Does anyone know of any decent hotels in the fort lauderdale area?We will be staying there april 08. One of our party doesnt like heights so we need to find a hotel that isnt too high rise.
Many thanks for any info

The Pelican Bay Beach resort is very nice, the nicest I have stayed at in Fort Lauderdale.
It can be expensive though at peak times of the year and is sort of high-rise but not too big I think.
DH and i stayed a couple of years ago at the Riverside Hotel. We were in the newer tower part and it was a large room and very comfy. Didn't get to try the pool, but the hotel was in a good location, close to restaurants and boutique shops.

Thanks for the info folks. We are most likely going to stay in fort lauderdale but have looked at staying around miami too. We will be driving from orlando a couple of days before coming back home. we did look at hotels in miami but a couple of posts have put us off. One of them said that miami was a bit scary with what looked like drug dealers on every corner. Don't really want to take the kids into this sort of place.
Thanks for the info

Hi Doris,
Miami Beach area is fine and in my opinion as safe as anywhere.
The beach area is a city in itself and totally seperate from the main Miami area.
However, I do think Fort Lauderdale is a better option for somewhere to stay and maybe visit Miami whilst you are there.
There are problems with many hotels on the coast though, as I said earlier they can be quite expensive and in addition parking is often at a premium too and it can cost up to $20 a day just to park at the hotel.
You will get many mixed reviews on there but maybe try Tripadvisor - www.tripadvisor.com - for comments of guests who have stayed at the hotels.
In addition, whilst it is not as nice as the Pelican there are 2 Sheraton hotels that are right on Fort Lauderdale beach, the 'Trader' and 'Clipper'...we have stayed at the Trader and found it be a good hotel so maybe you can check that out?

Thanks for all of your info. I was wondering if they have rooms on the second (our first) floor. The floor with the canopies, are they guest rooms? If so then i might be able to get one of those.
Many thanks

You mean at the Pelican Doris ? I think they do yes, we were higher up 7th or 8th I think but it still wasn't that high really.
