I just started listening to your Podcast re : people who are frequent travellers to WDW and have to hear negative comments from family and friends. We discovered the joy of Disney in 2005 when we became DVC members. We have been to Disney 4 times since then, plus a Dsiney cruise and a trip planned for this Aug. to Disneyland. Disney represents so many things to me. Most importantly, it gives us a chance to bond as a family. My kids enjoy special memories with their parents and their grand-parents (something I never had). I love the amazing customer service we get and wonderful CM's who bend over backwards on so many occasions. I am tired of the weird looks and people saying, "you really need to see more of the world", "we prefer our cottage in Northern Ontario", "Disney is just too commerical for us" etc. Now, I simply so not bother telling anyone where we are going. People simply love raining on people's parades. Anyway, love the Podcast - only listened to about 5 episodes and enjoying them.

I hear ya loud and clear TG! We have some friends that have a fit everytime we go (like it's really any of their business!). They just don't understand why we want to go back to the same place over and over again...yet talk all the time about how nice it would be to have a house at the lake to go to every summer. Hmmmm...

Disney is one of those things you either love it or you don't. My dh and I were hooked the first time we went. (and I won't even get started on the kids.) We decided to join the DVC when we figured we were coming back year after year.
Last year, we invited my cousin and her kids to come along. While they had a terrific time, they have no desire to come back again.
It's very hard for us who love disney  to believe that there are folks out there who don't feel the same way. I live in Southern NJ (15 miles from Philadelphia) Folks here go to the Jersey shore every year like it was some type of holy pilgrimage. I've never gotten it- to me, it's dirty, expensive ( a week at the shore can easily cost 1000's) and no where near the level of disney.
When I get that question, I just smile and ask "so where are you going this summer" 9/10 times my vacation sounds better. :lmao:

same here! People say that we should "explore" and try new places, but why should we try new places if we enjoy ourselves in Disney??

To me, it's no different than anyone that has a time share that goes the same place every year, or families that own cabins/vacation houses on the lake that go every year. Instead of going to those places, I go to Disney. Once I explained that to a couple of people that hounded me about it relentlessly, they finally understood. ;)

This is our second year in a row going and just that seems to set people off. Just the other day I was discussing it with a person I work with (who isnt a real close friend, more of an associate) and he asked how many children I have and how they like going to WDW. When I replied that we do not have kids and arent planning on it for a while yet, he was incredulous and didnt understand why would even go. So yes, let alone going there frequently gets you funny looks and responses, try saying that with no kids with non-WDW people.

Just yesterday I had someone ask me.
“Ok so you have been to Disneyland 2 times, you have been to Disneyworld 2 times and now you're going to Disney World again and staying just at Disney World for two whole weeks."
I smiled :) and just said, "yup.":thumbsup2 :rotfl2::rolleyes1:lmao:
I think allot has to do with jealousy, other wise why would they care where I go on my vacations.

I got the same thing when we booked our trip for this September. Me and DBF went last Sept and both loved it. It was his first trip and my first in 10 years. We coudln't pass up the free dining so we decided to go again! Then my parents (who travel to Cuba EVERY year) asked how we could want to go to the same place again.. doesn't really make sense. I think people that say that just don't get that it's so much more than a theme park....

I'm one of those people who want to see more of the US than just Disney World. So where am I going this year?? Disney World :rotfl: for about the 12th time. It just keeps drawing us back and we have no children! I still want to see other places & we do every few years, but it's so much fun at WDW. Hopefully someday we'll be able to go on 2 vacations a year, one at the World and one someplace else in the world!
I also get those types of remarks. Get tired of hearing it, but I'll have to remember what another poster said, where are they going?

Traveling is one of my passions. I lied - it's my true calling. I should have been born with wings!!:cheer2: I've been to six out of 7 continents, and this will be my 16th visit to the World. Whenever someone asks why we keep going back - this is our second year in a row, usually it's every 2 to 3 years - I say because that's what we like to do. I too have friends who haul it to LBI or Wildwood (in NJ) EVERY summer for a week and have never gone anywhere else.:confused3 I don't question their preferences and I don't feel the need to defend mine. :thumbsup2 Actually a week at LBI can cost MORE than a week at WDW. And at WDW I don't have to deal with GSP traffic:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: !!!

I could go every year but my DW isn't quite that type so I made some concessions and we'll be going to Williamsburg, VA for vacation next and then returning to Disney when our daughter is a little bit older (and before the 3 year old cutoff..hahahaa)

My family has been 9 times in the past four years. I am a teacher and my students began asking what was up with Disney? I began bringing them once a year to perform in MMD and now they are hooked, as well. Their parents are puzzled over the "Disney nut choir director". But hey, ya gotta spread the magic any way ya can right???? This years' choir seniors, my DH and myself leave this Friday for an 8 day stay at Pop Century. Two of the seniors will be CM's this Spring!!!!!!! I feel my teaching has to contain a little pixie dust. My principal commented to me about "going too far" when I wear my pearl Mickey earrings and my 14K Mickey pendant with diamonds. Whatever!!!!!
Jealousy, just plain jealousy.:rolleyes1

I know how everyone feels when thier family and friends give them dirty looks. But hey, I know people who go to the beach oevery single year(since I live 2 and half hours or so from Ocean City Md), so when they say something to me and my family of going to disney again, I say, well your going to Ocean City again. I mean things change all the time and when you think about it, its not as expensive of going other places.
Just keep going (if you can) and love every minute of. Thats why it is call, "The happiest place on earth"

We have gone with our children every other year beginning in 1995. We would save money by not going on a vacation the year in between. I feel that if I am not asking someone else to pay for my vacation, I don't really care what they think. My MIL is the worst. She always says, "but you just went there!" We have started going each year since 2005. We have four children now ranging in age from 19-3 and wanted to get in as many family trips to our favorite place before our two oldest leave for college. This spring my DS joined the college program at WDW and we were so excited. More reason to go! How can anyone criticize me for going to visit my son after all? He has been there since Jan and will be coming home in Aug. We've gone twice and are going two more times before he comes home. The in-laws didn't understand us letting him do the program and they went once to visit and don't understand the appeal of WDW. Of course they went during spring break week, maybe not a good first impression.
I just don't see how a family vacationing together anywhere can be looked upon as a bad thing.

I know what you mean. We get that all the time from some people we know, who by the way have never been to Disney. These are the same people who shell out big bucks every year to go to the Jersey Shore for their vacation. So we turn the tables on them and say, "the shore again, you got to be kidding me!";) We love the Jersey shore too but we only go for day trips now.

I have to say that I envy all of you being able to go to Disney every year. To have the opportunity to make those family memories at such a magical place. From here its such a long way and just so expensive that we don't come across many people that have actually been. We don't have anything quite like Disney here. We have Dreamworld which is good but just doens't compare. Not quite the place you go to everyyear.
In saying that we have been to DL 3 times and Disneyland Paris once. This will be our first trip to WDW this year. Even so, people don't actually say, your going again.... but they do laugh and just say I'm obsessed. Which is true.:cloud9:
We have been lucky enough to see quite a bit of Australia and other parts of the world but Disney is the one place that I want to keep coming back to.

I was telling a co-worker about our family's WDW trip planned for later this year. He said he's never been there and one of the supervisors heard him say that and told him "Don't ever go there! It's terrible! We hated it.. we had a HORRIBLE time! All we did was stand in line all day!"
I was shocked! First that she was so rude that she butted in the conversation (actually she's always that way, so I don't know why I was shocked) And secondly, how can someone "hate" what alot of us consider the most magical place on earth?
I just don't get it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. But I learned not to talk about WDW anywhere near earshot of her because she ALWAYS shouts out derogitory remarks about it. :sad2: Which is a total bummer because I'm so excited, it's all I can think about!

My co-workers said I need help.... My husband is trying to find me a 12-step program.... BUT who do you think they come to when they need advice on WDW??? Hmmm???? :goodvibes

We go a couple of times a year, usually managing another trip somewhere else annually, and we have a little travel trailer for close-by weekend trips. We put a high premium on vacationing.
We were at OKW last Thanksgiving, and DS (the Marine, 24), made an interesting observation. My job moved us several times while the kids were growing up, and DS said, "Y'know, Disney has been kind of the constant. No matter where we've lived, coming to Disney was like coming home."
You can't pay for a sentiment like THAT. Of COURSE we go to Disney again. Duh.

I think you're on to something there!!! You really do "leave the real world behind" :goodvibes And those trips to the shore.....overrated!! We go to Ocean City, MD every year for a week with my husband's family. True, it's a family "gathering", but we still do the same things, go to the same places, etc, & it's expensive! Did I mention that my DH has been to WDW only one time?! Can't understand why we (my family) keep going back??:rotfl:

I can't tell you how many times I have heard this, from my own mother, even!!! Thankfully, my co-workers are jumping onboard right and left! 3 have already gone this year, and three of us have trips planned for the summer. All but 2 of them are first timers! It is great to have people excited about Disney!
We also are fortunate to go each year to a family place on a lake (Camp). Magic is made there too. The key is having family together, playing together, having fun together, away from the craziness of everyday life. At Disney and at Camp my family reconnects. That is a blessing!

It's so refreshing to find other "self Proclaimed Disney Addicts" like myself. Although I am from NJ, and while all the other kids were going down the shore...my parents would take us every 2 years to WDW, and I think that's what's given me the bug. Recently, my DF and I went in December, then I got the itch, and DM and I went back in March. I got the same comments as everyone else..."You're going there AGAIN, don't you want to go somewhere else?!". And the answer is NO!!! I don't think I could ever get sick of Disney. In fact, I've gotten my DF to agree to another trip in January as a graduation celebration from graduate school, and I'm working on getting mom and dad to come down too.
So it's good to know that there are others just like me who love the mouse!:thumbsup2

Oh...one more -
I would love to hear tips for those travelling with seniors. My father in law travels to Disney with us and has Parkinson's. While he walks with a cane - most of he time we get him a wheelchair to make his trip more comfortable. Since there is an increasing older population now and many of us are in the "sandwich generation" - this would be helpful. Are there any not to obvious tips for us?
Also, I think when people request a wheelchair - they should provide proof that it is for medical needs. I was told by a CM that many people get wheelchairs for "weight" reasons and tired kids who don't want to walk. My FIL had a hard time finding a wheelchair at AK on last trip.

That's another hot button issue you will find on the boards. It's said that because of HIPAA laws in the US, Disney should not require some kind of medical proof that you need to rent a wheelchair.
I think there are way too many people abusing the system - on our last trip down, we saw so many kids being pushed in wheelchairs (2 kids at a time). My guess was they'd rent them so they'd get the "perks" of being a wheelchair party because there are no benefits to renting a stroller. And I know there are those that will read what I wrote and say "but there are plenty of people who don't have visible disabilities" and of course I'm aware of that. But to think that there aren't people who abuse the system means you're walking around wearing rose colored glasses.

That's kinda silly.... don't they require you to get a doctor's note to get a handicap permit to park in the special spots? Then you have to display it in the car for everyone to see. How is that any different then asking for a note saying you need a wheelchair. It doesn't have to state what's wrong wtih you. Just that you need one for medical reasons.

I had a whole long reply typed up and my internet decided to shut off, so I'm going to try to remember what I wrote.
I'm sorry you took my post personally - I was obviously not talking about people who have valid reasons for using a wheelchair. I have had to use one myself (as a teenager with a non-visible medical condition) and both my father in law and mother use wheelchairs (FIL full time because he's a paraplegic and my mother uses one for long distances). I would have happily furnished a doctor's note if it was required (in fact, we brought one along with us just in case).
My point is, the people who abuse the system (and they know who they are) shouldn't be able to reap the "benefits" of the ones who really need to be in a wheelchair. A person who genuinely needs a chair (i.e. someone with a medical condition - whatever that may be) should be able to get one. It's the same with handicapped parking spaces requiring a placard, IMO.

I can totally relate with y'all! We're go every year, sometimes more than once a year, and most people don't understand why. We also go other places, but nothing beats Disney. We have two or three friends that have caught the "Disney bug" and they get why we keep going back over and over again, so we go with them a lot. If my mother-in-law tells me one more time that our kids are spoiled and they're going to get sick of Disneyworld....

I have all the guide books for every year we've gone. What I've also done (which takes things to the extreme, I know, but...) is printed out everything pertaining to each park, trimmed off the detritus, and glued the pages into a spiral notebook. One for each park. It contains all the information you need for: say World SHowcase. It has the "not to be missed" fun stuffs that are easily overlooked. I also have a notebook pertaining to all the hidden mickeys that have been posted to date. I also have one or two relating to the Overlooked Attractions.

I live at the Jersey shore too and the reason I don't go too often is because I can't get on thanks to the Bennies!!! :headache:

I've been to WDW over 40 times and never get tired of returning to my "happy" place! I'm so lucky that my DH and one of my DD's love Disney almost as much as I do. Friends and family still give me saracastic remarks about going back again and again but I just tell them I get the "magic" and some people just don't! I use to feel funny telling people I was going back again but now I'm proud of it. I'm always the person people come to when they are planning a first time trip to the World.:cool1:

We get the same thing from everyone. You're going there again?? WE love disney and would go more than once a year if could. We also go to Niagara Falls, Canada and add a few days at Daytona Beach before Disney.
If we wanted to go somewhere else we would, but we love Disney. We return home refreshed and reminded there still is magic in the world!!!! :)

I think there are a lot of people that go there, ride all the rides, and see the major attractions, and think they've now "done" WDW so what's the big deal in going back for a while. If all I did was go commando style to the same rides over and over, I'd probably see it the way they do (wait in line, ride a ride, yada, yada, yada). And of course, there are even those that think MK is all of WDW. They fail to realize:
- There are new things added every year. I've heard negative comments from people that don't even know about Animal Kingdom since they haven't been in so long, not to mention all that's been added to the other parks in the last 5 years.
- There is so much more there than just the major attractions - all of the dining options, all of the other smaller performances that the majority never see or walk past on their way to the rides, character interactions (I don't think any ride got the same reaction from my DDs last time than when Wendy walked up to them and talked to them for 10 minutes - they were enthralled).
- It's not just for children. Besides getting to relive your childhood again, there are nice bars, restaurants, clubs, beaches, shops, beautiful scenery, activities, it's amazing. And I don't just mean adults get to be kids. My DD11 is very much at that "I'm too cool for everything" phase where she's overly concious of how she dresses, looks, etc. and is normally mortified by hanging around her uncool parents - yet this is the same kid who wore her new mouse ears all day long every day.
- The resorts themselves are destinations. I don't think we'll have "enough" of WDW until we've stayed at most of them. We've stayed at POFQ, POP, CSR, and are staying at BC in August and each place brought its own magic to the vacation. We aren't just staying at BC because it's a deluxe which we haven't done, but because we loved the Boardwalk area last time and want it to be convenient to hang out there next time and we also didn't get enough of Epcot last time so the proximity to it is nice as well. We've also purposely planned dinners at the other resorts to have an opportunity to explore them. Which leads to my next point.
- Nobody does things like Disney. Like anywhere else, sometimes things go wrong or you run into the occasional problem, but so much goes right for us at Disney that it's hard to beat anywhere else. The theming, attention to detail, how well-maintained and clean they keep everything (despite the number of people that come every day), the vast majority of CMs that are kind, polite, helpful, and go out of their way to make your vacation special, not to mention all of the little extras they do, especially now during the year of a million dreams.
We'll definitely go other places. Next year we're thinking of a cruise (though as much as I look forward to some evening gambling on the ship, we will seriously consider a Disney cruise since I have no doubt we'd love it). And we do want to see more of the world still. We went to WDW in April for Easter break and while we're normally a one-trip-per-year family, this year is special since it's going to be my DW's 40th b-day as well as our 15th anniversary so when we were deciding on something for August, we were down to about 5 options and picked, you guessed it, WDW! And this over choices like Atlantis, or an all-inclusive in the Caribbean, and everyone is anxious to go back.

I agree, we always get 'you're not going there again are you?' :confused3
We are lucky enough to live on a small island off the south coast of the UK and so spend alot of time on the beach, we don't want to then go on holiday to the beach!!
We love Disney and have recently become DVC members and so hopefully we will be returning for many years to come!
