Need hotel advice

My sister and family (DS, DBIL, DN16, DN14, DN8) are planning a trip to Disneyland and surrounding areas the week before Memorial Day. They Hotwired the Hilton Anaheim for $69/nt for Wed to Sat. But need a hotel for the weekend through Tuesday. They want to find an economical hotel/suite near the beach. I think she is more interested in Santa Monica and said she didn't want Long Beach. I'm not familiar with the area but she is super busy right now and has asked if I could help her find something.

She also mentioned if they didn't do the beach then something near Universal. They plan on spending a day there as well.

Does anyone have any hotel suggestions?

They are flying out of LAX the day after Memorial Day. I hope you DISers can help.

Santa Monica I think is tough for finding a nice, clean hotel in a good location. I found something I would have been happy with, but it was expensive. Long Beach was very city-ish and industrial with all the oil refining, so I don't think she would want to stay there.
