View Full Version : Garden Grocer - Big Disappointment!

We just used Garden Grocer for this first time for our girl's trip. When I originally ordered I had the alcohol we wanted in the comments section. My credit card was charged for the groceries and the tip as I expected, however, I didn't get a confirmation or any kind of acknowledgement.
The week before our departure, we had a change of plans and decided to fly in a day early. I immediately called Garden Grocer and the rude lady informed me that I need to e-mail the new information to them she wouldn't take it over the phone and then she hung up on me while I was in mid-sentence.
I e-mailed that I wanted the groceries delivered on Friday to SSR instead of Saturday at BWV and I also cancelled the alcohol I ordered in the special comments, because I had a bad feeling about the whole order situation and no acknowledgement. We arrived at SSR and no groceries. I couldn't do anything about it because it was after midnight anyway and figured I would clear it up in the morning.
The next morning we transferred to BWV - well our groceries had been delivered there on Friday instead of SSR which I had completely specified. Our room was ready at check-in and so we went to the room and the bell man brought up the suitcases, owners locker and groceries. He mentioned that he double-checked the groceries against the list when they were delivered and none of the breakfast items were there and that he had mentioned it at the time to the delivery man.
I immediately call Garden Grocer and was practically accused of lying. Did you check your bags? Umm, yes. Are you sure they were all delivered? Yes, the bell men double-checked. Ok, well we will check with our delivery person and see where they are. At this point, I mentioned that I had asked for it to be delivered on Friday and he said well we did deliver on Friday to BWV. I decided against pointing out that it was the wrong resort. Well this is our breakfast food so now we will have to buy breakfast. No sorry - nothing but accusations and rude tone.
I got two more calls during the course of the day, asking about was I sure the food wasn't delivered. I was a bit frustrated at this point. NO - I don't have my orange juice, cream cheese, bagels, etc.
Finally at 4:00 p.m. they call and say that they are going to do me a favor and have the items that I am disputing delivered to the hotel. Again, no apology. I paid a $12.00 delivery charge plus the $15.00 tip that I had included for just $60.00 of food - I expected to be treated better than this.
Sorry folks, but the hassel wasn't worth my time. I received lousy customer service and will never use them again.

I would contact your credit card company and dispute the service charge and the tip since the merchant failed to deliver the services paid for. It's not a lot of money but it's the priciple. Plus, it makes the merchant have to go through the trouble of responding and they are hit with a chargeback fee (around $25 to $30) from their bank.

Everytime DW and I discuss having food delivered another thread like this comes along:headache:
seems like everything goes well until we get ready to use the service. Guess I'll skip it and just take a cab, or remortgage the house and buy from Disney..

I understand. We are having a big family trip in October and I was using this trip to try out Garden Grocer. Needless to say, I won't be using them again. I am a pretty forgiving person - I was okay with the wrong delivery date and location, but then to question what I received and to be using jerks about it - forget it!
I can say that we used Happy Limo and they offer a 15 minute grocery stop.

You know, I don't mind so much when people report an occasional snafu or 2 when dealing with a business. Things happen and nobody is perfect 100% of the time so I don't necessarily hold the occasional problem against an establishment. But I do judge a business on how they handle problems when they do arise and if I were in your situation, Garden Grocer would not get my business again. It doesn't sound like they handled this well at all.

That's exactly my feeling! Anyone can give good customer service when things are going along smoothly and everyone is happy, but it's very telling when customer service breaks down when there is some kind of an issue. I have yet to be totally satisfied with either wegoshop.com or gardengrocer.com. Both companies dropped the ball on one or two things in my orders. I don't order very much, in fact the last time I left a huge amount of stuff behind that was never even opened. From now on, I think I'll be packing the non-perishables and then just sucking it up and head to Screen Door for my dairy/bread.

Sorry to hear about your experience.
I just used gardengrocer for the first time last week and was very pleased. Even with having ordered a bit too much I still feel like it more than paid for itself (just for the water alone!)

Squiddy, my wife placed an order online last night for our trip in 3 weeks. Today she decided to remove an item and called the 800#. I guess she talked to the same rude woman you did. She told her in a snotty tone to email any changes then hung up. My wife was upset at the treatment.
We used them in March and they did pretty good except they told us they couldn't get diet gingerale. We thought that was odd, but overall we were satisfied, but I'm starting to NOT have a good feeling about them for our upcoming trip.

There is no excuse for such rude customer service. We used Garden Grocer last week and everything was perfect. I got a call while we were at MGM from the delivery guy who was dropping off our order at BCV and our room was not yet ready. He left the items with bell services and told me the amount I owed for the beer and wine. He didn't even want me to give him my c.c. number at the time, just wrote the amount I owed and highlighted the phone number on the receipt and told me to call the office when we got to our room. Worked out perfectly.

Sorry for your experience. We've used garden grocer twice now (3/06 and 10/06) with no problems, and we will use them again.
I know though, that it can be frustrating when this happens but did want to share that we've been totally pleased with gardengrocer.

We have used GG at least 5 times with absolutely no problems, no mistakes in order...and never late. I recommended them to 2 other families in the past and they both reported stellar experiences.

About a year ago, there were several threads that were very negative on Garden Grocer. Not only was the service very poor, but the rude attitude was worse. Some of the posters went so far as to post actual emails they received from the company with the same kind of attitude reported in this thread. Those emails were actually well beyond rude.
Finally -- at long last -- the owner of the company came on the DIS and apologized, said they'd been overwhelmed and had some problems, and asked folks to give them another chance. Then the service started improving radically and people started using them again.
Whatever the reason, there sure does seem to be a recurring theme here.

Sounds like they can't handle the busy seasons, was around this time last year that they were "overwhelmed". They might be better off telling customers they are booked for dates when they hit a level that might get overwhelming.

I did want to give somewhat of an update. I called and e-mailed Garden Grocer about my experience so that they would have an opportunity to address the problem. I didn't ask for or expect any kind of discount, I just wanted to give them a chance to answer to the problems. The customer service phone rep stated that she would not answer to my complaints that it should be e-mailed. I have no response from my e-mail, nor do I expect one.
If Garden Grocer had answered my first call about my items and fixed the problems immediately and apologized, I would have been happy and probably would have used them again. Their hesitation to fix my order, their accusations that I had actually received the items, their rudeness sealed their fate with me.

We've used Gardengrocer 4 times now and never had any problems with them whatsoever......and we had several changes to our order as well. All 4 times were 100% accurate orders and ontime delivery.
Sounds like they can't handle the busy seasons, was around this time last year that they were "overwhelmed". They might be better off telling customers they are booked for dates when they hit a level that might get overwhelming.
Actually I believe it IS posted on their website that they're unable to accept any more orders to be delivered this week because they ARE so busy.....my guess is they're striving to be 100% cyber-communication ONLY especially during a very busy time for them. Maybe they don't have a good system in place for when people need to change their order and these changes overwhelmed them. Not sure why they'd hire a surly phone worker though. LOL
OP, sorry your experience was less than good.

I'm sorry that the OP's experience with GG was not good. I have used them 3 times myself with good results each time and plan on using them again in October. Between my experience and what I have seen posted here on the Dis, most of the experiences with GG have been very positive. I can only remember 2 really bad experiences. Considering that many are more willing to post about a bad experience, I think GG has a very good track record.

Sorry to hear about the problems the OP had with Garden Grocer. We had excellent service from them on our trip this past May. The order was delivered within the time window we selected and we received everything we had ordered. We were especially pleased with the quality of the fruit they selected for us. I have already placed my next order with them, so we'll see how it goes.

Actually their posted busy time was several days after I arrived and after the experience occurred. Irregardless of their business volume, there can be no excuse for questioning the customer by phone so many times, rude treatment and above when found to be at fault - to not apologize. They admitted they weren't busy when this occurred because I asked if perhaps the driver was so busy that he forgot to drop it off. Nope!

I don't believe the OP's actual point is that GG is incapable of delivering groceries without problems, but more so that when there are problems, GG is not real proficient at handling them. If one hasn't experienced problems with GG, there would be no reason (hopefully) to have any first hand knowledge of their seemingly less-than-stellar customer service and problem resolution skills.
Of course those who have had problems and were pleased with the resolution process could definitely provide some valuable input to this discussion.

The main other option is wegoshop www.wegoshop.com It is a very similar company.
I haven't used either, but from what I've read here, both of these companies have many satisfied customers. Both companies have also had some bumpy spots in the road, but I think I've seen a difference between them.
If I recall correctly, Wegoshop had some problems during a change of ownership. They had some pretty unhappy customers, but it was for a short period of time, and I don't think I have ever heard any complaints about rudeness or disrespectful treatment of their customers. And since that one short period, I have not heard any complaints about Wegoshop.
GG seems to have occasional recurring problems. We occasionally get delivery issue complaints, and probably nobody is surprised by the attitude issues that prompted this thread.
Any business can fall short of customer expectations once in a while -- "Pobody's Nerfect." But the attitude problem at GG keeps coming up.
In answer to someone's question about why a company would put up with such rudeness to its customers, my experience with those kinds of problems with small businesses is that you are usually getting the attitude from the owner.

As others have said on this thread, miscommuntications and mistakes are forgivable and can be understandable, rudeness is neither.

At Christmas we used Marge from wegoshop and she was great. Our groceries and a christmas tree were delivered iwthin one hour of us arriving at OKW and everything was correct, even down to a pre-lit Christmas Tree. She had shopped around and got us an amazing deal.
On Christmas Eve Marge delivered more groceries along with a huge turkey.
Cannot praise her enough.

Another explaination you might consider. In January we had arrived early and checked our backpacks at the concierge desk. When we went to reload them at the end of our stay we noticed our DVD case was missing. Only 20 store bought DVDS, 17 of which were Disney Favorites (Cars, Mary Poppins, etc...). I was the one who put the case in the back pack when we got off the plane. I'm almost sure everything was zipped in. So myself and the concierge crew were the only ones who "touched" the bags supposedly. I called the airline and they said they found no such case on the plane. Doesn't mean someone else couldn't have walked off the plane with it though. I'm sure crime does happen at WDW. Even if it is just a hungry criminal. We'll never know for sure. I'll be taking my valuables to a locker from now on. And I think we'll be sure to be there when the GG guy arrives. I guess the old adage- If you want it done right, do it yourself- still stands true.

We used GG on our last trip. A couple of weeks prior to our arrival we wanted to add a couple of items. I called them and got the same short tongued girl who informed me that they only accept emails. I emailed our additions. Never received a reply.
Upon our arrival at the resort our food was delivered. After the delivery man left we noticed that some items were incorrect and some missing. I called and got the same girl. Same story, email us. I explained that our order had just been delivered and we had some problems. Same response, email us. I went on and told her that we didn't have email access. She got very upset and acted put out. She took my information and said that someone would get back to us.
The next day I called again and this time the owner answered. I explained our situation. At first he acted like he didn't believe me, but after I explained why the order was wrong he agreed to make it right. I packed up the incorrect items and took them the the Bell Desk, this was on a Friday. I called a couple of times over the week end and left messages on on their voice mail. Still no call back on Monday so I called the Bell Desk and they confirmed that the delivery man had just left our order.
Well four days later and our order is now correct. For our next 2 trips we have rented a car. We will be shopping for our own groceries and eating off property at some DIS recommended restaurants.

When I'm really unhappy with a business, and get nowhere talking with them I file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org). They handle it from there. At the very least, it will be on the record for others to see. This is a big deal for most companies, who want clean records and you might get a refund.

While talking to the girl, I got the impression that she has difficulty processing information. Her boss probably wants everything in writing, trying to avoid mistakes, thus the demand for email. Sometimes rude people are rude as a defense mechanism. She really shouldn't be used in a customer contact position.
On another note, their prices on all of their products were marked up above retail. Some items still had the original store price tag on them. By the time we paid for the delivery, the tip, and the mark up, it is cheaper to rent a car for a day. :thumbsup2

That's too bad you sensed the girl struggling......and that could explain the "rudeness" right there. She very well may not have been rude but confused and needing to sound firm on the phone in her request that people email her.
As far as their products being marked higher than retail, we thought the prices were fine and didn't care if something cost less at the retail level because GG is after all a business....their profit isn't based on delivery charges alone.

GG wants people to email them but here's what it says on our order confirmation: If there are any discrepancies or if you have any questions, please call us (toll free) at (866) 855 - 4350 and reference your invoice number.
But when you call they get snotty and tell you to send an email.:confused3

We have not used GG but we have used WeGoShop with both the old owner and now Marge. I just found the order process a bit easier on WeGoShop. In 2005 the store we asked Marge to shop didn't have enough Diet Coke (DH won't substitute) and she made an addt'l stop without being asked and no extra charge. Last June our flight down was delayed and again no problem, called her and adjusted the delivery time for later that day. Used her this June too, not a problem. She goes through the entire order as she unloads it and gives you the receipt from the store so I don't think there is any mark-up other than the delivery charge. Which by the way if you are in need of another delivery on the same trip she discounts the delivery charge.

Sorry to say that we used Garden Grocer this past trip and had a bad experience too. I had used them once before and all went very well. I think it's just luck of the draw. This time they left a bunch of things out of our order. It took many phone conversations and it ended up they brought the rest of our order, but it was the next day and they never compensated us for the problem. Also, I had to follow up, they didn't call me and apologize. Just not good business. So, I think we'll try We Go Shop next time.

So you do not have to be there when they deliver even if you bought alcohol? I am heading down in 2 weeks and my Dad and brother ordered some beer and we thought we would have to wait on them to deliver!
You don't need to be there, they had me fax a copy of my drivers license down to them and they left the beer and wine with bell services.

Thanks for all the info.
We were planning to use Garden Grocer when we come to WDW in a week and a half. Now, I will have to do a little more research.

My 2 cents.
We have done a couple of things.
Rented a car and bought out own groceries,. This took a little time and bout 30 bucks or so for a rental car. Got what we wanted.
Used We Go Shop. Real nice lady. Very Helpful, 99% accurate on what we orders name brand wise, and about 99.9% accurate on what we ordered item wise. Delivery charge and tip added up though. I would recommend them to anyone who wants to go this route.
Had DVC deliver the groceries from DVC Store,. Limited selection, high prices, but they delivered and stocked the items in our room. Costly but very nice.
Netgrocer. Ordered non-perishable items. worked ok but had to wait for mail.
I remember when the owner of Garden Grocer came on the dis and posted his comments about what was going on. IMHO, their was an arrogance in his posting and it seemed like "yeah we got too busy, sorry, not going to say anymore about it".
I would never use them after reading his repsonse and well as other horror stories.
Companies do make mistakes but how they handle the errors is what separates them from the good ones IMHO.
I am glad too hear that there are success stories with this company and maybe they will get better, it is just not worth the risk of using them IMHO.

Everybody makes mistakes, but not everyone responds the way this company does. And unfortunately, they seem to respond that way pretty consistently over time. It's not like this is the first thread of this type.

I read the old thread, and I'm one of the people who did have problems in August '06. Somewhere out there is another thread, because we were reimbursed our delivery fee and I did acknowledge that in another thread. Our next all family vacation is in a month an a half, and I'm renting a small car for the week, just for our own grocery needs, and just to have for small errands.

Well I have spoken to Marge at We Go Shop twice today. The on line order website isn't working right. I sent her my order through the e-mail. I had an e-mail response within minutes and a phone call tonight. Everything was handled very professionally. My groceries will be at AKV when I arrive. I have a late flight so she will deliver them early for me. I don't like any company that will only communicate through e-mail. Sometimes you just need a person to take care of things.

We used GG for the first time in May of this year...based on the reports on these boards (as Jim said, there has been mostly good posts for the past year). We had a not-great experience. Items missing, VERY late delivery, etc.
I decided to give them a second chance for our August trip last week. (This is unlike me...if my first experience is bad, I usually won't be a repeat customer.) Again though, it seemed like everyone else was raving. So I gave them another shot.
Everything for this trip went off without a hitch. Grocs. were there waiting for us upon arrival and the order was perfect.
HOWEVER, I called 2 days before because I wanted to make sure that things were going to be ok this time around...and I had ordered alcohol in the comments section. The person that I spoke with (neither rude nor friendly--just businesslike) informed me that when there is an alcohol purchase, you have to pay separately. She said that someone from GG contacts customers when there is an alcohol order in order to get credit card info. and take care of the payment, etc. Well, no one had called or e-mailed me. So I gave her my credit card info. over the phone then and there. Had I not made that confirmation phone call, I am quite sure that we would have had a "dry" stay.

At least, that was our experience with our grocery order this past May. We listed some wine in the Comments section, along with a few other items that were not listed on their website. Our order was delivered to Bell Services and the delivery person left a message on DH's cell phone to please call back to pay for the additional items. That was one of the things I especially liked about their service -- we didn't have to hang around the resort waiting for the delivery. They were willing to leave the entire order with Bell Services and trust us to settle up later for the additional money we owed them. Very convenient.
That's why I'm so dismayed to hear these negative reports. Things went very smoothly for us with our first (and so far only) experience with GG. I was looking forward to using their service for future trips. I placed our order for our next trip quite some time ago so I'm going to see how it goes.

I agree with the part about leaving the items with bell services. What we did this time was to schedule the delivery for 3-4 hours before we were actually arriving. That way I felt confident that everything would be there upon our arrival. It worked out well (other than it took OKW staff a bit to find our order...but he was Earning his Ears).

We had a big problem w/ GG ourselves a year and 1/2 ago. We went w/ them due to the fact that they could deliver to BWV between 4 & 5PM on date of arrival (we had 2 diabetics in our party of 6) I called when groceries were not delivered by 5:30PM and told he was on his way, called again at 6:30pm ....well you know the drill, by 8PM it was "i'm in traffic 10 mins away" etc. needless to say we got some food on the boardwalk sent most of the party to MK (It was EMH) and me & Mom (the two diabetics who by then had eaten) waited for GG until 10PM!!! I was livid. I confronted him and the story then completely changed. I will never use them again. He did finally admit a couple of "quick" orders came in that he delivered prior to us (seemed like alot more than a couple)

We used GG last week for the first time and had no problems at all. They actually called me to say they were running ahead of schedule and dropped off the order at OKW while we were still waiting for DME to take us from the airport to OKW. I would use the service again.

We used Garden Grocer on our recent trip to WDW...staying at The Beach Club Villas from 9/15 through 9/23/2007...by the way, where we want to stay from now on...AWESOME!!!
Garden Grocer made the delivery at the time we had set up in advance, and delivered EVERTHING we had ordered. We will definitely use them again!

I have to say the negative posts made me nervous, but we decided to try out Garden Grocer for our trip the end of Oct. So far so good.. I had a question about an infant formula that wasn't listed and I emailed them. They responded via email just about an hour later that they could get it and just to put it in the comments section with qty's and such.
After I placed my order I got a confirmation email.
Now the delivery is the thing ;) I'll be sure to post our experience when we come back.
Oh and this formula order is just a backup (i'll be packing most of it)..wouldn't want to leave that to chance.
They did have certain block out dates on their website for days they were completely booked..so maybe it is a "can't meet demand" sort of thing. Doesn't explain the rudeness though.

I just placed an order yesterday and got my confirmation email. All went without any glitches. I did put a bottle of wine and a case of Mike's in the comment section. When should I receive a call about the booze?

We just used GG for our trip on Sept 19th. I was getting pretty nervous when I saw the negative posts that popped up on these boards AFTER I had placed my order, but our experience was a positive one--all went well and groceries were delivered to bell services before we even arrived.
But I did not purchase any alcohol and did not try to add anything to the order after I had placed it, so ours was very plain jane.
Any place can have growing pains and problems, but rude responses are not acceptable IMHO. Then again, what is rude to one person may not seem so to another and communicating via email is the worst (but via phone isn't far behind)...in email all you get are the words...no tone/inflection/body language to help interpret their meaning.

When should I receive a call about the booze?Based on my own experience, they will not call you. They will bring the items in the comments section along with the rest of your order and ask you to pay the balance on delivery. In our case, they left everything with Bell Services along with a note about the cost of the additional items. We called them and settled up over the phone.
ETA: They do call you when they deliver the items, but not at the time you place your order. If you have a question about the items in the comments section of your order, it would be best to contact them now via email. They probably do not even look at your order until a day or two before they need to deliver it.

I was not there when they delivered my groceries. I received a call the next day on my cell and authorized a cc payment for the beer.

Sounds like hit or miss with GG. The last time I used them, for a trip, they were late on their delivery by 3 or 4 hours. Everything was right, except for one thing, which wasn't a big deal. The delivery person told me about it and asked me if it was OK. I thought the transaction went fine, all things considered. I'm not sure if I would take the risk a second time though. It's supposed to be vacation, and the last thing anyone needs is to add a level of stress.
For those that have done it, how much is a taxi to a market. Do we tell them to wait for us and any suggested markets? I read in another post that Publix was good and the Hess stations weren't bad either.

We took a taxi one time from OKW to Goodings and I believe it was $10 each way. I prefer going the extra mile down the road to Winn Dixie. Plus, there is a package liquor store in the front of their shopping center. I won't expect to get a phone call to settle up on the booze. Will wait and see when my order is delivered.

GG called me up the night before we left for our vacation to pay for a bottle of liquor that I ordered. They said that they make one run to the liquor store each day towards the end of the day for the next days deliveries. I was satisfied with their service.
