Tonight, I was lucky enough to pick up quite a few deals at the Semi-Annual Sale. Adult T-Shirts were $2.99! All clearance was an additional 40% off, there were some nice deals to be had on summer Tiki themed merchandise.
But, the real news is what's about to happen in the coming months. According to the Store Manager, at the recent big sales meeting, the powers that be admitted that they made an error when they cut out the adult merchadise and that it's coming back, even in larger sizes! I am talking leather jackets and other nice apparel! They are also going to debut some nice things for the home, like some really beautiful canvas artwork. I was a bit spoiled tonight, because I was able to buy all 4 of the first releases tonight! I hope to post photos of them in the next day or so. It's almost bedtime, so I don't think that I can get them done tonight, but I will tell you that they are really nice. I got Snow White, Donald, Mickey, and Tinker Bell!
Ok, that's the scoop. Feel free to discuss. Maggie

What, no "All Pooh, All the Time?" I walked past a Disney store yesterday without going inside. Now I might have a reason to take another look.

If only they would bring back TDS to my local mall! Now the nearest store is a 3.5 hour drive away!:(

Too bad they "drove" off all the customers. Didn't anyone tell them it's easier to KEEP a customer then find a new one. (I am not likely to go out of my way ever again for one of these stores and there is not one in my mall so...lost opportunity for them)

Agree, they will need promotions to bring their adult customers back in. I think most gave up years ago... :sad2: :dance3:

At my store, we have plenty of adult shoppers, many who have been coming in for years. I know for a fact that despite the CMs passing the need for adult clothing on to upper management, it was heard upon with deaf ears. In the last year, things have taken a turn for the better with adult clothing. Although I haven't worked since my manager returned from the sales conference, I look forward to hearing about all of the new merchandise in store for us! :)

Are you talking TDS online or the actual stores in the malls? They are owned by two different entities so I was just curious (The Children's Place owns the physical stores which is why you no longer find the items in the stores online).

I swear to God I thought all of these stores closed...are you people saying they are still open and they still sell Disney stuff?? :confused3 :confused3
Is ABC still on the air too?? :confused3 :confused3

I'll believe this one when I see it - it's owned by a company called The Childrens Place after all.
I'd rather see WoD branch out to having one in the major cities first.

TDS is returning to their roots. TCP didn't purchase TDS in order to turn it into a kids store, it already was one. Disney took the adult apparel out of the store in the 2002 season, TCP didn't take over until late 2004. Adult lines have been test marketed for the last two years and are currently being launched in all stores over the next couple of months. The current studio line is fab.
Bear this in mind, they went away when people stopped buying them, so if you want the great adult stuff of years past buy it before it goes on clearance. If people only buy it when its clearance priced at less than half the original retail value it is not profitable and won't be kept around.
Also, as of July 10th, www.disneystore.com will be relaunched and affiliated with retail locations. Currently if you type in www.disneystore.com you are redirected to www.disneyshopping.com which is under seperate ownership. This redirect will no longer take place.

So there will be two different Disney shopping sites online? One for TDS (owned by TCP) and one for the official Disney shopping through Disney? I am really confused now :confused3

I'm really happy to see the adult line return to the Disney stores.
We just started getting some of the clothing in one of the local malls. And... I did some credit card damage.

I'll believe it when I see it... I spent one year working at TDS under Disney ownership, when it was aready becoming a glorified toy store, then one year under TCP, during which upper level management (regional and up) continued to drag the stores downhill and with promises of REMODELS! NEW INVENTORY! NEW UPDATED POS ELECTRONICS
They never happened, most probably never will. I think it is too little too late for this, not that I really believe it ever will happen. TCP sucked the joy (and that's all we had in leu of low pay for the above average work expected) out of working there.
It's hard to share the Magic when you aren't feeling it.

perdidobay, you sound just like me! I worked at TDS for three wonderful years before it was sold to Hoop Retail. I had the best management team and we had a great cast. We worked hard but all loved what we did so we still had lots of fun. Admittedly, I was working for perks because the pay was awful (I usually spent more than I made at the store)
When Hoop came on board, much of my staff went to work for Build-A-Bear across the mall. The new SM is a tyrant and a bully. She not only sucked the magic out of what we did, she sucked the very life out of me. I was the last one to stick it out in my store and finally, after sticking it out for 18 months, I couldn't take it anymore and left. The last straw was the night she screamed at me onstage for over an hour about not being a "team player".
Sadly, the standards in the store have gone into the toilet. No one does plush mountain any more. They just pile everything in there. The fixtures aren't dusted, the glass isn't cleaned. So, I have to agree. I don't think bringing back adult merchandise would be enough to bring me to step foot back into that store.

Very nice post!!!! That is excactly what I've been saying all along about the adult clothing.

At my store, plush mountain is at least touched and zoned once a night whenever I work. I'll admit that I'm not the best person to do plush mountain, but it is at least organized when I'm done with it. As far as the glass not being cleaned, every morning our windows are washed, inside and outside. Our standards (at least at my store) have not been lowered since the TCP sale. Actually, we vaccum every night now, instead of just once a week or so.
I'm excited to see the new things and what is going to come to the store next! :)

Unless things have changed since last fall, you get 30% of merchandise at The Disney Store and The Children's Place only. You have access to three one day park hoppers per year. They have to be ordered through the store at least 30 days in advance of your trip and can only be picked up at the ticket windows at the four major parks once you arrive.

Actually, though I am disappointed with the way TDS has changed since TCP took over(the store in our mall changed locations...from a very large magical place to a small tiny flourescent Hades with not near as much adult items, other than t-shirts), I have to say I was pleasantly surprised the last time we visited. We went a few weeks ago and I just happened to be griping(again) about how they needed more adult stuff, when lo and behold, one wall caught my eye. There were mens and womens items displayed along a front wall, with matching kids stuff right with it. There were also purses and other adult accessories. Dh wears bigger sizes and we found 2-3 hawaiian type shirts up to XX(I think that was the biggest). There were coordinating mens khaki cargo shorts, women's dresses and shorts, etc. I still hate the way the store looks, but I was a happy camper when we left(we didn't buy anything, but knowing it was there was awesome)!

I would be glad to have a Small Adult section. A bit more than a few t-shirts. I hardly wear t-Shirts. I have bought many of the mickey Polo's on-line.
Sure the Kids will have the Tigger's share of the merchandise, but my wife and I have the Job's and would appreciate a bit of stuff for us.

I'm sorry to say but I've also seen a change in TDS since TCP. I remember when the CM's will always greet you & walk up to you multiple times in case you needed help. I also remember the T.V monitors always working perfectly, the plush mountains maintained, & the store having an overall cleanliness to it. In my experience, this hasn't been so in years. All TDS I've visited have 1 or more monitors not working, are not well maintained, & the CM's act like you're not even there. I live in Naples, FL now but usually travel many times to FT. Myers & also to Miami where I grew up, so I'm speaking of these stores only. I hate seeing these stores decline the way they have been, specially when I remember how they use to be. I have some friends that we're CM's and they also agree. I moved from Miami to Naples because it's technically more peaceful & "cleaner" here, but our Disney Store is the worst one I've ever seen! You can hardly tell what's playing on the monitors anymore, the whole place need some TLC. We used to have a Disney Warehouse in the outlet malls of Estero (15 minutes from where I live) but they closed down. That was a great store which sold a lot of merchandise only found in the parks, I really miss it. If anyone knows of a Disney warehouse in South East or South West Florida, could you please post it. :goodvibes Anyway, It's nice that they're selling adult merchandise now, but I think it's going to take more than that to fix their image, just my opinion.

Under the new contract signed with Disney, TCP has to remodel a total of 234 existing Disney Stores into a new "Mickey" store prototype by the end of fiscal 2011. And if TCP breaches any of the provisions of the contract on three or more occasions, Disney can require TCP to make a payment of $18 million to Disney. So I think you'll be seeing big changes for the better not only in your local store, but across the entire chain as well. :thumbsup2

I just went to the new "Disney Store" website. Sure, it says Disney Store on the web page but if you look at the address line- it changes to disneyshopping.go.com. Isn't that the same web address as Disney Shopping? I only noticed the address change because some of the items looked identical to what the Disney Shopping website is offering. For example - the Studio Collection tees are on both websites. Also- I noticed that on the Disney Store website they claim that purchases made on that site CAN be returned to the Disney Stores and then I looked under Disney Shopping and it looks like they have the same policy now. There is even a "tab" on Disney Shopping website to go to the Disney Store website. Are they one in the same? What's really the difference? I'm confused!:confused3

I agree...it's confusing. disneystore.com doesn't have much to choose from yet. Hopefully, they'll be adding more. One jacket, one pair of jeans, and one skirt does not an adult section make. JMHO
home.disney.go.com/shopping still has a much better selection and, most importantly, the offer collectibles!

It looks like disneystore.com is basically a sub-store of disneyshopping.com. It has its own tab at the top of disneyshopping.com. So basically disneyshopping.com is now selling stuff designed and sold at the stores.
If you put something from each in your cart it is in the same cart, the disneystore.com stuff has their logo next to it.

www.disneystore.com had it's soft launch on July 10th. It is now associated with The Disney Stores which www.disneyshopping.com was not. For the time being they are kind of connected, but with time that should change. That is why you can now return merchandise bought online to The Disney Stores.

I'll believe it when I see it, but I REALLY hope they bring back the Disney Store of old, with the sericells, books, posters, and WDCC items (along with other housewares and collectibles) that made the store a destination for those of us above the age of 14.

The Disney Store is getting more adult huh? Can a strip club on Pleasure Island be far behind
Just stopped by the Disney Store in the Staten Island mall yesterday...
They have a couple of advertisements in the windows and a bulletin in front of the store about Disney's "adult collection," but the actual collection has much to be desired (so far). All they had were two tables and one very small section of a wall set up with a couple of t-shirts and shorts. Thought I saw a jacket as well but that's about it. Hopefully they'll expand further.

I REALLY hope they'll have REAL womens'-sized tops in there! Last year at the The World of Disney in DTD, I was hard pressed to find an Extra Large, and there were no 1Xs for women. However, in the men's department the shirts went up to 4X!

I hope the Disney Store reverts back to how it was before -- not just merchandise, but service as well. The last time I went in with my son the manager was standing next to the cashier pushing merchandise with a hard sell, which I thought was tacky. She was fairly insistent we buy a Disney picture frame, saying something to the effect of "it will cost three times this much at Disney! Buy a souvineer NOW and save!" I passed (each of the several times she mentioned it to us while checking out) which received a disappointed look from her each time. She pulled the same spiel on the lady infront of us, and I heard her doing it as we were leaving too. Tacky, IMHO. Didn't seem very "Disney" to me, but learning they aren't owned by Disney any longer would explain that I suppose.

Love your user name-DS (8) is a Star Wars nut and he too is a Padawan ;)
There is a Disney Character Warehouse in the Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise (a hop skip and jump down I-75). It used to be a nice big space but it was downsized a while ago; not nearly as fun or magical as it used to be!!!
BTW-we love Naples-what a beautiful place. It is our destination for when we "want to go take a ride."

Also, as of July 10th, www.disneystore.com will be relaunched and affiliated with retail locations. Currently if you type in www.disneystore.com you are redirected to www.disneyshopping.com which is under seperate ownership. This redirect will no longer take place. As part of the 2004 annual report, Andy Mooney (Chairman of Disney Consumer Products) made it clear that The Walt Disney Company was going to get out of direct retail. Disney decided instead to sell their products via the big retailers such as Wal-Mart. Part of the deal with TCP was that disneyshopping.com (Disney operated) would close shop and turn the entire online sales over to TCP. That is what is currently taking place.
Disney has no desire to continue in direct retail sales. Even the outlet stores are TCP. However, Disney still owns and operates Disney’s Character Warehouse in a few select areas. These stores sell WDW and DL old stock. They also own TDS in Times Square (managed under WDW operations).
Bottom line is that if you want Disney merchandise, you'll find the best selections at the big retail outlets such as Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

I work at TDS and have for the last 4 years. So I started when Disney still owned us. While it is nice to see more of an adult selection, I can't say it's really the stores fault for "driving away customers" and becoming more "toy oriented." The bottom line is that stores will focus on what actually sells. And it's the kids items, not the adults, that really drive the revenue. Adult selection started going down because people simply were not buying enough of it to be profitable. I heard guests saying every now and then about how they missed the adult stuff and would buy it all the time...the problem was, they were not buying so much of it for the entire company to keep making it and selling it. Disney didn't drive off the customers...the customers simply weren't buying what they had. So they instead began to focus on the kids hardline and softline items.
When Hoop Retail (TCP & TDS) decided to start marketing more adult items again, at first, we saw a splurge of people buying as it slowly started becoming more incorporated into the stores. However, once again it has slowed down. The stores have a bunch of new adult items and not much of it is selling in spite of it being on the floor for several weeks now. We are once again seeing the fact that people are only buying the adult merchandise once it gets marked down so low...and then they'll still wait until it's an additional percentage off the clearance price. People complained about the lack of adult merchandise and when TDS responds, people don't buy it until it's like only a couple of dollars. And then they wonder why the merchandise was going away to begin with. :confused3 And this isn't just happening in my store. I have seen and heard several times (from my managers) of where MANY stores across the country are complaining about this stuff not selling and to just please put it on sale so they can get rid of it.
The adult merchandise is GREAT to have in the store. But if customers want it to stay, they need to actually buy it, preferably before it gets marked so low that it makes it pointless for us. I mean sales are great...hey, I'm a bargain shopper myself! But we're still a business. So did the "powers that be" really make a mistake when they took the adult stuff away? I don't personally think so...and obviously Disney didn't either. And I think with the lack of huge sales on this adult line they've really been pushing, I think Hoop is realizing the same thing. Now I'm not saying that every single store is in the same position. There have been some stores that have had moderate or even good success with their adult lines. Unfortunately, this is not a chain wide "victory" story.
As far as how TCP has been since the changeover of companies...I can't say I'm all too happy. Now I'm not going to get into how people are greeted or how plush mountain is maintained...that's all on the cast members. But the behind the scenes stuff does get to me sometimes. As someone else pointed out...they promised us so much stuff (ranging from remodels to product we would carry), and hardly any of it was delivered. Disney was even upset when TCP breached their license agreement regarding remodeling (among other things...they eventually settled charges). I know our projector went out MONTHS ago and only within the last few weeks did we finally get a new one. We also have three tvs, only 1 works properly and in spite of many phone calls, the other two are not repaired. Our register system goes down on a frequent basis (and this happens chain wide as well). Some of the products have real quality issues and we sometimes look at things and say to each other "WHAT were they thinking when they decided to sell that?!" It's absolutely absurd. TWDC did a much better job running this chain.

I too miss the old disney store. It felt a bit more upscale and was better maintained.
When I was in a shop a couple of weeks back, the adult apparel just wasn't very appealing. I wish they'd start carrying things like the Disney Couture line. That line seems to be quite popular, even amongst people who aren't really Disney fanatics.
It would also be nice if they could carry more of a selection of DVDs and CDs. They play a great selection of Disney music in the shop, but they don't seem to sell any of it at the store near me. They still got a couple of small purchases out of me, but I would have spent more if the product mix was a little better.

The old Disney Store had a well deserved reputation for very inflated prices for their merchandise. It was common for items to sit on the shelves for several weeks with few buyers. Only after substantial markdowns did the items begin to sell in any quantity.
One of the many promises made by Hoop Retail was to reduce initial selling prices to avoid the markdown syndrome. Thus far, they haven’t kept that promise. They’re still over pricing most items in the stores and savvy consumers won’t pay inflated prices. Hoop needs to reassess their pricing policy.
Hoop is driving off customers just as did Disney with inflated prices.
It would also be nice if they could carry more of a selection of DVDs and CDs. They play a great selection of Disney music in the shop, but they don't seem to sell any of it at the store near me. They still got a couple of small purchases out of me, but I would have spent more if the product mix was a little better.
I can tell you why they don’t carry a larger selection of DVD’s and CD’s. It’s simple. They don’t have the room to stock them and they can’t compete will the big retailers such as Wal-Mart.
I’ve always thought it rather amusing that when a new Disney DVD is released, the Disney Store would sell it at full retail price while at the same time you could go to Best Buy or Wal-Mart and buy it for a discounted price of 25% or more. CD’s are heavily discounted as well.
Same thing is true for resort rooms at WDW. Does anyone pay rack rate (except for DVC members)? Deep discounts for WDW resort rooms are ubiquitous. But I digress.
The Walt Disney Company has expressed their dissatisfaction with Hoop Retail concerning a whole host of issues. In short, Hoop has been dragging their feet and missing target dates for store refurbishments and failing to take on the full load with the online retail business. They also have been slow to integrate with the Disney retail distribution system. I don’t know what (if any) punitive action Disney will invoke.
For now we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. I tend to think that Hoop is now coming to regret their involvement with Disney.

Well I don't know that I completely agree with that, being that many comparable things I've seen at other stores are either around the same price or higher (even before Hoop took over). Yes there are *some* things that I consider to be overpriced, but there are also many things that I believe are pretty good buys when I see similar items in other stores. If we want to talk about "very inflated prices" when it comes to Disney...the parks are the first place we should be looking. TDS is no where near those prices. If we want to compare to other stores...well even in kids merchandise I've seen prices higher in other stores. A Disney beach towel at Sears was $24.95 this summer, while our beach towels were $14.50 for one...or 2 for $20. Even at 2, we were still cheaper than their 1 towel. Our backpacks at regular price were $19.50 (now on sale for $12.99), their Disney ones were $24.50.

I was thinking about this post last night while I was working at my Disney Store. Sadly, cashier pushing or what we call adding on at the register is something that is nothing new. It's been going on for years and not just at the Disney Stores, but at retail stores in general. It's something that upper management wants done. Do I do it, not really. I'll suggest an add-on at the register, but I don't push the guest to buy it. I don't like when it's done to me, so I won't do it to somebody else. At the parks, there's really no need to do that since people will pretty much buy anything down there (I know I do! LOL!).
FYI, the Disney Store is now carrying an adult Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swan costume as well as Jack and Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas. Just wanted to share that! :)
