You have put together a really good and informative article to get someone started with digital scrapbooking! Great job!

I get a lot of questions about my digital pages and how they are done, I am going to refer people to this article.

Fabulous job; thanks for taking the time to write this. :)

Disney has yet to come out with items for digital scrapping (booo)

I couldn't help but laugh at this bit of (needed) editorializing. :rotfl:

Had another thought: what about a section for advantages/reasons for digital scrapping? For instance, the cost can be less, and you can manipulate and reuse products. Then, there's the Undo button. :thumbsup2 And the lack of mess.

Here's hoping for a sticky! This deserves it! :wizard:

Great job, Fran! This is EXCELLENT, and I sure hope it gets stickied as it would have helped me immensely when I was first starting out. Actually, I'm going to go search out some of those sites you mentioned - there were a few I don't have! Woot! LOVE new scrapping sites to explore! :goodvibes

Thanks, Fran!

Thanks for doing this Fran! It will come in handy when I finally sit down and learn PSE. My hope is to digi scrap our upcoming trip and have it printed in a nice book for my parents for Christmas (they're coming on the trip w/us).:)

Hi Fran & everyone,

Can you add ACDSee Photo Editor to your list of digiscrapping programs please?

And maybe a section in your FAQ on organizing your kits once you have SO many (that usually comes after the list of sites where you can get freebies!). :cool1: It's a whole lot easier to get organized from the beginning rather than later when you're swamped.

ACDSee Photo Manager is the preferred software for organizing digiscrapping supplies. We have premade categories & tutorials to get everyone started.
And I love scrapping with ACDSee Photo Editor because it's user friendly & has a great set of how-to's built in.

30 day trials & tutorials can be found at DigiScrapInfo.com (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/dsiwiki/DigiScrapInfo) and we provide support in our forum & tips on our blog.

And I have seen Disney digital scrapping items around. I'll be on the look out for you guys.

Just to add to the plethora of beginner tutorials out there, I have a new one for a My First Layout with PSE tut up at Digitals today. The link is in the OP of the FAQ (digitalscrapbookpages.com).

I also recommend Hummie's World for PSE tutorials. She has a First Layout tut, although it covers more subjects than mine. www.hummiesworld.com for that one.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I had decided after looking at some sights and seeing the "expense" of printing digiscrapbooks to not do it. Now I think I am going to!

I'll give it a whirl when I get back from Disney next month.... If I can wait that long!

Again, thanks so much!

What does "sticky" mean? I am new to these boards. Thanks!

Fran98765

Sticky is just the term to describe a thread that has been "stuck" to the top, so it won't get lost, it will always remain at the top of the list.

I'm a newbie to the digi-world...ok...i'm new to scrapbooking in general. But I just don't have the time or the space for the traditional method of scrapping so I'm diving into the digital world instead!

Anyway...I've found a program that I think I like for my mac (iscrapbook), but I was wondering, can someone explain to me how the various downloads work? Like when I go to a company online and download "stuff"...is it a one time use kind of thing? Or is it one of those once you download it, you can use it as many times as you want to?

Thanks so much for this tutorial of sorts! It's very helpful!

Most of it is yours to keep as far as I know, but I am new to this as well.

As for the person who asked how something becomes a sticky that has an easy answer. The moderators (aka the gods that control these boards) click on the post and hit "make a sticky" or something like it (depending on the board software). We mere mortals don't have those rights. I am not sure how this board works, but usually when you become a top poster or are extremely "loyal" to the board (spend a lot of time on them) they (the moderators) will invite you to moderate and give you such privileges.

Sorry I can't help with the iscrapbook/mac part of this - I am an avid PC user since the AppleIIE!!! But, regarding the packs you can download, these usually come with a liscensing agreement which boil down to: You can use it over & over for your own personal use, but cannot re-distribute or make copies. Pretty standard. But they are usuallyjust jpgs, psd, png or other standard file types.

Just read the details before buying. For example, you wouldn't want to download any "Actions" as most of these are only pertinent and usable in PhotoShop products.

Thank you so very much for your help!

I actually bought a pack of stuff from ACOT and played with it tonight. I've figured it out...and it doesn't appear to be a one time use thing, thankfully!

I've now got to go ahead and buy the full version of the iScrapbook. It's getting easier to manuever through...I can't wait to do a full book!!

Great...yet another addiction! At least this one won't clutter up the house...unlike my cake decorating stuff!!

I just finished my very first page on a free trial of Photoshop Elements (thought I'd try it before I bought it!!). I see that you have some links for printing, but I can't figure out how to get a whole layout printed. Also, I don't have a Costco near me...does Walmart do the same thing? I have that and a Rite-aid - I'm just not sure how to go about printing off the whole layout...

When I looked at the bound books (which I eventually want to do) it seems like they want you to use their formats/backgrounds, and just your pics, not your whole layout... help!

You upload your scrapbook page to shutterfly for the books. You have to change a couple of their settings to do that, which I don't remember offhand, but you get what you make.

Newbie here. I have not done any pages, and so far, all I have done is gather graphics to use in making signs for the door of our cabin on our cruise. I have accumulated a lot of stuff, and I am wondering how you keep this all organized and just where you store all this stuff so that you can find thins easily?

Fran98765
03-07-2008, 12:16 PM
I organize by Site then Designer then kit name. It really helps when giving proper credit. It is courteous and customary to credit the designers when you post at forums, so this makes it easy.

My folders look like this:

3 Scrapateers
designer
kit a
kit b
designer
kit
Digitals
Glenda Ketcham :goodvibes
Mouse Scraps
Mouse Scraps Addon
Tiggeriffic
Seebee - Chris Beasley
kit a
kit b

and so forth... you get the idea. When a designer sells at more then 1 store, I keep them in one store to stay together, unless I don't realize they sell in more then one, then I have 2 folders for them! LOL It really gets fun when they change stores! haha

Being on several CTs I find that I usually use a kit exclusively, so keeping the kits together is extremely helpful for me. When I started, I read somewhere that you should separate by pieces, all blue backgrounds in a folder, then all green ones, and brads and flowers all in diff folders, but you know what? Designer A and Designer B kept naming their stinking flowers with the same names and it was ridiculous! That and I didn't know who had what stuff. Writing up my credits took longer then making the layout!

You may want to invest in ACDSee Photo Manager. You put labels on your pics and it will do a search for you. For example if you wanted a blue background, you plug that in and it will pull up all your labelled blue backgrounds in all directories. I NEED that!!!

Britt-ish Designs just came out with an awesome Disney freebie and a HUGE mega-kit of Disney-esque stuff. You can find them both here (http://*************************.com/) and in the store at ScrapMatters (http://scrapmatters.com/shop2/index.php?main_page=product_dnld_info&products_id=301)

I got them both today and I can't WAIT to play!!

I've used www.polkadotpotato.com for printing and been VERY happy with the results. Shutterfly does some scrapbook printing but their prices are high.

I also organize by site, designer and kit name. for designers i buy a lot from (or if they sell at a few places), i give them their own master folder.

I just started to scrapbook (thanks to all of you for inspiration!!)
I wanted to email a page to my sister; however, I tried to attach the scrap page to my email, and my email account could not "read" it. I am using PhotoShop Elements and I saved my scrap page using photoshop PSD.PDD format. I thought the format might be the problem -- does anyone know? If I re-save the project as a JPEG, would the quality decrease when printed?

I truly appreciate any thoughts and advice! Thank you!

Always keep the original .psd of your file. You won't believe when you realize you put the dates wrong on some layout and you need those layers!!

In addition to keeping my original file (it's .pspimage for PSP), I save a small jpg for sharing. Those .psd and .psp files are HUGE, I'm talking like 50MG HUGE! If you are ever considering posting layouts to a scrap site or even here, resize your image to 600x600 and then for PSE you save for web, in PSP you export jpeg. This will give you a web friendly image, which will look just fine on the computer. The jpg will be super reduced and cannot be printed, tho so don't lose the original!

i realized this too late after completing some Disney pages, then came across some really cool Disny background stuff, and had to start from scratch. I found that keeping the PSD files were slowing my computer down. so now, i will transfter the PSD files to my external hard drive and only keeping the Jpg pages so i can make them into a digital book when i get enough done

Thanks for advice -- very helpful!! One more question about formats:
If I convert my pages to jpeg and send them to a company to print (such as Scrapbook to Share), will the quality of my pages be poor? Or, should I send them in their orginal .psd format? Thanks again!

Fran98765

Companies want the full size .jpg's. That means you don't do the reducing part. When you "save for the web" in PSE, you are reducing the resolution of your image as well, so you would just use "save as" and then change to .jpg. You would also use the full size, either 12x12 or 8x8 or whatever size you want printed. When you reduce the image to 600x600 prior to saving for the web, you are making your image 2x2. Don't ever print that unless you want a sheet of thumbnails! LOL

I've printed 2 Shutterfly books at 8x8. Even though I create at 12x12. I reduced each original image to just under 8x8 (they trim edges) and then used "save as" and saved them as jpg's. Then I uploaded those images to the website and got the books printed.

How does everyone save their original scrapbook page? When I first started I read to save the original as a TIFF file since most programs can read that. But I have since see a couple other sources that say to save the original as a PSD. (I'm working with PSE 5.0) So I was just wondering if anyone knows if one is actually better than the other.

I save a copy of the original file format and then flatten and save a full size jpg. I move the original formats to my external hard drive for safe keeping in case I need to fix something before printing. Once I have a collection I burn them to a DVD just to be safe. It may seem a little much but if you read the help threads in the digi forums you will come across more then a few stories in every single one where someone has lost everything to a crash. Anyway, for printing, you want a flattened full res jpg or tiff and for editing purposes your original format.

disneyfan2
04-18-2008, 09:18 AM
Wenrob, I do the same, but i am still new to PS5. I have not flatten the jpeg image when i saved it. Will that cause a problem when i print them.

Fran98765
04-18-2008, 09:32 AM
I save my original file as is, in case I ever need to go back and fix things, and I have prior to printing... found spelling or grammar errors, dates wrong, etc. When I create, I also save a 600x600 jpg, for posting on the web. Once I have a DVD full, I burn the files to dvd, and keep the 600x600 jpg on my hard drive.

wenrob
04-18-2008, 10:07 AM
If you don't flatten it before you save as jpg, things will look funny, your shadows etc will be off. Just make sure you save your original file first then "merge all" (flatten) and make sure you do "save as" rather then "save" when you save it to a jpg. If you want to be extra careful, save it under a slightly different name.

Fran I also keep 600x600 copies on my computer. They run in a slide show on my screen saver.

Thanks for all your ideas. :) I found out last night why I should save as a PSD. I was working on a double page layout and instead of cropping it down to single pages before saving I left it because I wasn't done with it yet (it was getting close to 2 am :scared1: ). The file was too large to save as a TIFF, so I tried it as a PSD and it worked. I had been saving all my origials as TIFF up until then. It still saves it as layers and I can go back and edit it, so I was just wondering if there was another reason.
I do have the originals and JPEG's saved to an EDH and to DVD's. I've had too many problems w/ computers not to do that. On my last computer I crashed the motherboard. So I try to be very diligent about saving every thing to multiple places because I have had CD's go bad on me too.:sad2:

OK, so I think I might have created some layout in 180res. (My computer defaulted and I forgot to check when I opened a new page) How do you check some of my files are at 3600 x 3600 (9,000KB) and some are at 2160x2160 (3,600KB). How will the 2160 print? OK or worth doing over? And then, if I chose to do over. Can I just pull the items/elements/papers and picture off of this page onto a new 300dpi page? OR do I have to start from scratch?

HELP PLEASE!

I'm not 100% sure but I think you'd have to redo everything since your program defaulted to that, your stuff that you added would default to the low res too. I think.... I have had stuff printed at 2400 and it looks good but honestly 3600 is far superior so you have to think if that will bother you or make you disappointed.

Basically, 2400x2400 pixels is equal to 8x8 inch size. You can probably upsize them to 8x8 without much quality loss. If you resize them up to 12x12 they may look grainy.

OK, another one here for you pros!!

How do you make the picture faded or fuzzy on the edge of the picture? I have a few I don't want solid edge? I know how to ink an edge but that doesn't work.

In PSE 5.0 I use the cookie cutter (star w/ person on it button) for this. You can feather the edge to make it look faded this way. After you select your shape there is a space to the right of that where you can put in how many pixels to feather. The higher your number the larger your faded edge will be.

You have to buy the kit to get the brag book and it comes in the zips. I think the zip is 'sprite3.' The freebie Jess mentions is on Britt's blog.

Creative Memories released their Digital Disney kits today and they are pretty cute. I especially like the Mickey add ons and the Power palette! They even have some Hannah Montana stuff for those that are Hannah fans. You have to order them from a consultant's website and they can only be used in their software now, not PSE or anything else. Maybe someday they'll catch on and make them so everyone can use them!

You can't use templates in .psd format, those are only for photoshop. You can use .png templates. I just bring them in and then layer things on top f them in SBC+. I haven't figured out another way to do it yet. Some people have started making templates in SBC+ for SBC+. I have a couple on my blog. I have some more to post, too.

Here are some you can try.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/1uc752
Download them, unzip them and save them in your CM Storybooks folder. Then open them as a project or import them as a page in an existing storybook. Someone I know on another board made these. She has more and I will post the links to those later! Give them a try!

Hello!

In SBC+ choose the element that you want to change and go to the Tools ribbon and go to paper - if you use the drop down arrow - it will access your paper in your CM Kits and My Stuff and choose on and it will convert your element to that paper.

I hope that helps. :)

Help please, all you digi gurus :worship: :worship: and godesses, :worship: :worship:

I am new to scrapbooking and wanted to go toward digi-scrapbooking because I don't have the space for all that paper/embellishments etc.

I have PSE 4 and I have downloaded a couple of freebie kits to try and play around with, just to get myself used to the process. (These are paper and embellishment kits, not templates)

I can get the background paper up OK, but when I include the embellishments, they have a white square around them. If I load the embellishments into a seperate project, they have transparency around them. I have read the PSE manual, search online for a tutorial, but cannot find out where I am going wrong. I thought I would just be able to drag and drop the embellishments onto my page, but it seems not. I can, with a bit of effort, extract the image using the magic wand tool, but ... is there an easier way? I just feel as though I am being a bit stupid here. 3 hours gone today and nothing to show for it:confused:

I would be grateful for any hints or tips you may share. TIA!

-Kay

You don't have to use the wand --

ok, once you have your bg paper up, then open up your embellishment file,
Then, (on your emb. file) hit Control A - that will select it and give you your "marching black ants" around it - then simply right click, copy and then go to your bg paper file and right click and paste. That should be it :)

Newbie here...I have some digital layouts that I'd like to print into an 8x8 shutterfly book...I'm kinda stuck as to where I begin. I designed them in 12x12, so first I need to resize them. Do I resize them to 8x8 or to some other dimension for printing?:confused3

After they have been resized, is there something else that I need to do to them...i.e. "flatten" them or something? I understand that they need to be 300 dpi jpegs, but how do I go about doing this? :confused3

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

I have done 3 shutterfly books, so I'm an old pro!! I make pages at 12x12 as well and my books are also 8x8.

Step 1: figure out the order of all your pages. I copy all my layouts into a new directory and then rename them page1, page2, etc. Remember that page 1 will be on the right side, alone.
Step 2: open each layout in your program, the original file with the layers.
Step 3: resize to 7.75 x 7.75, NOT 8x8.
Step 4: check your page, do you have anything really important on the edges, like text? if so move it in a little, especially if the page will be in the binding.
Step 5: Save as a .jpg file

Did you make the cover and spine? I get the templates from the shutterfly site for the cover and spine, do not put any images too close to the edge, they will be folded over as the cover is made.

When you upload each image to shutterfly, after it's "in" your book, click on the page and you will see some options. TURN OFF the color fixing tool, you do not want them "enhancing" your layouts!

Leave a lot of time... uploading to their site is a LONG process!

Make sure you use a coupon or click on a banner with a sale, most big digital scrapbooking sites have shutterfly banners with cheaper prices. I know for sure that www.thescrappinggarden.com has them currently.

And... if you want to see my 3 books:
http://community.shutterfly.com/gallery/post/start.sfly?postId=/gallery/1/post/GMGDFgzYOW7loyZAIR213E
http://community.shutterfly.com/gallery/post/start.sfly?postId=/gallery/1/post/GMGDFgzYOW7loyZA_9Xr_K
http://community.shutterfly.com/gallery/post/start.sfly?postId=/gallery/1/post/GMGDFgzYOW7loyZAfpV2W-

There seems to be a problem with the Shutterfly gallery right now, so hopefully those are the correct links, I know it's not working right now.

I use SBC+ (in fact, I started a whole thread for us SBC+ users, come join us!). I use all kinds of freebies and other kits in the program. The only thing that won't work are .psd templates. You have to look for templates in .png formats. Or just use some templates for inspiration and make them up in SBC+!

Here is a relatively new printing service. I have heard good things about them, and they are fairly cheap. They do photobooks and now they do single pages too. It's www.mypictales.com

There is also a coupon for 200 free prints in the august DST newsletter if you spend $10: http://www.digishoptalk.com/newsletters/DSTInsider-Aug08.pdf on page 11.

The 12x12 single pages are 75 cents, I do not know about shipping costs.

And on page 20 is a mega freebie!

I have heard that some taggers just get scrap kits in case they wish to print down the line, then they've spent their money in a dual purpose. Of course you'd have a lot of resizing that way.

One of these days, I will be ready to print a book and I wondered if I should do 8x8 or 12x12. 8x8 is cheaper and fits better on a bookshelf, but my concern is this: I tend to put multiple pictures on each page. Will they be too tiny on an 8x8? I want to be able to see faces and smiles in the LO. Anyone with 8x8 have any suggestions? Thanks!

You know I have printed test copies at 5x5 and they look just as great and are as easy to see. As long as your pics are good resolution 8x8 should be fine if that's what you prefer. I kind of locked myself into 12x12 but if I were to start over I'd go w/10x10 or 8x8. Then again it's kinda neat to see my creations bigger then life.:lmao:

Thanks Wen. Just wanting to clarify: even if I have 8-10 pictures on a page, an 8x8 will look OK? My goal is to be able to see the pictures/faces/expressions. Thanks again. Perhaps I should just print a page in 8x8 and 12x12 and see what I like before committing to a book.

I think they will. Everything is so much bigger once printed then on our monitor. Do you have a home printer? Maybe print a test 8x8 on a regular 8x10 sheet or run a couple over to Kinkos or something. It would be worth the couple of extra bucks just to be sure. My cousin prints 4x6 multiple pic prints and they're always fairly easy to see.

DUH!! Why didn't I think to just print an 8x8 at home on just a regular piece of computer paper as a test?? Here I was planning about how I had to send out for a test print. Thanks!!

I guess it would depend of what type of font you were looking for ...

For journaling, I like to use fonts that look hand written or basic cursive. I usually use Susie's hand, kemie px, or CK journaling.
The more basic fonts I use are Century Gothic which I think comes with Photoshop or Word.

I love different fonts. I usually get them from dafont.com. They have so many that you'll find something you like just need time to look at each category. Have fun!

Need advice from seasoned scrappers:
I did not become a scrapper until AFTER returning from my 1st trip to Disney. So, I never paper-scrapped; I just jumped into digital. I told myself I was only going to scrap the Disney vacation and be done. Well, it is addicting as you know and now I am seriously considering digi-scrapping non-vacation pictures. But so many questions:
I guess there's no better time to start than now, but what about all the years before? I cannot go back and scrap those (not realistic) I think the answer here is to just start now and go forward, right?
How do you organize: do you have a book for each year? Or??
I have more questions, but I don't want to scare anyone yet. Besides, I need to finish this Disney vacation first.
Sorry for my ramblings. Thanks for any advice.

For me personally, I've realized I can't scrap it all. Right now I am sticking to photo that are on my computer (2006-2008) but at the moment I'm focusing on 2007 and trying to keep up with 2008. Now, I take anywhere from 20-100 pics at a time. There is no way I could scrap all of that so I do the pics that speak to me at the moment. My plan is to scrap the highlights and put the rest on a DVD slide show to keep in a pocket w/the album.
I have scrapped some scanned pics when the mood strikes but my goal with hard copies is to eventually have them archived on DVDs. Will I eventually scrap those? I couldn't tell ya. Maybe when all my kids are out of the house but then I'm sure I'll have grandkids to scrap then.:lmao:
I guess my point is:Don't put pressure on yourself, do what moves you. What fun would it be if you felt you needed to do all of them versus enjoying the ones you've done? Just my 2cents, hope it helps!

I've been scrapping for years, but I'm new to the world of digital scrapping. My DD is a senior this year and is wanting to make some books for some of her friends, with photos through their school years together. I'm thinking digital is the way for her to go because she can probably use the same layout (with a few variations) for more than one gift.

So I'm investigating what's out there and now I'm getting interested. Not that I think I'll like this better. I actually like manipulating the paper and ribbon. But I think it's a cool way to make gifts and computer journaling has to be faster than writing by hand. I'm intrigued.

I guess I'm going to start collecting freebies, but I'm a little overloaded at all the info. I'm a little confused as to how I should organize what I download. I'd like to eventually burn a CD...can I do that?

I have photoshop and photoshop elements. I'm somewhat familiar with them. Which do you prefer? Guess I need to do a tutorial. Any other suggestions for me?

09-19-2008, 07:02 PM
Hi Melissa! This is a good place to start, I'm pretty new too but I started just using the links at the beginning of this thread and looking at everyone's work.

I've mentioned to Kate that it would be great way to do pics of friends and school, I think the idea is good and she'd probably do most of the work.

The real problem with digital is storage space, I'd suggest looking for a good deal on an external drive. Space isn't that expensive and it fills up pretty quickly. I've got a portable one that is great for being able to take with you.

I ended up organizing my stuff in folders like Papers, Alphas etc. I like when they name their kit with a constant so I can use search to pull a complete kit.

I'm using PSE since thats the cheap version; I think PS can do more.

Good luck, I'm actually getting a few things done I like that part :)

What are "masks"? And how do they work? What do you do with them?
Okay, the very short answer is they are tools you use to edit or apply effects to your pictures. For instance, if I want to erase something in a pic or on an elements I'll use a mask over the pic so I don't damage the pic. So I'm not actually erasing anything I'm just 'masking' it. You can do tons w/masks and they are contained in your program. A good way to find out about them is to google "your program's name, masks" and you should be able to find tons of info that way.

I have some questions about printing and would appreciate advise:

1. When you print, do the edges get cut off? Do you suggest resizing slightly smaller than the original so that doesn't happen? Or if you do re-size, will it be too small and you end up with a white border? I created my LOs in 12x12, but I think I will print them into an 8x8 book. Oh, I am going to use Shutterfly's photo book if that makes a difference.

2. Once you are done printing, what do you do with the computer copies? I am done with my Disney 2008 book. For each LO, I have a PSD copy, a JPEG copy, and a web-sized copy. It would be nice to clear up some space on my computer. Do you all just burn these onto a disc? Can you burn the PSD copy onto a disc and if so, would I still be able to edit it?

Sorry these printing questions go on and on, but I want to get it right (or close to right) the first time.

Thanks again!

I do shutterfly 8x8 books as well and I've done 3, and this is what I've learned.

Although I create in 12x12, I prefer the smaller size. When you are ready to do your album, or if you ready each page as you make them... resize your scrapbook page to 7.75x7.75, yes it's smaller then the 8x8. Trust me on this one!

Also! ... If you have "important" things near edges... like text or a major part of a picture, or just a pretty embellishment, but especially that TEXT! MOVE it! Bring it in a bit, and if the page will be on the binding side, move it a little bit more!

Be prepared to have your uploading of pages take a LONG time. Shutterfly is not fast and can get annoying, but the book you get will be worth it. I mostly mention this because if your coupon expires tonight, you better get moving quickly! It will take a few hours.

And since I didn't mention it... when you are done resizing and moving things inward, save it as a full res .jpg. I keep a separate folder called "shutterfly" in each subdirectory, with the images that are ready for shutterfly.

Once I am truely "DONE" with an album, I keep all my files, .psd/.psp, and a 600x600 jpg and the shutterfly jpg. I put them all on a CD or DVD for storage. If I need the hard drive space, I will delete the .psd/.psp files off of my computer, leaving every 600x600 jpg, and the corresponding text file with credits, in case I post it at a later date somewhere. I also delete the shutterfly images off the hard drive.

HTH!
Fran

THANK YOU FRAN! Exactly what I wanted to know!
One follow-up question: if I save the psd/psp file onto a CD/DVD and delete it from my computer, and then I notice a problem on a LO, could I download the psp/psp from the cd/dvd and edit it? Let's say I print a book, and then a relative wants just one of the LOs for themselves but there is a spelling problem; could I still edit from the psp file off the disk? (I know this is more of a computer question and not a scrap book question -- sorry; for someone who digitally scraps, I am not very computer saavy!)

Good to know that Shutterfly is a slow program; luckily, I don't have a coupon (yet): I'll need to do a search for that.

Thanks again!

Suzi, yes, as long as you save the PSD in PSD format you can download it and fix it or change it. I do it with my PSP files all the time. (amazing you can check a billion times and still find a mistake later!) And I always, always, always burn my full size jpgs to DVD, make sure they work on a different computer before I delete them from my hard drive. Even if I have them printed. I'm a big believer in multiple back ups and preservation.

What do you mean 300x300? Pixels and dpi are not the same thing. You should be saving a 300dpi not 300x300 pixels.
When printing on a home printer, turn color correction off and print at 300dpi. Make sure you don't have color profiles in you program and your printer fighting each other. Turn one or the other off. Make sure you have the right kind of paper selected, it makes a huge difference. Honestly? It's cheaper and easier to have your stuff printed. When sending mine to be done they are just about perfect. At home (w/fairly nice printers) I waste more paper and ink trying to get it right it's just not worth it.

Sheri, what program do you use? I think all you have to do is get in your program and hit the little arrow that turns things like you would for a picture. Know what I mean? Like if you had a picture that is supposed to be portrait but it's landscape you'd just hit the arrow to make it right. Same to turn your template. If for some reason it will only do one layer at a time them just do each layer.

I use PSE6 and here's how a rotate:
go to "image" and click it (at the top next to "edit")
under the drop-down menu, go to "rotate"
here you will find various choices, such as turning the entire LO vs turning only the selected layers; you can turn them 90 or 180 degrees or just flip them horizontally or vertically.

On that particular template, you could just flip the entire thing 90 degrees to the right. If you want to just flip a couple layers, then hold down the control button and click on the layers you want to flip; then go to "image", then "rotate" and then choose which direction.

Hope that helps. Please feel free to ask if I need to clarify; I tend to get wordy :)

The downside is that it is not free ($30; but less if you wait for a sale) The upside is that these are video tutorials where you can watch and hear the process. You can watch these over and over. I am hoping to join in a online challenge over at SM and wanted to know if anyone could help with creating a photo mat and photo collage, I can seem to make it look right (I want it to be evenly spaced) I know there is a technique. Any tips are welcomed and appreciated. Here is the LO I want to use as inspiration. I have PSE6http://www.scrapmatters.com/gallery3/showphoto.php/photo/8465

thanks!

Sheri, I don't use PSE but I'm sure it must have some kind of grid. In PSP if I click on "view" I can check mark "grid" and it will put a grid over my LO. I use it to make pics the same size, to line them up evenly and I've started to use it to do my titles as well. Someone is sure to come along who can help more but for now see if you have something like that.
As far as the frame in that LO, most likely it's a storyboard. So have a look at the credits and then you can google the designer if you want that particular one.

I love those pre-made collages. I have downloaded some from www.scrapbooksetc.com. I've tried doing them but sometimes when I put the picture in and use the tool to resize the picture the picture comes out skewed. What am I doing wrong?

I finally have my WDW digital scrapbook pages complete, and am going through the process of getting them ready for print (i.e. resizing, saving as high res jpeg)...my problem is that I am halfway through my task and now when I try to save as jpeg, I get an error that they program has encountered an error...it happens every time now...I've even tried to re-install PSE...has anyone ever encountered this and/or have any suggestions? :confused3

Thanks!

Question for someone out there...I am using Photoshop and have been mildly successful using papers and all the typical process. I have tried using my first quick page. When I resize my picture to fit in the box, how do I get the layer to go behind the borders and decoration that's supposed to show around and on top of the picture? Any help for a newbie would be great?

I don't use PS but I think I can help. if your quick page has a back round layer just drag your photos in between the layers and then rearrange them until they are in the right spot.
If your QP is only a single layer then you have to create a back round layer. So go to file, "new" and punch in the size you're using (usually 12x12). Lay the quick page on top of that then photos in between them.
Hope this helps!

How do I know if a QP is a single or double layer?

Look in your layers palette. It should show two layers, your back round layer and your QP.

I just started with PSE 7. I either watched a tutorial or someone here helped, but for the quick pages (I hope I explain this right)...you click on the layer you want to add your picture to, then drag your photo onto that layer and then hit control G (to group with the layer) it sends the picture behind the frame you want and you can then resize or move the photo around to fit the frame better. I got PSE for Xmas and was sooo overwhelmed. There are alot of tutorials out there(free ones)..some I understood and some I did not. So once I found one or two I understood and played around some it was better. I am still no way near an expert, but I can build pages and do quick pages and I'll learn as I go. Best wishes. :o)

Got another question....I downloaded 6 quick pages and it looks like they are 8x8....how can I get these to 12x12 in Photoshop??? I'm so frustrated that the ad didn't say the size before I purchased.

Hmm.. if the qp's are 8x8, and they weren't disclosed anywhere on the package, (or description) then i would definately email the designer -- Are you sure they are 8x8?

Sadly, i think if they ARE in fact 8x8, you can't "upsize" them to 12x12 without loosing the quality - but i may be wrong in that..

I have my book ready for printing at Shutterfly...my question is with the covers/spine...I've downloaded and used the cover/spine from the Shutterfly webiste. After I've merged the layers and made a hi-res jpeg, I've copied the cover into the "book" on the shutterfly webiste...

1. my first problem is that the image is not the entire image when added into the "book"...it seems to be cropped a bit...I've done one other book and didn't run into this...did I do something wrong when I saved it?

2. my second problem is that they Shutterfly website doesn't want to allow me to add my spine...when I drag it into the "book", it pops back into the pictures area...I've tried to communicate my problem with Shutterfly help desk, but I'm not getting anywhere with them...can anyone here help me?

I've got 3 large books that are ready to print and I'd really like to take advantage of the sale going on now..

Thanks!

The templates from the Shutterfly site always need a lot of tweeking. Their "space" includes the part that will fold over the edges. Make sure that anything important like a picture or text is quite a bit moved over, so that it doesn't end up partially folded over.

I always have a ton of problems with the spine too, just keep deleting and retrying and eventually it will work. Of all the sites I've tried, their software can be the most irritating, but I love their books and prices, so we get the irritation in exchange!

Shutterfly has "specs" for all of their books. I, too, was so frustrated when I was working on my first online book at Shutterfly. Then someone told me about the specs and it was SO much easier. I'm only up to seven posts so far so I still can't post links. But if you go to Shutterfly and do a search on specs, it will bring up the page for you to choose which specs you want to see.

Regarding the question above about resizing an 8x8 page to 12x12 . . . When I first started designing the elements/backgrounds in my Disney-esque series, I made everything for an 8x8 page. I don't know why. Like I said, I had just started designing. LOL. Anyway, when a customer asked me if my pages could be resized to 12x12, I did my own quality check. I took elements and backgrounds from several of my kits, stretched them to fit on a 12x12 page, then took them to Sam's Club (where I take all my print jobs). I can say with certainty that there wasn't any noticeable loss of quality, and I'm big on quality!.

There are professional designers who argue that there is no noticeable difference between elements/backgrounds designed at 200 dpi as opposed to 300 dpi. It's just that the design standard has become 300 dpi and no one wants to veer away from that for fear people will think their designs are lesser quality.

When I contributed to a "how-to" digital design book a while back, we were asked to design at 200 dpi instead of 300 dpi. These were professionals who have written several books so I'm sure they know what they're doing. ;-)

But out of habit, I still even do my own layouts at 300 dpi. But it's also partly because that's the standard and it's easier to not have to resize all the elements.

Sorry to have written a "book" here. But those of you who may know me, know that I never say something in two sentences that I could write in five or six paragraphs! LOL.

Photoshop does not really know inches, it knows pixels. Inches without pixels per inch doesn't mean much anyway, so we are back to pixels. If the page has enough pixels it can be printed at 8x8, 12x12, or even larger.

Most printers will get maximum quality at somewhere between 240 and 300 ppi. More is just wasted, less is a decrease in quality. 200 is kind of low, the difference may not be noticeable but we are not getting maximum quality (on an inkjet printer, other types may need more or less ppi). As printers get better this may become more of an issue.

I set mine to 12x12 x 300 dpi so I know they will print at maximum quality. Btw, I print at home (Canon Pro 9000, Ilford Smooth Pearl).

Ok...I need help! I am very new to this and I really want to do it. I guess I need some type of program?? I can't just download stuff and put pictures in it without a program. Right?? I know a enough about using computers, but I dont understand all of the letters and intials. Is digital scrapping going to be over my head?? Should I stick to Shutterfly books??
If I do digital scrapbooking is it easier to print out 12x12 pages and put them into a book or just print out a book online??
Sorry for all the questions. I am a bit overwhelmed.:scared:

First, just take a deep breath. LOL. Start out simple and easy until you get the hang of it. Yes, you will need some kind of program. Most people that I know use Photoshop CS or Photoshop Elements. A lot of people also use Paintshop Pro I think it is. If you decide to go with Photoshop, I'd start with Photoshop Elements as it's much cheaper and less complicated.

A good way to start is with quick pages. These are pages that designers have made and sell (or you can find some free ones). The openings in the pages are transparent so that all you have to do is drop your photo behind the page layer, add some journaling and you're all done!

This seems like a really good group to ask questions of. Don't get frustrated, just ask questions.

Hi folks

My DF has just signed up as we are both now loving the Scrapbook Community!

I'm currently trying to access files via Photoshop Version 5 - I can open up the jpeg files as backgrounds but when I try and open any png files, select all of them and then try to add it on, I'm getting everything, including lots of white borders.

I'm sure I'm not doing something very basic so any guidance you can provide to help get me started would be fabulous!

Hi, I'm not new to paper scrapbooking but I really want to go digital! I have downloaded a trail version of PhotoShop Elements 7 (24 days left to decide). I'm really stupid when it comes to stuff like this, so I'm going to need someone to hold my hand while I learn this program, if thats ok with you all.

When I open Pse7, a window opens up with a girl with butterfly wings. On top there are 4 buttons (organize, edit, create, share). I understand that I can organize my photo and store them in this program but do I want too?

The Edit button is to fix or enhance my photos (I know that) but do I have to have my photos in the Organize part of this program to use the edit?

So when I have my photo's picked out and am ready to creat my layout I'll hit the create button, right? OK so pse 7 create opens up and it asked me "what would you like to create?". I plan on making ordering photobooks in the end, so do I click on Photo book, (I'm not making a calendar so I know i'm not using that one), or Photo Collage?

What do I do from here? I have manage to make two layout pages using photo collage but I'm not sure thats what I should be doing. Now, back to when I open pse7 the program brings up my two layouts that I have put together. What do I do with these if I want to start a new page. I can't figure out how to get these off my screen!!!

Thanks for the help.

I'm in PSE 5 so I can't totally help you, but I can offer out some knowledge for whatever it's worth.

I think a lot of people use a photo organizer because it makes it easier in the long run to find what you're looking for. I never got the hang of the PSE one and it made my computer, s l o w anyway, so I never did it. Sometimes I really, really wish I had started out with an organizer but at this point it's just too daunting an idea.

I don't use any of the suggestions for starting my new LO. I do File, New, Blank File. Then I do my picks which are for a 12X12, 300 dpi, transparent LO. I never really looked at the create option. Maybe I should have! LOL

As for how to make your older LO go away, I'm sorry I can't help you there. Mine doesn't do that. Must be a newer thing.

I hope I've helped you out somewhat anyway. Good luck!

to create your new layout you need to choose the edit option rather than create then choose file/blank file etc. as previously posted.

I have PSE6 which is a little different, but I can try to answer your remaining questions:
1. I create layouts in the edit mode just like Steno and momloveseeyore said.
2. If you want to order a photobook or collage through PSE, you will have to use the pre-made backgrounds and just add your photos into them. Then PSE somehow sends them to Kodak. At least this is how it works for PSE6. What I do is use my own background paper/embellishments/etc that I have purchased and create my own layout. Then I send it to Shutterfly for a digital photobook (there are other companies that do this, but with Kodak you have to use their pre-made pages)
3. When you have your 2 layouts open and you want to start a new page, you have 2 options: you could save your layouts and then close them OR you can minimize them and File>open a new document.

Your first LO is great! Keep going!!

Thanks so much for your help! I've made a couple more layouts but they are all basic like my first one. I downloaded a ton of free stuff but I think I'm going to buy a couple too. I've seen so many cute things online!!!! Maybe I should sell all my scrapbooking things and just go digital all the way. It's way faster than traditional.

One more question if you all don't mine. How do I jourinal on my pages?

Please ask all the questions you would like; I owe my knowledge to the ladies from DIS so I am happy to help someone else. To journal: there should be a side bar that has a "T" on it (probably for "text") Click on it. Then a bar will appear on the top where you can choose font, size, center vs left/right align etc. Then click wherever you would like your text to appear and start typing. If you would like to type into a text box, click and hold with the left side of your mouse and drag down a box. You can then use the side arrows to change the shape of your box.

dafont.com has tons of free fonts. Fonts for Peas is another site that has free sites (I particularly like this site)

Another thing to try on your LOs is shadowing. Look at the "effects" palate on the right side of your screen. There should be a drop-down box called drop shadows. You can choose which shadow you want and that click "apply" (make sure the layer that you want to have the shadow is selected first) This will add some extra dimension to your LO. Want to go another step? After applying the shadow, double click on the blue "fx" that is on the selected layer. A pop-up box will appear and you can change the color, size of your shadow.

Are you addicted yet? :)
