View Full Version : Why do people think BWV's rooms are tiny?

I've noticed a few people commenting on the fact that the rooms at the BWV are "tiny". I don't understand. I don't think they are tiny at all. Granted, the rooms at OKW are bigger, but I felt that OKW was more run down. Maybe because it's older. We hated OKW and won't stay there again. I guess it's a matter of opinion.

Hey, some people don't like the BWV's. I just don't understand why they are referred to as "tiny". A Motel 6 room is tiny!

Same with VWL. Our first apartment was smaller than a 2 bedroom at VWL and we lived there for a year!!
And compared to the tiny room we had at DxL a VWL 2 bedroom is a mansion!
Guess it's all perspective and what you're expectations are and what you're used to. :)

It's true the BWV rooms are smaller than OKW but then we don't have to bring a hammer and screwdriver with us on vacation. It all evens out. ;)

Dizzy....I believe our friend RichYams enjoys calling BWV and VWL rooms "tiny". I think he enjoys seeing responses like this. :p
Personally, I wouldn't mind if everyone thought these resorts had tiny rooms....sure would make it easier to book them! ;)

And where do you need to bring a hammer and screwdriver?
The resorts are all different. Some folks like one, some like them all. Some people like taking "shots" at other resorts....maybe to get a rise out of their neighbors. ;)

Pam I agree totally. This is why I don't post here much anymore. I cannot understand all the putdowns on this board. The whole point of ALL the Disney resorts is that there is something for everyone. No the rooms at BWV and WLV are NOT tiny and the rooms at OKW do NOT need a hammer and screwdriver and are NOT run down. Why is so hard for people to accept the fact that everyone has different tastes and needs? I usually enjoy reading posts from people telling others about their vacations and asking questions, but putdowns are not fun and take away from the real point of this forum.

You're exactly right DisneyMim.
I think that it's fantastic that DVC has become a whole system of unique resorts.
Why we have this constant "my resort is bigger/better than your resort" baffles me.
It would be wonderful if everyone would respect each other's decision as to where they prefer to stay, and not feel it necessary to bolster their own opinions by belittling the other resorts.

Well said DisneyMim. I too enjoy reading these boards, but sometimes it is really depressing reading all the negative stuff. You just have to ignore it. I really think that there are some people out there who just enjoy getting a rise out of other people (I have a friend who does this), he doesn't really mean any harm and sometimes doesn't really realize he has taken things too far.

We own at BWV and VWL and we are very happy with our resorts. The reviews (or opinions) are interesting and provide lots of information, but we are not going to sell or get upset because someone prefers OKW. We may also try OKW sometime.
To each their own!

WOW !!! I can't wait for RICHYAMS to weigh in on this one. Wow !, worn and run down you say, about OKW.....wewh !, you mean like a public housing project............a chanty.....the wrong side of the RailRoad Track.......????
One thing about RICHYAMS, I love his knowledge and input. He was instrumental in our own decision to buy. BUT, I also know his sense of humor. He is one of these guys that loves to give an occasional, harmless dig. I love the guy, but I know when, and when NOT to take him serioulsy.
He is probably sitting on the sidelines right now watching this thread and laughing at the storm he has brewed.
Let's NOT take everything serioulsy, after all every thread (posts) is nothing more than someone elses opinion, including your threads (posts). "Tiny", we ALL know is an exageration, nothing more. If you don't know, well you should know the rooms are smaller at BWV, and WLV compared to OKW. I OWN at BWV and WLV, and I could care less what size rooms are at OKW. I like what I bought, if I liked OKW I would have bought there.
I am also mature enough NOT to get offended and bent out of shape at somone's HARMLESS sense of humor. If your skin is SO thin that you take offense to his transparent humor, then so be it !!!! Don't post on these boards........or anywhere else for that matter, you might get offended.

Gee, I always thought there was a friendly "ribbing" sort of thing going on here.....BWV rooms are "tiny", OKW is the "retirement village", and VWL has nothing to offer anyone in their right mind....RIGHT?
And we all know the next resort is the long awaited Tent City Villas along I4 :jester:
Sometimes I think we all take each other waaaaaayyyy too seriously!

When you're dealing with a message board, you can't assume that people can read between the lines.
It's very easy to click on a smilie and add ;) ;) ;) or:D :D :D
Sometimes, I'll read something and think
Then I see that little ;) and I know that it's not meant to be taken seriously.
This would help a lot if people don't want to come across as being mean-spirited.:(

That's why I don't spend too much time on the DVC board anymore. Some people here don't understand humor. OKW is a beautiful resort as are all the other DVC resorts and they are all kept in tip-top shape as far as I can tell. Seriously - are you guys really worried about having to bring a hammer and screwdriver with you on vacation?

Good point about the ;) s. Your point compliments mine about some good old fashion, transparent humor being taken too seriously due to the limitations of the written word and the personalities behind those words.

dvcreg....great points about the smilies.
Sometimes I'm thinking that I'm overdoing them, but you're right, they do help clarify that something is meant as a joke or silly statement. Without them, everything looks very serious and there is no way to determine intent!
I thought a lot of this was good-natured ribbing as well but I think I'll just stay away from any comments about other resorts that might be construed as negative.
Fortunately, my "home" is VWL which seems to get left out of the running feud for the most part. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Before our first DVC trip this past November (we bought a BWV resale in Feb), we were SO disappointed that we could only get OKW, but were put on a waitlist for BWV. Much to our relief, the waitlist came through.
While staying at BWV...in one of those WAY FAR rooms that made me think of Richyams every time we came or went LOL (but hey, I worked off many All You Can Eat buffets that way)...we found some time to check out OKW, and were pleasantly surprised! One of our favorite things was (and I know this may not seem big to many people) the separate laundry room! It was somewhat bothersome at BWV that our laundry baskets had to be in the entry hallway.
OKW was quite a lovely resort (they let us see a 2 BR), and our lunch at Olivia's was one of our favorite meals of the week...good food, wonderfully friendly service. The resort was very peaceful. We decided that A) if we got "stuck" with OKW in the future, it would be just fine, and B) we might even plan to stay there some day. ;)
Our favorite resort? Definitely BWV. WE love being in the middle of activity, we love being able to do a lot of walking to parks (beyond the hikes down the hallway :D), we loved being able to easily split up so, for instance, DH and DS could head back to BWV, while the girls and I hang out in EPCOT/MGM. And the room size was just fine.
And I will ALWAYS be grateful to Richyams for heading me in the right direction to our purchase of BWV. :D :D :D

sometimes I think we all take this stuff way to seriously....I can definetly see the humour in having to bring a screwdriver and hammer to OKW....It sounds like a joke to me, rather then a putdown....I think finding humour in all of this is great!!!...I mean I think that having to bring a compass and sextant with you when trying to find the ice machine at BWV is quite hilarious, and I hope no one takes that as a putdown.

What about three dogs if you already have two people in a studio? Are you breaking two rules?
What if you have a family of three, and two of the family members require guide dogs. Can all five stay in a studio?

My only question (with apologies to ohiomickey) is:
"Can a dog stay at VWL if it brings it's own Aero bed???" :earseek:
Back to the more serious side of this post. There is a pretty good difference in size and function between OKW and the other WDW DVC resorts. All are great resorts so it depends on what's important. We like them all but find that we enjoy OKW best because of the space, laid back feel and parking right in front. For us a family of 4 (2 teens one of each gender) with a 2 BR at any resort, we would be fine. In 1999, we would not have been OK at the other resorts. We had 12 or 13 people with a 2 BR and 2 studios using the kitchen of the 2 BR for all. That would not have worked well at the other resorts because of the limited kitchen and dining areas. We would have had to get two 2 BR but since we were still using free tickets, that would not have worked either.
Frankly, I've see extremely little on this topic over the years that wasn't largely in gest. You guys do know that Rich is rolling in the floor laughing everytime that you guys take his posts so seriously.

We have points at both OKW and BWV. When we enter our suite at OKW it reminds us of the canyons we go through on Big thunder mountain. When we enter our efficiency at BWV we hear "It's a small room after all" ringing through our heads:jester: ......spruce

I've not visited either of the resorts, just seen video tape from my daughter's trip. She stayed at OKW and took the tour of BWV (which also showed WVL room model as well).
I really should make a fair judegement in person, but the room at her OKW was extremely large and bright and light and when she videoed the rooms at the BWV they really seemed quite small and she even pointed out on the tape "look how small this is compared to OKW". She was saying that while I was thinking it and it was quite funny.
Either way, the room is bigger than your regular hotel room so there's really not much to complain about other than it seems you don't get that huge living room space that I think OKW provides.
I've visited Disney before and I really am a fan of Epcot and MGM so sometimes if I wanted to be in a situation where I was close to those parks I guess I'd choose BW and just not worry about the size. Who knows.

This is odd, I have seen it happen before, but the thread was no where, I went to the second page, looked up and down, it was nowhere. I have been doing that since 7:00 this morning, constantly refreshing.
I guess I should check in here now.
First, I want to thank all my fans, I am not worthy of your adulation, anyone who can look at things objectively and speak candidly could take my place, I am not worthy.
Seriously, BWV rooms are small, but they had to be that way for the setting they are in. Its kind of like the country mouse and the city mouse, each being unable to see why the other thinks he is in heaven. For short stays with small numbers of people, I may stay there again. My only real complaint is the walk to the rooms from the elevator.
Parking in front of your unit at OKW is just great.

Since we bought into DVC sight unseen we had nothing to compare to. We purchased OKW versus BW as OKW seemed more our style. When we made our first DVC visit we were very pleased with the size of the units - they are very large. We looked at BW and were very surprised at how much smaller they were. When you take into account that those units also require a higher point rental and much higher dues it doesn't seem to make sense (at least to us). We recently stayed at VWL and honestly the higher point cost, smaller rooms with the fact that your car is a mile away takes us happily back to OKW.
BW & VWL are beautiful resorts but when using our points we prefer to stay in the larger accommodations. Some people much prefer BW and that's great too. Personal taste and preference plays a major role as variety is the spice of life.

When we stayed for the 1st time at BWV our jaws just dropped when we walked in and saw the size! Even my professionally refuse-to-be-awed teenager was impressed. Up to that trip we had always stayed in regular hotel rooms, offsite at that. If regular hotel roms are what you have been used to, believe me, the rooms at BWV will seem huge.
Last January we stayed one night at OKW (last minute ressie, couldn't get BW for whole trip) and the room was, indeed, much larger. I agree with Rich that if I was taking a whole family for a trip and there would be lots of in-room hanging out and visiting, OKW would be the ticket.
That being said, my DS didn't like it much. We had all gotten spoiled by being able to walk out the door at BWV (o.k., Rich, out the door and down the hall) and be out on the Boardwalk or stroll into Epcot or MGM within a few minutes. For us, with a teen, BWV works a lot better - plenty to do, easy to split up if desired and certainly sufficient room.
By the way, I have a theory that where you live in "real" life has something to do with it. We live in a small college town. Housing is inexpensive, so the house is plenty big, we have gardens out back, a deck and hot tub and PLENTY of peace and quiet (have to drive 75 miles to find a mall). For us, the hustle and bustle of the BW is a vacation. For those coming from a big city, I imagine the space and quiet of OKW is more of a change.
