I am a vet. To get a military discount do you have to be active. And what proof do you take with you

Shades of Green is the resort that offers military and ex-military significant savings for a visit to WDW.
Eligibility requirements are posted here.. On their website.

Shades of Green is a short walk from the Polynesian Resort and is located on Disney Property.

Being a veteran won't get you a discount at Shades of Green unless you were retired military or POW.

Being a straight up veteran won't.. but there are more categories than you noted.. Admittedly some of these are pretty specialized.
But, I did not know for example that current National Guard were eligible.
Here are some other exceptions .. See the full list of eligibility at the link in post # 2.
# Others separated from the Armed Forces and their family members- Honorably Discharged Veterans with 100% service-connected disability (and their families) and involuntarily separated service members under the Transition Assistance Management Program. Personnel separated under the Voluntary Seperation Incentive (VSI) and Special Separation Benefit (SSB) programs for two years after separation.
# Special category- Medal of Honor Recipients.
# Others associated with the Department of Defense- Former Prisoners of War (POWs) and spouses of current POWs or Service members missing in action. Unremarried surviving spouses of personnel who died while on active duty or while in retired status.
