View Full Version : Just back from our first DVC trip and all I can say is... WOW!!! (Long)

Ever since DW and I signed up last June to join DVC, we've both been incredibly excited about it, brimming with expectations. I was actually worried that our expectations for DVC might have become over-inflated in the 7 months since joining, and that we might be headed for a letdown. Such was not the case, however, as our exceedingly high expectations were not only met but surpassed.

Although our home is WLV, we booked our first trip to Boardwalk - we were taking 3 grandparents to DS's first trip to WDW (He's 19 months) and we figured that Boardwalk would provide the greatest ease in getting around to the parks. Since it wasn't our home, and I didn't even get the ressie in at the 7 month window (I think I booked at around 6 mos), I was completely not expecting for any of our room requests to be met. Number one after non-smoking had been a Boardwalk view, then top floor, then near the elevators. Well, we got in around 1pm, and they told us right away that our room was ready. Very pleasant surprise, so I expected the next sentence to be that we hadn't gotten most of our requests. But it turns out we got a beautiful 2 bedroom Villa on the Boardwalk, directly over Big River Grille, and up on the 5th floor. So while I was expecting to get no boardwalk view but a short walk from the elevators, instead we got a *Fabulous* Boardwalk view several miles from the elevators. ;) As tradeoffs go, however, I'll take it. :) We had a fantastic view from our balcony, which was HUGE, and we could actually see quite a lot of Illuminations from our room.

As far as room size goes, I guess it's all about expectations. Now I've never seen any of the OKW Villas, and I don't plan on staying there for a few years, until we're good and used to the 'smaller' villas elsewhere. And I can see where if you'd gotten used to having all that space, that it might be difficult to stay in BWV or WLV, that they might seem cramped by comparison. But to US, who have never stayed in anything but hotel rooms, all I can say about the BWV 2 Bedroom is... WOW!!! Oh my gosh, it was FANTASTIC! We stayed in the Grand Floridian last June, and this villa just absolutely, positively BLEW AWAY our lagoon view Magic Kingdom view GF room. We had 6 adults and a 1.5yo, and it was plenty of space for all of us, and then some. Extremely comfortable. No noise from other rooms, only occasional Boardwalk noise. We could hear some of the fireworks, the horns the Friendship launches would blow, and some long ringing bell noise that I only associate with two things - the bell they ring when a carousel is about to start up, or the end of period bell from junior high school. I still have no idea what that sound was, and the noise was only occasional and not that loud. Not enough to disturb anyone's sleep.

I am happy to report that in the 5 days that we were there, every day on property and in the parks, we did not come across one 'bad attitude' cast member. (On our trip last June, we had actually come across a number of them) Everyone we came in contact with was extremely friendly and helpful, and often funny. In addition, although the crowds were light, I think that they were only January light - the parks were still crowded, especially in the afternoons. When we went to the parks in the mornings, we really didn't have any lines to contend with. Often the standby lines were 10 minutes, and getting a fastpass would have meant we would have to wait an hour to come back. The one thing we did get a fastpass for (and was glad that we did) was Test Track. The only big surprise for us of a ride being out of commision was Splash Mountain - I don't know how I missed that, but wasn't prepared for it not to be there. This is the kind of thing that would have had me extremely upset in the past, but now, with DVC, it's just "Oh well. We'll see that when we're back in October"... :D

We did decide to go hang out some at the Wilderness Lodge and Villas, since we had never seen either of them except from the outside, and since it's going to be our home for the next 40 years, and all of us were absolutely blown away. I had seen pictures, I had read quite a bit about the stunning design of the lodge, the attention to detail and the fantastic theming, but NOTHING can substitute for walking into that place, especially when you've never seen it before. Again... WOW!!! By the way, we had dinner at the Whispering Canyon cafe, and had an absolute blast! Our food was great and the antics of the waiters were SO much fun. We all had to get up and do an abbreviated version of the Hokey Pokey in honor of someone's birthday, and I rode the 'Pony Express' around the dining room with DS - he loved it. Needless to say, we can't wait to go back and stay in the WLV, we are VERY excited!

By the way, as I said, DS *is* only 1.5yo, but he LOVED... no, **LOVED** WDW - since he was so young, we couldn't really prepare him for anything, and he only knows a few of the characters, but Oh my gosh - he had a gigantic smile on his face for the entire week. His first character experience, which was with Chip and Dale on the Character Caravan, was great - he was a little bit tentative at first, but they got down on the floor with him and were very very patient and sweet. And from that point on, he LOVED seeing the characters. We got an absolutely adorable picture of him with Minnie, and great pix of Chip and Dale and Jessie.

We also took an Illuminations Cruise, which I would *highly* recommend. There was some acrid smoke that came through as a cloud from the fireworks on the water, but it passed through pretty quickly. Other than that, a LOT of fun, and the best vantage point for Illuminations that I could imagine (and NO fighting crowds on the way out! ;) )

Our experience with transportation was uneven - we didn't have any troubles waiting for busses - none of them were longer than about 15 min wait, and most were more like 5, both to the parks and to DTD. Our biggest hassle with the transportation was when we had to go from one place to another where you have to change busses/monorails 2 to 3 times to get there. But considering the tradeoff of not having to drive, I'd have to say I was pretty satisfied with the transportation situation.

I'm sure that I'm forgetting tons of stuff - please let me know if you have any questions on anything particular. But I do have to say, we were VERY impressed with Boardwalk, and *VERY* impressed with our DVC experience... WOW!!! :D

Glad you had a great first trip home! Do try OKW sometime. It is beautiful, spacious and quiet. I would love to stay of VWL sometime for a short trip. They are beautiful also.

That's great, Jon! I'm glad you had a good time! The Boardwalk is a wonderful place-- I hope you didn't get spoiled. ;) Just kidding, WLV are wonderful too and I hope to stay there many times in the future.

I'm glad to hear your great report. Do you have any pics to share with us?

One of these days we'll have to meet for lunch or something-- we're in N. Raleigh.....

Oh, we DO plan on staying at OKW, definitely. I hope that no one misread what I meant when I said what I said. All I meant is that we really want to get used to the 'smaller' villas before staying in the HUGE villas at OKW. If we stay there now, then we will become dissatisfied with the 'smaller' ones, so I want to wait several years and a number of trips before we allow ourselves the luxury of all that space. :)

We don't have any pics up yet, we're still working on it.

Lunch (or probably, more realistically dinner) sounds like fun. We did actually go to the DIS meet at Houlihan's in Cary a few months ago. If you were there, we were the ones with the tiny little red head running all over the place... ;)

We booked our first DVC trip on points in September. We actually booked right at 11 mo out in hopes of getting a balcony on the boardwalk. Do you remember your room number? We booked a two bedroom for 1/2 the week to a 1 bedroom the second half of the week. Any suggestions on how to get a boardwalk balcony would be great!! Thanks

Glad you enjoyed your trip. (Hint on the bell ringing) it was probably the bell from the boardwalk water race game. You know where you fill the balloon with water and it breaks. We heard that sound all the time we had a room right over the River Grill and it was across from the games.

As you can tell from my screenname, my home resort is BWV and I have always beeen very happy there. We just finished a great 7-day cruise and go back to WDW in October - this time WLV and BWV with family and friends - we're trying the Grand Villa for the first time - can't wait! Thanks for making me smile about DVC - I remember feeling that way my first stay there, and it's important for all of us to not take it for granted - it IS a great experience!

We were in rooms 5015 and 5017 - the studio was 5015 and the 1 bedroom was 5017 - top floor, directly over Big River Grille. Excellent location. Have to run right now but will try to fill in more detail later on.

Glad to hear everything was great. You're one room disappointment was not getting the 2BR close to elevators. In fact, they did meet all of your requests that they possibly could. For future reference, be aware that there are no 2BR units overlooking the boardwalk that are close to the elevators. All the 2BR's with a boardwalk view are clustered over the Big River Grill and the DVC Sales Center.

Thanks for the great report, Jon! Glad your stay was "magical".

Sounds like you've been spoiled!

drusba , a quick question for you if you don't mind. We will be staying at the Boardwalk for the first time this June, in a 1-bedroom preferred view. So far, our only request has been non-smoking. Are there any other requests that you think would be worthwhile ? In addition, you mentioned the where the 2-bedroom units over the Boardwalk are clustered - where might the 1-br. preferred units be located ?

I understand that with the trip being only four months away that others with reservations placed before ours would have priority, and that this reduces the likelyhood of getting the "best" locations. But if you don't try, you usually won't succeed. ;)

Glad to hear you had a great trip! You will absolutely love VWL when you stay there....I kind of wish we had more points there. As spoiled as you get at BWV, VWL is all that plus a little bit more of a comfortable "home" feel...we loved it and can't wait to return.

Thanks for the info about the 2br's drusba....we have one reserved for next Dec. and hopefully will get that boardwalk view.

ScottOKW2K, the 2BR's that overlook the boardwalk are also the 1BR's that do so as all 2BR's are lock-offs (studio and 1BR separated by internal doors). There may be some dedicated 1BR's (meaning those that have no studio attached) overlooking the boardwalk that are closer to the elevators (and the central courtyard as a result) but I believe those are all either studios or grand villas in that area. Elsewhere 1BR preferred views (and all other preferred view rooms) are located over the main (Luna) pool, the quiet pool, and those overlooking the canal that runs to MGM (and you can request any of those areas). The 1BR's are spread out throughout those areas. The boardwalk view is the best, not just for looking out over the BW and at YC/BC but also because they are the only preferred views that look at Epcot and thus from them you can stare at the big golf ball (Spaceship Earth) and see the upper fireworks portion of Illuminations. You can request boardwalk view but as it is less than 20% of all rooms you may not get it. All other preferred views face Swan/Dolphin and MGM. All those preferred views are nice with decent views except ground floor units tend to look out at foliage and there are particular rooms to avoid in the Luna Pool area that are clustered behind the Leaping Horse Libations. That carousel-shaped pool bar/food pavilion is fairly large and high and thus some rooms (not many) that sit behind it have most of their view blocked off. Thus, the issue becomes more of avoiding those particular rooms (I do not know the numbers) than anything else.

Thank you for the great report! My husband and I will be taking our then 2-year-old down to WDW for his first trip in August. This will be our first trip to our home resort, BWV and we were able to also add on a few nights at the VWL at the 7 month window. I was thrilled to read your glowing report and I can't wait to go "home" 194 days and counting!!!

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I really couldn't call it a disappointment not being near the elevators, since everything else about the room was so great. They practically had the room sparkling, too: when we first came in, they had just shampooed all of the rugs. It was a very long walk to the elevators, but that didn't really bother us. Though if the walk is that long at VWL, I'll be sure to request an 'elevator view' room next trip...

Okay. now I am sooooooo pumped to go in 23 days! Like you, we bought in June and will be going "home" for the 1st time. We also have a 1 1/2 yr old (and a 3 1/2 yr old and one on the way....) so your trip report has gotten me really READY TO GO!! I am glad you had a greattime! :) When will you be back?

We will be back in late October, hopefully for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party. DS (19 months) *loved* Halloween last year, so we're hoping that this will be a big hit. By the way, in Epcot, if you walk straight up the middle from Future World towards the International Section, just before a bridge comes up, there is one of those 'walk though' (or should I say 'run through') fountains on the ground on the right. There's not always water coming out of it if there's no one around, but it's made of soft, squishy colorful blocks. DS spent about 15 minutes *absolutely mesmerized* playing with the water which would first come out of one location, then, as he pursued it, move to a different location several feet away. I think he would have spent all day there if we had let him. :D

We saw the Luna Park Pool many, many times during our stay, but never saw another pool. Where is BWV's quiet pool? Also, I was very impressed with the community building. Are the facilities at OKW and VWL's community buildings roughly comparable, or are some better than others?

While I'm thinking of it, where did our Avatars go? (The tiny little picture that used to appear on the left side of the screen with our name) I checked my settings, and my Avatar is still there, and it is still listed to show my avatar with my posts, but not only don't I see *my* avatar, I don't see *anyone's*... Did I miss something?

I believe the BWV quiet pool is by the Community Hall.....which was completely blocked off because of the renovations going on while we were there. Even the windows in the halls in the part of the hotel were covered so we couldn't see it. I'm relatively sure the quiet pool is back there from what I could see from the holes in the coverings over the windows in the community hall.
