With the new procedure of matching bags to passengers there is an even greater need to be the airport early. In addition, Delta has put in a policy that if your bags are not checked in a half-hour before departure you will lose your seat on that flight. Other carriers haven't put a policy in place yet but it could be coming. The airlines are recommending being at the airport 2 hours prior to flight time. Here's an article with the details
