View Full Version : Photo Assignment August '07: Animals

08-07-2007, 03:44 PM
Ok, back to the assignment. Lets see some new animal pictures. Any kind of animal except humans. May give yourself a tune up for Animal Kingdom and take the family or just yourself to your local zoo. Maybe you have some wild life right in your backyard. Or how about your pet/pets.

Once again, the purpose of the assignments is to get out there and use your camera. Take some new pictures maybe using a different composition or try new settings. If you've been using just the AUTO settings then maybe try venturing into the world of Shutter and Aperture Priority. Use these assignments to try something new and get to know your camera and how you use it better. Pay attention to what works and what doesn't work so that you can apply the lessons learned to your other pictures, especially those at Disney and more specifically in this assignment: Animal Kingdom.

Most important,,, HAVE FUN!

Also try and post your shooting data (aka EXIFdata) to give others the opportunity to learn some things as well. The most important info is: ISO, Shutter, f/stop, along with white balance and what mode you shoot in (aperture priority, shutter priority, portrait mode, sports mode, landscape mode, etc...)

I'll start it off with a transition photo:

This is Candy, my uncle's 15 year old dalmation playing in the water this past weekend.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e234/handicap18/Misc%20Photo%20Gallery/DSC_7317.jpg
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/500
Aperture: f/5.6
Auto White balance
aperture priority, center weight metering and I believe I had the circular polarizer filter on. Though I should have put myself in a different position because the sun was behind the dog and it would have come out better if the sun were behind me. Oh well.

I took this on Saturday. It was cropped down so it focused on the bee.

Let me see if I can get the exif stuff - LOL

I can't figure out how to cut and paste the exif info -

so I think that this is what's wanted -

ISO
Shutter 1/60
f/stop 3.5

I have no idea about the iso as I can't see it listed? Also can't tell the white balance or mode.....sorry!

those are excellent shots! love the squirrel! :) I'll have to go find the one of my dog in the flowers now. In the meantime, here is my favourite animal shot, the baby turtles from vero beach (fish/wildlife person holding them so it's ok :) ) maggie

Thanks! If you were to see my entire photo - you'd see mostly plant, very little bee. The picture is a large file, so that when I crop it down to the bee - it's still fairly large. I'm still learning - LOL! And I don't want to get THAT close!

Butterflies and bees are my current obsession - oh - and the hummingbird I spotted today in our yard - if I can catch that little sucker in a photo, I'll be doing good. I obsessed about lightning till I got a good one. LOL!

I've shared this photo on the other threads, and it violates the "go out and snap a picture in August" rule - but since you are talking about bees - I thought I'd post it. This is my favorite bee shot that I took the last week in July. I love the contrast. I've tried my hand at cropping it down so it's more bee than flower and it looks humungous - LOL! I do like the detail in the feet - it's like he has little toes or claws.

Sorry if you've seen this on the other thread.....

Jenn- What kind of dog is that? Very cute.:goodvibes
My girl used to be afraid of the camera too - now she jumps right in and poses. Of course it took until she was about 5 to get her to hold still for a split second. She's a Jack Russell Terrier though so it's the breed!:goofy:

The puppy is a mutt. His mommy looks like your doggie. I suspect she is mainly JRT, but as she is from the Humane Society we can't be 100% certain what she is. If I can convince her to stay still for the camera I will post on of her tomorrow.

Thanks woj68, nice capture of your dog, all it needs is a cape. BTW the hawk shot isn't from a zoo, it flew down in front of my car on a dirt road and when it flew back into the trees I drove down the road a bit and then got out to get some pics, it just hung around, I got lucky. Thanks again.

Great shots everyone! I shot this fella (Rainbow Lorikeet) in my back yard this morning. He was having a feast on the bottle brushes, which are the best I have seen for ages! Drought must agree with them!

Taken with my Canon S3, playing with various settings. Also on full zoom, I think, as the tree is quite tall. I have cropped it to centre him some more, but that is all.

I took the kids to the Zoo today and after the "Wings of Wonder" show I was able to get a shot of this guy - the Spectacled Owl" - I have to say, I never knew trying to get a photo of a bird could be so hard! He never stopped moving! He kept spinning his head around and around - which was very cool, if I wasn't trying to take his picture!!!

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f37/imscrappy2/IMG_4464.jpg

Shot with a Canon S2IS, ISO 50, program mode - used 1/60 and F4.0. Just realized the ISO was so low - may explain why I have the motion blur! Thought I had it on 200! Live and learn~

I hope butterflies count as animals, even though they're insects. Took this one yesterday; I can't figure out why the background came out black. There was a Christmas tree behind my butterfly bush; maybe because I did the "no-no" of shooting in bright sunlight?? Whatever the reason, I really liked the way it came out:

I had filled up my bird feeders this morning and since I was standing so still taking a zillion butterfly pictures, this little guy decided to come for an afternoon snack and he didn't notice me at first:

I went to the Franklin Park Zoo here in Boston for the first time over the weekend (to practice for the Animal Kingdom on Tuesday!). Anway, the goal was to take shots with a borrowed telephoto lens. I got a few good ones. Also, I was working on shooting through a fence and getting the focus and aperture right so the fence is barely noticeable. Unfortunately, I forgot to check my ISO settings (I wish the Rebel XT always showed you this!) so a lot of the shots are at an ISO that I think is too high (800). But what I did learn was that it worked anyway

I took these last week.

Great shots Jen! We have tons of dragonflies right now too - I tried to capture them with the kit lens, but wasn't very successful. I think that macro lens is definitely next on my list!

I know - and did ya see the legs! :sad2:

;) I have been pretty lucky with them - they actually find a limb or flower or something (my hand in the pool over the weekend) and stay there for quite a while. The biggest issue I had was that one was on a branch on our desert willow tree - which is behind the waterfall in a corner by the fence. VERY cramped quarters. No way I could have gotten a tripod in there. So I took about 1 gig worth of shots and ended up with - 22 I think that I was happy enough to process. Those are the best two.

First of all, I love the dragonflies too. Those should be in a science book in the chapter on insects.

Secondly, this is not my dog. My dog (a fearless yet fussy rottweiler) would look at the stick and tell me to get it myself.

I saw this guy last weekend playing fetch in Lake Erie.

is the tram up to the bears open now or do you still have to walk there? they had it shut due to the bridge demolition last time we were at the zoo and it was to much walking for me so i hoped they would reopen the tram soon.

They are not great, but they have the bird in focus which is a major accomplishment for me!!;) I was out trying to get a few shots of a sunflower that had just opened up when this little guy flew into view. He seemed quite content to be within a few feet of my head. I just had trouble keeping him in the view finder!:goodvibes I'm just bummed that I was at the angle I was - my lovely airconditioner unit sits in this flower bed. Now I have an argument to put up a fence with climbing roses around it!!!LOL "I have to have a backdrop for the hummingbirds!" No pp, these are straight from the camera. I'm hoping when I run them thru they'll clean up a bit. TFL!:)

Thank you!! I was able to blur the background by using a telephoto lens (300mm) and a large aperture or f-stop. BTW great work on the humming birds, they are very hard to catch!! It took me 9 years to get a good hummer shot! Nice work:thumbsup2

The tripod isn't the issue though it will help that you won't get tired holding camera. You need a fast shutter speed plus a decent aperture so that you are focused correctly.

Thank you for the compliments! And Sharon, thank you for the tips. I'm going to have to play around in the manual mode to see how fast I can get the shutter and then work on the aperture setting as well. I shot those in the Program mode, if I recall correctly. I'll check those settings and start there! I'm hoping that in the next 3 weeks I'll have lots of time to play and get to know my settings a bit more, before we head down south!!!:cool1: Thanks again everyone!

Thanks! We have a couple of them, I believe this is a ruby throated as well .. but it must be a female. The males will "dive bomb" each other when they stop for a drink ... I'm working on getting one "attacking" another, but the timing needs to be perfect. Far as I can tell, they don't really come in contact, the just "buzz" each other at very high speeds.

Nice job on the hummingbirds.

The tripod will help with holding the camera steady, but honestly you need a VERY FAST shutter speed. 1/8000th is probably best, though most entry level dSLR's only go up to 1/4000th and many PnS camera might not top 1/2500th (mine only goes to 1/1500th, but its an older one). Looks like the S2 can go as fast as 1/3200th which is pretty fast. But this only applies to getting the wings in a stop action. Getting their body steady is easier.

Keep it up. Always looking forward to more photos. :thumbsup2

I have a few shots from the Winnipeg Zoo to share from this weekend, but first, my hummingbird shots. We were at a BBQ, and just as the sun was setting there was activity in the person's garden. "Look, hummingbirds!" So I fire off a few shots with the flash. When I look at them the next day on the computer, here is what I captured (be gentle, these are heavily cropped to focus on the subject:
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f331/cpbjgc/August%20Zoo/Party0001.jpg

That has way too many legs for a hummingbird :lmao: . I think it is a moth, but if anyone thinks they can identify it, I am open to suggestions.

On to animals I can identify...
Grizzly eating playing bobbing for apples (they were floating over to him in the water)

Excellent job guys.

I have some shots from my jaunt to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston yesturday, but the USB connector on my External Hard Drive has bit the dust. I haven't decided if I want to go through and reconvert all the images from the SD card. I probably will, but haven't yet. I did get a few that I liked. Lighting was tough in some parts and a few of the animals weren't in the best of spots or were too lazy to even open an eye.

I should have some tomorrow.

I forgot to take my polarizing filter with me and I shot these in JPG so I need to go back to the zoo and try again. I think I'll wait until temperatures drop below 110 degrees though. The heat isn't so bad but it is monsoon season so the humidity is somewhere in the 50%-60% range.

Thanks for the nice comments on my hummingbird. Here's another animal from our trip to the Rocky Mountains, the North American Elk, or wapiti. A beautiful bull elk with the velvet still on his antlers. Rutting season is in September so in late August they start to lose the velvet coating. Once the velvet is gone, they have beautiful, shiny antlers which they will lose in the winter.
