Am i becoming a grumpy old man? ("Yes!" cry half the forum, the other half say "what do you mean becoming"??) :happytv:

Am I the only one who gets irritated when reading posts written in "txt spk"??
It seems the younger ones on here (and other forums) pepper their postings with "cuz" and "wat U" "R U rite" "wud" etc etc. which make it difficult to read as you spend more time deciphering the posts.

Or is it, as I said, just me being a grumpy old fart?

R U Bcming? yes Obi I reckon you are :lmao: only kidding., I can see your point of view, I'm no fan of text speak myself but sometimes use it when it needs to be short and sweet. i guess it depends who I'm communicating with and knowing that I'v egot the english language sussed means I'm slack through speed rather than any need to disguise my lack of vocab.

since time began we've been trying to make communication quicker and easier, I guess its really an extension of that

I don't see many posts written like that here, unless I am just good at avoiding them LOL.

I don't like it either and to be honest would rarely read a post if it was written that way, I would just skip to the next one :)

I think text speak should be just for phones, the reason being you are limited with the number of characters per text. Here you can ramble on for ever ;)

It's funny because I go on a forum occasionally that is mainly 13 -30 year old (sometimes aggressive)males and that forum bans text speak etc, yet others with much more of a cross section allows it.

I do find it a little annoying and pass over many such posts, though sometimes wish I could shorten words!!!!

No your not the only one, DH and DB recently got a text off DD whilst stood in Currys and stopped the first young assistant they saw and asked what the hell does this say :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Hi Obi :goodvibes

I don't mind text speak, though i've never seen much of that on here.

I must admit that i use text speak on my mobile and as a result, i often have to re-write posts to edit text speak:rotfl: Especialy if i havn't been posting much:flower3: apologies to anyone if i have lapsed into txt speak at any time, i have always tried to edit my posts in order to correct this :goodvibes

So in answer to your question, Obi, no i don't think you are "an old fart" Maybe you just need to spend time with some of those unusual creatures we all know and love, Teenagers!:lmao:

I hate text speak/type, even in texts! Although I do get the occasional word spelt wrong, along with typos I try to avoid it and will edit a post if I see them after I have posted!!

Im not keen on text speak, more so because I dont really know how to do it, most of my text messages on the mobile go over onto two pages because I always use full words;)

:goodvibes I'm not very good at text speak. Luckily my current mobile has predictive texting that seems to work as it used to take me years to write a message.

It's not just "txt speak", the standard of spelling in general is dreadful!

I know my spelling is bad, however I spent more time in hospital as a child than at school.

LOL I think you just take out all the vowels! :rolleyes1
I sometimes use it in texts - although less these days that I get 1000 free with my contract (so I dont' need to keep them short) and since I use predictive text on my phone it's more hassle to shorten words as it doenst' recognise them.
However I HATE it when I see it in other places. I have a friend who does kids clubs with me sometimes and when she prepares stuff for the children to read she does it in text speak because she thinks it will make her 'cool' and it does my head in... Teaching the kids to spell badly...

I have noticed however that I've actually started saying 'LOL' in conversation because I use it on here and msn so often... and always want to refer to my husband as DH and have to stop myself as no-one would know what i was talking about! Anyone else have this problem too?

This is me too - Usually 2 to 3 pages on a mobile, absolutely useless with text speak. Guess us oldies just weren't brought up with all these gadgets !!

Not sure where else to ask this, but who do DH, DD etc. refer to... in fact, can someone please fill me in on the more common forum shorthands as although i understand 'txt spk', i can't always follow 'f0rum spk'!

(I apologise for being an annoying 'newbie' :confused3 )

Hi And  welcome to the DIS

I just don't get 'teen text' at all :confused3 and worse still it has started creeping into emails and stuf at work too which drives me mad. Having said that I do use LOL quite a bit myself :)
