I didn't take as many night shots as I would have liked on our last trip. I can't wait for the next trip. WS is awesome any time of day. Night is no exception.

Taken from the bridge area between France and The UK

Taken from same area a few hours later using a wider focal length:

World Showcase is great at night... if you can, bring along a tripod, too!

I haven't yet gotten far enough in re-post-processing my photos from these parts of my trip, so these are my earlier photos, they will hopefully look better before long. :) The brown tint in some of them really bothers me... I can't wait to fix 'em up!

awsome pictures everyone! Does everyone use a tripod?

I think a tripod is imperative if you want sharp shots below 1/30 of a second. With night, you can have exposure of that will tax anybodies ability to handhold. You can always use something (trashcans) but you need something besides "you" to hold the camera.

A few other shots

Yeah, a tripod really expands your options when it comes to night photography... this is true no matter what kind of camera you have. An inexpensive point-n-shoot on a travel tripod using the 2-second timer (to minimize camera shake) can turn out some great nighttime photos too. Ideally, your camera will have an aperture priority mode, you'll set it to somewhere in the middle (F8 or F11 or so), and let the camera set the shutter speed. If the resulting photo is too dark, use exposure compensation or just go into full manual mode and slow down the shutter to brighten it up.

Here's one I took on our last trip. Handheld, Canon 70-200mm IS f/2.8 L, 1600 ISO, f/2.8, 1/50 second:

I could not have squeezed a tripod in where we were standing and it would have been jostled by all the people around us. We were waiting for Illuminations. Next time, I think I would walk over on the other side and use my 20mm or my 50mm f/1.4.

Brown tint caused by sodium vapor lights. Set your white balance to tungsten or fluorescent to fix it.

Yeah, I've realized that since then and my redone night photos at WDW are much more pleasing, to my untrained eyes at least. :)

The first night of Epcot photography, I used my monopod... worked well in the crowds, and it helps that I'm fairly tall so I can see over most people. Since it's fairly heavy and bulky, I'd probably lean towards just using the tripod and if it's too crowded, leave it folded up and just extend one or maybe two legs, so that it's like a monopod and doesn't get in the way of other people. But when the crowds are heavy and jostling, you're right, you're pretty much stuck handholding!

When did you take those? Two minutes before they closed? No people, that's VERY unusual.

Thanks, I like to wait out the crowds after closing time to snap my pics. I have been in the world showcase an hour after closing time and no one seemed to care.
