View Full Version : I've booked!!! How am I gonna pay for it???

Given that I am absolutely desperate to get back to Disney this summer, I have been exploring a few options.

Currently, it's looking as though we can get flights, a 3-night DCL cruise, 4 nights at CBR with free dining and a couple of nights stay at DVC accommodation for just under £2000. I actually think that's a pretty good price and have managed to persuade DH it is too.

Here's the catch - it just so happens that we don't have a couple of grand just lying around at the moment. I've got enough in savings to pay the necessary deposits but would need to save roughly £1500 in the next 3 months basically. If we went without any extras for the next 3 months (and I mean no takeaways, no magazines, books, new make up, clothes or any treats of any shape or form) I reckon we could do it.

But the question is, is it worth it? I know how badly I want it but would I be better off just saying 'We can't afford it this year', accept it and start planning for next year :confused3

I am desperate to go this year too, but I know it isn't going to happen. So am waiting until the end of the year to book our trip for next year.

I don't know what to advise, but whatever your decision is it will be good either a holiday this year or next

That's the thing Kaylee, I know it makes sense not to stretch ourselves this year and, as DH says, it's not like WDW is going anywhere :rotfl: I ought to think myself lucky we've been twice in the last 8 months already - I just so badly want to do this and it may be our last chance to get away without the kids. Now listen, I'm trying to talk myself into it again :lmao:

Go for it!! When you know that you have a holiday booked you won't mind saving money for a few months. WDW may be there next year but you don't know what will happen in the next year, something could come up and stop you from going. If you can afford to go without getting yourself into masses of debt then I say go for it!

Live for the moment!

Oh I feel your pain :scared: I am in the same boat. One day just want to go for it but I know at the back of my mind it is not going to happen:sad1:

We have the problem of the kids being at school and being restricted to school holiday times. This is the first time in 12 years we have not been but on the upside it will be all the better when we get back next year.

Joh, I've been through exactly the same thing this year. I've lost count of the number of times I've said to Matt, "We just can't afford it, I'm going to accept that we're not going this year and be satisfied with all the times we have been able to go". Problem was, I just wasn't making the psychological jump. In my mind, I was still going. In fact, we were both the same - checking prices every day and trying to work out what we'd need to sacrifice to do it. As you know, we booked about 10 days ago and I feel that a huge weight has been lifted. I don't think I'd have been able to settle until the time we'd been hoping to go had passed - I'd have been in a constant state of agitation.

I guess that I am the sole angel over your shoulder (sure are a load of wicked devils on your other shoulder :lmao: ).

IF it really does financially stretch you, then I wouldn't do it. I just couldn't do without the occasional treat (or treat for my little girl, Lucy) and what if something unexpected happens (major car breakdown, problem with the house or something similar) - would you still be ok or be in trouble? Especially if you have already been a couple of times in the last 8 months - is it really worth stretching yourself? Only you can answer that... :). How about planning for something early next year instead (giving you longer to save up?

Alternatively DCL cruise and CBR sounds expensive. Could there be cheaper ways of doing it - maybe flights and a villa or staying at a budget resort? Shop around a bit? Maybe a last minute deal? Wayneg seems to be the master at getting great deals - maybe he has suggestions?

Good of Luck with whatever you decide :cool1:

I have to admit, I wouldn't go either. Three months in winter might not be a bad time to forego treats and such, but summer is a different thing.
It does seem a good price but there will be other times. Also, is it fair to keep telling the kids that they can't do stuff so that you can go on holiday without them?
Sorry if that's the wrong answer!

Ooooh Joh, I am so the wrong person to ask, because no matter what it takes I will always get on that plane, now you throw in DCL and its a no brainer, if there is a way to pay for it then do it girl, you have to:dance3:

I know the feeling. We only went November and said thats it till my DH finished uni in 3years!!!!! My god I cannot go 3 years without a mickey injection so have rallied around, done several car boots and things on ebay and made over £2000,plus our £2000 savings and we are going july for 2 weeks-alot dearer in the summer but only time DH off uni for 3 weeks togeather.
If it is going to make you get into debt it is not worth it as the debt will last a lot longer than the holiday. Its exciting planning the next trip anyway so if you book for next year it will still be exciting and you know how time flies.:woohoo:
Good luck with your decision though:disrocks: :disrocks: party:

hard question to answer, but from my own experience,
we have 2 hols booked this yr, within 3 months of each other, the october one is to a wedding, we couldnt cancel the july hol, otherwise we would lose all our money, so we were resigned to going twice, even though we can't afford it, but its funny though that when determination kicks in, finding the extra money becomes easier! hope all this makes sense!!:rotfl:

I wouldn't do it if it is going to financially stretch you because you just don't know what is round the corner. Far better to save up and go when you have the money behind you.

As you know, Orlando is an expensive holiday with tickets and food, clothes on top of everything else and this is the money that adds up. The last thing I would want to do is go on holiday and be worried about the money all of the time.

A lot of people never get to go, some have a holiday of a life time and others get a bit addicted :guilty: . I would value the times you have had and save up.:) The time whizzs by so quickly.

How about getting off the boards & sorting out some things to sell on Ebay - you'll be surprised how much you can make from unwanted clothes/dvds/ornaments etc. There's no time like the present as tomorrow is 10p listing day so get snapping - after all what else will you be doing with no money for a social life? :rotfl:

No, they won't be expected to go without treats. I have allowed for them to still get their pocket money, although it has to be said they don't get a great many treats anyway. The girls are going to stay with their grandparents in August (their choice - although I can't understand what the grandparents have got that WDW hasn't  ). Your kids must be a lot more understanding than mine - I can't imagine them letting Stephen and me go to Disney without them. And to be honest if I put myself in their shoes I know I would be upset if my parents went without me.

I know that Disney isn't just for kids but I couldn't imagine going to Disney without my brood now that they are here (I could imagine going before they were born but it has taken this long to convince Stephen to go to Disney! :sad2: ). If I went without them I would feel so guilty.

If I was a kid (under the age of 18) I would be very upset if my parents went to Disney without me but maybe I am just selfish. :confused3 . Even if I was going to stay with my grandparents - give most kids the choice between a few weeks with the grandparents or a week or so at Disney with their parents...

My 'kiddiewinks' are 4, 13 and 14. Believe it or not, the 13 and 14 year olds, when told that there 'may be a chance' we would be going to WDW this summer both said that, while they would like to go, they wanted to see their Grandma and they are coming with us next year anyway.

The little one, having never been, doesn't really understand what he's missing - and would probably have as good a time (if not better) at the beach being spoiled by his grandparents. He has many years of WDW trips ahead of him, at an age where he will have a better appreciation of it :)

Hi

Oh you must go as long it does not cause too many financial burdens. A few little extras being missed for a few months so you can go is worth it.

Dh and I trying to go in Nov with the children. As long as we can pay the mortgage and bills we can go without any special extras. It will be worth it when you walk into MK.

Go for it.

I think it is possible, I am doing the same thing, every spare penny goes towards our holiday, my one treat is a Starbucks coffee once a week.

I have also sold clothes that my DD has out grown of on eBay, and that money goes straight on the holiday. I am selling some of my own designer items, I decided that my holiday is more important than owning ridiculously over priced jeans (plus I could get them for half the price in Orlando! )

I also don't leave my holiday money in the bank, I pay it straight on the holiday, that way there is no temptation to order a pizza or buy a new top. even if it is just £50 it is payed on to the holiday.

Snap, totally agree. My oldest is 18 now and away at university. When we decided to book for next year, we all held our breath because we desperately wanted him to come with us, he said 'yes' straightaway much to our relief. I know there will be a time when my sons don't want to come but at the moment I am so enjoying their company. It does make it a pretty expensive holiday though!

I can't believe it. We are on the same cruise. We just have to meet up like last year. It is fate!

Definitely Sue - we'll see you on the ship then :rotfl: Are you staying at WDW before and after? How are you getting to the port?

We are staying at Saratoga Springs before and after the cruise. We are just taking the hire car down to the port and leaving it in the secure car park down there.

We are hoping to book Palos on the first night. Apparently you have to do it on line 70 days before you go, which for us I worked out to be a saturday june 9th and we have to do it at 8 o clock.

I don't think we will do any of the excusions at the Bahamas but just must go to the Hard Rock Cafe to add to our collection of glasses and t-shirts.

So excited that you will be there too. We used our DVC points for the cruise.

Haven't you got wonderful kids Joh?!?!

They have their moments Claire - I do think the excitement about going to Grandma's has a lot to do with the fact that they get loads of sweets and treats there that they're not allowed at home - and they are allowed to stay up a lot later too ;) Coupled with the fact that they miss her terribly - after living with her for 18 months, I suppose that is to be expected - it is hardly surprising that they're so excited about going there.

But, yes, on the whole, they're pretty fantastic. They know they'll get their holiday to WDW again next year, although Rea has now said that I have to take her on a DCL cruise next summer

I have been reading this thread with interest over the last couple of days, and now I'd like to comment.
To be honest I'm flabbergasted at the selfishness of the OP. The whole thread looked to me as though the OP was looking to justify yet another trip to WDW, and then in the end casually add in that none of her three children would be going on the trip!!
I'm sorry, I know I'm stepping on a few toes here, but I just had to say my piece.

Welcome to the DIS UKMousefan - it's a shame that your first post here had to be a negative one

Hello Mousefan,

I do not want to put you off from joining our happy community but please take time to get to know people before you launch a personal attack, Wilma- Bride has been a loyal member here for a long time, and if you stick around, you will get to know all the personalities here, and realise that this was not the purpose of Joh's post at all. We are a very supportive warm bunch of people here on the uk boards, and hope that you choose to join us in the same spirit, welcome to the DIS.

Joh, they are lovely messages from your girls, doesn't sound like they will be missing out all, happy planning hun xxxx

That is way out of line! Joh is a fantastic mum and her daughters themselves have said that they do not want to go! I think she knows her children better than we do. This board is about booking trips to WDW which we all love so I'm sorry but it is not appropriate to call someone selfish for booking another trip. :sad2:
