We're leaving early Saturday morning, and I'm frantic! I got my pennies (for penny press machines) nice and clean with vinegar and ammonia, but they are very dull. Does anyone know what will make them shiny? Gotta take some pressed pennies back as a souviner for my son's collection! Thanks all!

You could scuff them ever so lightly with steel wool or just go to the bank and ask for new pennies.

You can't use new pennies. They have to be pre 1982. After 1982 they started putting some kind of alloy in them, and they don't press as well in the machines. Any one else?

My son is working on a school science project and on his list was "which fruit juice will make a penny the shiniest?" I assume this means that one of the fruit juices will, but I am not sure which specific one since he chose to do another project. You could try different ones and see if this works. Let us know if you do because I am curious also.

The best thing is to put them in "Daddies Brown Sauce". The vinegar cleans the penny but the sauce really clings to it so they get shiny

Brasso is the best, but if you don't have time to run out and buy some and you don't have it around the house, try adding *salt* to the vinegar. Put the pennies in a bowl, sprinkle with salt and add vinegar. It's kind of hit or miss, but most will come out shiny.

DH says polish them when you get home.

I used an eraser on them before we went in november. I used one of the white block style artists erasers, and all of the gunk came off of them and they were shiny like new!

Believe it or not, the most amazing thing I learned one day in high school (may years ago) was to put pennies in pork n beans. Let them sit for awhile and you won't even have to polish them, they will be shiny!!!!!!!!

I haven't tried this since then, so maybe I don't want to know what they put in the beans back then.... :D

Great advice about the year of the penny..... I'll have to look through my pennies....

Thanks,
