Hi all! Can anybody suggest a way to do a simple wedding cake for about 30 people that would be hard to wreck! DD is getting married next month and I would love to make it for her. I have had some experience with simple birthday cakes and such but never did a wedding cake. (Thinking of three tiers) I would be fine with using cake mix, but most worried about putting it together. Will check out Wilton, but I find the Dis always has the best suggestions! TIA /Grammy:goodvibes

its very fashioable now to put the layers one on top of eac other without supports or anything in between. Ir you can hire a "floating" cake stand - its like a silver stand where the tiers are all displayed individually, allowing you to really go to town on the top of each of you want to :goodvibes

I've also seen fresh flowers used to good effect -where you arrange a ring of, say, rosebuds on top of a layer and stand the next cake on top of it. If you go to bbc.co.uk/food, or bbcgoodfood.co.uk I think one of them has a wedding cake recipe complete with assembly instructions.

You also need to remember the weight of the cakes - will the bottom layer support the others?

I'm no expert but I hope this helps:)

I did my wedding cake. I used tiers, and silk flowers. I went to the baking supply shop, and they had everything I needed for the supports. I used lollypop sticks to support the layers.

For the frosting, white chocolate frosting (yumm-o) with a star tip. I smooth frosted, then piped the frosting over the sides. I did shells on the top and bottom edge, then put on the flowers on their plastic stand. I'll see if I can upload a pic

Update on cake: thanks to all of your encouragment and suggestions. I have gotten the cakes made, torted and frozen. Made the buttercream and it is in refrig in airtight container. Cake is choclate and torted with rasberry filling. Anybody got and idea for filling that is not too sweet and does not need refrigeration for long period of time? Have posted on some cake type boards but I still love the Dis! tia Grammy
