If you click on the icon in the start up tray for wireless connections, then show something like available networks it should show yours up, under the name you have given in with secured and you need a password. You should also be able to see if you are picking up anyone else's network too. Worth checking because you don't want anyone being able to access your computer though from the sounds of it, it sounds like you have made it secure.
Well done you, I cannot do it myself, oldest son does it because he is the only one that knows the passwords for the router.

its a piece of kit called a router! you attach it to your modem and take it from there, the router cost less than 50 quid.

Just a quick list of things that are sensible to do on a Wireless Router for security reasons...
1. Change the access password. Most routers come with a default username and password e.g. Admin/Admin, it's always sensible to change the password and lots of people don't making their network really unsecure.
2. Hide the SSID (Network name). If it's not broadcasting itself then it's more difficult to connect to.
3. Only allow access to specific hardware. You should be able to set the router so it only allows pre-determined hardware to access the network. This is usually done by adding the computers MAC address to a list on the router and activating it to only allow access to the listed devices.
4. Set the security to use WPA or WPA2 encryption rather than WEP encryption as WEP can now be hacked in under 10 minutes using some freely downloadable programs from the internet.
Sorry for hijacking the thread, I hope you find the information useful.

I'm so envious, I can't do anything like that!. Will show DH Alan's advice as I think we've still got the password that came with the router kit. That's about the extent of my knowledge!

Inspired by Natalie I ordered my laptop yesterday, from the same site, chose free delivery (*** I'm a 'cheapskate') and the delivery man has just left
Going to fortify myself with several cups of coffee before attempting to set it, and the wireless connection, up though ;)
I'll be back tracking, through the posts on this thread, for the tips everyone has offered :thumbsup2

This one:

I was looking at the cheaper version, with 512 MGB:
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Aspire_5101AWLMi_Laptop_LX.ABH0J.287/version-1.asp
.....but decided to go the 'whole hog' ;)
I also ordered a wireless router which was, as Nat said, just under £50.
