View Full Version : Underrated and/or under appreciated Disney movies

And no, this isn't another Treasure Planet inspired thread. :p This was actually inspired by The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and The Emperor's New Groove, all movies that I recently watched and really appreciated (and this was actually the first time in several years that I've 'Hunchback' and I have to say, I've really been missing out). Well, while watching them I started thinking: Hey, these movies are pretty awesome, why don't I ever hear people talking about them? How come all this great music isn't nearly as widely known? Why can't I find a Kuzco plush in any Disney store anywhere? =(

(Okay, yeah, I think that way about Treasure Planet too. :teeth:)

So anyway, I just think that it's a little unfair for certain movies to end up virtually forgotten by the mainstream in only a few years while other movies that aren't any better quality wise are forever lauded as classics. Not complaining about the ones that get the fame, most are perfectly deserving of their fame, but why the narrow focus on only a select few movies? I could walk into any Disney Store and find twenty each of Stitch and Princess items in minutes (the same old predictable princesses that get all the attention, I might add), but it would take either a well-stocked flea market or a few days on eBay to find any sort of merchandise at all from The Emperor's New Groove. The other two (non-TP) movies fared somewhat better, I think, but it's still harder than need be to find decent merchandise.

And really, it's not just about the merchandise, but the pride. They were all terrific movies that have bees passed over for no good reason at all. Where's the justice?

Okay, discuss. Are there any Disney movies that you think have been unfairly treated in the long run, or would just like to see more of around the parks and stores?

I have to agree with all that were mentioned, but there is a older live action plus with animation that I love and that is Pete's Dragon.

Duh, how could I forget about The Great Mouse Detective. I love that movie. X__x That one's awesome, and barely anyone cares or even remembers it exists. Oliver and Company, too (just ask my bro, he adores Billy Joel and is quite indignant that his big Disney debut isn't as popular as some movies.)

Song of the South-They really need to remaster this one, so called 'racism' be darned!.

Sword in the Stone-True classic.

Pocahontas-I don't know why this is so disliked among fans of Disney's past work... In my opinion, this one is on par with the Little Mermaid.

Treasure Planet, of course.

Emperor's New Groove-This is one of my favorite Disney movies, but it unfortunetly doesn't get much attention.

It's already been mentioned but..

Pocahontas. It's my all-time favorite Disney movie, and it kills me not to see her listed with the Disney Princesses, and she was one of the original ones. Nothing in the parks. Nothing in the stores. Nothing online. Even the Halloween costume looks nothing like her dress. Yes, they had plenty of merchandise when it first came out, but not anymore. It kills me.

Hah, sorry, but I have felt very strongly about this for a long time, it built up. =p

I just thought of something. What about Dinosaur? I mean, how many people would you bet even remember that one at all? Countdown to Extinction *was* changed to feature the statue of Aladar and even has some merchandise at the end-store, but if you ask all of the people riding what they think of the movie, I doubt that even five or six will have seen it.

And I definitely agree with Lion King 2. One of Disney's only good sequels and a great movie on it's own (with an awesome soundtrack, too), and NOWHERE can you find anything about it. I'd love a Kiara stuffed animal. ;_;

Atlantis was great. Nightmare isn't underrated - it's overrated. There's like 10 billion fansites. And it isn't actually technically a Disney movie - it wasn't originally released under the Disney name, anyway. It was first released under TouchStone. In the 2000's, Disney decided that society had grown weird enough for them to be able to release it under the Walt Disney Pictures title and market it as a kid's movie.

I'd have to say Newsies and The Haunted Mansion. I'm a chorus geek and we watch the Newsies like every year. I'm also in the competitive barbershop quartet here, so every time the Haunted Mansion comes on I HAVE to watch the part with the singing busts, if not anything else. It's so hilarious!

I also agree with the Hunchback. I just watched a month ago and appreciated so much more than when I was a kid. I think it was never really commercialized because it was such a controversial story.

Def Herc! I love it and the music! It definatly needs some TLC in Disneyworld.
As does The Emperor's New Groove, i LOVE that film and there is NO merchandice!
Mulan is amazing, i love it so much, but there is almost nothing in the parks about her. I would love to have something with mulan on it. MUST get a pin next time i'm there.
Song of the south! I love it, i know the whole racism thing and condoning slavery, but its a good movie. Why keep the ride when they have banned the movie. We recorded it off the TV years ago so i have seen is, but its getting really old now. Im probs gonna buy it off Ebay!
Fantasia! I love it, didnt have the video till this year when i picked it up in a charity shop. Its great to fall asleep to!

101 Dalmations: Ok, but isn't that good!

101 Dalmatians IS GOOD.
It was the highest grossing movie in 1961, beating out West Side Story. It's the 11 on the highest grossing film of all time in the US & Canada.
And has one a BAFTA award.
It's not one of Walt's more successful movies, but you can partially blame that on Sleeping Beauty (the failure of this movie gave Walt limited funds to make 101 Dalmatians). It's one of the Disney classics, that SHOULD be integrated into WDW.

I'd have to say Newsies and The Haunted Mansion. I'm a chorus geek and we watch the Newsies like every year..

You are like my new favorite person because you know the movie Newsies. XD.

My vote (obviously) is for Newsies. True, it's really cheesey and some of it is slightly bad, but it's a live-action musical. AND it's directed by Kenny Ortega... Disney should cash in on his success with HSM and at least show it on Disney Channel or something.
And 18-year-old Christian Bale singing and dancing? HELLO!!!! lol

Also, Oliver & Co. used to be one of my favorite movies when I was little and there is NO recognition for it. And Hercules and Pocahantas deserve more credit *cough2discdvdspecialfeaturecough*

Song of the South - I used to love that when I was little (my gran gave me the old tape last christmas when I had chicken pox and I still love it and know all the songs)

Newsies - seriously if people can appreciate High School Musical I'm sure they can appreciate this (same director) and in my oppinion it's much better than High School Musical

Peter Pan - I think it deserves more recognition than it gets (yes it does get heaps) but I think it's way better than half the stuff Disney is producing today

I'm looking for that everywhere. I hpe they can figure out a way to put it out on dvd.

I love that movie.

I think an underrated Disney movie is The Three Caballeros. One of my favorites, I haven't seen it in a long time though. Either my mom threw out the tape by accident or it's lost somewhere in my house.

GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE!!!
I seriously used to think I was going to marry Basil when I was older. I'm not as obsessed now, but I saw it when I was 6 and kinda stopped being obsessed when I turned 13, but I still love it. I know a lot about it after my obsession.

Just thought I'd put that out there....

Anyway HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, alltime favorite movie ever! (besides pirates alice rent, and nightmare) I always get so mad that nobody appreciates it anymore. they don't even have the show in disney world anymore :sad1:
