Stupid me... I asked this on the CB, it got no answers and then I forgot about it.

My parent's are leaving next week for the drive to Orlando and are going to stop in my dad's hometown of Biloxi to try to find my grandparent's graves.

My husband and I stopped to look for them back in March, but the cemetery was in such bad shape, we weren't successful.

I just remember how hard it was for us to see the devastation and would like to warn my father ahead of time, if it's still that bad.

Has there been any progress made along Hwy 90?

There is currently a company working on the restoration of the Biloxi Cemetary. If you haven't contacted them to help identify your grandparents gravesites, you might consider calling Biloxi City Hall to find out who you should talk to. They have been asking families to help with the restoration.

The Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs bridges are still under construction, but you can travel Hwy 90 between them. These bridges are well under way!

Please tell your parents not to hesitate to stop. We are recovering well and, as always, we're happy to have "ya'll come over and see us!"

I'm not sure if this is the cemetery or not. I remember it being near a lighthouse? I'm wanting to say it was on a median? :confused3

The front of the cemetery was in really, really bad shape. Old, above-ground crypts had collapsed. It was really sad to see. My grandparent's graves were/are further back, but I never could find them.

I'll pass on the road info to them. I'm sure that information will come in handy! For us too, since we're leaving in a little over six weeks. We'll probably detour through there to see the progress and hopefully spend some tourist dollars!

Do you by any chance know the shape of the fire station there? My grandfather was a FF in Biloxi and I know some other current FF's there.

The cemetary you are looking for is called Southern Memorial Park. It is located on Highway 90 and is privately owned. There doesn't seem to be alot of progress on the beach front crypts, but I can't be sure. I just spoke with my DMIL and she told me that we have family members buried there in the back and toward the front. Their graves were undisturbed. I hope that you will discover the same thing. There was an article in the Sun Herald about the work that the owners had been doing, but that was several months ago.

The Biloxi Fire Dept. is fine. My DMIL would love to know your family's name. She automatically went into "family tree mode." You know, when older locals want to know everyone your related to by blood, marriage, and other means!! :rotfl: She's convinced that you must be our relative!

I hope both trips are everything you hope for and more.

My maiden name (as well as my Grandfather's) is Breal and my grandmother's last name was Cronisich ( I just know I misspelled that, but that's the phonetic spelling!).

My Godfather, who was killed by a train a few years back, also lived there. His last name was Boney.

It would be cool if she knew of the names!

Hi...I live in Biloxi and am related to some Breal's....some now live in Ft. Worth and Austin. I think I remember hearing about a Boney being killed by a train in Biloxi. I think it was on Reynoir street...I cross those tracks everyday to pick up my Grandfather for lunch. My family name is Joachim. Small world.

You're kidding me???!!!

All I know, is I have a cousin that lives in Pensacola and my parents are meeting him in Biloxi.

Coincidentally, my pediatricians name (and I'm talking my pediatrician, and I'm 40!) was Joachim, but we weren't related.

Small world, indeed!

I'll pass this on to my mother and father!

Tine731 - I just spoke to my mother and my godfather was killed at that street, on a Halloween night.

She said she's not sure who lives in north and central Texas, but does think that there are some Breals that do live there. I also have a cousin still living in Biloxi, that I was unaware of.

This is so strange. My family is so small and to have potentially found a relative on the DIS would be really freaky!

Oh girl.... since you are a Breal and related to the Boneys, your family is anything but small. You just need to come and spend a week or two in Biloxi and your family tree will branch out in thousands of ways. So, not small, just unknown!! My DMIL told me many distant cousins of my DH that are married to relations of Breals and Boneys. I told you she loves to go into "family tree mode." Watch out if you visit here... you'll have more cousins than you'll know what to do with!

I mentioned our talk at school (work) and people started asking me if you were related to dozens of Breals. They also remembered your godfather's tragic accident. Of course, they wanted to know when you'd be here to visit. See, more cousins are turning up before they've even met you! :rotfl: When you visit, just introduce yourself and include your maiden name. The family tree will grow before your eyes!

Oh, how funny! I would love to find out more, but since I don't know many of them myself, I don't know what to ask! My grandfather died before I was born, as did my father's brother. I never met his children (and I know one of them lives in Biloxi). When my grandmother died when I was 13, we sort of stopped going and I never got to know any one else. :sad1:

AFAIK, I'm not related to the Boney family. I guess he must have been a god friend of my dad's. My Godmother was Anna Thompson, too. I had forgotten her name.

My father will be there next weekend, or the weekend after. I think they might have moved the Biloxi visit to the end of their WDW trip. I'll pass this on to my mother. I'm not sure if she's created a DIS ID, but she might just to PM you!

This is too cool!

I'll PM you with some names!
