I just wondered if anyone has ever had anything similiar....about 2 years ago i dropped something on my big toe (and yes it hurt) no bruising or anything but it was kinda sensitive after that, like it i tapped it on anything it would be very painful...fast forward to about 5 months ago and i start getting very bad pains always during the night, the toe would swell and get very hot...i've been to the doctors twice and they really dont know, one said rest it (yeah like i havent tried that) and the other gave me sleeping tablets with painkillers in them which made me like a zombie, the toe is now permanently swollen and aches during the day...has anyone any suggestions?

If the doctors as sure that you didn't break the toe, could the nail be damaged? Have you seen a chiropodist?

The doctors did have a look at the nail and said it looked fine, they also said it didnt look swollen, although when its painful it does look it as i see a reflexologist and she notced it also...i'm worried it could be gout.

Sounds really similar to what I was going through last year Emily, I was in agony and thought I had some form of Gout, but it turned out to be arthritis of the toe, it was really swollen and I was in terrible pain with it. You have my sympathies.

Emily ~ I think you might be a bit young for gout. I had an ingrown toenail in my big toe and wasn't swollen all the time. You could always ask the doctors if it is gout or ask to be referred to a chiropodist within the practice.

Think that is a really good idea. You big toe is so important to your foot. You want to get any problem with it sorted out nice and quickly.

Emily first of all you have my sympathy as it sounds very similiar to something l had. Mine was with my 2nd to smallest toe and the pain started after reaching up into a cupboard. It was so painful that it made me walk with a limp, l tried to ignore if for a while then one night the pain was so bad and the toe so swollen i thought i better go to my doctors. l couldnt wear a shoe and had to go in a slipper :sad2: , the doc told me it was Gout and sent me for a blood test. This came back fine, so he thought it was a trapped nerve in the toe and sent me for a x-ray. Thankfully this came back with some answers, l'd broke the toe without knowing it due to a softening of the bone cartlidge. It's very common in women apparently in their fingers and toes, eventually l had a small op to take some bone out of my ankle and put into the toe. Hopefully you'll get this sorted out soon so that you can get some much required sleep

A friend of mine had a problem with her toe She kicked it up on a caravan door while she was on holiday they said she hadn't broken it but still she was in a lot of pain. A couple of years later she was still getting pain from it now and then and decided to go to the hospital. They found she had broken the toe and because it hadn't healed properly the skin was growing in between the 2 pieces of bone so it couldn't knit back together. She had an operation and now it is fine. I would defo go back to the doctors or just go to Russells hall (our local hospital) to see what they say good luck with it.
