View Full Version : Photo Assignment July '07: Water

Summer is upon us. Water is everywhere. Lets photograph it. Pools, lakes, rivers, oceans, quaries, rain, puddles, baths, waterfalls, sprinklers, fountains and any other places or things that have water.
Lots of different options depending on your subject. Good time to play around with shutter speeds to get different effects from moving water. Those with dSLR's can try out a polarizing filter for cutting down on glare.
See how creative you can get. Maybe try something a little different. Get out there with your camera, take some pictures and have LOTS of fun!

Here's some water in a different manner. Drops on a yellow flower, selective coloring on the drops.

I believe I used macro for #s 2 and 3 and super macro for # 4 in manual mode. It's the first time I've had (moderate) success using these features.
And for those of you who've followed my saga, it's still a work in progress but I think it's finally coming together for me. I'm feeling much more comfortable using the varied features of my camera - I don't think I used auto even once. :thumbsup2 We'll see how this week goes with the fireworks.

For those who already posted, can you edit to add what lens you were using and the EXIF info? I like to see that to help with my own "experiments" in shooting.
Oh boy - I get to be the first one to post this picture! (I'm sure lots of folks on this board have the same shot.) I took it on our trip last month:

I've been lurking this board for a while and thought I should finally contribute something. This is my niece playing in Lake Erie over the 4th of July. I shot with my Nikon d50 using a telephoto lens (70-300). I didn't record my shutter speed although I believe it was fairly high (1000 or higher) and my f-stop was lower (lower than 7.1). I've really enjoyed the photos shared here and look forward to sharing more of my own. :camera:

i've been taking this fountain for probably unsuccessfully for 2 months, usually at slow speed ( as slow as i could since it's always really bright) last night i tried high speed and liked it a lot more. it shows the frenetic water better imo
exif 1/1250 f8 200mm canon rebel xt 70-200 f4 lens ( for some reason i messed up the first load to photobucket and now the exif wouldn't come up so the metering is partial, no flash, can't think what else should be there)

I like the first one best, can you zoom in on that perspective and fill the frame with the drop?? That should be awesome!!
I need to do some high speed water drop shots.
BTW, how is the new camera working out? Looks like; Just Fine!!!

Some really great shots everyone!
Here are mine:
http://home.comcast.net/~marykat/Gran_4th_July_Party_20070707_0008web.jpg
shot info: 1/320 f5.6 ISO 100 at 300mm focal length.

shot info: 1/200 f5.6 ISO 100 at 300mm focal length.
The second shot was a happy acident - yesterday was the first day of trying out the new lens, and I am having some issues getting the focus right when I shoot in the 200 - 300 mm range. But I really like the soft focus on this picture, it almost gives it a glowing effect.

Thanks Jann and Andy. I am really trying to push the envelope so to speak. I had never done anything like this before - so it was pushing it for ME.
I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. This was my 3rd attempt at shooting something for this assignment. First two bombed - actually was rained out the first time and had an uncooperative daughter the second.

At the VERY last minute DW and I went to Michigan for the weekend. Just outside Detroit. DW was scheduled to go for a wedding, but at the VERY last minute she realized she forgot to book her flight. :scared1: When I say last minute, I mean after 8pm on Thurs for a flight scheduled for 7am Fri. Anyway, we figured what the heck,,, I'll call in sick for 2 days, my mother can keep the kids for the extra time and the Red Sox are playing IN Detroit, so an extra bonus for me to go. (I'll post those pics on the baseball thread in a few days).
Anyway, the place we stayed at had a little stream running though the property with a little waterfall....

Thanks for the compliments everyone.
Jann, the place we stayed is a privately owned property. Its about 50 miles south/southwest of Detroit and about 1/2 hour south of Ann Arbor. The woman who own's it uses it at a teaching facility. For many years it was used as a music based summer retreat for teen's. Now its used during the summer for mostly teachers, more specific music and other arts teachers. They do a very intense 2 week course on different teaching techniques and learning folk dancing and how it has effected music and movement throught the years. The people who go speak VERY highly of it. My DW absolutly loves it. Teachers from all over the US as well as around the world will attend. After attenting 3 years they become certified to do teaching in their home towns.
The couple who got married, met there last year and wanted to have their wedding there. Many of the people who attend this seminar speak of the experience almost in a spiritual manner. Its kind of hard to explain. But thats why they wanted it there. It was the most UN-traditional wedding I've attended, yet it was also one of the best. Very moving. They both have taken to folk music and had incorperated different dances into the ceremony that involves everyone who attended. I forget which country they used the music from, but it was very very cool to be a part of. The couple, are actually taking part in the current 2 week course, before the go back home to Oregon. I believe it is the brides 2nd year and the groom's 4th or 5th. He is one of the instructors for the course now. They are both music teachers, elementary school level I believe.
These were taken along Lake Erie (Presque Isle Bay) this afternoon. Pretty harsh sunlight; all were taken on a Canon S3 IS:

Jen, this was my first ever trip to Erie - we took DS17 up to Gannon Univ. for Engineering Summer Camp this week. Pretty nice school - I was kind of worried when I heard that Gannon is right IN the city of Erie, but Erie is nothing like Pittsburgh, at least from the little we saw yesterday. I hope this camp helps DS a little with his college decisions.
We were heading home along the lake late afternoon and I just pulled into one of the marinas along the road to check out the sights (and get some pix, too). We're picking DS up Friday afternoon, so I'm hoping to head up there earlier in the day and check out some of the other sights - there's supposed to be an old battleship docked somewhere near Erie that sounds kind of neat.
Sorry....I went way off topic. Back to water........

same with me Andy. every time i go some place to take photos there isn't any water!( we are in semi drought conditions which could explain it ) guess i need to go to lake erie before that dries up as well:)

calm a bridge phobics fears...can you just not see the other side due to the angle or does it go in a tunnel? however the shot is great even if i get the shakes just looking at it:)

You always take for granted the area that you live... I grew up 20 minutes from Plymouth, MA and now currently live about 20 minutes from Concord, MA. Quick history,,, it was in Concord that the Revolutionary War "Started" with "The Shot Heard Around The World". The British went to destory some amo the colonists had stored in Concord and the colonists stoped them. It all started at this bridge, The North Bridge, in Concord, MA. Not the best time of day to get pics, but I liked the little river running there and the rain drops on the river too. Can't wait for the fall. This area is STUNNING with the autumn leaves.

I had a vision in my head of taking this shot, there wasn't enough room at the top of the outflow to see the water and things in the background like I envisioned. But it turned out ok. This is from the outflow of Blue Hole at Santa Rosa, NM. It's the "local" dive spot that we do OW training for scuba diving. I put a blue gel on the flash to give it some interest.

Now that we're into August, will there be an August Photo Assignment? With the kids heading back to school, I'll have a few hours free in the mornings to actually go and play by myself!:cool1: I'm hoping for a bit of practice time before we head to DW in September!:woohoo: TIA!
