I know nothing about international travel and I have a child (OK, he's 21) traveling from the US to Germany in 2 weeks. Regarding cell phone/telephone use...should I be looking into prepaid phone cards as the most cost effective choice for communicating Germany to US? Any information is greatly appreciated...thanks. :3dglasses

Sorry, I can't help with your question but it maybe an idea to post this on the community board as there maybe German Disers there that can help you that may not check out this forum :thumbsup2

(Edited to add) Could be a good idea to post it in the United thread which is a sub thread under the Community Board to find Americans in the services that are based in Germany.

Ekit (http://www.ekit.com/ekit/home/) are a useful company for calls as can be used worldwide and are easy to top up. Have used them for the last 6 years.

Hi, I am an American living Germany and we use phonecards. If he is affiliated with the military, he can buy the on the base. If not, he should get some at Costco or Sams Club before he leaves the US.

If he will be in Germany long, he may want to invest in the thing where you can call over the internet, from your computer? We don't have it, but I've heard about it. Sorry to be so vague :flower3:

Thanks all for the information. He'll be there for 9 days so I ended up getting an international phone card from Wal-Mart with 1000 minutes...I understand international minutes are not equivalent to US minutes but I'm not exactly sure how much phone that will afford him. Basically, I just wanted enough time for him to be able to utter to following from across the ocean..."I made it and I'm safe". Thanks again for the help.

We bought a $15 AT&T card from Walmart in July, can't remember how many minutes it advertised but it gave us 2.5 hours of international calls.
