Tinks Tiki Fest Tour – Day 1 The Journey 24th July

Tuesday 24th July
Warning - DH has a new camera and I now feature in quite a few of the photo’s in these trip reports - those of a nervous disposition should look away now.
I couldn’t sleep much last night and woke at 1:45am and that was it. I gave up and got up at about 3am. I checked online to make sure our in bound flight was on time, it was showing an hour late but was still due to depart on time. I also had a quick Dibb and sent a couple of PM’s.
I made tea and got DH up at half 3, he had some breakfast and we woke DD at 3:45, although she was tired she was up and raring to go. Once she was dressed and had some tea it was DS’s turn. He was shattered and much harder to wake, he was out of sorts and already anxious about the flight so once he was dressed just went and sat in the car.
We set off just after 4am and had a straightforward drive to Shannon. I dozed for about 20 minutes and we arrived just before 6am. As soon as we got out of the car DS got sick and was getting very stressed.
We quickly checked in and went to get something to eat and looked out over a quiet check in area.

DS was getting more and more agitated and started to cry. In the end I gave him half of a very low dose chill pill the Dr had given me for emergencies. It started to work within 20 minutes and he was calmer by the time we went through security.
The kids played with their Nintendo’s and DH and I used the free wireless internet access. Immigration opened at 7:30am and we went straight through. We had a really nice immigration officer who let DD and DS stamp their own passports, which made them feel very important.
We sat and watched the plane come in and got a nice wave from the pilot.

We were watching the cases coming off the plane and loads of them fell off the conveyor belt and landed on the floor. One guy even threw a case onto the trolley, missed and it flew over the top and landed on the floor on the other side no wonder our cases get so wrecked every trip. We didn’t have to wait too long to get on the flight.
We went through another security check and boarded the plane about 8:45am and took off at 9:15am. The flight time was 6 hours 45 minutes and it was a fairly uneventful flight. As they had taken phenegrin both DS and DD were not sick at all on the flight which was great for them (and me). DS ate nothing for the entire flight but DD had some Pringles. The kids and I were sitting in a row of 3 with DH across the isle from us. His seat companions were two very large people and it was obvious that the two of them plus DH were never going to fit in the seats. As it was, when the woman sat next to DH she had to lift both arm rests to try and fit in. The cabin crew moved the husband a few rows back and left the wife on the inside but it was a nightmare any time she wanted to go to the loo as she struggled to get in and out.
DD nodded off in my arms and for the first time ever on a plane I had a snooze - I woke to the sounds of DH taking a photo of two sleeping beauties. I’m already cursing him getting his own camera.

DS started to get a little bit agitated but he had a bit of a sleep on me and felt better when he woke with only 2 hours to go. The cabin crew brought round a snack and within no time we landed with a great view of the Empire State building and the Statue of Liberty.
We landed a few minutes late but collected our bags then did customs and security fairly quickly. We were all starving so DH and DD had a pizza, DS had pasta and I had chicken Teriyaki.

We didn’t have long to wait and it was another uneventful flight of 2 hours 18 minutes. We landed a 4pm and DH and I had a Starbucks before going on the monorail and straight to collect the car. There was no one at the Alamo desk and we asked if any of the 4x4’s had a DVD player. They didn’t but they offered us a top of the range Buick for $30 a night. We laughed and said no thanks. They then dropped it to $15 and we decided to go for it. Once the paperwork was done DD and I waited while the boys went back for the cases. By now the Alamo line was quite long so it paid to go to collect the car before the bags.
When the boys got back we went to get the car but when we saw it we decided it just wasn’t worth the price they charged – I was expecting something from pimp my ride. We went back to the office in the garage and said we didn’t want the car and we’d just take the one we’d booked. They dropped the price again but we really didn’t think this car was worth it so we just took what we booked. They directed us to a row, which only had Toyota Highlanders in it so that was all had to choose from.
We left the garage just after 5pm and started the drive to Vero. Steve noticed that there was a warning light, which had something to do with the tyres so we’ll get that checked out when we are back in Orlando. The drive was about 1 hour 20 minutes up the I-95 and there was a lot of rain. We arrived at the Wal-Mart in Sebastian and got a McD and some groceries. By this time were all shattered. Check in at Vero was easy enough and we soon got to our room, which had an ocean view. We were all tired and went to bed at 9pm. Sometime during the night I realised that the toilet wouldn’t flush :scared1: .
