This is the "World" map that hung in every guest room both in the Poly and the Contemp. It measured approx 4 x 5 feet, and appears to be vinyl bonded onto masonite. During the rehab of the Contemp (about 1985 and/or 1986), the maps were ripped off the walls and thrown into trash piles. Many were destroyed or ruined, and they were sold off as scrap masonite for $5.00 each!
Years ago I saw one on eBay for $10,000 but it didn't get a bid. I wonder if it would today?
Notice the locations of the Venetian, Asian and Persian Hotels that were never built.
Also from flyinglizard: The "World" map . . . would eventually be ripped off the walls and sold for scrap masonite for $5.00! Most were heavily damaged in the removal process and all the frames were destroyed.
and
. . . Inside a Contemp room... the "map" picture on the right is now a "holy grail" to park collectors and probably would bring thousands of $$$... if you could find one! It measured 4 by 5 feet.
Sorry I've come so late to this thread but just found out about it from my friend Sharon (Pugsly) as we had lunch at Nine Dragons in the World Showcase this past Saturday. She had seen a photo of one of my treasures posted this past spring on the Disney @ Home thread on the UK Community Board and recognized it from the photos posted here by flyinglizard. It seems that it is my good fortune to be the caretaker of the Holy Grail. Here it is as it hangs in my home with the explanation as to how it is that it came into the hands of my late husband Scott. I wrote to Dave Smith, Disney Archivist, a few years back asking him how many of these maps survived the Contemporary refurb. He told me that "some were sold to cast members and collectors at Disneyana Conventions and others can still be found on the walls in various office around Walt Disney World, but the vast majority was destoryed. There is no way of knowing how many still exist, but I would guess that it would not be a great number."

As posted on the Disney @ Home thread:
One more from the office: A map of the Magic Kingdom and Bay Lake--as it NEVER was. This was a room decoration in the Contemporary when it first opened and was the concept the Imagineers intended to develop. Many things were never done. For instance, locate where the Grand Floridian should be and you'll see a drawing of something very Asian. Directly across the lake from it there's another resort where there is none to this day. On the lakeshore just next to Autopia (or whatever they call it these days) there's a Taj Mahal looking resort. I hope you can see the detail well enough to see those and to spot other things that never materialized. Scott actually rescued this piece when he was walking back to the Contemporary many, many years ago and came upon some maintenance men breaking these and putting the pieces in a dumpster (the rooms were being remodeled). When he asked if he could buy one, Housekeeping gave him this one and all he had to do was arrange for it to be packed and shipped. It is a favorite among my favorites--as much for Scott's action as for the piece itself.

I remember that map!! I think there was supposed to be a Cypress Point resort as well. I remember the others that were supposed to be as well. Nice picture and story. Thanks for sharing. I wish I had some of the old tickets (I probably do someplace) and guides.

Thanks for sharing your story here, Susan - it never gets old hearing it.
By the way, Evan will be ecstatic to know that you have framed a pic of him/the Stringers from our 2004 trip in your office!

Main Street USA 1971. I was 7 years old. My mom won a trip right when MK opened. I remember the promotional company paid for us to stay in Tampa and drive over. I didn't go back until late '80's. DH had also only been like one time. Since we married in '91 we're making up for lost time! :lmao:

OMG! This thread is awesome. And has successfully distracted me for about 1/2 hour while I should've been doing homework! Oh well, this is great! I wish there were more pics of GF, though. I grew up staying there and it just IS Disney World to me. Those pictures from 1990 look so old but that doesn't sound like that long ago! OK, I think I'm getting old...
I'll try to dig up some pictures from my first trips as a little kid in the early 90's!

I had been posting these on my most recent pre-trip report and someone suggested that I post them over here. Most of the pics I have are of the parks, but I had scanned a few of the resorts. When I was a kid we always stayed at the the Poly. I wish I could afford to stay there these days too. :)
From 1979 my brother and I with a few tiki statues -
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z126/Seastorm2/PolyTotemsUnknown_opt.jpg
From 1981 at the Poly pool. They used to have the characters waterski up to the resort. Somewhere I have a pic of Goofy on waterskis. I'll have to look for it. In the second one you can see that there is no GF on the other side of the lake.

From 1981 - A shot of the Contemporary - you can see lots of people swimming in the lake behind us.

More from 1981 - The beach at the Poly. Swimming was still allowed here then - you can see the lifeguard stand.

Great pictures Thank you! Some one must know why Disney doesn't allow swimming in the lakes any more. Curious....:upsidedow
I've heard various reasons for no swimming in the lake, but I don't think any have ever been confirmed:
bacteria/microorganisms
gators
people going out too far with boat traffic
According to the Birnbaum guides, the reason for not allowing swimming is because of the significant amount of boat traffic on both lakes.

Love all of these pics! I will have to get in my mother's attic the next time that I visit! We stayed at the Poly in '78 and '80. I was enchanted by all of the Disney magic, so I asked my mom how much it cost (surely it was priceless). She told me it was about $100 per night, but that included tickets for the 4 of us and our coupon book. (Meals, River Country, Hoopdeedoo) LOL!

What a treasure from your father! If you've looked through this very long thread you may have seen my wall version of the map that's in your guide book in my posting (#251). I have a fair idea of what is on my map but I've never seen anything in print that details the things on the map like your guide book does. I can just about read all of the guide text. You did an amazing job, photographing and focusing at that distance. I am wondering if there's any more text explaining the map on other pages. Thank you very much for providing this information. I'm loving all the pic's!! I've only been to WDW once, and it was in September 1990 when I was 13. My dad's company had a villa of some kind that you could get for FREE that was on property, you just had to sign-up. It came with FREE tickets to MK, Epcot, and whatever DHS was called back then. So my parents, me, my sister, my brother, and my uncle (he had the frequent flyer tickets!) all went for about 5 days. The townhouse/villa had 2 levels, downstairs there was a 1/2 bath, full kitchen, living room (with a pull-out sofa), and dining room (with a murphy bed that pulled out of the wall that I slept on). Upstairs there were 2 bedrooms, one was a loft overlooking the area downstairs and I can't remember if there was two bathrooms or one? I remember that you could see fireworks from there at night, and for some reason I think it was near like Pleasure Island or something like that? I completely remember riding the monorail through the Contemporary. Does anyone know where this would have been?
We're taking our daughter for the first time this year for her first birthday (and our son will have just turned 1)...20 years after I went the first time!

It sounds like you're talking about The Disney Village Resort/Disney Institute. It was demolished and replaced with Saratoga Springs. There's a photo of one of the townhouses in post #308.

Here is my first time at Disney World circa 1978. I was 3 at the time and we stayed at Poly. The wife and I are taking my kids for the first time in September and staying there. For my wifes first time to Disney (I think 1981) they stayed at Poly too. Kind of a family tradition, if anyone is going for the first time, we stay at Poly.
Anyway, on to the pictures.
In font of a store in MK. Does anybody know where? I'd like to know so I can take a "now" picture.

I beleive that's the old Magic Shop. They sold magic tricks and practical jokes along with the coolest halloween masks. We'd get one every year. It was by far my favorite shop in the MK. Alas, it does not exist anymore. I thought it was on Main St. but the reflections in the pic make it seem like it was near the castle. Maybe where the Tinkerbell shop was/is by the backside of the castle.

Good call on Sir Mickey's. Here's a current shot I found online. Looks like they've since added some landscaping in front of the window.

That is funny that they built a planter out front... did too many people walk through the window?!?

i'm not exactly sure if this is Wilderness lodge or not because if it is i can't figure out where it would have been taken from.
it's from the late 70's very early 80's and it's out of place with a bunch of pictures from 1980 but i'm going to post it anyways and if it's not someone can let me know and i'll remove it from the slide cube.

Kurby, that is definitely not Wilderness Lodge, I don't think it is Fort Wilderness either. FW hasn't changed much since 1972 and I don't remember the sites looking like that, or where you would be able to get a "bird's eyeview" picture like that. Where else did you camp? Maybe the pics is from another vacation.

well we had a motorhome for 8 years and went all across Canada and the States.
i seems to be the loan camping photo in a stack marked 1981 and that was the year we went to disney.
it's more likely that it's miss placed since i've just found one of the Disney and so far i haven't found our camp site.
actually i just said to mom you'd never know we were even there since we're not even in any of the pics LOL

Although the campground looks very nice & exceptionally well kept don't think that's fort wilderness... the sites seem to be too close together, I don't recall a log at the end of each site. Another question... where in the world would that photo have been taken from?
Editing to add: Second glance, this could be FW... I hate to admit but I've camped in over a hundred campgrounds as a child/teen and the roadways were always memorable. FW had the best paved roads of any campground for biking.
You could post this over in the campground forum & see if anyone there recognizes it from FW or another campground.

I'm going to agree with your DH. The bend in the road has a guard rail because the land drops off there.... I can see the tree trunks are lower. FL is pretty flat in the Disney area, the hills start just west and north of the area.

There was a lot more vegetation between the sites at FW back then. There were no logs at the ends of the sites. I spent a lot of time at FW from around '78 - '85!

I've actually tried to do a bit of research in that past on the history of the Golf Resort/Disney Inn/Shande of Green. It's the only on-site resort I've ever stayed at. Once as the Golf resort in 1979, and once as the Shades of Green in 2008 (will be there again this summer). For anyone interested, here's some of the history that I was able to paste together:
History of the Shades of Green on Walt Disney World Resort
When the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom opened in October of 1971, two championship golf courses opened nearby, the Magnolia and the Palm. On December 15, 1973, at the site of the courses’ club house, The Golf Resort opened with 125 guest rooms and a swimming pool, the Magnolia Pool. A restaurant called the Magnolia Room was known for their French Fried Ice Cream dessert. The Players Lounge was overlooking the Magnolia Golf Course.
On February 1, 1986, the resort was reopened under a new name, The Disney Inn, and with a new theme, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The resort had been renovated and expanded to 288 rooms, and added a second swimming pool, the Mill Pond Pool. The Garden Gallery restaurant opened along with The Back Porch, a snack bar called the Diamond Mine, and a poolside bar called the Sand Trap.
In 1989, a third golf course was added next to the Magnolia course. The Oak Trail golf course is a nine-hole, par-36 walking course.
The U.S. Military began leasing the property on February 1, 1994, and started offering it’s rooms exclusively to U.S. service members and their families and various other categories of Department of Defense employees as part of their Morale, Welfare and Recreation program. On January 12, 1996, the Department of Defense purchased the resort and renamed it Shades of Green.*
After continued occupancy rates in the 90-99% range, on January 4, 2002, Shades of Green announced a major remodeling and expansion project. On April 1, 2002, the resort closed for construction. During the closure, guests with reservations were accommodated at the Contemporary Resort’s North Garden Wing (their reservation rates were honored, but they were charge an additional 11% sales tax). The Shades of Green ticket office was also temporarily moved to the Contemporary Resort.
On March 31, 2004, Shades of Green re-opened with 586 guest rooms, a new lobby area, a new ball room, a new signature restaurant called Manginos, a new parking garage, and new landscaping. The Garden Gallery was preserved, and other new dining and shopping options opened: Evergreens Sports Bar and Grill, Express Café, Eagles Lounge, Lava Café, America the Ice Cream Parlour, and AAFES convenience store, and an Armed Forces Recreation Center gift shop called East Meets West.
* I found conflicting accounts on this: one report says the U.S. Military paid $43 million for a 100-year lease from Disney in 1996.
I'd love to see any photos of the Shades of Green before it was Shades of Green. My parents can't find any photos from our Golf Resort stay, and I've never been able to find much of anything from the Disney Inn days.
I have a glossy "coffee table" book of Disney that was printed in the late 80's. It shows photos of The Disney Inn and everything else that was there at that time. Its the oddest book, in that it is the ONLY book I've ever seen without a library of congress catalog number or any copywrite date at all. However, I either bought it in 1984 or 1990 as that is the closest dates that I was there to when the books appears to have been written.
thanks to everyone who posted. I see I was not crazy for remembering that people swam in the lakes! I have no photo from my childhood visits because my dad always did slides, and I have no idea whatever became of them. My parents and grandparents are all gone now. For some reason, when I visited with a friend in 1984, in college, we didn't bring a camera!? What were we thinking. I have no photos until my first family trip with DH and my oldest DD in 1990 when she was 2.

Whoa. That book sounds awesome. When I was a kid, our parents took me and my brother to the Disney Inn. We usually stayed in Value Resorts, but it seems like I remember Disney calling my Dad and offering us an upgrade.
We had a room right on a beautiful fairway on the ground level. I was absolutely enthralled with this little resort. Mainly because I had been so infatuated with the Seven Dwarves mythology. It was very nice and I recall the bunnies being so tame as they would come right up to our sliding glass doors. It had sort of a rustic feel with dimly lit hallways and such; it was awesome.
We would've visited right around 1990, I guess. I remember when we first pulled up, and I saw the resort sign with Sleepy on it (I think) yawning carrying a little candle and wearing a night cap.(guess that would have to be Sleepy!) That excited me to no end!
But sorry, I don't have pictures...

Oh, well maybe not then. We usually stayed at CBR...which I now realize is a moderate. I'm a dumb dumb, thanks for the correction!
It seemed like we did get some sort of call, though. Was Disney Inn also considered a moderate? Maybe they just needed to move us for some reason. Or maybe my Dad just told me it was an upgrade...

Wow... that's interesting. My glossy book with no copyright was probably written in the late 80's because it included The Disney Inn, Caribbean Beach, The Disney Village and the Disney Marketplace, River Country, the segment on MK includes the Sky Way thingie and 20,000 Leagues, AND MGM Studios. The only trip I made to Disney (I know :scared1:) between 1984 and 2000 was in March 1990. So, that would make the book written in late 80's. Probably right after MGM opened. The pictures have to be a stand in for family pics I don't have anymore. I wish my I knew whatever happened to my father's slides that he would have taken of our trips in the early 70's. I never even got to stay ON property until our family trip with my kids in 2005. Now I wouldn't want to do it any other way!:dance3:

According to a thread I was reading the other day, CBR opened on Oct. 1, 1988. I know that MGM opened on May 1, 1989 and we stayed at CBR for a week starting on May 5, 1989. We were young with 2 small children and we were so happy that they had built a "value" resort that we could afford. I wish I could remember what we paid per night. I do remember that after a few days we wanted to add an extra night to our trip but they were fully booked up, so we had to go offsite for the last night.

We stayed at CBR on our honeymoon back in June of 1991. I remember we paid $89 a night and for us (just young kids back then) it felt like a lot of money.
Best part of all was that for the second week of our honeymoon trip we stayed at the GF and got a special "Honeymoon Rate" of $175 a night for a lagoon view room. I laugh when I think about how expensive that sounded back then. $175 for Disney's flagship deluxe resort!!
And I remember how boring MGH Studios was back then. Just a lot of production type rides like "Sounds Dangerous". Too funny.

I don't actually know, but thanks for asking. My wife's aunt (closest to the camera) was a special ed teacher in Wisconsin and that was one of her students. She taught many of the students songs and they would go around to sing in concerts. They were there to perform at the Magic Kingdom as part of Disney's Magical Music Days and so we went to visit her and listen to the children.

Just try to google photos for Papeete Bay Verandah. There are none. I'm sure there are some photos out there. I'd love to see more.

Wow... how very special and so Disney. Your wife's aunt must be a very special person. I just found that child's face so engaging and charming. I don't know why. You just want to give him/or her (can't really tell) a hug!

Someday, they'll be vintage. And people will laugh at the clothes we are wearing, too! :)

This isn't exactly "vintage" but interesting. It's from 1996, we're standing at the dock for the boat launch at the Yacht & Beach Club. Looking across you can see the Boardwalk being built!

I seriously just went through my parents pictures from their trips to Disney in the mid 70s yesterday! It started with me being  when told my dad actaully went on SpaceMoutain (he is the biggest wimp ever! Doesn't even like ferris wheels!!) and how there was a picture of him "praying" after he got off... so I went to find it, which lead to about an hour hunt for the picture! Found pictures from their second trip as well as the tour book and such.
I will try and put them up later, I don't have a scanner, but hopefully taking a picture of it will work. (and we did eventually find the picture of my dad, but it's on the slides so won't be abe to put those up...)

Those darned slides. Slides are the reason I have no pictures of our family trips to Disney in the early to mid 70's!! I have NO idea whatever happened to the slides after my parents passed away. I remember seeing a box of slide carousels, but have no idea what became of it. There was so much stuff. I really wish we had those pics. Slides can be scanned... if I had them.:sad2:

Aww that sucks Mindy... hope you can find them someday! Yah there are lots of slide scanners out there now, I thought we had bought one actually, but we had just borrowed it from a friend and it didnt work on our computers! :confused3
Anyway I took some pictures of the stuff my parents had! They went during Christmas time so it was all decorated...

I may not have our photos, but I actually have the stuffed Minnie Mouse my parents bought me, and my sister has her Mickey. Mickey was wearing a Mickey Mouse Club shirt. Minnie's dress dry-rotted so she is naked!!
I couldn't help but notice a tanker overturned in the Delaware but it was slightly smaller news than capacity crowds at Disney!!:lmao:

Yeah... it worked!!! I wonder if "Golf Resort" is the Resort now known as Shades of Green. That was the Disney Inn, which was a golf resort. I have an old hard cover Disney coffee table glossy that includes the Disney Inn, The Disney Marketplace Village and The Treehouse Villas and the Disney Village. It also includes River Country. I think I must have gotten it in 1990 during our March trip because it does have MGM Studios but not the big sorcerer's hat.
Here's the one page that still appeared as a link.

Yeah I have noticed the differences to Mickey over the years, I started to take notice after watching footage from the opening of Tokyo Disneyland.
Personally the old Mickey Mouse looks kinda scary to me, but I think that is mostly because that is not what I am used to seeing.
bigAWL
07-23-2010, 02:45 AM
Looks to me like new Mickey has a taller forhead (the black on his head doesn't come down as far as it used to), and I think his eyes are taller (more oblong) with pupils that are less centered. Maybe the newer head is bigger over all.
Looks like these Mickeys both have big fat glove hands, but I've seen older photos where Mickey simply has human-sized hands with regular white gloves.
BarbieGal457
07-23-2010, 11:14 AM
It also looks like the heart-shaped area around his eyes and cheeks is wider than previous incarnations. I love watching characters/WDW progress! I was born in '88 so I missed quite a lot!
Mindy5767
07-23-2010, 02:05 PM
Yes, I think that Mickey's newer head has a overall larger face. So that reduced that black areas of his head. His face does seem a bit wider now too. Maybe the whole head is a little larger.
I haven't seen pics posted yet, but I saw an old photo of Winnie the Pooh and THAT one had a much bigger difference in the style.

Here are some pics of the Mary Blair art prints from the Contemp rooms...
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/ART1.jpg
There were two sizes of prints, this was one of the small ones with image measuring approx 17 x 20".
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/ART5.jpg
This one was wifes very favorite! Also 17 x 20".
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/ART2.jpg
"Burro going Right..." was one of the larger ones- approx 20 x 30". With the double framing the finished piece is about 26 x 36".
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/ART3.jpg
"Burro going Left..." was a companion piece in many rooms with the above, and also one of the big ones.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/ART6.jpg
This is also one of the big ones, and it's the only picture I have of it. Fashion historians take note- this pic was taken in 1975! There were also larger prints in the common areas throughout the resort. No pics though... and I've never seen one offered for sale.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/ART4.jpg
I lOve the bedspread too!

Repeat of posting from 2009, info about the Magic Kingdom as it Never Was map:
As posted by flyinglizard: The "World" map . . . would eventually be ripped off the walls and sold for scrap masonite for $5.00! Most were heavily damaged in the removal process and all the frames were destroyed.
and
. . . Inside a Contemp room... the "map" picture on the right is now a "holy grail" to park collectors and probably would bring thousands of $$$... if you could find one! It measured 4 by 5 feet.
There is no way of knowing how many still exist, but I would guess that it would not be a great number."
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/SEYATES/IMG_7157.jpg
As I posted on the Disney @ Home thread:

Wouldn't you love to see a photo of the view out that window 28 years later? Maybe you and (I'm supposing) your sister could find that doll and recreate the shot. I wonder what building or landscaping stands in that very, very empty area we can see out the 1982 window.

Just some trees - no new buildings. You can still see the hedges and they expanded the parking lot further out since the convention center took up part of the parking when it was built. About the only change you would really notice if you looked now would be more trees hiding the monorail line.
I like you idea of recreating old photos. One day I am going to print out my old photos from the 70's and take them with me to the park and take "after" photos from the exact spot.

Wow - thanks for the flashback -- we stayed in a FW cabin in 1990. It looked the same then. We stayed in 1982 as well -- the picture in an earlier post from a guidebook had a nice outside shot of what the "cabins" looked like then. I think I'm glad I didn't get to go when I first wanted to (i.e., when WDW first opened), because now my first memories of WDW it's incredibly lush and green and I wouldn't have liked being in the sun so much. It also looks like the heart-shaped area around his eyes and cheeks is wider than previous incarnations. I love watching characters/WDW progress! I was born in '88 so I missed quite a lot!

I don't know if anyone answered you or not - but that is at the 'old' Downtown Disney. The Marketplace. You can see Fulton's - or whatever is was called back then in the background.
Sorry of this is a repeat!
I am getting real liberal with the term 'vintage resort pics'. Below are a couple of pics from the beach at Fort Wilderness - I think. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, I had dinner there with my ex-husband when it was the Empress Lilly. It was a complete disaster, which is why I remember it so well. Not because of the restaurant, but because of my ex's lack of social graces. :headache: But at any rate, I remember the real gold on the walls and the roses and and cigars they handed out. It was the early 80's and I was very impressed by it all.

SusanElleen, I just found this thread and seen your posting of the map of the MK as it never was. That is absolutely the best thing I have ever seen and I think it so awesome that your husband was able to "rescue" it and it has been lovingly kept all these years. I am huge retro fan of both DL and WDW stuff and buy many things from e-bay. Although I could have never afforded such a "masterpiece" if sold it makes me happy to know that those who appreciate such things have come to own them. ;) Thanks for sharing!! :goodvibes

[QUOTE=BaciBecky;18916618]I had forgotten all about her! Those days were wonderful - so much more magic. I loved the name then: Polynesian Village.]
When I check in in July I intend to say I'm staying at the Polynesian Village. Village just resonates as a destination more than resort but I suppose this is why I am not head of marketing at Disney. Anyway, I also am a "class of '72" veteran and I have pics of me going down the old slide in my purple and pink swimsuit. Unfortunately I lack the technology to upload it.
Have also stayed in the Contemporary in the early 80s and the old Vacation Villas.
This is a lovely thread.
Stayed at Vacation Villas 3 times in the 80's gonna look for some photos

MaryD73,
The picture in question is from Lake Buena Vista Village. It's now Downtown Disney. The big steamboat in the background was a restaurant named the Lillie Belle, named after Walt's wife. Lake Buena Vista Village opened in 1975. I was 6 years old then and remember my Mom loved it. I didn't care for it because it only had one little upscale, overpriced toy store. A lot has changed since then.
I thought it was called the Empress Lilly

Does anyone know if they renovated to Cabins at Ft. Wilderness or if they actually put now modular/manufactured units in?
It seems like they are the same size overall - but I can't imagine doing a total renovation/rehab on a manufactured home. It would be so much faster to just put all new units in. Disconnect utilities - move it out - move new unit in - and connect utilities. Seems simple enough!
But I wonder!

I read on the camping board that they moved out all the trailers. They are now in a retirement community somewhere else in Florida. The cabins were new. I suspect it made sense to keep the units roughly the same size since the loops were set-up for them.

These pics are all so great! My first trip was as a child in 1993. We stayed at Dixie Landings. Now, I know '93 isn't as vintage as the 70's, but I was wondering if anyone had any pics of Dixie Landings they could post here? I have very few pictures from that trip and NONE of the resort, because my mother's roll of film was lost before it was ever developed. :sad1:

OK, I'll kick this off. Here is a pic of the old Tree House Villas. They were 3 bedroom villas; two on the main floor and one at the base of the tree house. It was taken in 1981 and I scanned it from a slide (hence the poor quality). Even though it is not the greatest picture of the villas it still brings back great memories.

This is what the room at the Grand Floridian looked like in 1988. The decor was very pleasant and this trip was the first time we encountered the "pay" fridge!

After the Contemp rooms were remodeled, they looked like this in 1989...
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/contemp89-2.jpg
Looks like they saved a lot of money on the new furniture and artwork... again 1989.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/flynglizrd/contemp89-3.jpg
I always liked having two sinks in the bath as we had in 1989 at the Contemporary Resort. After the next renovation, there was only one basin.
OMG! All I see when I look at these pictures of the Contemporary is the Teddy Ruxpin doll the little girl is holding. That definitely reminds me of the 80's and I still have my Teddy Ruxpin. On a side note, those rooms are so ugly! I stayed there in the early 90's and do not recall what they looked like, but it definitely wasn't that.

They didn't fill int he upper portion - the photo is actually a bit of an optical illusion.
There is a planter in the middle of the plaza once you pass through the turnstiles - the people that you see walking are walking BEHIND the planter - the little girl is sitting on the the FRONT on of the planter, and because the landscaping/planting in the planter slopes from front to back, going up, it looks like the ground behind the planter is higher than the front - it actually isn't higher - it just looks that way!
Currently the photopass photographers usually stand against the rear side of that planter to get photos in front of the train station!
I hope that clears things up! :goodvibes

Sorry but this was the first picture I ever scanned. This was me in 1973 at CR. We didn't stay there on this trip but back then we could "pool hop". We stayed at the campground which probably was not called Fort Wilderness back then but maybe it was. Sorry no pictures of the campground. Campground pool hopping was allowed because the campground didn't have a pool of it's own - only the lake (which you could swim in at the time). If I am remembering, FW didn't get a pool till the mid 80's.
My favorite pool hop pool was Poly as it had the rock slide. We never went to the CR - my mom thought it was "too snooty" there. ROFL.

I remember going to both pools. The Poly is my dream resort:cloud9: because of the volcano slide. I was too short and not a strong swimmer at the time and I couldn't go down the slide. I was so upset. I determined to stay at The Poly and go down that slide even thought it isn't the exact same slide.

If you Google the Village of La Casa Del Sol, you will see the community that bought the old trailers. They are still in use today.
I remember seeing the new log cabins being trucked toward WDW during the replacement period and thinking how neat they were. I couldn't wait to stay in one!
