrs. Potts
Eglantine Price - Pooh

I use 12x12 format I think my tigger is probably about 5 inches tall (?) I can't remember for sure

March 11th works for me too, I work 12x12 also,I was thinking should I run them through the zyron after they are finishe so they would be easier to mount ? what do you think? your RPO was cute. I wish I had a 24hour paper store near me, most inspiring.:)

02-17-2002, 09:22 AM
Your RPO is really cute! And I am down for Tinkerbell. Oh miss "I can do that" me has started and I think that it isn't as easy as I thought. (Can't seem to get the head/shoulder/arms right)

So I'm glad that we have extra time. I work with both the 12X12 and the 11X8. The family Disney album is the 12X12 and then I've made the kids' albums of their trip to WDW the 11X8 size.

Gerri, I used to have trouble when I first started PP. I find that if I cut a copy of a pattern into pieces (saving the original so I can see how they fit together - what angle the arm was, etc), then use each pattern piece to cut out that piece of the puzzle. Sometimes I change the pattern a little (for example my Mickey riding the Dumbo ride has an added Santa hat since we were there in December and Dumbo had a Santa hat on). Other times I reposition an arm or change what the character is doing. I always decide first where I will leave "extra" paper so that other pieces of the puzzle can be glued on top. I'm lazy. I'll draw wrinkles in clothing by myself, but I never do a face without cheating. I don't think I would ever be happy with the outcome.

Hands and faces are the hardest for me. I have develped a method of doing that, too. Say I am making a Mickey Mouse. I make his ears and face and body and shoes, etc. Then I take the face piece and cut along his smile. If you carefully line up the pattern and your "face" you can just trace along the cut lightly in pencil. Then do the same with eyes, eyebrows, and soon you have most of his face traced. Just go back with a pen and go over the lines, clean up with an eraser and you're through. Another friend scribbles on the back of the pattern with pencil and then just draws over the lines on the pattern. I find this takes more clean up, since the pencil smudges, but it might be easier sometimes if the face is complicated and small.

Have I confused you more? I hope not. What I'm trying to say is that you don't have to be particularly artistic to do this. I've taught several friends and if you cheat it's really pretty easy, but time consuming. You just have to figure out how it works. Hang in there.

March 11 works for me too, just let me know where to send them, who do I send my address to??? Oh, using a lightbox is a good way to help you with paper piecing, you can trace facial features easily that way. (Michaels usually has a 40% off coupon in your Sunday paper that you could use for one---if you have a Michaels in your area). I make several copies on a copy machine of my pattern so that I can cut up each separate piece and then piece them together. Then, I keep one full copy and all of my pieces in a ziplock bag in case I ever want to make another one later. This swap sounds fun! Thanks for organizing it! :) :)

I've been at a crop with Candi before, but we never met. I "met" her later on the DIS and heard something about her company and it fell into place that I almost knew her. Never said anything about it before. Maybe we could all meet sometime.

BTW, I'm getting ready to start a scrapbooking club in Norman soon. Maybe some of you would like to get together with us? If so, I'll let you know when we get the details ironed out. We want a fun group to get together once or twice a month just to crop together. My DIS buddies would be a great addition!

Thanks for the "heads-up" on Michael's coupons. I need to check my Sunday paper, I guess. We've had friends from out of town this weekend.

Sure, let me know about the Norman crop, my friend and I would be interested! We've cropped a lot at Rebekah's in OKC, but she is closing at the end of the month so we've been looking for a new group to crop with! :)

Oh, I got the Xyron machine at Michaels (used the 50% off coupon --original price was $150 so I got it for $75 --whoo hoo!!!!!! It is awesome! I came with a video that tells exactly how to work it and gave lots of tips. There are some cheaper xyron machines, but I wanted the one that could do 8 1/2 inch size things.

Wow MerryPoppins SMALL WORLD!! Was it one of Jami's crops at the Ramada? That's one of the few times I ever get to crop! Jami and I used to work together some time ago, and she has been so supportive of my business, and also my CMC!! Also, I have gotten aquainted with a group of scrapbookers who live all over the metro area (Yukon, Moore, OKC, MWC, Bethany, Edmond) I have gotten together with them a couple of times too. If any of you all in this area would like info on some upcoming crops, (for National Scrapbook Day and such) just let me know, I would be happy to share the information. Too funny! I guess Norman isn't really that big afterall :p

Happy Scrappin,

You're right! One of Jami's crops. Wish I had known that you were from the DIS, I would have looked for you. Someone at my table was told to find you - you had such cute ideas and they thought something you made would work for her page? Wish they had sent me! Anyway, that is how I heard about you. Guess we always need to wear our green ribbons! :)

Sure, you can email me or PM me anytime with info on crops. With my family's busy schedule, I can't always attend them, but I love the chance to jump-start my scrapping. I always get more excited after a crop. My good friend and neighbor Jacque gets together with me several times a year to go to a crop - in fact we're doing the free crop at the Ramada on March 2. Anyone else signed up for that one? Anyone else planning to go to The Great American Scrapbook Convention in Arlington this summer? Jacque and I do that, too. We met some DISers last year for a crop. It was lots of fun.

Can you give me the information about the March 2 crop? I'm in Choctaw, and I've never been to an actual crop. I am busy too, but every now and then would be a lot of fun!

I'll wear my lime green Dis Con lanyard :)

I'm starting to stress out about this piecing swap :( No actually, I just have a couple of questions.
#1. Will there be a problem gluing Tinkerbell if I make her wings out of vellum? I read on another board that the glue/splits and ect show thru the vellum :(
#2. I haven't found any green sparkle/glittery paper for her dress, and I'd like it to be glittery. If I were to add glitter or paint glitter, will that make it unsafe to use as a scrap piece?
Thanks for any help.
Gerri

Snow White
02-24-2002, 01:17 AM
You could attach the wings on the back with photo splits or glue as no one would see the adhesive that way, also: there is a special type of photo split that is for vellum, but I think it still shows through a little bit. You might look for green "diamond dust" paper, it is very sparkly (comes in several colors). My local scrapbook stores sell glitter that is labeled acid free and if you don't use diamond dust paper, Im sure that the glitter found at the scrapbook stores would work. I think our local walmart even has the glitter that is labeled acid free (6 small bottles in one package--all different colors). Hope this helps a little. :)

Eglantine Price

what about acid free glitter glue brushed onto a tinky green card stock ? you could use it to create , the folds of her skirt just as a highlight. or even over all to create the translucent effect effect of a pixie. It might look really great lightly brushed onto tinks wings.just some ideas. She sounds very cute my problem has been to wrestle my new Pooh Bear color book from my daughter so I can work on the chubby cubby!:p

yummy72
02-28-2002, 10:18 PM
Eglantine Price-

When I do a paper piecing, I usually include the directions and little xerox copy of what the finished product looks like IF it requires any kind of assembly...If the paper piecing is fully assembled, and all they need to do is stick it to their page, then I don't usually include any directions. HTH! My Tigger are done, and as soon as I can find the time, I'll be going to the post office, and they'll be "bouncing" their way to Lisa!

I've been putting this off. I'm disappointed with my Tinkerbells :(
Since I've not ever had any experience w/ paper piecing or chalking, or faces, I don't like how they are coming out. I did some of the faces, then stopped because they don't look just right, not entirely bad, just not perfect for sure. My apologies to you ladies, but maybe those of you with more experience can get your done better, and those of you like me, maybe you have a swappin/scrapbookin buddy that can help out.

I'm signed up to take a techniques class in April (won't help much on this one) so I can be shown and given direction. I really liked how they came out as generic, and some of them are still in that state, so she can be used this way.

I'm so disappointed. I did make her wings of vellum, and found a glue that doesn't show thru :) :) Found the green diamond dust paper for her shoes and dress. I even added a ribbon in her hair that came from the ribbon the my DD's and I wore at the DIS CON. So I really hope you aren't too disappointed in them. I sure bit off more than I was able to chew!

I'd be willing to host a paper piecing swap if there is enough interest. Anyone want me to start another one? Or should we wait a while so everyone can rest up?

Melissa I'd be game again. I will need a good bit of time since I don't one in mind and will have to *practice* a bit :D . Just let me know what everyone decides.
