I just thought I'd start a thread where everybody can post their storm photos. I am fascinated with severe storms, so I'd love to see all your photos! Have fun! Here are a few to start us off!

I think I may brighten this one a bit...
I saw this sky forming while driving on hwy 55 in southern illinois. Pulled over and shot.

How did you get all the shots of the lightening? Just a quick trigger finger on an SLR? Was it just a huge storm and you had a super slow shutter to get it? The look great, both of you!

Mikeeee That's an awesome shot! Great capture! :thumbsup2 I don't think you need to brighten it, it looks pretty menacing as it is.

Yeah, I just had a slow shutter to get it. I had it set for 2 seconds. Trust me I don't have a quick trigger finger. ;) Thanks for the complements! :)

From my kitchen window May, 2007. Both of these tornado looking storms were most likely roll clouds with a drop down. I got that info from the National Weather Service.

I love storm pics! This one DD15 took last week (and it was taken at 9am!):
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d154/pennie14/May2007016.jpg
She took this one at the same time. It's the weeping willow tree behind our house. I had been playing with the f-stop and ISO, but she didn't know she needed to change it back. I thought this turned out to be a really cool picture!:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d154/pennie14/May2007025.jpg
And this one I took two years ago as we were flying out of Fort Walton Beach, FL just as the very outer bands of Hurricane Katrina were approaching:

this was an odd storm that literally lasted about 5 mins of black clouds with blue sky on both sides. it came up in just a few mins as well:confused: it was just really strong wind when it was over me but then i think rained a little farther east but never did anything else

totally ot but there is a quiz on being a storm spotter on http://www.weathernet5.com/stormspotter/index.html
that shows different clouds and what they produce..interesting.

Clouds from the small storms that popped up here yesterday. They say it was our last day of rain for a while. I hope so, we have had well above average rainfall and my yard is flooded (along with many others in the area)

Thanks folks! Great "Big Sky" in the land of enchantment!!
I did have a circular polarizer on. The skies were even more impressive in person since the camera does tend to lose the 3D effect that we see.

I LOVE this thread.
We saw some amazing storms building while at Disney the past week and a half. I took a few pics of one particular updraft as we were leaving Epcot. It is still a raw file though - not sure when I will have it ready to post.
Then yesterday as we were driving through Louisianna we saw some more amazing cloud formations - but the camera was packed in the back of the van and I didn't have the heart to make my girls dig around back there for me.
DH and I are storm spotters for Dallas county and get called out every time there is a severe storm heading for us. It is kind of a bummer though because we are right under the storms and I have a hard time getting great shots that way.
We have talked about driving around and doing some unofficial chasing from time to time - but just haven't yet.

wow these are all great! i love the lightning ones. we've had some wicked bad storms around here lately, but i've been too chicken to get out and shoot the lightning. i should try it now, since i finally got my new tripod in. there was even this one beautiful shot i wanted to get there was a rainbow in the foreground and tons of lightning going on in the background when i was stopped at a light, unfortunately i didn't have my camera on me at the time. i guess that's just telling me i should always carry it with me, huh?

Very cool - I love to watch the clouds roll in before the storms.
I am definitely adding NM to the places I want to visit in the near future. I had family that live there, but never had the opportunity to visit.
Once Tara and I leave Orlando and don't take vacations when people visit us, we will get to start traveling a bit more again!

so are you saying when you know someone is coming you go someplace else on vacation so you don't have to visit with them and take them to wdw?;) :lmao:
( i know you mean you use up your vacation time with visitors coming to see you but just couldn't resist. if i lived any place anyone would want to visit i might be tempted do what i said after a couple on months of visitors:))

I took this on 6/18. There were thunderstorms all around us and they send out these roll clouds from time to time.
http://pic18.picturetrail.com/VOL910/465229/16385339/260516904.jpg
Roll clouds are completely unattached from a parent storm cloud. This is what makes it distinctly different looking compared to a wall cloud or a shelf cloud. A roll cloud is long and tubular and appears to be "rolling" along a horizontal axis. Although you may think it looks like a tornado turned horizontal, it is not associated with tornadoes at all.
Most impressive! :teeth:

The storm was actually way in the distance so no chance of it hitting. If it did, it would hit those very tall lightening rods and no one would really notice.
Thanks for all the nice comments. Will post a couple more when I have time.

I've gotten a couple, but they were just luck!! I set the camera (on the tripod) and with a longer exposure that night requires, just kept releasing the shutter until I got something. A bit frustrating, since some great bolts were missed. Good thing it's digital!!

No one has a fast enough trigger finger. You just have to set your camera up and keep shooting. It works best when it is a real storm with lots of strikes rather than an occasional strike. You also don't want too long of an exposure because with a long exposure the strike won't show up unless it comes at the end of the exposure. The one I shot was at f/5.0 for 6 seconds. The strike came toward the end of the exposure. If you notice the lit up area in the clouds, there was alot going on up there but it ended up just being light, not a bolt.

Blue Ridge Parkway, Waterrock Knob
The storm was climbing up and over the Blue Ridge but we thought we could make it to the top of Waterrock Knob (1/2 mile trail) before it really hit. The first good crack of lightning let us know it was time to turn back.
Hmm, we were on the highest peak in the area, what could go wrong?

First I want to say I love this thread. The pics are amazing and I have enjoyed every one of them! I have some pics to add, even though no where as impressive as the ones I have seen.

Persistence finally paid off. I caught this lightning last night from a storm that was raging on due south of us.

Here's a system that tracked just east of us last month...

A few minutes later, a second, smaller storm popped up between us and the first storm. The pure white clouds are several miles further distant than the tan-colored clouds.

i posted this in the photos near you thread, but it's pretty appropriate to this one, too. we have been hit with a lot of storms these last three weeks. the Pasha Bulker, a Philippine coal ship, ran aground after being pushed by the wind and waves. :headache:  :confused3

I think that's a fantastic photo. The gulls in the bottom right corner made me smile -- all that drama and they're busy pecking.

I was so inspired by this thread that I've been waiting for a good summer storm to come along so I can try my hand at getting some lightning shots - it's a heck of a lot harder than you think! My "trigger finger" must be pretty slow - haha - I'm sure the neighbors thought we were nuts when we came outside and sat down with a camera and a tripod - LOL - here are a few from last night (I took nearly 400 shots - thank goodness for digital cameras! The last picture of the big bolt was my very last photo - I figured I had been successful so we booked it back into the house after that - LOL
Some sheet lightning -

I can't figure out how to "quote" my photo - LOL - but for the lightning shots I took - I used a tripod and put the camera on "continuous shot" and when I thought something was coming - I just held my finger on the picture taking button and got really lucky - I think I took over 500 pictures over the course of maybe 15 minutes - LOL I have a Canon S3. No way could my old Sony DSC-W1 have done this!

This is from a storm that is coiming over the mountains right now, into Tennessee from North Carolina. I am in Tennessee, over these mountains is North Carolina. No lightening yet, but I can hear a lot of rumbling going on, you can see the rain on the mountains, and the wind is picking up. Not a great photo, I wish the tree wasn't in the photo.

Here is the same view on a sunny day. The tree to the far right in this one is the one that is in the middle of the first one.

In San Diego, we rarely have inclement weather, so when we had the remenents of Hurricane Dean move through, we had some exciting weather. Woke up to lots of thunder and lightning and over 2 inches of rain in an hour.

Thanks! I don't know why it turned out purple, though! I was hoping for some "forked" lightning, but I was glad to get anything. It's raining cats & dogs here today, too. And of course, it's the day that I have off and could actually go outside by myself to try out my new lens!

Thanks! You don't know about the 100 shots of blackness that I also took!:lmao:
