Oklahoma is celebrating it's centennial as a state this year, so I am guessing that is a reason they were chosen, because I will admit it does seem like an odd first state to focus on.....but then again this is coming from a New Yorker and you know how we are. :goodvibes

I think some people need a field trip to Tulsa. :rolleyes1 Aside from PGA golf (if that's your thing), there's an award winning zoo, a beautiful aquarium (has been featured on Shark Week on DC), Philbrook Museum of Art, more fine restaurants than you can shake a stick at, an arts district, a bohemian district, an air and space museum, a planetarium, not to mention an opera and a ballet company. The list really goes on and on.
As far as the merlot goes, there are about 45 licensed wineries in Oklahoma, all of whom are outraged that instead of Oklahoma wine being served at the Oklahoma exhibit at F&*WINE*F, they will be serving California wine MADE by a native to Oklahoma. The reason for this is that the policy makers decided that the Oklahoma wineries did not have enough time to meet production, but many are saying it's all about money and they were never given the chance.

I sincerely apologize to those that I may have offended from the great state of Oklahoma with my sillyness...
BUT
when I think of Oklahoma (which has now been duly defended), food and wine are not in the top 10 things that spring to mind.
Last year, we had the pleasure of traveling with some fine folks from Oologah, Oklahoma who, whenever they were asked where they were from, smirkingly responded with "the geographic center of the Universe."
Please understand that we, as did they, were joking and meant no offense.
Does this get me out of the Tulsa feild trip?

Oh, yeah, here's another reason for that field trip:
With 200 man-made lakes, Oklahoma has more man-made lakes than any other state and boasts over one million surface-acres of water and 2,000 more miles (3,200 km) of shoreline than the Atlantic and Gulf coasts combined. Lake Eufaula is the largest lake in the state, covering 102,000 surface acres.
Zebco (fishing gear) is also headquartered in Tulsa (probably b/c of all that shoreline!). My dad also just told me that the PGA championship in Tulsa was for a record 4th time this year.
I can't wait to check out the Oklahoma Exhibit at the F&WF this year...I only hope they don't do something oopidstay...:scared:

^^Yeah, cause we can't see man-made lakes and pro golfers anywhere else. Oh!! A little state known as North Carolina. Lake Norman is man-made, and the Wachovia Championship, one of the largest non-major golf tournaments, is held at Quail Hollow golf club in Charlotte every May. And that's all within a half an hour!

Just a comment on why Oklahoma is at Epcot first. The news here is that the state has a very big budget to spend on celebrating the 100 year birthday.
I would guess that money is the main reason. I am sure Disney is making a good profit off of it. Oklahoma is pretty great place to live. Low crime rate and no gridlock, but that's not for everyone. It sure is a great place to raise a family. Walt would be proud that Oklahoma is coming to Disney!

If you want *good* barbecue, try Elmer's (31st & Harvard in Tulsa, or thereabouts). The WSJ had an article about the best barbecue in the country a couple weeks back, and one of the places in Tulsa got a mention, but I don't recall which one.

Okay, it's time for some clarification -
First, we were not speaking of the great state of Oklahoma - we would never disparage such a fine representation of all that is good and right with America.
No, we were speaking of OKLAHOMER - a state that exists in the mind of Bob Varley. It is inhabited by strange little mustached men in carts who have an aversion to the letter 'R'. Oklahomers primary exports are plastic black boots and Febreze (which is necessary to spray the boots after excessive wear in 98 degree heat). The state flower is the turd blossom (the strange little mustached men don their uni-boots and frollick about Oklahomers vast fields driving their carts and picking the flowers out of the dung heaps). These flowers are then sold to the states only market - 'Dianers Feed and Mercantile' - this is where Oklahomers residents can purchase their daily staples - like milk, bread, black boot polish, and of course, 'Breathe Right' strips (Oklahomers snore REALLY REALLY loud - and often cause Disney Cruise Line guests on either side of them to complain about the animal sounds coming from the next cabin). While there is much more we could tell you about Oklahomer, I trust that this will adequately correct any misconception or confusion of hate speech against the great state of Oklahoma.

Those places are located in OKLAHOMA !!!
Eskimo Joe's Tshirts are the 2nd most recognizable tshirts in the world next to Hard Rock Cafe. They have really good food, too !!! I know this because I eat there at least once a week.
I'm looking forward to stopping by OKLAHOMA's booth at the F&WF this year and was very excited when I found out it would be there.
The things that were said about Tulsa can be said about OKC, too. We are FROM Oklahoma and stationed here right now. My husband is in the Army so we have lived in SEVERAL states across the country and everyone always says that Oklahoma has the NICEST people you will ever meet.
So please don't put down the state or the people from here just because you're upset that Disney chose it for it's first and not yours. Because trust me, the people from Oklahoma wouldn't have been mad if it had been yours instead of ours.
Thank You, I will step down off the soap box for now..... I have an upcoming trip to finish plans for.
