I have been growing my hair for a while with the goal of donating it to Locks Of Love. Locks Of Love is an organization that collects hair donations to make wigs for children with cancer and other illnesses that causes hair loss. They require that you donate a minimum of 10 inches. I donated 4 ponytails - each measuring 12 inches in length. I will probably let my hair grow again, so that I can donate again too.

Here are some before pictures of me:

Here is all the hair they cut off. My hairdressers said because my hair is so thick, they should be able to make 2 - 3 wigs out of it!

And last but not least, here is the after. It is really short now!

That's awesome! When you said four ponytails I thought omgosh she cut four feet of hair off? But then I figured since it's thick they divided it in half or more. DD's girl scout camp did that last summer, can't remember how many girls donated but I know over 30. I've encouraged mine to do the same but for now they're against short hair.

What a great way to help others. And the short hair is very cute! :goodvibes

I did this too. I do not live in the U.S. but knew that on one of my visits, I wanted to donate to Locks of Love.

I gave 14 inches and now 2 years later, my hair is back and I can feel great about myself. I hope it brings happiness to a wonderful little girl.

Thanks for all of the kind comments. I am glad to see so many others are aware of this organization. I wish I had know about it sooner because I always get my hair cut short then go about two years without a hair cut. Once it grows out really long, then I start the process all over again and cut it really short. If I had know about this sooner, I could have donated so much more hair instead of wasting it.

OMG, I've never heard of this! I wish I knew about it. I have the thickest hair you've ever seen! I remember, when I was little, my mom taking me to the beauty school and the teacher gathering all the girls around. He'd say, "You'll never see hair this thick again, but if you do, here's how you cut it."

PrincessMajelBug just had four inches of her beautiful thick straight hair cut off on Monday, and I had about the same. If I had only known!

Thanks for sharing this, Jazz. Although I cannot see the pics (thank you, Navy), I will be sure to check them out tonight. And, from now on, they have my hair!

I am totally the oppisite of you all. I have the thinnest hair you probalby have ever seen.. I am not sure why..

It's very kind to donate hair for wigs! That's such a neat thing to do. I am wondering, is there like a special shop where you get your hair cut for locks or love, or is it just any place?

I've done this twice. It's for a really good cause. When my hair grows back I'm gonna do it again.

You do not have to go to a special shop to do this. I went to my regular hairdresser with a ziplock back to store my hair in once it was cut. He was aware that I was going to do this. He provided the elastics for the ponytails. He put the elastics in my hair then measured the four ponytails that he made to make sure they were above the 10 inch minimum. They can not use hair that has fallen on the ground, so he held onto the ponytails and handed them to me to place in my bag once they were cut. You must send your hair either in a ponytail or a braid to make it easier for them.

Once you have your hair cut off, you can print the donation form directly from their website. There are instructions included. They ask that you mail your hair in a bag placed in a padded envelope. I mailed my own hair, my hairdresser did not.
