We have been saving our extra change since Christmas, for extra spending money in Disney, and putting it into a shoe box (covered in Disney decor of course ;) ).

We opened the box this afternoon, with only a month left until our trip. The final sum was.......

$383 :dance3: :dance3:

It really does pay off to save your change! Imagine what could be saved in a whole year!?! :woohoo:

Anybody else save their change for Disney trips?

I do!! But I think your idea is great. I can see my change in the jar I have but now I think I might try and come up with something that hides it from me and not take it in to be counted until right before our trip (a long ways off - 1196 days to be exact).

Yup, as a matter of fact DH-49 just asked for the new POTC bank, and I bought it under one condition....no coins allowed, only bills, and preferably bills larger than $1. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

We made a rule with our box too: No pennies allowed! I think we had 2 $20's 3 $5's and over 100 $1's. So, we had lots of change (to add up to 383). For next year's trip (hopefully there will be a trip next year), we are going to start saving right away!

When we were is Disney in 04 I carried around a backpack. Anytime I spent money I threw the change into the small pocket of the bakpack. When we got home from that vacation I emptied the change into our new Disney fund and started with over $9. We are going again in September.

Nothing like starting for the next trip when you are still on one...makes the magic keep happening.

I have a HUGE dog biscut plastic container that we use. We go on 1 big vacation once a year, so we save for almost a year. If I'm at store & my total is 2.10, I will give them 3.00 just to get the change back.

It adds up FAST :)

We just rolled all the money that was in the box, plus more change that we scraped up from around the house, and we have a new total!

$426 :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

While some money is going to christmas decorations, we have agreed that my sister and I are going to split it for extra spending money :goodvibes  .

Only 26 more days... :upsidedow

I just took a 5 gallon water bottle (the kind that go on top of the dispenser) and made a big colorful "sign" that says "Disney Fund" and taped it to the bottle...there is also a note on there for DH to "keep out until Jan 2008" :rotfl:

We save our loose change too!! And I thought we were the only ones who did that!! :goodvibes

We save in an old shoebox, and that change turns into our money for meals (we never do the dining plan), and it always adds up quick. We usually never spend it all and bring some cash home to start saving for the next Disney trip!!

OK, I fixed my huge jar up so now I can't see in it. I told DH that I didn't want to dump it all out until September 1, 2010. We counted it though before we closed it up and since January I have put around $60.00 in there :thumbsup2 I should have a nice amount by the time the trip finally gets here. I noticed that DH threw a $5.00 bill in there yesterday.

We also save change. We take it to coinstar, does everyone have those? I noticed I have less change now that we have to save quarters for the laundry machine at our complex! Boo!

I can't roll them as my bank gives me stress for turning in rolled coins.

What do you do with yours to get the real cash? :lmao:

We have a glass water jug and we put change in and also a box for dollar bills. I just got done rolling our change and it was $2253. And that was with out the dollars and it was just a little over a year it took to save that and I was able to pay our whole vacation with it.

Wow! That is great!

Our bank has a self service coin counter. You do it all yourself and then it prints off a ticket that shows how much you have and you take it to the teller to get cash or deposit it. Works great. No more rolling coins for me.

They only take a percentage out if you don't have a account there but since we do they don't.

We just roll our change and then bring it into the bank. If they give us a hard time, so what. There is no rule that says we can't bring in $200 worth of coins! :rotfl:

Until our trip comes (only 24 more days!), we are going to continue to save our 'last-minute' change. We just wanted to get most of the coins rolled so we didn't have to worry about it when the trip got really close! :goodvibes

I have to say, I am not surprised that so many people on the DIS save their change for trips. We DISers are so smart. :thumbsup2 ;)

Ashbee- All I can say is, WOW! That is a lot of change!! And so many people keep saying that a Disney trip is too expensive! All you have to do is save your change for a little bit and before you know it, there is enough to pay for a whole trip!!! Ashbee, you give hope to a lot of people. :thumbsup2

Dis-Wiz thank you. THe only reason we are able to save so much is my husband god bless him hardly ever spends dollar bills and never uses his change so we just stick the money in the appropiate containers and when no more dollars fit in the box I count them and put them in rubber band and I roll the change when I can hardly lift the water jug. It works well for us and Disney World is always a good way to spend the extra cash.

I just bought a cute little Mickey change holder thingy from the Disney store a couple weeks ago. I put all my loose change in there (minus pennies!) and I'm gonna start putting bills in too!

I get excited just looking at it sometimes.

Our official family vacation jar only has about $120 in it and we leave next Friday. DH keeps forgetting about that money when he tries to figure out the budget though so that's cool. I also have a hidden Pringles can that I have been putting quarters only in since last summer. I glued the lid on and I am determined to not take it off until Wednesday. I'm thinking maybe around $75 in there but I am counting it as $0 so whatever it is will be great!

I think this is one area where Canadians have an advantage, we have 2 Dollar and 1 Dollar coins, so coin can add up real quick. I have a tin can that has over a 1000.00 coin in it, and another that is half full, I figure there is about 1700.00 so far. Not using it for Disney this time though, it's spending $$ for our Egyptian cruise in Nov. Then I start again for Disney next year :)

That's awesome!!! Unfortunately it wouldn't work for us...only thing we're able to save are pennies...all "silver coins" are used by me for the bus. We looked into getting a bus pass but those are only worth it if I was taking the bus twice a day 5 days a week...which I don't. Neat idea though!! :)

The kids have been doing this with an Ariel piggy bank and it is getting really heavy...I also noticed when I peeked inside that they have "found" some paper money to stuff in. Who know how much they will have! They know they will split it 50/50 and buy whatever they want!

This reminds me of what happened the other day with our vacation jar. My DBro came over and noticed our vacation jar sitting in the kitchen. He made a comment about ' I can't believe you let that sit around with kids in the house'. I said are you kidding, the kids are the most worried about it. DH tried to exchange paper money for quarters for the parking meters and one kid started screaming and the other one lunged for him. Needless to say, he waits til they are in bed to get his change now.

I use a large yogurt container and put in all single bills, change and "found" money- ie: laundry, assorted denominations of bills found in pockets of out of season coats/bags, etc. I'm also selling a few things on ebay and anything that comes in from those sales will go into the fund too.

We have a rocket, LOL Its a container that is probably as tall as my 4 year old, Looks like a rocket. It originally had fireworks in it but the cone had a slot in it to use as a bank. So the past couple of years we have been adding to it. Not as much as I would like and I had the no penny rule but the kids forgot all about that (but still mostly silver change and some dollar bills), its probably a quater way full.....I can't lift it. I can't wait to see how much is in there. We go mid September.

Just wondering why people have a no penny rule? I put everything in there. I know it takes a lot to add up but anything helps. We get excited when we find a penny on the ground because we know it is going in our Disney jar.

That sounds so neat! A couple years worth of change is REALLY going to add up! Is there something particular you are going to buy with the money? Or is it just spending money at Disney?
We originally planned on buying all Christmas stuff with the money in our box, but we decided to split it up and just use it for extra spending money.

We will bet on how much is there. lol The person that wins will get some extra cash!

I won last time! DH and DS were way off. That change ADDS up!

We usually dedicate the money to something special. I need to come up with some ideas.

I collect every denomination, even the pennies but I put the pennies in a separate fish bowl. I have a water jug that only the bills go in, a coffee can that only the nickels go in an then another bank that dimes and quarters go in. I don't know why, guess its just psychological but i like seeing pennies by themself. Even once the fishbowl fills up it only comes out to about 30 bucks but that isnt bad for only pennies. My trip is coming up in September and I am trying to take in all the change and spare $1 bills I can. CANT WAIT!!!! This will be my first time HOME in 10 years!

How funny I found this thread... the kids and I literally just sorted and counted the change in DH's change jar!!! It's only been 2-3 months since we last counted so we only had $42, but we still have 6 months before we go!

We have ours in a large, red, plastic Folgers (I think) coffee container. It was already red with a black lid so we just added a nice picture of the castle on the front. You'd never know it was a coffe can!

Since we don't use the pennies we find for our Disney box, we just save the real shiny ones for making pressed pennies. :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

We haven't gone to the bank yet; the rolled up money in still sitting here, LOL. So we decided to continue to save our change until we go to the bank. I think we already saved up a good $10 in the passed couple of weeks. Not an awful lot, but to think there's about 35-40 quaters and several dimes saved up in just a couple of weeks, that's pretty good. :)

I'm thinking that next year, we are going to save up the change in one of our popcorn buckets we got at Disney. We have about four of them in the back of our cupboard. We wanted to save them, but we aren't getting any use out of them.

We save EVERYTHING from the brown money to the green money. :woohoo: We have a tall Pepsi bottle bank that we save everything in. In 2005 we saved like $600. I am hoping that we will have about the same for this December. My little on knows that whatever he finds laying around the house to put in the disney fund bank. So we have to be careful where we lay our money around or he will pick it up and put it in the bank. And there goes my lunch money for the week.:rotfl:

Go to this link, it states where all the pressed penny machines are and includes
pictures! It also says that the books for the pressed pennies are $7.00. I am not sure how old this site is, but I would imagine that they keep it updated, since it is an "unofficial guide."
