View Full Version : To Those of you who think dancing is just a bunch of fluff....

You're wrong. It actually takes a lot of work. You learn a three and a half minute routine starting in September and MUST have it memorized by February and go perform it in competitions. It's a lot more work than you'd think. It takes a lot of time and effort. It also takes FOREVER to take the makeup off. We wear mascara, eye shadow, blush, lip stick, eyeliner, lip liner, tons of glitter, little colored stick on gems on the corner of our eyes, stuff on our eyebrows, curling our hair, putting it in a bun, using hairspray so the curls stay, tights, $150 dance shoes, and our dance costumes. It also costs tons of money! Reason i'm doing this today is because someone at school said that all McKenzie and I do is dance around in little costumes. I'm sorry I have zero tolerance for someody who says that all we do is fluff and puff.

Actually today my biology teacher said dance is a waste of energy...
But I have a lot of appreciation for the people that actually do it. I'd never be able to remember those routines. :p

Let's not forget classical ballet. Nutcracker routines are learned between October - December at the place where I used to dance.

Dancing's sweet.
I have respect for dancers.
Grace. I have NO grace... I'm probably the biggest clutz you've ever met.
I can't memorize things. It's just hard.
Tolerance. Dancers need tolerance and i have little.

It is easy to remember the routines and stuff, it's like remembering the words to a song.

While with enough practice and effort, anyone could theoretically do it, it still takes commitment by the dancers. You need natural rythym and chemistry with your partner, which is cultivated over time.
Btw, I wouldn't get mad at the giel for telling you all you do is dance. I'd of course try to SWAY the opinion towards "she does that as a nice hobby." TO be honest, from your threads, I think if people are talking about you for something other than boys, support it! ;)

Depends on the person. Also our teachers flip if we don't do them perfectly. For us we do like these body rolls and we MUST do them perfectly. There are a lot of complicated moves too. Leaps, pirrouettes, turns, body rolls, box step, slide glide twist, and a bunch of other stuff. We also do splits in the air. Also some pretty complicated flips.

I respect dancers.
I can't dance, I know this for a fact.
I get winded from climbing stairs or getting ice cream out of the tub.
Dancers, are athletes too.
I am not a dancer, I am most certainly not an athlete.

If you ask me, it is. For me personally, anyway. I don't enjoy dancing. But, my lack of joy for it gives me a greater respect for people who do have it. It's fun to watch though. The stuff doesn't even look easy.

I know how you feel, I do competitive cheerleading and everyone is like "it takes nothing to be a cheerleader" "it isnt even a sport" "all you do is yell and kick"
I hate that. Its such a hard sport. It's a proven fact that more people die in cheerleading than anyother sport. And we dont just "yell and kick." Cheerleading (well all star anyway) isn't really even "cheering" anymore.
Sorry that was off topic, I just needed to vent a little :p

Totally agreed Allie! I'm a dancer too and have been dancing since age 4. I used to compete but I don't anymore because I'm more into drama. I love dance so much and it bugs me when people think its just a bunch of fluff. I always look at them and say, "Oh yeah. If dance is a bunch of fluff I'd like to see you do this." and then I'd do a triple pirouette :dance3:

I have tons of respect for dancers because I did it for years. I realized it wasn't my thing and moved on though, but my respect still stands.
Plus, I also want to applaud you for being able to laugh at yourself, and the comment Andrew gave you. It takes a patient, good person to do that.

Whoever said the Nutcracker dances you only have Oct-Dec to learn and perform, I'm right there with ya!
On dance team, sometimes we learn dances in 3 practices (maybe 6 hours) and then perform them 2 days later. It is NOT easy.

Well, not to argue. But usually this kind of dance I think she is talking about isnt partner dancing. And I dance, and have for 12 years. So there are some classes that are easy moves at first, but once you get older things get more difficult and there is more expected of you.
Especially if one of the types of dance you do is tap. Getting all the specific sounds hear from your shoes at all times so the dance goes with the beat of the music.
but yes, with partner dancing you do need rhythm and chemistry together.

i saw this thread and i was like "what!" Dancing does take a lot of energy and it is not a waste. I love dancing, i enjoy hip hop dancing. No matter what type of dance it does take a lot of energy. Five minutes ago i was working a routine and i'm tired. lol:woohoo:

Dance is energy and time consuming. Especially ballet, for me, because it's so exact. It's my faaaaave. :)

I cheer competitively too and it is extremely hard work, and hard on the body, i love it but after every practice I feel like an old lady, my bones are always popping and something is always aching, my bio dad claims it's not even a sport, but I have had more injuries from cheerleading than from any other sport I have played. We only have a minute and a half of dance in our routine but it is a work out.
