We paid $295 for the first phase of class time and drive time. In 6 months it's another $100 for phase 2 then I believe $40 for driving test.
It was free when I did. It was only 10 years ago :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

We don't have to pay in hereif you take it at school -- if you do a AAA class or private school class, it's $300-$400.

Our school classes are after-school and during the summer.

gilby -- Keep in mind that that $350 is just the tip of the iceberg. Have you priced insurance. My son's was $1,600 his first year. Thank goodness, a year of clean driving reduced that a lot.

We don't have it in school where I live. My DD will be 16 (and eligible to drive) in July.

Cost: my preferred course-800 + tax That would be 4 or 5 full classroom days and 12 hours of driving. That cuts her waiting time for a full license (to drive alone) from 12 months to 8 months. It also cuts her insurance (probably another 30 a month to add her to my vehicle). Also, that particular course is CAA approved, and she would get a year's coverage of CAA free (about $40, since I am a member). Other courses here run $500 and up, with similar standards. If they don't meet the standards, they don't get the perk of early license.

Here in NY, the class (which meets after school, but is taught by a local driving school) is $425, which is class and drive time once a week each for about 4 months. The learners permit is $75, have to have that before you can register for the class, and then insurance...about $1400 to add my son to my policy, $3700 for him to have his own:scared1: !!

He's almost done too...we're getting to the point where we'll have to make that decision soon, pending his getting a summer job that is!!!

Our county (possibly state) also provides drivers education free of charge after school or during the summer. Thank goodness it was free or our ds could not have gone. We do not have hundreds of dollars to pay for driver training and then turn around and pay out astronomical prices for his insurance when he got his license. Our county offers a great instructors and he had lots of hours on the road with them. He even had a flat tire and the instructor made him change it! Good life experience!!

Now his dad and I had to continue the training for the year he had his permit and he has had is license now for 6 months and only one minor ticket (tail-light out). No points just a fine - you know the government has to get their money!!

$585 in Nashua NH through a private driving school. If they take it through the school it's less, but there is such a waiting list the kids don't want to wait. DS took it through the school and he was 18 before he got his license.

Another tarheel here. No fee here either. Our taxes cover this. DS completed his last fall. Getting license November 6. Which he will be glad to tell you! ;) So after that, be careful! He's on the road alone! :car:

The class here is free, during school time and is mandatory for all students. The driving part of it was $325 the school no longer offers it.

I just wrote the check for DS's summer driver's ed.... $150.

Im in SW VA and I paid $350 for my DD's class/behind the wheel combo class last summer. They offer the classroom part in school and if you only needed the behind the wheel privately it would be $250. We just took it in the summer and DD didnt have to waste a credit in school taking the class part.

My DS took DE at school as a class free also! My sister had to pay $500-600 for her DD. She lives in Alpharetta GA.

Just signed DS up for this summer through the high school for $350.

DD is taking driver's ed this summer at the HS for $310. I found that to be bad enough, but then I found out her show choir expenses will top $600! My budget is busted!

Free in WV!

When I took it in 2003 (my 10th grade year) It was a semester long course and one period a day you did the "class part" and then you drove once a week, during a different class (How I loved getting out of Algebra 2!)

However, I don't think they do that anymore? I'm not sure. I think they switched it to year-long class and you drive during the class as well.

Either way, its free!

It's $300 here in Southwest Michigan. But, I really wonder how prepared a 15 year old is to be having so much responsibility. I mean, he still picks on his 4 year old sister.

In Delaware you are entitled to 'free' drivers education as part of the public school system. If you attend private school and your school does not offer drivers ed, you still get to take it free at the public school, but as an evening course or summer school. You can only get this 'free' if you are in the 10th grade and passing your core classes.

Here in Florida it's free. My DS did it in high school and only needed to go to the DMV for the final test and license. I think the license was $15

My son just did his last year. The classroom portion was through school. The actual behind the wheel portion was $295.00 for 6 sessions. The permit fee is paid to the state and becomes the license upon passing the road test.
