Good golly! I hope they fumigate the ships before the next sailings. If not, people are going to keep passing these viruses from one another, then back to everyone's home town. Yuck:confused:

Where in the world did you hear THIS, briane? Is it true -- or maybe just a rumor.
I understand how a flu outbreak could spread through a ship, but something like this is scary.

I have it so I know it is true. This thing speads like wildfire from kid to kid to it may get to many of the children on the boat according to my doctor. It is not serious. I had a fever of 102.6 and a nasty soar throat. The red dots on my fingers are a bit embarassing but not too painful.

Okay, so that is ONE person with this -- do you know of anyone else? One person is hardly an outbreak. So sorry for your discomfort - hope it is contained though.

It's also known as Coxsackie virus. Very common in children. Spread in pools especially. My children get it at least twice a year. It's viral along the lines of canker sores. I've gotten it from them and it's very painful. More painful for adults I think.

Nasty sore throat. It's very common anywhere this time of year.

my godkids get it a few times a summer from camp and being in the pool, that is exactly how it is spread!

Every kid I know (mine included) gets coxsackie virus at some point in time.
Ships are like ANY confined atmosphere this time of year. If there are sick people onboard they will most likely get other people sick. The same is true if you fly on an airplane, go to a movie theatre, go to a mall, etc.
There is nothing ON the ship that is causing people to get sick other than other sick people. :) If there were, there would be health officials all over the place trying to find a cause.
I know how miserable it is to be ill when on vacation, and I do sympathize, but I also do not want to lead people to believe through the various illness posts that disease runs rampant on the Disney ships.

Geez, I'd never even heard of this before. I never got it and I've never heard of anyone I know getting it and we went swimming all the time. Learn something new every day I guess.
Anyway, hope you feel better Briane and hope not too many more people get sick. :(

I received an email from someone who visits the boards but is not registered and who suspected that the illness (I think on the Magic) could be related to the Norwalk virus. Here is the link to an AOL search for related sites for more info.:

I sure hope there are no bad bugs aft on the Wonder, as we are sailing on Thurs. and will be in my all-time favorite aft stateroom, 5650.

I was on the January 27th sailing of the Wonder and am perfectly healthy...... my family (who stayed home mind you) are all sick! Tis the season you know!

I think some people associated hand, foot, mouth disease with MAD COW DISEASE (than ran rampant through Europe last year).....not the same at all.
With coxasacki (sp) you get blisters on your palms, soles of your feet and canker sores in your mouth, plus run a fever/chills. As another poster said it is a virus.

I am so sorry you do not like people statiing negative things about thedisney cruise but now you are totaling out of line if people are getting sick on board future crusiers have a right to know. And michelle I have and 11yr old daughter she has never had coxsackie. Please I know this is a business but as parent and a good person please reevaluate your
comments. if people are getting sick on the ship "EVERONE HAS a RIGH TO
KNOW" whether you or I like or not.
P.S. Disney may not be aware of the problem and by we the cruisers
informing maybe they can fix the situation, to smother it is not the answer.

Hi pavlarusso -- as I told you in my e-mail to you, I am most certainly NOT telling folks not to say anything negative about Disney Cruise Line. We have negative posts all the time and folks are certainly free to express an opinion.
I merely stated that I did not want posters to be unduly alarmed by the posts they read about illness on the ship. If there was something confirmed by Disney that an outbreak of an illness was related to something ON the ship (other than other sick guests) I can assure you we would most definitely report it on the board. We have done so in the past. And folks are certainly free to post if they get sick on the ship; we have not removed anyone's posts about illness.
I am very sorry your child got sick while onboard, I know that coxsackie is miserable for everyone. I hope you did report the illness to the medical staff while you were onboard; I have been to the medical center and they definitely track any illnesses reported to see if there are patterns or an outbreak occurring.
Best of luck to you on future cruises. :)

Maybe somebody needs to change the title of the thread here. It sounds so alarmist. Like Webmaster Michelle said, there is nothing on the ship that is making people sick except other sick people. When I lived up north, viruses, whether they were flu or others, spread very quickly, especially among kids, and especially in the winter. In Florida it's not as bad because kids are outside more in the winter. The ship is no different than any other enclosed environment in this regard.
Thanks, Michelle, for setting people straight.
Again, I think the thread should be renamed to cut down on the "yelling fire in a crowded building effect."

The original poster just as likely picked this virus up at home before her trip or on the plane (if she took one). I was on that cruise and if I get H,F & M....... you will all be the first to know!

Oh my -- there has only been one case of this brought to the boards attention -- hardly an outbreak. This is exactly how unfound rumors get started.

pavlarusso.....after reading your post I reread webmaster Michelle's to see if I missed something......she was not out of line with any of her comments! She was actually right on the money!
She gave a perfectly acceptable response to ease fears that the ships were "contaminated" in some way.
There are plenty of posts here on the DIS with negative comments about Disney. Yes, most people do love Disney and post positive things....but these boards are all about being honest with what is right with something as well as what is wrong with something.
I do agree with the poster that the name of the thread should be changed!
Just my 2 cents!

I too agree with Michelle.
One of the things I love about DIS is that posts are not censored, so you get the negative along with the positive. But that also has to be tempered with common sense. We're leaving on our Disney cruise tomorrow, and I'll be bringing my "winter blend" herbal pills, but I'm definitely not worried. I know that when you have that many people together, and especially kids, there is bound to be some passing of illness around, but it's the same risk as flying on an airplane. I think Michelle just didn't want people to get alarmed unnecessarily. I spend a lot of time on these boards, and I can vouch for the fact that you can find the bad along with the good...that's why it's such a great resource.

All the more reason for me to bring the mini-bottles of liquid soap. Little boys never like to wash their hands and so many adults and children don't do the same. DS7 had this when he was a baby. What a horrible virus! We didn't know anyone who was sick - we think DS contracted this from the shopping carts. So, you could have contracted it anywhere. Sorry to hear you had such a terrible attack of it. Get well soon.
