View Full Version : Waving ???

So while we were staying at FW we noticed that everyone waves to everyone else. Why do you think that is?

After our 5 nights at FW we moved over to the Beach Club. People were very nice there as well, and we've stayed at Movies and Carribean Beach. But people just seemed more friendly at FW.

Every time we passed an employee they waved, said hello, just seemed extra friendly.

You'll find that at pretty much any campground you go to! Campers, in general, are a very friendly bunch! :goodvibes

I was going to say the same thing. You always find that when camping. It's kind of funny because when the kids were young of course we told them the usual.. "never to talk to strangers". Only when you camp, everyone say's hello or waves. We'd get.."why are you waving to the stranger?".

I don't know if you've seen it, but there is a commercial on tv for boating. It's very similiar. A family waving..and everyone just sort of looks at them as if they are crazy. Then you see them on the water in the boat, another boat passes and they are waving to one another. It's kind of funny. I did find that when we had our boat, boaters were the same as campers...they are both "wavers"!

Well we may just need to add camping to our vacationing list. This was our first time at FW and we've never camped with our kids or been camping ourselves since we were kids.

I was telling DH while we were there we need to look into getting and RV, maybe renting one and seeing if we like it. Some of them looked really nice from the outside.

I don't think how much money someone's rig costs has anything to do with how friendly they are. It has to do with the person and how they were raised.

If people can afford expensive campers, so be it. No need to hate on them because of it :(

And yes, campers in general seem to be more friendly, but I think it just kind of goes with the territory. Fort Wilderness is a more open and personal place than a hotel room, so even if you don't want to be you're kind of forced into being friendly...lol.

We just got back yesterday and I have to say that camping takes my DH down numerous levels on the stress meter. We both grew up camping but made our first trip together this weekend in the new RV. My DH was waving and smiling and completely chilled out. He didn't sit in front of the TV but sat outside in the fresh air drinking his morning coffee. If there was a wait or a problem, hey no worries. What would normally stress him out, didn't. :thumbsup2

Only problem...he now wants to buy a golf cart!

That's not a problem, that's a victory! More golf carts for all!

We really need to get one ourselves, I feel the time is coming soon!

ChrisAlli
05-30-2007, 12:50 PM
We did see some really neat golf carts while there.

And the stress metor was always way down, we were very said to leave. My DH was not expecting it to be so nice. We were moving to the Beach Club and DH was seriously considering seeing if we could keep staying at FW.

I never knew only poor people were friendly, the things you learn every day...lol

So if you're poor to start with, and have a really good job or inherit a boat load of money or something, do you automatically become unfriendly or is it something you have to do consciously?:confused3

They are not waving they are shooing the mosqitos away. j/k

I found that certain niche clubs wave to each other, like they are in on a secret. Jeeps, Corvettes, Boats, Campers, Motorcylcists,Mustangs and I'm sure a few others tend to wave as they pass each other.

Well, it sounds like it happens automatically. I think I'm a very friendly guy, I wave at people, I smile, laugh, enjoy and love life, and love to make people happy. But if I win the lottery tomorrow, it sounds like all of a sudden I won't be that person anymore.

I guess I'll somehow instantly turn into a miserable grouch that yells at kids to get off his lawn and flicks people off while driving around in my Prevost...lol.

No see, you misunderstand, if you drive a Corvette or own a boat, there is no way you should be waving at someone because that means you have money, and those kind of people aren't friendly!!!!!! ;)

Ok, I'll stop now, but at least hopefully the point has been made...heh :P

Wow, I couldn't tell the income level of anyone waving or saying Hi and I have no idea what a Pivost, Provost Donna whatever is.

It was just really interesting to have so many people wave, say hi, make small talk. Like I said at the other Disney resorts we've stayed at people are nice, but at FW, everyone seemed in a good mood and all CM always said hello and waved.

The only unhappy person we saw was the lady at the front desk complaining about the 6 small barking dogs next to her site, apparently it wasn't a pet loop.

School bus drivers are wavers too. They wave to each other whenever they encounter another school bus. I used to drive a school bus and really enjoyed the interaction between the bus drivers. Then I would get in my van and forget I wasn't in the bus any longer, wave to a bus driver and have them look at me like I was nuts.....hehe.

To be honest, you don't see those Prevost owners outside as much as you do the smaller rigs. They are probably too comfortable sitting inside in their climate controlled RV's drinking Dom out of crystal and watching Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous on their 42 inch big screens to come outside. :rotfl:

We have a corvette and yes we wave to other corvettes. It is like you are all in one big club.
We have a boat and we wave to other boats. That is just something I have been taught since I was a little kid.
We even wave at other Rvers.
I don't think it has anything to do with having a lot of money or not. Some people are just friendlier than others. Some are mad at the world. It is the way it goes. If everyone would be nicer the world would be a better place.

I love the pic of the inside of that RV. WOW! I don't think I would come out much either. Of course I will never have to worry about it cause we will never be able to afford anything like that. I will just be happy to own a Class A someday so we can have a little more room. We have a Class C right now.

I guess big RV's are nice, but I like my hybrid. I go camping to be in the outdoors, not sit inside and watch TV. The hybrid sort of forces everyone out, since it is too small inside to really hang out unless it's raining. If I want a nice place inside to watch a big screen TV, I'll stay home. I also enjoy the challenge of showering in the hybrid, which has become more challenging as I have gotten "larger" (or the shower in the trailer has become smaller).

I don't think people that can afford 1.3 million campers really care about taxes and insurance ;)

Like Donna said, can we go back to not harping on rich people now? :P

And I think Ft. Wilderness guy does have a point, smaller campers have a tendency to probably be outside more, but once again, it depends on the PERSON. You can have a small camper and want to spend all your time inside, and have a large camper and want to spend all your time outside. It just depends on your personality.

When we go with my parents, we have a tendency to stay outside, but my dad spends a lot of time inside. And he's a friendly person ;)

I wonder if Donald Trump has a camper? Would he hang around outside with a beer and his trophy wife with their designer dogs? Would he be happy parked next to me in the 1600 loop? Hey, I wonder if he would use the poopie bags to clean up after his dog? I wonder if he would shower in the comfort stations - I sure would like to see his hair after a shower. I bet he would come over for a Kungaloosh if I asked him nicely. Know what would be cool? If the Donald parked on one side of me and somebody like Bill Gates was on the other side. I bet Bill would have a wireless network I could tap into and check my email. Bill looks like a beer drinker to me, but probably the imported stuff. I could stock up for my next trip, though.

Off the top of my head, Ewan McGregor rode his motor bike around the world and camped in lots of places.

I don't get where people are thinking celebrities aren't normal people like the rest of us. And lots of them weren't famous all their lives either, and probaby some of them grew up camping with their families.

It's the same as with the general population. MOST non-celebrities/non-rich people out there don't camp, and would never think about being in a tent. Only a small part of the general population actually enjoy camping, and even less in a tent. Same holds true for the celebrity/rich crowd. Most of them probably won't camp, but I'm sure a few of them do :)

I don't think people that can afford 1.3 million campers really care about taxes and insurance

Ok folks, what millionaire actress said:

:snooty: " Only the poor people pay taxes " :snooty:

We can see if these folks wave.

Motor Mansions 2 on HGTV 9pm EDT Sunday June 3.

In Motor Mansions, HGTV burned up the pavement exploring the jaw-dropping world of multimillion dollar luxury coaches. Unbelievably, the market for these mega-mobiles, the largest of which can be listed as a second home, just keeps growing. Motor Mansions II revs it up again with a whole new breed, decked out with cutting-edge technologies and custom-made edgy designs. Motor-head engineers push it into overdrive with innovations for this money's-no-object approach to home, sweet home on the road

ChrisAlli,
To you original post, I'm glad that going to FW has inspired you to look into camping! I never camped until I married my husband and also immediately noticed how people tend to wave or smile and say "Hi" to each other at the campgrounds. It's just my theory, but I've always found I have an instant camaraderie with my fellow campers because we obviously both enjoy the experience, are sharing in the same weather, same sunrise, same bugs or other nuisances ;)... Also, (and my experience is as a tent camper) you tend to see your fellow campers alot more than in a hotel, so you can either just pretend to ignore each other awkwardly or be friends. :) And when we're talking about people that are going to see you in the mornings when you're not quite groomed yet, or even staying somewhere with no showers where everyone is looking a little thrown together after a couple of days...I'd rather be friendly. :goodvibes

One of the reasons I think so many (including myself) are drawn to camping is because of the other thing you noticed about your husband. When there is no TV, no radio, no clocks in your face, no computer :upsidedow .... life gets much more simple, and slows down, and you can... just breathe... My stress level almost always drops as soon as we get to the campsite. And isn't that much of what "getting away" is really all about? Resting and relaxing?

I'm glad to know these same things remain true at FW. We are planning our first FW trip for the fall and I have wondered if this was still true at "commercial" campsites (we usually stay at national parks, recreational areas, etc.)

Welcome to the world of camping! :wave2:
