CHAPTER 1

This is my very first trip report. Well, actually, this is the pre-trip report, since we haven’t gone yet. I debated on whether to post this in Pre-Trip Reports or Trip Reports, since I don’t think I can move it around after I get started. Decided to post in Trip Reports since that is what it will be when all is said and done.

(Okay, now that I’ve read back over what I’ve written below, I guess this should officially be called a pre-pre-trip report)

It’s a small cast of characters. Only two of us. But we have enough fun for 10!!

Me, Renee (ageless)
DD, Lindsay (14)

I’ve tried to think of clever, mother-daughter, Disney-related nicknames for us. Sadly, I have realized that most Disney movie characters don’t have mothers! It’s really depressing when you think about it. :sad1: Cinderella has a stepmother, but no mother….Ariel, no mother….Snow White…no mother….Jasmine….no mother….Bambi’s mother was killed….Aurora…does she have a mother?....Okay, there’s Simba & Sarabi, but Simba is a boy, and I just don’t think of myself as a Sarabi. So, for lack of anything more creative, I’ll call us Renee & Lindsay. At least I should be able to remember that!

Let me try to get you up to speed on my tiny family and our Disney adventures up until now.

Our first trip was in 1997. It was me, DH, and DD (who was then 4, almost 5). We had not yet caught total Disney fever, so our trip consisted of the following: Stayed off-site at a timeshare, went to MK, MGM, SeaWorld, and a petting farm somewhere nearby. We were there a grand total of 3-1/2 days. It was fun. Lindsay got to meet Mickey Mouse and give him a picture she had colored for him.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/scan0001.jpg

Fast forward to July, 2003. DH had surgery for a brain aneurysm in September, 2001 (two weeks after 9/11) and as a result of the surgery, had brain damage and was mentally handicapped. I was determined to give Lindsay a good vacation, since we had not gotten to go anywhere in a couple of years. She wanted to go back to Florida, but this time, she wanted to go to Universal Studios. I really wanted to go to Disney World, but I reminded myself that I was doing this for my daughter. So, we did 3 days at US, one day at MK, and one day at the beach. Between the July heat and worrying about keeping up with DH (he was prone to wander off), it was less than a magical vacation for me. But Lindsay had fun, and that’s what mattered.

Coming up. Chapter 2….We finally get Disneyfied!!

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Unfortunately, as you will find out in my next installment, the situation with my husband did not have a happy ending. But I am focusing on the positive here, because WDW has become such a place of joy for DD and me, as you will discover.

I am planning to add pictures when I have a chance.

Thanks. We're leaving in 4 days. Most of the planning is done and I was getting antsy, so I started writing the trip report to keep me occupied. I am very excited about going to WL! It will be our first time there.

Over the next two years, DH’s health deteriorated, and he passed away in August, 2005.

After a few months, I decided that Lindsay & I needed to get away somewhere, just the two of us. We had both been through a very tough four years. I asked her where she wanted to go more than anywhere else, and she said, “Italy.” Where that came from, I have no idea, but I asked her to pick somewhere within the continental US. Her next choice (with possibly a little prompting from me) was….yes, you guessed it….Disney World!!

This was in February, 2006. I began looking at the calendar to figure out the best time to go. I didn’t want to go in the summer (too crowded and too hot), and I didn’t want to wait until November or December, so that left only one choice….Spring Break in April. Only two months away!!! Could I possibly plan a trip in that short amount of time? Well, at this point, I was still blissfully ignorant of all the planning that should go into a total Disney experience, so I booked the trip. Six nights at All Star Movies, six-day park hopper passes, no dining plan. I was glad that I didn’t discover the DIS boards until after I had booked the trip. Otherwise, I probably would have been in panic mode trying to plan the trip in such a short amount of time. But everything worked out beautifully!! There’s really not that much planning you have to do for two people. We didn’t make any ADRs…ate mostly counter service…but were able to do a couple of TS restaurants with only a short wait. It worked out perfectly for us. Our main focus was having fun at the parks. Eating was just something we did when we got hungry. One day we were at Epcot and had been walking around several hours and were absolutely famished! We got some Chicken McNuggets and french fries at the McDonalds stand near Canada. I must have really been starving, because those McNuggets tasted sooooo good!

For the first three days of our trip, I meticulously planned which parks we would go to, how long we would stay there, what we would ride, etc. We stuck to that plan pretty much, with maybe a few variations. For the final three days, we decided where we would go either the night before, or when we woke up the next morning.

We both fell madly in love with all things Disney, and before the trip was halfway over, we were trying to decide when to return.

Over the next few months, we relived our wonderful memories and talked about “when we go back” but didn’t really have a definite timeframe in mind for returning. Lindsay would ask me occasionally, and I would just say, “Some day.”

Right around Christmas time, I started really thinking about going back. On Christmas afternoon, I told Lindsay I had one more gift for her. I said, “How would you like to go back to Disney World during Spring Break?” Needless to say, she was thrilled!! This will be the last year that she has a late April Spring Break. School will be starting later next year, so they are cutting out Winter Break in February. Her Spring Break will more than likely be in March, so this may be our last year of light crowds.

I had thought about trying to keep the trip a secret from Lindsay until the last minute, but decided not to. For one thing, I’m horrible at keeping secrets, and for another, Lindsay loves the anticipation almost as much as the trip itself.

I’m not one for making long-term plans. I would go crazy if I had to wait a year or longer while planning a trip like some of you do. I don’t even think I could last six months! At least this time, I had four months to plan instead of just two!

I had decided this time we would upgrade to a moderate resort. We looked them all over and decided on CBR. I priced out all the options and knew we could afford it, but something was keeping me from booking it. Every time I would start to pick up the phone or hit that button on the computer, something would tell me not to. I thought maybe I needed to look closer at the other moderates to make sure that CBR was where we wanted to stay, so I started reading the Resort boards on the DIS a little bit closer and ran across the Wilderness Lodge FAQ thread. After reading only a few pages, I knew where we were going to stay! Before I could change my mind, I reserved a room through Travelocity. I wish I had called CRO & checked prices with them first. Travelocity was cheaper than what I was coming up with on the Disney web site, but maybe I could have gotten a better deal by calling. Oh well, it’s paid for now. Next up was making airline reservations. Last year, we flew out of Shreveport (about 75 miles away). Flights out of Texarkana, where we live, are usually at least $100 more per person, but I decided to check on it anyway. It was the same price as Shreveport!! So now, we only have to drive about 6 miles to the airport, make a connecting flight in Houston, then it’s off to the Land of Mickey!

I still didn’t make any ADRs this time. We have so much fun in the parks, that I don’t want to take a chance on having to tear ourselves away from something we are enjoying immensely and rush to meet a reservation. Since we are staying at WL, we are going to try to slip in a late afternoon visit to Whispering Canyon.

We do have a couple of special things planned. A member of the Community Board on TGM was offering two spaces on a Wishes Cruise on Monday, the 23rd. Of all the things we love about Disney, Wishes is our favorite!! Kim, I don’t know if you are on these boards or not, but we’ll see you Monday!! And on Thursday, the 26th, we are going to the DIS Gathering at MK. So for those of you who will be there, I am looking forward to meeting you! And if we show up with sad faces, it’s because it will be the last day of our vacation.

In less than 48 hours, we will be on our way!!!.

So, everything is finally packed. A friend is keeping our parakeet. Our Chihuahuas have checked in at Hotel Westridge (the veterinarian clinic). That’s one of the only bad things about going away. I hate leaving my babies.

Oh, and this year, we are also leaving Lindsay’s sad boyfriend behind (sorry Josh, we’ll bring you something special back). Will they be able to make it a week without seeing each other? Something tells me the cell phone will get a workout next week. Thank goodness for nationwide long distance & no roaming!

So, it’s off to bed for me in a couple of hours. I’ve got to get up at 4:00, get ready, load the car up, and get to the airport by 5:30 for our 6:25 light.

Day 1, Part 1

I got up bright and early (well, just early…it certainly wasn’t bright yet) at 4:00. Got Lindsay up, finished loading the car and were on our way by 5:15. Stopped at McDonalds to pick up breakfast. Considering the events that unfolded throughout the day, it’s a good thing we decided to get breakfast. We arrived at the airport around 5:30.

Our flight to Houston left promptly and uneventfully at 6:25. At some point during the flight, one of my contact lenses popped out. The dry air immediately dried the lens out and there was no way I could get it back in without wetting solution. My solution and extra lenses were in my suitcase. So I resigned myself to being half blind until I get to Orlando.

About 45 minutes into the flight, it seemed like we began flying around in circles, then the captain comes over the intercom and the first words out of his mouth are “I’ve got bad news.” Now believe me, when you are 16,000 feet in the air in a turbo prop plane, those are the last words you want to hear. It seems that the airport in Houston was fogged in and visibility was less than 250 feet. He said we would possibly have to divert to another airport to refuel. About 15 minutes later, he told us that things in Houston were only getting worse, so we were going to divert to Alexandria, LA to refuel and wait for the fog to clear up. We were on the ground for about 2 hours, along with around 15 other commuter planes. We got to know our pilot on a first name basis (Hi, Steve). We were finally able to get back under way at 10:00 and got to Houston at 11:00 – 30minutes after our connecting flight to Orlando departed. I was beginning to think we were never going to make it to Disney World. Do you ever have dreams where you are trying so hard to get somewhere, but things just keep happening to keep you from getting there? That’s how I felt…like I was in a bad dream.

Luckily, I found out there was another flight to Orlando leaving at 11:28, in only 20 minutes. We rushed to the gate and got in line for standby. I think we were the next to last ones to get seats. Our seats weren’t together, but at that point, I would have sat in the toilet the whole way. Lindsay’s seatmates slept the whole flight. Mine were going to some kind of technology conference and they talked to each other the whole flight about their job. They were speaking English, but I barely understood a word they said!

We arrived in Orlando at 3:00. At some point during the flight, it occurred to me that our luggage probably didn’t make it on the flight with us. I was right. It didn’t. Another flight was due in at 4:20, but I went ahead and filed a claim, just in case. I went downstairs to make arrangements for our rental car and stood in my first line of the week. By the time I got done with that, it was time to go back up and check on the luggage. Lindsay’s suitcase is bright pink, so we knew it would be easy to spot. We stood at the carousel and waited…and waited. Finally, Lindsay said, “There it is!!” Thank goodness!! I was beginning to have visions of sleeping in my clothes. I was also pretty nervous about driving with only one contact. The first think I did was drag my suitcase over to a seating area and find my contacts. Ahh, I could see again!

We picked up our car and headed out of the airport. I finally felt like we were actually going to make it! We arrived at Wilderness Lodge at 5:30, only about 2-1/2 hours later than planned. For all that we had been through, I thought that wasn’t too bad.

Thanks to all of you for reading my report.

Yeah, those turbo props are something else. Since I probably won't cover the trip home in my trip report, I'll go ahead & tell this funny little story. When we got on the plane for the trip from Houston to Texarkana, the pilot was in the cockpit giving the co-pilot instructions on how to fly the plane! And the co-pilot was the one who flew us home! I must say, though, we had a very smooth landing. I barely felt when the wheels touched ground.

Part 2 of Day 1 is coming up soon (as soon as I can get my pictures organized).

Day 1, Part 2

Everyone says what an awe-inspiring thing it is the first time you walk into the lobby of Wilderness Lodge, and they are right! It is such an incredible sight.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00941.jpg

We walked right up to check in without a wait. The CM was very efficient and before we knew it, we were on our way. He didn’t mention anything about an upgrade, but at this point, I didn’t care. I was just happy and excited to be here, finally!!

Our room was on the 5th floor. With all the twists and turns we made getting to our room, I couldn’t tell which direction we were facing. The first thing I did when we walked into the room was open the curtains & walk out on the balcony.

This is the sight that greeted me:

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00720.jpg

Upgraded to Courtyard view!! Wow!! I was just hoping for a woods view upgrade. This was incredible! It was far enough away from the pool that it wasn’t noisy at all. We could crack the balcony door and hear the rushing water from Silver Creek Falls.

By this time, we were absolutely starving. All we had eaten since breakfast was airline pretzels. We did the quickest thing possible…we ate at Roaring Fork. I think that was the best burger I’d ever eaten. Funny how much better food tastes when you are really hungry. Lindsay had the cheese pizza. We also got our refillable mugs.

We knew that Magic Kingdom closed at 7:00 that night for Grad Nite. Our original plans were go to MK first for a couple of hours so we could ride our favorite ride (Splash Mountain) first, then head over to MGM to see Fantasmic. By the time we finished eating, it was getting close to 7:00, so we decided to start off our vacation at MGM.

When we walked in the gates, we realized that this was where everyone must have gone when MK closed. You could barely walk. The wait for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was too long and the fast passes were all gone. And after last year, Lindsay had sworn never to step foot on Tower of Terror again (more on that later). So we rode Star Tours. There were two showings of Fantasmic that night and our plan was to go to the second show at 10:00. Here’s the obligatory hat picture, sorry it’s a little blurry.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00741.jpg

By 9:30, the crowds and the events of the day had overwhelmed us, so we decided to call it a night. We had to wait forever for a bus and it was incredibly crowded. I began to think we may use rental car more than originally planned. We were in bed by 10:30.

Chapter 6
Day 2, Part 1

I woke up at 6:45. Lindsay was already up and in the shower  We got ready and had breakfast at Roaring Fork. I think we both got the breakfast platter. After our experience with the bus the night before, I decided to drive the rental car today.

Without really planning to, we managed to hit three parks today (the park hopper option was made for people like me)! We made it to Animal Kingdom at 9:00 just after opening, and it was already getting crowded. Got a fast pass for Expedition: Everest and rode on standby (wait was only about 15 minutes). Then Lindsay talked me into riding Primeval Whirl. I’m not much for spinning, so this isn’t my favorite ride! We rode EE again with our fast pass. By this time, for some reason, we were both ready to leave AK.

We were going to MK that evening for EMH, so we weren’t quite ready to go there yet. We decided to go to Epcot. We did several things this trip that we had not done before. Our first “first” was Test Track. We rode Nemo, then saw Turtle Talk with Crush. I love the new location and queue area for this. Then we walked around World Showcase and ate lunch at Liberty Inn. Another new thing for us this year was Maelstrom. It was closed last year when we were there. We rode Spaceship Earth on the way out, which was another first. We both really enjoyed this ride. I'm glad we got to ride it before they change it. We left Epcot around 4:00 and went back to our room to rest for a while. Here are a few pictures from Epcot.

Day 2, Part 2

Somewhere around 6:00, we took the boat to MK. It’s our favorite park and the last one we went to. I had begun to wonder if this year was going to have the same magic as last year and walking through the gates of MK did it for me. There’s just something about that castle!

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00796.jpg

Our first stop was Aloha Isle for a Dole Whip float! Yes, I took a picture of it!

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01095.jpg

Splash Mountain had a 50 minute wait, so we got fast passes. We backtracked to Pirates of the Caribbean. It had a 30-minute wait, so we got in line and rode it. I loved the changes! I managed to get one fairly good picture. I didn’t use my flash (unlike the nice lady in front of me).

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00805.jpg

We walked around a little then rode Splash with our fast passes. It was dark by this time, and the water was cold!!

Lindsay was hungry, so we went in search of something to eat. Stopped along the way and got our wristbands for EMH. We ended up at Cosmic Rays where she got a hot dog. I made her hurry so we wouldn’t miss Wishes.

Wishes!! There was the magic! I teared up as soon as the first note played. Ever since seeing it for the first time last year, this has been the one event that says “Disney” to us. Our Wishes cruise was going to be the next evening, but I’m glad we saw it up close first. I took a ton of pictures, hoping to get a few good ones. I know I really need a tripod, but I did end up with a few good ones.

SEE WHAT A LITTLE WISHIN' CAN DO?

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00878.jpg

Peter Pan’s Flight was something else we had never done, so after Wishes, we went over and got fast passes, then went to Mickey’s Philharmagic. Stopped at Sleepy Hollow and got a funnel cake. We walked over to Space Mountain, but didn’t ride because the wait was too long and we already had fast passes, so couldn’t get more. We walked around a little and ended up back at Space Mountain, which was down to a 30 minute wait, so we got in line. The wait seemed much longer than 30 minutes. This year’s evening EMH was much more crowded than the one we went to last year. Last year we could virtually walk on anything. We then rode Peter Pan’s Flight. I thought it was really neat, but it didn’t last long enough.

We were both pretty tired by then, so we left before the park closed. We rode the boat back to WL. We had towel animals when we got back in the room! Made it to bed by about 1:30.

Subscribing!! Great trip report so far. I'm so sorry to hear about your husband.

We are staying at the WL in November, our first family trip.

We will have our car there, do you recommend driving to the parks (except MK, since you can boat over) or did you prefer the busses?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both car and bus. I would say definitely take the boat or bus to MK. As for the other parks, I found that if we stayed until park closing, the buses were crowded and one night at EPCOT, we had to wait for the third bus. When we drove, we were always lucky and the tram usually let us off very near the row we were parked in. I'm sure it does not always turn out that way, though.

Day 3, Part 1

We slept in this morning since we were up so late the night before. I got up at about 8:45, took a shower and updated my notes for my trip report (you didn’t think I was doing this all by memory, did you?). I woke Lindsay up and she got ready and we went to breakfast at Whispering Canyon Café. Since it was so late (about 10:30 by now) we got right in without ADRs. We both got the skillet. And you know you can’t have potatoes without ketchup! Lindsay held out as long as she could, then she couldn’t stand it any more and had to ask. We must have broken the ice, because then everyone started asking for it.

After breakfast, we drove the rental car to MGM. Our first ride was Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Lindsay decided to ham it up for the camera, so I had to buy the picture.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/rrc.jpg

She still refused to ride Tower of Terror, so I rode it by myself. She at least did go through the queue with me. Last year, I talked her into riding it. Apparently, she didn’t tighten the seat belt enough. When we dropped, she said she felt like she was going to fall out, and she swore she would never get on it again. So far, she was staying true to her word. Maybe I’ll talk her into it before the week is over.

We walked back toward the center of the park and noticed that an area was roped off with lots of cameras. There was a guy from the Disney Channel and he was interviewing two of the stars of High School Musical (the actual movie, not the pep rally). We didn’t get to meet them, but Lindsay was excited just to get to see them.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00889.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00893.jpg

We went on the Backlot Tour and rode the Great Movie Ride. We left MGM at about 3:00 and went to Downtown Disney to look around. We decided to go offsite to eat. Bad decision! We were wishing we were back at Disney the whole time. We stopped at CVS to pick up some Aleve. My hips and back had been killing me from all the walking. I found that taking an Aleve at the beginning of the day really helped.

We went back to the room to rest a little. Lindsay wanted to know if she could go down to the Mercantile, and I said okay. When she got back, she gave me a box and said it was an early Mother’s Day present. It was a watch that I had been admiring earlier. She spent half of her spending money on it. Did I mention what an awesome daughter she is?

Next up…..Wishes Cruise!!!!

Day 3, Part 2

At 7:45, we rode the boat to MK and caught the monorail to the Poly. Lindsay & I took pictures of each other on the boat.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00909-1.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00908-1.jpg

This was the night for our Wishes cruise. About three months before our trip, a poster on the TGM Community board offered two spaces on their Wishes cruise. As I have said before, Wishes is very special to both Lindsay and I. I contacted Kim and told her I wanted the spaces. She and her family were going to be celebrating the renewal of their wedding vows. We met them at the marina at about 8:45. Our boat arrived around 9:00. We went over first and cruised around Bay Lake. Our skipper showed us the shoe tree and River Country. Then we stopped in front of Wilderness Lodge and watched the Electric Water Parade. This was the first time I had ever seen it and was the only thing I took pictures of that night. I decided I just wanted to sit back and enjoy the cruise.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00934.jpg

There were several boats out on the lagoon. One was pretty large and Captain Hook and Smee were the hosts! They were singing and sounded like they were having a great time.

The weather was perfect…just a little breezy…temps probably in the mid to upper 60s. Lindsay and I wrapped up in a blanket. Then it was time for Wishes!! Our boat had the music piped in. The fireworks looked so much bigger from this perspective. It was so nice and relaxing without all the crowds. I hated to see it end. We made our way back to the Poly and said goodbye to Kim and her family. It was so nice of them to share what was a very special time for them with two total strangers.

Lindsay and I looked around the Poly for a few minutes. She decided she wanted to stay there next time. On the monoral, I also noticed her eyeing the Grand Floridian. She has very expensive taste. I'm afraid the values just aren't going to cut it for her any more.

We got back to WL at about 11:00, had a snack, and went to bed.

Day 4

We got up at 7:00 and made it to Magic Kingdom in time to see our very first opening ceremony.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00952.jpg

You really can get a lot done if you get there early. We rode Splash Mountain, BTMRR, Pirates, Space Mountain, then picked up fast passes to ride Space Mountain again.

We went to the bakery on Main Street for breakfast and stood in our longest line of the day. Seriously, it took about 30 minutes. Lindsay got a breakfast sandwich and I had a cinnamon roll (yummmm).

We went back and rode Space Mountain with our fast passes. The standby line wasn’t very long, so Lindsay rode it again by herself. I was all “spaced” out by now and didn’t want to ride it again. We rode Buzz Lightyear, then made our way back to the castle. I got this good shot of Lindsay on the way.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00953.jpg

We watched the last half of Dream Along With Mickey.

This is one of my favorite pictures:

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00971.jpg

After that we headed back for Splash Mountain again. The line was pretty long, so we got fast passes. It was a warm day, which sounded like a good excuse for a Dole Whip! It’s no longer just a tradition, it’s a necessity!!

After we finished our Dole Whips, we decided to ride Jungle Cruise. This ride can either be good or bad, depending on the skipper you get. I guess you could say that this one was in between. Oh well, it passed the time until we could ride Splash with our fast passes. On the way to Splash, we saw Captain Jack!!

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC00972.jpg

We still hadn’t seen Fantasmic, so at about 3:30, we decided to go to MGM and finish our day there. We rode the bus back to WL and caught the bus to MGM. First, we stopped in at Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater to see if we could get in without ADRs. We were able to get right in with no wait (this should have been our first clue that something was wrong). We both got burgers, which were very good. We overheard our waiter tell someone that the park closed at 7:00 that evening for a private party. That meant no Fantasmic. That’s what I get for not checking the updated schedules before I left home. Oh well, we were flexible.

We rode RNRC a couple of times and I rode Tower of Terror by myself once (Lindsay still wasn’t budging).

We had actually never seen Illuminations before, so we decided to do that. At about 7:00 we rode the boat from MGM to Epcot. It was a slow ride because we stopped at all the Epcot resorts, but we weren’t in any hurry. It was good to just slow down a little and relax.

When we got to Epcot, we went to check on the wait time for Soarin’. It was 55 minutes and all the fast passes were gone by then, of course, so we decided not to wait. We walked over to Mexico and rode the boat ride. I was okay with the changes. From there, we stopped in at the Kringla Bakery in Norway. I had heard all the rave reviews about the schoolbread and I wanted to try it. We also got some lefse. The schoolbread was incredible! I am a coconut lover, so I was in heaven. The lefse was okay, but kind of bland after the richness of the schoolbread.

We had found a spot to wait for Illuminations, then I realized that there was going to be a tree right in the way, so we moved & found another spot. We actually managed to find a bench to sit on (near China, I think).

We enjoyed Illuminations, but it will never be as special as Wishes in my eyes.

On our way out of the park, we stopped in at Mouse Gear. Lindsay had been looking for some pink Disney crocs and finally found them in here.

The bus stop was very crowded and we had to wait for the third bus back to WL. It was another long day, and we fell into bed when we got back to our room.

Day 5, Part 1

We drove the rental car today and stopped for breakfast at McDonalds on the way to Animal Kingdom. As we were driving down the road, all of a sudden, Lindsay said, “I’ll ride it.” It took me a second to realize that we had just passed the big Tower of Terror sign, and that’s what she was talking about. I started to turn around right then and go to MGM before she could change her mind, but I didn’t.

At AK, we rode EE one last time. Even though AK is probably my least favorite park, EE is one of my favorite rides. After that, we decided to ride Kali River Rapids. We had never ridden this before, mainly because I knew I would get soaked. I am a water magnet! But it was early in the day and it was warm, so I figured I would have plenty of time to dry off. Sure enough, guess who got soaked? But I did enjoy the ride. Actually, I thought it was a little short. It ended before I expected it to.

I wanted to get some tiger pictures, so we went on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. We saw the Komodo Dragon and the Tapir. We decided to skip the bats. It was nappy time for the tigers, but I did get a few pictures.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01034.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01039.jpg

We then left AK and went to Downtown Disney. Lindsay bought some souvenirs for Josh. She got leather bracelets for both of them, with his name on her bracelet and her name on his. Then they broke up less than a week after we got home. It's a long story.

Totally OT here: When I typed the word souvenirs, my spell checker kept telling me it was spelled wrong. I kept switching letters around and finally Googled it. I would have bet money that it was spelled souveniers.

We ate lunch at McDonalds in DTD, then it was on to MGM.

Coming up in Chapter 12: Will Lindsay actually ride Tower of Terror?

Thanks!

On any still surface I can find... I've held the legs together and used the top of a baby stroller before; set up on a garbage can; for one GLORIOUS evening, I was able to sit on the ground and set up like a real person for Hallowishes!

My tripod is small, fully extended it's only2-3 feet tall, so it gives me a little more flexibility, I think. That and it collapses small enough to fit inside my camera bag (only increasing the weight by about 15 tons...) ;)

Day 5, Part 2

Lindsay still hadn’t chickened out of riding ToT, but she wanted to ride RNRC first, so we did. Then it was time. Luckily, there wasn’t much of a wait, so she didn’t have time to talk herself out of it. As soon as we sat down, she grabbed on to my arm and held on for dear life. By the time we made the first drop, she was squeezing so tight, the blood supply to my arm was cut off. Hence, the look on my face in the picture. It’s not from fear, it’s from pain! All of a sudden, in the middle of the third drop, she let go of me and said, “Hey, this is fun!” We ended up riding it at least 6 more times before the day was over.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/scan0002.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/scan0002a.jpg

Look what we discovered later while looking at the picture. This guy was holding a box of fries and a drink!! If the box wasn’t empty when the ride started, it was when it was over.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/fries.jpg

Lindsay wanted to ride Star Tours one more time (she has some strange fascination for this ride), so we made our way over there. Toward the end of the queue, there was a storm trooper statue that I didn’t remember seeing before. I was looking at it pretty intently, marveling at how realistic it looked. Just as I got even with the “statue,” it jumped in front of me. I screamed bloody murder and lost about ten years off my life. Lindsay found it rather humorous. She was in front of me and had seen him move and was about to turn around and tell me he was real when he jumped at me. All I can say is, I’m glad I don’t have a heart condition, although after that, I wasn’t so sure I didn’t. As we moved on, we could hear other unsuspecting victims screaming behind us. I’ll bet that guy loves his job!

We then went to see Beauty & the Beast for the very first time. If you love the movie, you’ll love the show. I was very pleasantly surprised by the group that sang before the show, Four For A Dollar. They were very good. I Googled them (Google is my friend) and discovered that outside of Disney World, they sing under the name “Return 2 Zero.”

We got in one last ride on RNRC and ToT before heading into the theater for Fantasmic. We went in as soon as they opened the gates so we could get good seats. We got hot dogs to eat while waiting. Then, of course, we all did the Wave. You can’t go to Fantasmic without doing the Wave. The wait for Fantasmic is a fun, relaxing time for me. The crowd is always in a good mood, and you end up talking to and getting to know the people sitting around you. There was an adorable little red-haired girl near me (probably not quite 2 years old) who shared her Cheerios with Lindsay and me.

I love Fantasmic!! Do I love it as much as Wishes? I don’t know, that’s hard to say. They are different, but they both give me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. And I get tears in my eyes when I hear the music from either one. I was really upset because I left my camera in the car, so I didn’t get any pictures of Fantasmic. Oh well, my heart took plenty of pictures.

We got back to the lodge pretty early for a change. We got to see the end of the American Idol results show (that was the week that no one went home). Lindsay wanted to go for a swim at least once. We were always too busy during the day. So we went down to the pool. It was a little cool, so we didn’t stay long. We picked up snacks at Roaring Fork, then went to bed.

Up next: Fockers of the World (Disney World, that is), unite!!

Day 6, Part 1

This was a very bittersweet day for us. Lots of fun things happened, but we knew it was our last day, so every time we would do something, knowing it was the last time, we would give each other sad little looks.

We rode the bus to MK and made it there about 8:30. This was the big day! The Grand Focker (can I still use that word?) Gathering! I think we were the first to make it to the Walt & Mickey statue, but soon the place was a sea of lime green. Well, maybe more like a large pond. I’m not going to try to name everyone who was there, because I know I will forget someone. I’m sure Zdad will cover them all in his trip report (right, John?). I do want to say a big Thank You to Zdad for organizing the get-together. He & Laurie are the kind of people that you meet and instantly feel like you have known forever. We all spent about 15 minutes around the statue getting acquainted and waiting for everyone to arrive.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01054.jpg

I’m not sure whether this CM was trying to give me Mickey ears or what, but I had no idea he was there for the longest.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/04_26_07_023__Large_.jpg

When everyone arrived, we had a group picture taken by the Photopass photographer. (If any of you are reading this & are opposed to having your picture on the internet, let me know & I will take it off.)

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/04_26_07_035__Large_.jpg

Then we made our way to Jungle Cruise. When we got there, we discovered that the ride didn’t open until 10:00, so we stood around getting acquainted a little more.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01061.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01062.jpg

They actually opened the ride about 10-15 minutes early, and we all made it on the 2nd boat. I was a little apprehensive about this ride, because in our ride earlier in the week, we didn’t get the best skipper in the world. But I need not have worried. Bill WAS the best skipper in the world!! He was totally into it. He made us all feel like special guests and we made him an honorary Focker.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01066.jpg

As icing on the cake, Lindsay was chosen to be guest skipper, much to her dismay at first, but she finally got into it.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/04_26_07_059__Large_.jpg

The entire ride was a blast, and I hated to see it end. We all said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.

Oh yes…many thanks to Zdad and to Del n Judy for the pics they sent, some of which were featured in today's report.

I was going to post an update tonight, but I'm still in deep shock over Melinda getting voted off of American Idol.

I'll just post this one picture of Lindsay. She got these pirate Mickey ears earlier in the week at World of Disney. We saw these ears in nearly every store we went to, but everyone, including cast members, wanted to know where we got them, because they had never seen any like them.

She wore them all day on our last day and got lots of compliments.

In the picture, I guess she thinking that this is our last day, and is feeling kinda sad.

Day 6, Part 2

After the DIS Gathering, we headed to Splash Mountain for a ride. I don’t think the hopping Brer Rabbit was working last year (right before you get to the Laughing Place). This year is the first time I remember seeing it. I thought maybe it was just me, but Lindsay said she didn’t remember it, either. I think Lindsay’s favorite part of the ride is the FSU weasel, or gopher, or whatever he is.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01069.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01071.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01074.jpg

We ate lunch at Pecos Bill’s and decided to go to Epcot for a little while because we still hadn’t ridden Soarin’.

Lindsay wanted me to take this picture on the way out. Can you guess why? Believe it or not, she plays tuba in the marching band. There were a couple of football games that were pretty windy, and I was afraid she was going to blow away.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01100.jpg

We rode the monorail to Epcot. My camera’s memory stick was almost full, so I took it by the Camera Center to have the pictures transferred to CD. I had taken so many pictures that it took two CDs. We went to The Land and got fast passes for Soarin’. The return time was 4:55, so it looked like we would be spending the afternoon at Epcot.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01109.jpg

We had both been trying to work up the nerve to ride Mission: Space and finally decided to do it. We decided to do Orange Team. I’m not a big fan of spinning, but if I was going to ride, I wanted to get the whole experience. Lindsay decided at the last minute not to ride. I’m really glad I rode it. It’s not something I could ride over and over, but I did enjoy it. Then Lindsay and I rode on the Green Team, and I was surprised. It was almost as good as the more intense version.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01110.jpg

After that, Lindsay got what I guess you could call a mini-Dream. She got in line to buy a Mickey ice cream sandwich, and the CM told her if she could answer a Disney trivia question, she would get it for free. It was an easy question (what was the monkey’s name in Lion King), so she got a free ice cream sandwich. Not a night in the castle, but a special moment just the same (I think it was those pirate ears again).

We strolled around World Showcase.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01112.jpg

When we made it back around, we got some of those awesome Chicken McNuggets. Remember the ones I was talking about at the first of my report that were so awesome last year, because we were about to starve? They were still just as good this year.

We went to see Turtle Talk then it was finally time for our ride on Soarin’. This is such a relaxing ride. On our way out of the park, we rode Spaceship Earth one last time. This has become one of our new favorite rides.

We rode the bus to WL and went to our room to change clothes. No time to rest, this is our last day!

Thanks for the compliment on the picture. When Lindsay saw Tigger she started running to him and he stooped down and opened his arms and she just flew into them. That was when the characters just walked around.

Day 6, Part 3

Of course, we had to finish our trip at Magic Kingdom. We rode the bus because it was faster than the boat. We ate pizza at Pinocchio Village Haus and waved to the people on It’s a Small World. This was fun. If you wave, someone will always wave back.

I had promised Lindsay earlier in the week that if she would ride Tower of Terror with me, I would ride the teacups with her. Now, as you may recall, I am not a fan of spinning. Well, now I had to make good on my promise. I spent most of the ride taking pictures so that hopefully I wouldn’t realize I was spinning.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01172.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01174.jpg

Lindsay wanted Splash Mountain to be our last ride, so off we went. The wait was 60 minutes. Did I mention that MK was very crowded that night? I knew it would be because there were two Spectros and the next night was Grad Nite, but MK has to be our last park…no negotiating. Since the park was open until 11:00, we decided to come back after Wishes and try again. The wait for BTMRR was much shorter (20 minutes), so we rode that instead. It is fun to ride this after dark. It’s like a totally different ride.

Speaking of dark, has anyone else noticed how dark it is walking around at MK at night? I haven’t noticed this so much at MGM or Epcot (although I haven’t walked around much after dark at Epcot), but it is so dark at MK, I was afraid I was going to trip over something or run into someone.

On our way back to the hub for Wishes, we stopped to watch Spectromagic. Spectro is just all right for me, dawg (that was my Randy Jackson impersonation). We really had no plans to see it this time, but we either had to stop and watch it, or push our way through the crowds.

Lindsay and I gave each other our sad puppy dog faces all through Wishes. In retrospect, maybe it is not such a good idea to do Wishes on our last night. It is supposed to make us happy, and here it was making us sad.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01217.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s270/Renee1061/DSC01249.jpg

After Wishes, we headed back toward Splash Mountain. The wait was shorter this time, so we rode it.

And suddenly, that was it. It was time to leave. We walked through the park and out the gate slowly, trying to soak up enough magic to last until our next visit. We rode the boat back to WL, trying to prolong the magic just a little longer. As the boat pulled away from the dock, I looked back as Cinderella’s Castle faded in the distance and began to dream about “the next time.”

I don’t want to end with details about packing and going back to the “real” world, so this is where my report will end. I will have one more installment with some final, random thoughts. Then it will be time to start keeping notes for my next pre-trip report (Lindsay’s Sweet Sixteen).

Thanks to all of you who have joined me & Lindsay in reliving our journey to our new home away from home, Wilderness Lodge.

I have SO enjoyed reading your TR!! I'm very sorry about the loss of your husband. You and your daughter are very obviously bright spirits and it's great to see you both enjoying the magic of Disney together. It's a healing place. I truly believe that!! Lindsay is SUCH a beautiful girl!!! Just like her Mom!! :goodvibes I LOVE her pirate ears!! I've never seen Pirate ears that SOPHISTICATED!!! I've only ever seen the red stripey ones!! I'm going to have to find me a pair of those this August!!!pirate: VERY COOL!!!

I love LOVE your pics of Wishes!! They were GREAT!! Wishes is my favorite thing at Disney, hands down! When I was on my honeymoon last year, my husband and I managed to make it back to MK for Wishes every single night we were there! I love it. I always cry when I watch it. It's just SO Disney and magical!!

I was so excited to see pics of Wilderness Lodge!! We arrive "home" in August. I love it there. It's my favorite resort!! I finally convinced my husband to go DVC at Wilderness Lodge Villas!!!:cool1: :woohoo:

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. It's too bad that Lindsay and her boyfriend broke up so soon after your return. But that is teen-aged love...intense and fleeting!

Hope you are both doing well and finding joy in each day!!:goodvibes

Thanks! I hope both of you have as much fun as we did!!

Thanks for reading!! Do you know when they will announce the package prices for 2008? I'd like to get ours booked as soon as possible so I can start paying on it.

I keep reading on here that they should come out around June/July or maybe even August/September:scared1: I hope it's June/July. I'm so anxious!!

Since I am nearing the end of my report :sad1: , I thought I would post one of my favorite pictures from our first trip, in 1997.

That picture is so adorable! Sad to see your trip report ending but happy your planning another trip. Planning another makes the PDD a bit better doesn't it? My DD and DS are sooo ready for our trip, but we have 4 month to go :sad2: .

Then we made our way to Jungle Cruise. When we got there, we discovered that the ride didn’t open until 10:00, so we stood around getting acquainted a little more.

Let me get this straight...this is a DIS group meeting and nobody knew that Jungle Cruise didn't open until 10:00. :confused3 I thought DIS'ers knew everything, OMG what has the world come to. :scared1:

I'm loving your TR by the way, and your daughter is just adorable. I'm glad you both had a great time.

Outstanding trip Report! Seemed like a home run all the way around. So glad we were there for Captain Lindsay's Great Adventure. (Thank goodness she didn't sink the boat !!!:scared1:)

Best "Wishes" to you. We'll be in WDW sometime next year too. No telling when at this point, but I have a mental note to check and see if any of my Focker Watcher friends will be there too !

Peace,
Z

Thanks for reading!! Can't wait to read the rest of your report!!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I t can't be over :sad2:
Oh, well get planning and start your pre-trippie for the next one:rolleyes:

We always do MK on our last night too. We didn't plan it that way the first couple of trips, it just happened. Now we must spend our last night there. I think it is becasue it has the most magic about it, but you are correct when you say it makes us sad too.

Believe it or not, I have already started taking notes for my next pre-trip report. Nothing detailed, just little thoughts here & there.

Okay, I'm ready now to post my final thoughts/remarks.

1. The last week in April was much more crowded this year than it was last year. Next year, we will be going in June, so we will have to plan our time even more carefully and creatively.

2. The weather was perfect this year. Perfect temperatures and I don’t remember feeling a single raindrop. I know that’s not a good thing for the people who live there, but it was wonderful for us.

3. This year was not quite as magical as last year, partly due to larger crowds, but it was still wonderful and I can’t wait to go back!

4. I LOVED Wilderness Lodge!! If I were being practical, I would say that it really wasn’t worth the extra money for the short amount of time we actually spent at the lodge. But I’m not practical and it WAS worth it! Thinking about doing a split stay next year—first half of stay at Pop and second half at WL. Then again, we may stay at WL the whole time. I've got a whole year to talk myself into it!! :thumbsup2

5. One thing we didn’t make time for that I wish we would have—renting a SeaRaycer. Something to add to the list for next time.

6. Magic Kingdom is my favorite place in the World! I could spend my entire vacation there and be perfectly happy. LOVE the smell of Main Street!

7. Despite our best efforts to be in the right place at the right time, we did not win a night in the Castle.

8. Going home is so depressing. Going back to work is even more depressing. When I hit the deepest part of my depression, I told myself I’m never going back because it’s too hard to leave and come back to the real world. But here I am, only a little more than a month later, already planning my next trip! :yay:

I may add to this as I have more thoughts. Thanks again to all who have shared our journey!!!

Thanks again for sharing your vacation. I really enjoyed the thread and your pics were great. WL is my favorite resort and I have no desire to stay anywhere else so I say go for it and stay there the whole trip next year. You work hard and you deserve it!! Also consider renting one of the studios from an owner. Weekdays are around $120 / night and weekend (Fri,Sat) are around $240 at $10 /pt, although points are going up to around $12 this year. You can still do the ME and add the DDP if you'd like. I own and absolutely love going back to my "Home Away From Home" a couple times a year.
Thanks Again for sharing;)

Renee- Thank you sooooo much for sharing your trip and your final thoughts with us!!! Boy can I relate to the last part of your thoughts!!! I start getting depressed 2 days before we leave and then I cry when we actually start driving away!!!! What is wrong with me!!!;) But I have learned to start planning as soon as we hit the I-95!!!!:goodvibes Look out world, we are returning March 29 to celebrate my 40th birthday and Brandon's 12th!!! Okay, my birthday is the 6th of March, but I don't want to be there for the Easter madness!!!!:woohoo:

Yes Renee - the villas are themed just like the lodge and if I may say so - I think just a little cosier. The elevator doors and the wood floors in the Villas lobby are beautiful. And best part is that the lodge is just a two minute walk away so you can still use all their facilites as well and fill up your refillable mugs and sit by the big fireplace if you'd like. The villas have two of their own smaller firelplaces and I prefer the jacuzzi and the pool if the pool at the lodge is getting too crowded. I love to walk from the villas over to the campgrounds in the morning on the nature trail to see all the wildlife (deer, rabbits, turkeys) and then check out the horses and petting zoo at the campgrounds. With the studio, you get a small frig, microwave, toaster and coffee pot. Either way (WL or WLV) you'll have a great time. Thanks again for sharing all the fun!!!

Renee,

Just found your trip report. I really enjoyed it. Your dd is too cute! I love the Pirate Ears. My dd said, "Look she is wearing one of the nine pieces of eight!" (from the new movie!)

My DH grew up in Texarkana on the ARKANSAS side.

My DD9 was born at Wadley Hospital just like her Daddy.

DH and I were married at Beech Street way back in 1991.

His mom and dad still go to church there. I think she has taught 9th grade girls' Sunday School for about 40 years.

We are living in Little Rock now and have been here for about 7 years.

Thanks again for posting your report!

What a great trip report. I am so sad it is over :sad1: . Your daughter is so cute and that was so sweet of her spending half of her money to get you that gift. What a bond you two have. Do I really have to wait that long for your next trip report?

I love the picture of you two on TOT. Good for her to get on it again (and again and again and again.........).

Thanks, I'm sad that it's over, too. It feels almost as bad as when our trip was over! Oh well, just 12 months and one week until our next trip. LOL!! I'll do a pre-trip report, but I'm not sure how early I'll start it.

Just had to stop by to say I loved reading your report. Your daughter is lovely and it sounds like it was really a special time for the 2 of you. Quite an accomplishment, getting an almost 15 year old to wear mickey ears all day....and without a significant bribe!

My family loves staying at the WL, too. We are going back for our third stay at the end of the month. We used to be Poly fans, but WL is quietly slipping into first place with us. We have a Courtyard view booked - love the sound of that waterfall every morning.

This was totally her idea. She is getting to that age where she thinks she's grown up, but I think at Disney World, we will both always be kids!

Enjoyed the report and all the good pictures! I really look forward to a WL stay someday, but for now, I'm happy just to be able to visit to eat and shop. We don't spend enough time in the rooms to make it worth paying high prices, but I really do want to at least spend a night or two in every Disney resort eventually, just to say I did. Thanks for sharing your trip. Sorry it had to end. I know what you mean about going back to work. After our trip in July/August, I'll be headed straight back to school. I can already get bummed about it if I think about it, and we haven't even left yet!

I just read your TR, cover to cover...I loved it.

1) I would have considered sitting on the toilet to get to Disny also :lmao:

2) Your daughter's face on this trip should make you as happy as going to Disney. You can tell you both share the same love for Disney and each other.

3) Another source of magic on your trip was the ability to eat without ADR's whenever and wherever you wanted!

4) We're staying at WL for the first time, so glad you shared both the pictures and the experience.

5) Enjoy your next trip, Happy Planning!

Thanks! I had read your pre-trip report earlier and just went & got caught up on your trip report. I am enjoying it immensely so far!

Have you ever been to WL just for a visit? If you haven't, you ought to sometimes and take a stroll through the lobby & courtyard. It is so beautiful. Lindsay and I enjoyed looking around the Poly when we went over for our Wishes cruise. In fact, Lindsay said she wanted to stay there sometime.
