Hello everyone!
For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!
New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Whoever said running is 10% physical and 90% mental was right on :thumbsup I've had major LTO this week and felt very out of sorts before my LR this am...didn't even want to go out this morning. So my 7 miles was not fabulous...walked most of the 6th mile, but made a 12:32 pace. I'm actually not unhappy with it. I know I do better when my brain comes along...just didn't take it with me today :confused3
I've missed a couple runs over the past week to try to let my foot heal. I've had a painful spot on top of the PF foot since the Sarasota half. I'm working the denial because I don't want to deal with a stress fracture. Time off seems to have helped.
Carrie...:wizard: for your injury. I think the sports med referral was a good idea!
Leana...thanks for setting up the skirtsports discount! Wonder who else might give us team discounts
Laurie...great run!
Kristi...wow...congrats to Molly! That's a lot of pressure for a 9 yo.
Krista...congrats on your 10 mile run! But yikes :scared1:
Bill and Lynnda...glad everything went well and you're back home for Timmy's first holiday!
Welcome back tiberius!
Howard...great to see you around here! Are you on Spring Break?
:wizard: for everyone with LTO issues! We're trying to figure out where DD14 should go to high school, two different programs to decide between, in county or out of district. I'll be glad when this part's over and she's in high school. Good news is she gets her braces off on May 2, right before the Minnie. I've promised her a caramel apple from Goofy's Candy Company.
I got a new fuel belt from runningwarehouse...two bottles since I've been worrying about having enough water to train for the full.
Happy Easter, Passover, Festivus, etc!

Yeah I am the first!
But what does that mean?
Well anyway!
I GOT NEW BIKE SHORTS!
It just means you were faster than the rest of us. Good luck with your new bike shorts!
As for me, I look forward to picking up training after last week's light week following my April 1 half marathon.

Angie – Awesome pace on your run! WTG!
Christy – Great LR!
Laurie – Doesn’t it feel great to run a new longest distance? Great job!
Vic – The TOT clippie is kind of creepy. :scared: You did a good job on it!
Kristi – Bummer that Molly got cut. Sounds like y’all had a good day anyway! I didn’t realize she was so young. That’s really cool.
Krista – I’m so glad your run went well this morning! Yay!
Tiberius – Are you in Houston? Great job on beating your half marathon goal!
Christa – Yay for new bike shorts!
Mel – Sorry your foot’s bothering you. Hope it heals up soon! :wizard:
Training update: We did manage to get in a full 4 days this week. It was tough, but we did it! We got a crazy cold front here (seriously, it's colder for Easter than it was for Christmas), so we did tonight's run/walk on the TM. 2.75 miles in 39 minutes at 1% incline.
I think we're going to try to get a run in early tomorrow morning before driving down to the IL's for Easter.

Happy Easter WISH Team!
I've updated our calendar. Don't forget to stop there to check and post.
Since I've not done much reading these last several weeks it's got to be all about me...I'm working with physical trainer trying to get my body in better shape to get the steps in. I love this and WISH I could afford to continue past the time I've signed on to work with her. I think it is helping me tremendously.
I hope that everyone is continuing to make progress and if you need PD to overcome some things that may be getting in the way I'm offering some to those in need.

Happy Easter
We have a nice warm 24 with 4" of snow on the ground. The high today is supposed to be 35. Never got above freezing yesterday.
I am half heartedly training for the 5K on April 21. I am still in therapy trying to get the strength back in my shoulder. It is coming along but it is a very slow process.
Tax season is almost over and then I am taking a few days off after the 5K. I am having surgery on my left knee for a meniscus tear. I should be back in full training mode by June according to the surgeon. I even will do something which is out of character for me, I will start out slowly and work up gradually to not do any more damage to this old body.
I hear Lynne shoveling snow so she can get her bike out of the car and do a 5 hr trainer session for her upcoming triathlon.
Have a great day.

Good morning and happy easter (if you celebrate it)!
DH (Calcio  ) and I will be running this afternoon. On tap is an 8 mile run. We've chosen to run on the high school track to know exactly how far we've gone and how fast. It was SUPPOSED to be near 50 degrees today but then they called for snow flurries. They've backed off that (thank heaven) but it's still colder than it was at Christmas. Right now it is a balmy 32 degrees with wind chill of 26. I think I'll wait until afternoon to run.
Mel: sorry to hear your run was not quite what you wanted but kudos for getting out and getting a run in!
Christa: hope the bike shorts work out well for you!
Angie: I hope the cold front isn't too bad for you but I heard that parts of TX are supposed to get snow! Yikes!!!
Lily: hope things are well for you! :wizard:
NYcpa: this must be the busiest time of year for you so try and get some rest and survive!
Hope everyone else has a lovely weekend!

I'm on the first page! I'm on the first page!! I'm a somebody now!!!!
Happy Easter to all. My Easter/New Week's resolution? To actually keep up with this thread for the week. Oh, and also to get my butt in gear and get myself back on track with the whole running thing. I have fallen -- hard -- off the training wagon and am having a lot of trouble getting motivated. It just seems that between work, kids, school, the kids' school, the house, the 130 pound dog, the husband, the sick parents, the still-unfinished dissertation, the holidays (we are a 2-religion household, so this past week was particularly brutal) and the weather (okay, after reading the post from Syracuse, I shouldn't complain, at least I don't have snow to contend with, but I hate running when it is windy and in the 30s or low 40s) -- it just seems like there is always something else that takes priority. So I'm hoping if I keep up with this thread, you guys will inspire me to put myself and the running first. Otherwise you will be trampling over me and my green shirt laying on the ground next January.
So, good job on all the runs, congrats on that beautiful new baby boy (by the way, is your full name William Floyd? Thats the name of a highway out on the eastern end of Long Island!), everyone looks fabulous in the pix they posted and I am very impressed with the ability to take a photo of yourself making a W! Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday if you celebrate, a wonderful Sunday no matter what, and a wonderful week full of inspiring running tales (hint, hint ;) ).

Good morning all!!!
Just a quick notes before heading to the in-laws....:scared1:
I got out yesterday for a quick 3-miler, finished in 26:36, so 8:52/mile!!! In spite of the cold and snow (or perhaps because of it), I think I really tried to push it. Oh, and it turns out that I don't much mind running in the snow (it's nice, really) so long as the roads are clear. I realize that only happens about 3 days a year here in Michigan.... but it's nice nonetheless. :teeth:
I've been trying to decide what to do this summer in terms of training. I have a 5K and a 10K, but nothing really beyond that. I figure I'll do Hal Higdon's Intermediate II training plan for Goofy, so that takes care of the ToT 13K and Marathon weekend. Hal Higdon's Intermediate II plan is pretty darn intense, so I need to get myself in shape to do it... I'm just not sure how to get there yet :)
I have a very busy week coming up (again), so it looks like 5AM runs for me this week!! :headache: (Now, let's see if I can manage to get here and post them! :thumbsup2 )
Take Care,
Kevin :earsboy:

Well, I'm new to the group....and totally new to this whole walking for great distances thing LOL!
Right now I'm trying to build my cardio base. My goal is 12-14 miles a week for the next couple of weeks. I also just got cleared (recovering from back surgery) to go forward in my training and start swimming again (I was a water based creature for most of my life). So that's great!
I'm trying super hard not to push myself beyond my limits. I'd love to know what you guys use for clues. For example, I did two walks yesterday, one w/the dog at about a 21 min/mile pace for 1.2 miles. The second at just shy of a 20 min/mile pace for 3.4 miles. Although my legs were a little sore getting into bed last night, I feel great this morning. The weather is gorgeous today, and I feel like another 4 miles (one w/the dog, and 3 without) is probably ok. But maybe that's too much too soon.
What am I working towards? I'm planning a 5K in mid June (it's sort of a fun run/walk for an animal shelter). Planning on walking it and hoping for at least a 16 min/mile for the whole race. My ultimate goal is the Disney 1/2 in january (and somewhere around a 14-15 min/mile..maybe faster if I can convince my body that jogging isn't the devil's work.)
I look forward to hearing about everyone's training and to learn as much as I can!

Got my two hour ride in yesterday, for a bunch of personal bests:
Longest time: 2 hours
Longest distance: 35.7 miles
Top Speed: 39.1 mph :scared1: (Avg 17.8)
Longest time in a week: 4.5 hours (3 rides)
Longest distance in a week: 77 miles (3 rides)
The speed was going downhill back over a bridge which was pretty much perfectly downwind with 14mph gusting to 23... Needless to say the first half of the ride which was all upwind was basically brutal... I've never rode a dozen miles straight upwind, so I sure am glad that was the beginning of the ride and not the end... It was all worth it for the glorious flying across the bridge downwind at the end though... Am supposed to get out for a 60 min run today, but it'll be much later in the day once my quads have at least partially recovered.

Quick question to everyone.
I was thinking about do the ToT b/c I will be @ WDW anyway for vacation...but....
Does anyone think $65 is a little pricey for 8.1 race? Am I reading the fee right? Yes, I know they will have a few rides open to enjoy, but WHY $65.00? I pay less than that for some marathons I run.:sad1:
I just don't know if I can swing that. Wah, Wah, Wah!

Christa, I too think it is pricey. The fee and the fact that I would have to fly down are the main reasons why I am sticking with MCM. ToT would be a lot more costly in the end. My family and I will drive up to MCM and make a long weekend out of it.

8.0 miles in 83:03!!!!!!!!! That's 10:23 per mile average! Aaaaa!! I have NEVER run that fast for that long a distance! OK, so it wasn't consistant 10:23 pace, and there was one mile in the middle where I had a stitch so that mile was 10:42, but the last mile I ran in 9:50!! Woo-hoo for me!!! I was/am totally psyched about that effort.
Best of all, I had DH on my shoulder the whole way. It really makes a difference running with someone. We were at the high school track and he was running in the outside lane from me so he actually ran further than I did. That's good b/c my pace usually holds him back so this was good for him.
Christa: I did think $65 was a bit high for a race, but I'm willing to pay it for that race. I love that time of year. We'd love to have you join us!!
Monica: I saw there was snow again in CO. Did you get any?
Matt: great ride! :thumbsup2
Kevin: good luck with those early morning runs and survive the busy week ahead!!
bekkiz: :welcome: This group is great and you'll get a lot of support. I think your 5K in June is very do-able.

bekkiz - Good luck with your Disney 1/2 goal! I started out in late December following John Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals plan and finished my first half marathon last weekend. If I can do it, you can too.

Hi everyone, happy Easter!!
I've been keeping up with my workouts over the last few days. Since I took a rest day Wednesday I turned Friday into a XT day with an hour of aerobic body sculpting (step and weights). The workout felt great, but I think it may have been a bit much to do the day before my long run as my legs felt tired on the run yesterday.
That being said though, I still pulled out a great 6.2 mile LR yesterday. I ran it in 1:09:26 for an 11:12/mi. Not too bad! My splits were reasonably consistent, except for the last 1.2 miles! I opted to run the pathway downtown because they clear snow there year round (and yes, yesterday there was still snow on the ground). Well, I've never done this long a distance down there before so I extended out my loop a bit farther east. Well let me tell you, once I hit the last 1.2 mile homestretch on the SE side of town I also landed in the not so savory part of the city. I really kicked it into high gear to make it back! Next time I may do a double loop to avoid that part of town...
This morning I did 30 min of upper body weights. I have to move Tuesday's run to Monday, so I didn't want to tax the legs too much. Thankfully weather wise this coming week looks much better, except for a chance of snow we have Tuesday. Otherwise we are back to warm spring weather!
Well, I have to hit the grocery store for a few last minute items for the Easter dinner I am hosting for my DB and DSIL so I'd better get on with it. Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

Good luck with that meniscus scope job. I've noticed that many people go through that and get no swelling and are back up and moving in no time. I hope you fit into that group. In my case I had a lot of swelling and fluid build up, which set me back a few weeks. The best part was before when the surgeon came into the holding area and wrote YES in pen on the correct knee. Good for you planning to build easy after, and good luck with the return to running.
Christa
$65 is getting up there. After being in London last month I promised to never, ever complain about prices anywhere in the USA, including the Disney empire. Here is a sample of what Lesley and I paid, in pounds, for stuff in London. Since the current exchange rate is just a bit below 2:1 you can double these prices to get it in $. During the trip Lesley kept telling me to stop doing that, but I told her , hey I am able to multiply by 2.
London Eye 28 pounds per person
Tower of London 18 pounds per person
St. Paul's 10 pounds per person
Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Mason's 55 pounds for 2, w/o champagne
And the topper of toppers, which I still cannot believe, a quick first night dinner for 2 tired travelers at Pizza Hut, 30 pounds :scared1: . No, I am not making that one up. Who could?
Keeping this in mind helps me when I see the quoted prices at Disney. About the only thing that I really cannot accept is paying the Disney prices for bad meals. Admission prices, race costs, and the like are up there, but "that's what things cost in 2007." Repeat 100 times until I actually believe it.
WTG Leana
Ah yes, today's run. It was 34 degrees and really windy out there today on the track. The backstretch was straight into the wind and when you turned into it the wind stood you right up. I was planning to go a bit over an hour today and when Martha said she would run 8 miles I happily volunteered to run next to her. I have to say being next to her was really cool, as every time her pace quickened or slowed I noticed it and could ask her if it was intentional or not. Her toughest mile was 5 to 6, when we went through a 1/4 about 10 seconds slower than the others. She told me she was working through a stitch, thus the ease off in pace. When we hit mile 7 she took off like an F-16 and I asked her is this was on purpose, which is a nice way to ask your wife if she knows what she is doing  . I mean 1 mile is a long way to kick in. She told me, yes, this in intentional, and I had to push my pace to keep up with her. I did get the half mile split in 4:52, so we were clipping right along.
I will take exception with Martha's comment on our variable pace. Our 5K split was 32:40 and our 10K split was 65:25. By my calculations that means our 2nd 5K was 32:45, which seems fairly consistent with the previous 5K!
So I got 8.11 miles at 10:14 per mile. The last time I did that distance and pace was the first 8 miles of the Disney Marathon. I think I've made the step into what I think of as fitness level one of my training. Level 2 in my mind is the fitness to run a good half marathon, and I hope to be there by labor day. After that I'll push it up to the marathon training, because, just once, I'd like to have a smile on my face the last 10K of the Disney Marathon.
And, of course, with one detour, running the Tower of Terror 13K on Saturday, October 27. That is, to the night, the 30 anniversary of the night we met. I know, I'm no Cary Grant, but I'll recognize this evening by standing in the starting corrals with my wife, under the TOT.

Thanks so much for the welcome! I am so excited to join such a motivated and fun group :)
RedDragonThose are some awesome times! Excellent work. I only wish I could swing the airfare to come to the ToT race. That sounds like SO much fun.
tiberius I've seen mentions of that book before, but I really appriciate the first hand knowledge. I really want to accomplish this, and it's so helpful knowing that others have been able to pull it off.
I ended up fitting in another walk today, because I knew the weather would be icky the next couple of days. It was my longest walk yet, right around 4.25 miles and we took exactly 1:20. That's about a 19 min/mile pace for 4 miles! For most of you, I know that is so so slow, but for me that's awesome. A few more weeks of training, and I know I can do the 5K at a 16 min/mile :) I also took the pup for a 1.2 mile walk in about 23 minutes. I was really trying to work on my stride and posture, so I wasn't was worried about moving quick. Almost 5.5 in a day---I never thought I could do that this soon after surgery (3 months out).
We'll see how my legs feeling in the morning :)

Christa - Hooray for new bike shorts!
bekkiz - Welcome!
Martha - GREAT run! You'll be passing everyone if you keep this up.
Craig - DH and I had similar conversations when we were in London. (Fortunately, it was '03 and the exchange rate was only about 1.65). He kept wanting to convert everything to $$; I kept telling him to just enjoy it and shut up about it. I'm dying over the London Eye - it was only 10 pounds when we were there! (And DH thought that was too much... I just read your post to him so maybe he'll stop complaining about how expensive that trip was!)
I'm sulking today. I've been trying not to admit that the pain in my right foot was PF, but everything I've read has pretty much confirmed that it is. I talked to DH's boss's wife this AM, who's also a runner, and she looked at me and said "you have to stay off it." That was so NOT what I wanted to hear, but so what I knew already and just didn't want to admit to myself. I guess it will be the bike for the next few weeks. I really want to do a 5K on the 29th, but I guess I need to wait and see how it feels.

20 years ago I developed PF at a time when I was running a lot, and running the fastest I ever had before or will again. Thus the injury. I was turning out PR's every race so I refused to stop, and yes it hurt like hades.
I got it under control with 3 steps:
1. Shoes with a lot of support and cushion,
2. Customized orthotics this followed the contours of my very-high-arched-and-rigid-feet precisely and kept the plantar from overflexing with each stride, and
3. Ice. Lots of ice, tons of ice. Filled dixie cups with ice and iced down the hot spots in the ball and heel before and after each run, and again just before bed. Before kept the spots cold and the swelling down before running. After got the swelling under control by freezing it after runs. Before bed put the fire out before a night's rest and really helped.
Add to this I also quit wearing loafers which looked sharp but had no support of the planter. It was a slow road, but I beat PF, and haven't had any trouble since.
Also, you may want to do lots of different training, not just running. Doing some running, biking, x-training, and lifting will get you fitter and stronger and put less stress on the plantars.
Good luck. Many runners have faced this problem and beaten it. I hope the same for you.

Angie—great job on the 8 miles! Wow, what a pace!
Kevin—glad to see you’ve been able to keep up with your workouts with all the other stuff you’ve got going on. Nice job on the 3 mile pace! So you’re going to go for Hal Higdon’s intermediate II plan for Goofy? Yeah, that is really ambitious. I almost went for the int II but decided to do the int I and I just modified it to get a few more longer back to back long runs. One thing I didn’t do that he did suggest was to run the Saturday shorter LRs at race pace. I tried that for a few of the runs and when I got up to about 9 miles Sat/17 miles Sun, the 9 miles at a faster pace really caused a big mess for the 17 on Sunday. I just felt really sluggish and the Sunday run was not fun at all. So I ended up backing off the Saturday pace and doing it slower than the Sunday run. It just seemd to work better for me. Anyway, good luck picking the training program. Good to hear from you!
Dave—nice job on getting out there for the LR. Good for you for taking it easy, especially to give your body (or booty!) some time to rest. Have fun on the day trip getaway next weekend!
Martha—wow, Friday was NOT your day! Sorry about your luck. Awesome job on the 8 miles! Good for you for making Craig run in the outside lane of the track. :)
Christa—nice job on the 8 miles. Uphill both ways??? You sound like the old grandparents telling stories of their walks to school 85 years ago. In the snow. Uphill both ways. You know come to think of it, never once in those stories did I hear anything about RUNNING to and from school. 15 miles round trip or something fun like that. No water stops and wearing cotton socks. C’mon, grandma—step it up!
Laurie—great job on the run! You’re speedy!
Kristi—wow, cool story! Sorry that Molly didn’t make it. There’s always next year. We’ll be looking for you guys on tv, keep us posted when you find out an air date.
Howard—Hi! Glad to see you could make it out for a run. You and Cam have been so busy lately, it makes me tired just reading your posts.
Tiberius—welcome back!
Mel—Nice job on getting out there for the run even when you didn’t feel like it. Hope your foot is feeling better. Your 90% mental, 10% physical comment made me laugh because it reminded me of a good friend I have at work. He runs the Flying Pig marathon every year, but he doesn’t run at all during the 8 months of time between the end of the race and the beginning of training for the next Pig (he really needs a motivating group like us to keep him in check J ). I’ll convince him to do a 10K or some other race with me once in awhile during the year, and in trying to get other guys at work to run with us, he’ll tell them, “Oh, c’mon and do it with us, running the race is 90% mental and 10% physical.” I always tell him, “Dave, the only reason you’re saying that is because you’re only doing 10% of the training you’re supposed to be doing.” J One of these days, his lack of training is going to catch up with him and he’s going to literally fall apart on the race course. Or maybe I’m just hoping it will catch up with him…..
Lily—Hi! Glad to see you like working with the trainer and hope it continues to go well.
Kathy—good luck training for the 5K. Hope your surgery goes well and you’re probably smart to start back slowly after that. Did you say Lynne was going to do 5 hours on the bike trainer?? That’s crazy!!
Bekkiz—welcome!!
Leana—Way to go on the run!
Craig—nice job on the run. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s possible to finish any marathon, any time with a smile on the face for the last 10K. :confused3
Despite a busy work week, I did manage to keep up with training. I got in 2 bikes, 4 runs, 2 lifts, and one swim. Let me tell you about that swim. Ummm….it sucked. I forgot how hard swimming laps really is. I have a sprint distance tri in 7 weeks and I really need to get the pool time in, but I sure hope it gets easier. About this time of year, I always get really ambitious and start ramping up my biking and think, “hey, this tri stuff isn’t too hard.” Yeah, then I get back in the pool. Lynne, I have complete admiration for you being able to finish a 2.4 mile swim (oh, and then following it up with 112 on the bike and 26.2 on the feet :scared1: ). I know how I’m supposed to swim (technique), but I just can’t make it work too well. I end up out of breathe in two laps and wonder how in the world I can run for hours but I can’t swim 50 meters in the pool without grabbing the wall for a breather. Oh well, it will get better, I know I just need to get more laps in.
Glad to see everyone’s having a good Easter weekend. Can’t wait to start back to work tomorrow! Have a great week, guys!

Martha - Awesome run!!!:cool1: :thumbsup2
Craig - What a way to spend a 30th Anniversary to the night you met. I told my wife and she asked me if I remember the date we met...silence, very uncomfortable silence (we met playing volleyball and SHE wasn't interested in me so why should I have remembered it....I know, I know...lame excuse).
Matt - You should be renamed Thunder and Lightning Matt! Lightning for the Speed and Thunder for the sonic boom that follows! Great Ride! You'll be IronManMatt before we know it!
Christa - I agree that $65 is a bit steep for a race...I paid only $55 for the CDC (the Half Marathon in Chicago, not the government agency).
Kathy - pixiedust: pixiedust: to a speedy and uneventful recovery!
Mel - Great job for still getting out for 7!
Kevin - Good job getting in 3 miles with the cold and snow! Good luck this week, hopefully you still get in your runs and posts!
bekkiz - WELCOME to a great and supportive board! Your gonna meet a lot of great people!
Leana - Great LR! Good to hear you made it back through the unsavory parts okay!
Jackie - pixiedust: pixiedust: for your foot. Hope you are able to make the 5K later this month, but be safe about it.
This morning my DW and I woke up early so we could get some training in before an Easter Brunch with her family. I did 30 min on a stationary cycle (my rump hurts, may have to get bike shorts myself, the baggy kind) and some Ab work. I work tomorrow, but then have 3 days off after that so I will get some miles in the next few days.
Happy Training and Happy Easter!

After a total runner's high of a 6 miler tonight in less than an hour, I have high hopes for the next several weeks.
To summarize my week: 12 miles running, 77 miles on the bike, totalling 89 miles! Worked out 6 of the 7 days including a couple swim workouts, for a total of 7 hours and 11 minutes! Definitely personal bests for both mileage and time. And all of it was virtually pain free, so like I said, high hopes for upcoming attempts at duathlons, metric century rides, and tris! Now if only I could just never get deployed...

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the great advice last week. I'm still under the weather but slowly getting better. I took Friday off from work to rest up and got major cabin fever and wasn't ready to take a training break yet so DH and I went for a late night 5 miler. I actually did pretty well. Saturday morning = different story. Got up early to try and get a 4 mile run in on the TM and while all went smooth during most of the run, the treadmill automatically stops after 30 min and you have to reset everything well once it stopped I got really light headed and felt weak so I stopped completely. Only got 2.8 miles in which included my warm up. Oh well. Sunday I skipped my LR in hopes of getting well enough to stay on track this week. Today is another rest day and then hopefully tomorrow I'll get back into my old groove. Setbacks can be so frustrating! I guess in a way it's good though because I actually missed running and can't wait to get back. I need to catch up on all the posts but it sounds like a few of you have done some great training this week/weekend which is super impressive with the holiday and all. Great job!

Howdy Strangers! I'm back after a long hiatus from the disboards. Work has been too busy lately, and DH and I are trying to buy a new house and prepare ours for sale. I have done very little in the way of training, but with the Minnie less than 4 weeks away I have to get back on track. I sure have missed you guys. I will try to keep up this week.
:welcome: bekkiz! I love the picture of your schnauzer. I have had two wonderful schnauzers in my life. They are the sweetest dogs.
I am so excited about our newest WISH scream team members (Bill & Lynnda's and Lisa's sons). It is so great to see the WISH team grow.
Better get to work. Happy Monday everyone!

Hey all. Not much to report. I only had a 4 miler to do on Saturday, so I did it on the indoor track because the weather here is pure rotten. I did 4 miles in 46:46. I was pretty happy with that.
Sunday was exhausting. We have a lot of family drama and it's no fun at times. I hoped for the best, but it wasn't meant to be this time. My girls had a happy Easter non the less. I really could do without all the extra candy in the house!!!
Matt - WOW, your amazing with your workouts. I have the hardest time finding the time. That is where I struggle. GREAT JOB!
Steve - I try to swim every once in awhile because it is a great workout, but I am dying after a couple of laps also. I swear my asthma is worse while swimming than running. I am a wall gripper after my laps!!
Martha - AWESOME AWESOME run!! Way to go!!!!
OK, I am at work today. I have more interviews to go through for my assistant/receptionist. We offered the position to someone and then she turned it down because she wanted more flexible hours. She would prefer to work from 6am-2pm. Well, it doesn't really pay for you to work when the office is closed, now does it!!!!
Have a great day all!

Hey all! Just a quick post from me--as I'm sitting here staring out at the beautiful Siesta Key beach drinking my coffee. I know, hard life! Got a 5 mile run in this am--Mel, we left Jamaica Royale and ran down Midnight Pass Rd for 2.5miles and then headed back. Gotta love running the island--completely flat!!! But is was my first run in 3 days, and the legs were really heavy. I hope everyone is having a great week and great training--Gotta run, DH needs my help sunblocking the kiddos!

Mel & Steve~
Thanks for the notes. Spring break (for me) ended two weeks ago. I am through with most of my mid-terms with only one more outstanding (due in two weeks). Things are nuts for sure.
I hope to get back into an exercise and running program soon. I feel heavy... although the scale has been kind so far, it won't last too long.
Keep up the good work! Maybe I can live vicariously through your training efforts until I am freed up (May 22 PM).
Happy training!

I am new to this list. I attempted the Donald in 2006 but could not hit the pace requirement (by the way, no medals when swept guys, not even one member of our team who had to leave at the 22nd mile in the full due to health reasons).
I am part of Team Arthritis (Joints in Motion) and am headed back, with my sister-in-law in January, 2008.
I am signed for the 5k (as is she) and she wants to do the full. I am toying with trying the half again, but am still quite heavy and am worried about the pace.
Anyway, I am a Disney nut, and find your posts interesting (I have lurked for a little bit). Just thought I would say hi.

Just back from my lunchtime workout at the Y. 35 minutes on the TM. It wasn't the most thrilling run, but I got my steps in. There were a lot of people running the track and TM's, I wonder if it has anything to do with the 5 mile race coming up this weekend?
Howard - HI!! Hope things settle down for you soon!

OK, back to work. I am overwhelmed with no assistant.

Today started National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. I ordered a cake for the troops and each shift a meat and cheese tray. We also do a "Cheesy" gift raffle each day. I have to show them I'm not that big of a horses butt. :rotfl: So, if you have an opportunity to speak with a public safety call taker or dispatcher, tell them thanks. They deserve it.

Hi, everyone!
Let's see -- how much do I remember?
Mel -- I am so sorry you are having so much pain in your foot. I hope you find some relief soon.
MelR -- congrats on the great new job! I see Christa didn't wait to see if you could set up a discount before she bought new bike shorts. :rotfl:
Christa- congrats on the new shorts! ;)
Matt -- man, you are fast and busy!!! You continue to impress the heck out of me. Please give Cheryl a hug for me!
Craig and Martha -- you two are so cute! I am so glad you had such an amazing run together. :cool1: :cool1: How is Lesley feeling today?
Bill -- so glad to see you here. Did your family enjoy your first Easter together? Has your furbaby gotten used to Timmy being around yet?
Hi, Lynnda! How are you feeling? I hope you are looking forward to being back in the training groove in six weeks or so! :yay:
Kristi -- cool story about your niece. I am sure Molly will remember that experience for the rest of her life! Sorry you got lost on the subway. I am sure that is not uncommon!
Jimmduck -- :welcome:
Erin, Kathy, Howard ( ), Heather -- we have missed you guys around here!
Steve -- I hope your hard work in the pool makes that endeavor a lot easier. Hopefully, you will see an improvement in your lung capacity. I still can't figure out why I can't breathe better when I run. So, knowing a really fit person like you is finding that kind of thing when swimming makes me feel like it isn't entirely a fitness issue. :confused3
Jen and Dave -- I am so sorry you guys are so unhappy at work. I am so blessed to love the people I work with and the work I do. I just can't imagine dragging myself out of bed every day to a job I wasn't happy at.
Carrie -- I hope your PT will find a quick resolution for your foot pain. Sending you pixiedust: sweetie!
Hi, Sunny! I miss you and hope all is well in your world. Are you taking care of yourself?
Lily -- I am sorry you are going through LTO too! Just think, though, we are almost 20% through the work week! :woohoo:
Krista -- how is the cooking effort going? I was lusting after all those great meals you were posting about last week! ;)
Vic -- Thanks for the ToT clippie. I think it is time for me to add that and the Mickey '08 to my siggie, since I have made the hotel ressies for the first and received the confirmation post card for the latter!
Well, I didn't get any formal training in this weekend in New England. I had done my 7 mile LW mid-week since I'd be away this weekend. On Friday I did a 3 mile and a 2 mile walk -- the first was partly on the beach. Gorgeous though very, very cold. The second was along a canal in Cape Cod and under the Sagamore Bridge. Very pretty with some military vessels moving up and down the canal. Another very brisk 3 mile walk on Saturday and 40 minutes leisurely walk to and from church yesterday. I was actually envious of Howard's time at the gym on Saturday. But, I was busy with visiting and eating way too much food. With the Minnie just less than 4 weeks away, I am trying to figure out what kind of training to squeeze in and how long my LWs should be. I really do fear that my jogging progress is being curtailed as I focus on distance rather than speed. I seem to be able to maintain mid-13:00 miles over the distance and am content to be able to sustain that. I may have to wait until after the Minnie to really work on speed/intervals. I'd hate to risk injury now and have noticed some shin splints and instep pain when I pick up the pace.
sorry to all I missed. Keeping up should count for cross-training, don't you think?

I just love reading these threads - you all get me so pumped to get out there and run/walk! My training is going well. Got in 5 miles on sat for my LR, and today did 4 miles at a slower 14 min pace. My LR this week will be 6.5. Good job everyone for all your hard training!
Jimmduck - I know how you feel. I am nervous about the 1/2 as well - but I think I am going to go for it. I am doing a 15k next month, so if I can get through that, I think I will be able to do the half (with training of course). Glad to have you here!:cheer2:

I keep getting into this "I need to respond to all of the previous posts before I post an update" mentality and all that ends up happening is that I read everyone's posts and log out without posting a darn thing. I just can't keep up with all of you!
Now that I am planning to do the Chicago Distance Classic in August, I have increased my training slightly and switched from training by time to training by distance. (More motivation to go faster when I know that it means I get to stop sooner!) Nothing extreme, my LR are only 4 miles at this point. But I have thrilled to report that I finished 4 miles in 51:25 on Saturday! That is really moving for me. I am also consistently finishing my 3 mile run/walks in 40:00 and I am pretty happy with that right now.
The Indycar race season finally started a few weeks ago and I am planning my training around that schedule (because I am that obsessed with it). I can't wait for May to arrive as I live close enough to Indy to make it to the track for several of the practice sessions and qualifying. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Greatest Spectacle in Racing - the Indy 500 - the teams arrive in early May and stay the entire month.
I've really got to look into doing the Indy mini-marathon sometime. Maybe next year? Has anyone here done that one? What was it like?

Christa – I’d like to have another pair of bike shorts. They’re so expensive! As for the $65 ToT fee….Yes, it’s HIGH! However, I’m going to do it. I guess those glow in the dark shirts are really expensive! :scared1: for the swimmer. I may need to see about getting a psychotherapist to run with me.
Erin – swimming a mile is one thing….but what that guy did….yikes!
Mel – good pace even with the LTO issues! Your 90% mental and 10% physical is right on – in my case at least. Sometimes I think my body is telling me to stop this nonsense but I sometimes figure out that’s it’s my personal demon talking. Ugh!
Kathy – good luck on the knee surgery after a busy last few days of tax season!
Erica – I can never keep up with the threads and I don’t have nearly the stuff going on that you do.
Kevin – Great 3 miler! I’m not disciplined enough to get out at 5am yet.
bekkiz – :welcome: Good luck with your training. Sounds like you are doing really well so far. I started out slowly and gradually built up to race pace and you will too. One thing that helped me (and still does) is strength training. I try to do that twice, sometimes three days a week. I don’t think I could have completed the half-marathon this past January without it. I really didn’t start my exercising until August so you have an earlier start and you can do it! I second the Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. Very inspirational and he has some good walk, walk/run, and running plans to train you for the half. As for jogging being the devils work, Ha! When I started, I could not run more than about 20 seconds. I still don’t run too much now (mostly walk) but I’m trying to go for the walk 3 minutes/run 2 minutes interval for my training for the full. That’s my goal. Anything beyond that is gravy.
Matt – you are getting speedy. Ah, to be young and fit. Keeping my fingers crossed that you won’t get deployed.
Martha – you are super woman! Great run. You just started all of this and you are already fast! Good going!
Leana – I don’t think I’ll be seeing you at the Nike event. You’ll be way ahead of me with that kind of pace. ;)
Craig – yes, London is so expensive. So is the rest of Europe. I’m going to be spending two weeks in Italy in May and two weeks in Austria and Hungary in June so I’m trying to find all the cheap eats places before I go. By the way, what a way to celebrate your 30th anniversary! Awwwwww.
Jackie – sending PD for your foot. Sounds like Craig has a lot of good advice for you.
Steve – whew! Sounds like you are getting a lot in for your Tri. Good luck with the training.
Andrew – those bike shorts really help the rumpus. I can’t go without them any more whenever I get on the bike….and I have a cushioned seat!
Kristin – glad you are feeling better. I’m sure you’ll do much better after you are feeling up to par.
Heather – good luck with the house business. We’re trying to move into a new house and get our house ready for sale as well. Ugh!
Howard – good luck with the rest of the semester. You’re almost done!
Jen – :rotfl: on the receptionist. Hope you find a good candidate soon.
Stephanie – rough life. :beach:
Jimmduck – :welcome: Good luck with your training. Now is a good time to train to get ready for the training. You can do it! I was quite heavy when I started (and I still have ~ 50 pounds to lose.) The Marathoning for Mortals book and the inspirational stories on this board were two lifesavers for me for this past WDW half- marathon. We’re glad to have you here.
Judy – in answer to an earlier question….I will be spending a week in Rome and a week in Florence. We plan to use Florence as a base to see the different areas of Tuscany. What town or area did you stay in? Any recommendations for places not to miss?
As for me, I saw a Podiatrist last Monday. I have a mild case of Achilles tendonitis in my right foot and a sore/painful left foot (at the top) but no fractures. Whew! However, he did say that I have a broken bone in the bottom of my left foot (up around my big toe area). I’m not experiencing any problems or pain from it. He said that some people have problems with this type of fracture and others don’t so we’ll leave it alone for now.
On another note, he told me that I have high arches. Because of this, I need to loosen the shoe strings in the area where the hump of my left foot meets the shoe tongue. He said that was probably what was causing me to experience pain in that area. One running store said I have flat arches and sold me some shoes for this. I ran in the wrong shoes for the half-marathon! I knew they never felt quite right after a few weeks of training in them but because I was a novice, I didn’t trust my instincts enough to change. And besides, after paying $130 for the shoes, I was too cheap to buy another pair right away. I’ve learned my lesson.
Oh, a tip my Podiatrist gave me regarding blisters (a major problem I had during the WDW half). This may not be anything new to most of you. My doc was a runner at one time and he also worked with athletes in the Army. He told me to spray my feet with Right Guard (or some other deodorant. Next, put on those ankle hose (anklettes? I think they are called). Ladies, these are the hose we used to put on while trying on shoes. On top of the anklettes, put on the running socks. He said that most of his men liked this method. I’ll have to give it a try.

Oh, Becky, I wish I'd have known ahead of time that we were going there and that it was near you. What a beautiful area for your LR/W. We saw many runners and walkers there and I was envying them that opportunity on warmer days. We stopped there on our way back from the Bee Hive restaurant. What a wonderful lunch! Good evening all!!!
Martha-- GREAT run!!
Christa-- Only 65 days... eh, I'm not impressed. :rotfl2: Actually, I used to do open water swims back in the day after I stopped swimming competitively---- that's a interesting beast. There no where you can properly train for swims of that distance and simulate race conditions, so you kind of have to do the best you can in the pool and just go.
Steve--Part of what I like about Higdon's intermediate II is that it is so aggressive. I figure that if I want to follow that plan, it will require quite a bit of training during the summer to get ready for it AND with three 20 milers, I would be sure to get at least 2 in... it's not such a gamble with the Michigan weather.
Jimmduck-- :welcome: Hope to see you posting often!
OK, so I wasn't QUITE out at 5am this morning.. it was more like 7:00. I had planned to go to bed right at 10, but I have developed this thing for Brothers and Sisters and then this news story about this woman and her twice-baked potato Easter miracle on the news, it was more like 11:15. So I hit the snooze button. Seven times.
I did get two miles in before I had to turn back in 17:-something. (8:42/mile, I remember). :cool1: I was pretty happy with getting SOMETHING in. I have to say, it would have been three miles in warmer weather. Not because I was uncomfortable in the 24 degree temperatures, but because it takes so darn long to get dressed and ready to get out there. All those layers and such... At least I had a good workout at the gym this evening. Hoping for an earlier bedtime and a longer run tomorrow morning.
Happy training!

Kathy - pixiedust: for the shoulder and the upcoming knee surgery.
Matt - Just reading your posts makes me tired! What an awesome week!
Christa - I agree that $65 is high, but if I were already there, it would be a no-brainer. I'm just trying to figure out how to swing another trip between the June vacation and the January one - PLUS spend $65 to enter the race!
Leana - Might want to reconsider that route! Be careful!
Craig - Thanks so much for all the tips on PF. I printed them out so I won't have any excuse not to use them! I'm assuming you kept running while treating it?
Steve - I agree with you on the swimming. I love the idea of swimming laps; then I get in the pool and just can't get the breathing thing. Good for you for even trying!
Andrew - Maybe we need WISH bike shorts now?
Kristin - Hope you're feeling better! The good news is that the setbacks are usually short-lived.
Jen - Gee, I'd like to work 6am-2pm too. You can get a lot more work done when there's no one in the office!
Stephanie - Enjoy the vacation - don't know how many more details I want to hear!
Jimmduck - :welcome:
Cam - Keeping up with this group should definitely count as cross-training, especially since it takes up so much time!
Meghan - There's an Indy mini-marathon? Bet I can get DD to train for THAT! Was thinking about you today and wondering when the teams arrived and you'd be heading to the track.
Susie - Sounds like you had a great visit with the podiatrist. Hope it helps!
Kevin - I'm DVRing Brothers & Sisters too! Good for you for getting out there!
I can't decide whether I should take a few more days off, or try to run a couple of miles. I think I'll try the bike tomorrow morning and use Craig's icing technique for now.

Thanks for the encouraging words guys.
I do indeed enjoy John Bingham's work and have "Marathoning for Mortals".
I have at least four 5ks, and at least three 10ks planned this year - and will decide by the October 10k if I think the Donald is doable.
I agree about the strength training - was doing some work today - and boy are my muscles sore!
Am still getting used to new orthotics.
Anyway, this group is great and I enjoy being here.
Glad I "dropped in".

Jackie,
I'm just hanging in through this little dry spell until the race in Japan - after that the action picks up again. I'm planning my first trip to Indy for pole qualifying weekend, but I might sneak over there for a few practice sessions earlier than that. It all depends on the weather!
Anyway, the mini-marathon typically sells out well in advance and I think it is always the first weekend in May. This is the website: http://www.500festival.com/marathon/. I'm hoping that someone here has done it before so that I can get some more details about the course. It looks like they run around the track, which would be very cool. With so many of us willing to travel to Chicago, maybe we can get a big group together in Indy next year. It's an easy city to travel to.

Hi guys! I only have a second to post, I'll have to catch up with every one later. I just wanted to post that I had an excellent 5 miler today and I am so excited about it. 5 miles, 52:46, 10:31 ave pace, NO PAIN!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: I haven't be able to run that fast since early December!! :dance3: :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:

OK, have not had tiem to catch up. What a day! Need to work on taxes now. :(
I did see a PT today. I have an irritated piri formis (booty muscle to those around here. ;) ) It is annoying my sciatic nerve. They did ultrasound on it and gavwe me a page of stretches. The pain in my toes went away for morst of the day. I'm thinking that it's irritated from sitting on it too much during the day. She gave me a stretch I can do at my desk, though, and that helps a bit. I go back tomorrow and Thursday. The PT I had was not for athelets, but she knew her stuff. My PT tomorrow will be. He will help me with what I should be doing about running. On teh bright side, if one partial session helped, I should see a big diff after more and doing the stretches twice a day. Let's hope.
Melissa, Dave and anyone else with booty pain. I have a sheet with 4 stretches that work really well. PM or e-mail me (wtpclc@sbcglobal.net) and I'll send them your way.
Hope everyone had great weekends! I'll work at catching up tomorrow!

I've really got to look into doing the Indy mini-marathon sometime. Maybe next year? Has anyone here done that one? What was it like?
Meghan--I have a good friend at work who does this race every year with his wife and they love it. I want to say they've done both the 5K and the half marathon at different points. I know the half marathon actually makes a lap around the speedway, but I think the 5K course does not. Apparently, there are quite a few people who do this race (15,000 or something like that :confused3 ). Is it too late for you to register for this year's race? If I remember correctly, he said they had to register fairly early last year.
If you end up doing it, let me know how it is, because we only live about 2 hours from Indy and Krista and I would love to try this race sometime. Problem is, it's always the same weekend as the Flying Pig here in Cincy, so unless you try a "goofy challenge" for the weekend, you can't do both of the races. :)

We also went to the Lobster Hut on Saturday. You have lots of great choices around there! :thumbsup2
OMG! The Beehive is across the street from where I live!! How funny that you were that close! When did you go to the canal? We were there on saturday afternoon around 4pm. Did you walk on the cape side or the plymouth side? I just read your reply to my DH and he could not believe it. What a small world!

Good evening everyone.
Crossed trained at home this evening. Decided to conduct an experiment for the next month by doing bodyweight exercises (pushups, pullups, dips, etc.) on my non-running days.
I want to be buff when we go to the World over Mother's Day weekend. :lmao:
Here's the exercises I did this evening (2 circuits),
Pushups - 1 x 20, 1 x 6 Diamond pushps (Hands close together)
Crunches - 2 x 50
Pullups - Static holds x 2 **Static holds are 10 - 15 seconds in duration**
Knee Raises - 2 x 12
Dips - 1 x 5, 1 x 2
Chinups - Static holds x 2 **
Ended the evening with a set of five burpees (Check it out Burpees (http://www.rosstraining.com/articles/burpeeclip.htm))
Object of the game is to perform 3 to 4 circuits almost non-stop. We'll see where we're at in a month. :)
Cam - Sounds like you had a great time.
Becky - Good luck with the LR this week.
Meghan - Have fun at IMS. I've been to two 500s, 1969 and 70. Hopefully, I can make it up there one year for the Brickyard 400.
Krista - Great job!!
Carrie - Take care.
Susie - Take care.

I would love to do this event. It was on RW's top 10 Half Marathons. Registration is limited to 35,000 :scared1: :scared1: and closes months before the event. The course does include a lap around the Indy Speedway, how cool would that be?? The problem is that it is the same weekend as the Minnie and the Pig. But......I am only guessing, but..... just think how cool the bling is??!!
I also think it would be cool to do the Las Vegas Full/Half marathon in Dec. I had every intention of doing the half this year, but it is a week earlier than last years and it doesn't fit in my schedule. Darn. The bling is shaped like the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign. WISHers could really take Vegas by storm!!

JimmDuck - Welcome to the group! I feel for your friend at the WDW full. I had to drop out at 21 1/2 miles due to severe blisters. I was totally bummed.
Mel - Hope the foot is feeling better!
Vic - I hated doing diamond push-ups! We used to have to do them in my martial arts class. They killed my arms!
Pat - I'd love to add the LV bling to my collection!
Susie - I'm in! I got one of the random entries to the Nike 1/2 in SF!  Both my niece and I got an entry. Now I just gotta get this achilles to heal!
On the bummer side is that since I'm going to SF on Oct. 21st, I won't be going to the TofT race on Oct. 27th. :sad1: I'll have to save that race for next year.
PT is going ok. Just gotta be patient.

Cam – You got a lot of training (even if it wasn’t “formal”) in for being out of town. That’s great!
Becky – Glad to hear your training is going well!
Meghan – Awesome job on the 4-miler!
Christa – Leave it to the kids to be brutally honest when you don’t want them to be! Though I doubt the shorts are that bad.
Kevin – Great job on the run this morning!
Krista – WTG!! You rock! :cool1: :thumbsup2
Carrie – Glad that those stretches already seem to be helping. I don’t envy you for the tax work. Blech.
Vic – Great job! I think I’d end up landing face first into the cement if I tried one of those Burpees. Bet they’re effective, though!
DH and I went the TM route again tonight. Did 3.4 miles in 48:01 - and some big firsts:
First time that I've run for 4 minutes straight (only once in the workout, but I'll take it!)
First time that the 2 minute running intervals actually felt good instead of feeling almost out-of-reach hard.
Splits for the three full miles were 13:25, 13:42, and 14:01. First time I've kept a sub-14:00 for all three miles (ok, technically I was :02 away).

Terri - Congrats on getting in! Maybe we can all do a mini WISH meet in SF that weekend. I'll be there with two of my girlfriends - they will be walking the half. Too bad about ToT though! Good luck with the healing.
jimmduck - Be sure not to wait too long on registering if you really want to do the event. I'm sure it will be full long before October.
I got a 3 miler in on the TM tonight. I now remember why I hate TM running so much... but I was being a wimp and I didn't want to run in the rain. Unfortunately I hit the stop button on the TM instead of pause right at the end so I'm not too sure what my pace was for the night. Tomorrow evening I have to head to a landowner consultation meeting for work in a small town that is about 2-3 hours away so Tuesday is now a rest day.
Sunday I'm thinking about volunteering at the Chinook Half Marathon here in Calgary. I want to see first hand a little bit of the excitement from these longer races, get a few ideas for some new running routes, plus we get brunch at the Sheraton (along with the runners) for volunteering. That's where I have ressies to take my mom for Mother's Day so I'm kind of keen to scope the spread out. Not to mention, I like free breakfast! :dogdance:

TXAng - Great job on the run. Glad the running intervals are getting easier.
Vic - Impressive workout! And no offense, but I hope to NOT to have to call any police communications/dispatch type folks this week.
Jimmduck - just want to let you know that you will probably need to sign up within the next couple of months. Last I heard, the Donald is 65% full and may fill up way before October.
I second that. Don't wait too long and miss out on the fun. You can do it!
Terri - Congrats on getting in the Nike 1/2. Also, congrats on being so smart with your recovery!
Steve - My complete inability to do much more than splash around in the pool is just one reason I'll never be a candidate to try a tri. My DD10 is an excellent swimmer but she surely didn't get it from me. Come to think of it, I've seen the mailman doing laps at the pool and he's really good. Hmm, wait a minute here.... No, no, just kidding.
Nothing super exciting (or even mildly entertaining) for me. Ran 10 miles yesterday morning as the first run of my longest week on the training schedule. I've got 5, 5, and 20 milers :scared1: scheduled for the rest of the week and then it's all taper from there.
Take care everyone.

Krista - Good to hear about your pain free 5 miler! Was that with our without your inserts?
Vic - I love the clippie! Would love to do the race too, but just not in the cards.
jimmduck - Welcome to the team!
Jackie - Only if I can have my name across the back!
Carrie - Good news to hear! Hope those stretches work out real well and you get back to 100% with your training!
This is a quick post, I will catch up with everybody tomorrow, sorry.
After work, I had intended on 4 miles of run/walk (4min/1min) on the TM, but I was sooo pooped after 3.5 that I walked a bit longer and then just stopped. I think I may save my longer training sessions for my days off.
Day off tomorrow, should be posting about my new bike shorts (sans a modeling photo).
Happy Training!

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:
Wow, I got behind this week. It's Tuesday, and this is my first post, sheeze... Slowly but surely my booty's been feeling better. Boy, you heal slower when you get older. I ran 3 miles on the TM yesterday in 28:20 min/9:30 mpm pace, and felt pretty good.
Krista- I did see that you had a close call with a car over the weekend. I'm glad you are OK. And great job on the pain free 5 miler. Did you take the inserts out? Wow, I hope that's the end of your pain.
Christa- Glad DD9 princess: liked the butterfly run. I need to do that again with my princesses princess: princess:. Our training's really been falling off since the weather turned cold.
Kristi- I have a stick. I used to use it a lot, but not so much anymore. I should dig it out again. I really liked it.
OK, I'll never catch up with everyone, but I just wanted to say hello.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
As part of Joints in Motion, our registration at any event (yes even Goofy) is guaranteed if we decide to participate. So I don't need to worry about registering now. I would never wait until October otherwise - I hear you. We have already signed for the fun run, as that does not get covered by JIM.
We will continue fundraising - and I will decide after my October race if I will make another Donald attempt in 2008 or defer the money to another calendar year.
I look forward to being involved more on this list. You folks are great - love the enthusiasm.
Wish I lived closer to Florida, but, alas, reside in Atlantic Canada, which makes frequent travel to Disney difficult.
Would love to do that October race sometime.
Have a great day guys.

Greetings Race Team -
I'm so far behind I'll never get caught up. So here's a collective "Greetings!" for everyone!
I did 8 miles on Sunday. Most of it against the wind and in sideways snow. I just could not do 8 on the TM. It stopped after a while. Too bad it was so windy. I really wanted to wear my bunny ears. Anyway, I was happy with most of it. I won't bore you with my splits. Suffice to say the average was 13:36, but I did do a lot of hills, which totally slowed me down. However, I countered that with some 11:00s and a 9:00s! I thought for a minute I was wearing Charlie's Garmin. Mine NEVER sees that kind of speed!
The good news my knee didn't hurt. Well, until 4:00am yesterday morning. I woke up because they both hurt. But not in the way it was hurting before. This was just regular soreness.
I think the only thing that is going to help my knees and my time is....liposuction. :sad2:
Matt - Thanks for the explanation about what you do. And also..thanks for keeping us safe.
Krista - Whoo hoo! You are sooo fast now! :woohoo:
Carrie - I'm glad you found out what the problem is. See, we really shouldn't be sitting at desks all day long. Let's find something better to do. :upsidedow
Terri - Congratulations on getting in the Nike Half! :cool1:
Kristi - I think Cam told me Howard has one of those and loves it. :thumbsup2
BTW, Charlie and I were discussing our vacations and races. We have an 8 day Carnival cruise out of New York scheduled for September 24th. I was going to suggest to him that we take a shorter cruise out of Florida after the ToT13K. He beat me to the punch and said let's just cancel the cruise and stay at WDW a few more days then maybe go over to Cape Canaveral.... Yippee! OK, nothing against Carnival, but we've been on three cruises in the couple of years and I'm secretly planning a DCL trip for him next spring which will make that cruise even better of we don't go on one in the fall. Plus, YAY more days at WDW! :dance3:
I love it when a plan comes together. :cool2:

Wow, you guys post alot. There's so much to catch on and this has been such a busy period for me, I can barely read all the posts much less reply to them. I am in total awe at how you always respond to everyone individually. I am rapidly approaching dementia and can barely remember what was posted 2 replies back!
Yesterday I received the WISH shirts that Cam was kind enough to lend to Nancy and me. Suddenly it's all starting to feel real. I'm getting scared but am also very excited. Our event is now less than 3 weeks away.
I'm looking ahead to the WDW event in January and starting to plan for it. Is there usually a WISH group get-together of some sort? If the Donald is on Saturday and the Mickey on Sunday, when and where is the gathering usually held? Do most people go to the after-party at Pleasure Island? After my daughter ran the full, she was too tired to even go back to the parks and just wanted to veg out. The PI event was the last place she wanted to be.

How wild is that? We walked on the canal on Friday around 1:00. We intended to do brunch at the Dunbar Tea Room but it is under construction, so we ended up at the Bee Hive -- excellent! x-post from the Minnie thread:
Okay, I am glad to report I got some training in last night. 60 minutes on the TM. The first 30 was intervals of walk 3 at 4.0-4.2 mph then jog 2 minutes at 5.2 mph. I did 2.28 miles in 30 minutes (278 calories) -- pace 13:09!!!! Then I was going to quit but decided to do some incline work. OMG, incline work is NOT easy! I stayed mostly around 4 mph but increased the incline gradually from .5 - 5.0. I did 2.07 in 30 minutes (14:30 pace) and burned 270 calories. I am just going to take a book and do the bike tonight for at least 30 minutes. Does anyone know whether there is any advantage to doing the upright bike versus the recumbent?
ETA: Terri -- so glad you got into the SF 1/2 marathon. :yay: My partner got word this morning that she did, too. She is so excited! I'll tell her to look for WISH shirts!

Kristi--I've thought about getting The Stick for Stephen and I too. I've heard good things about it. If you haven't bought it yet, check www.runningwarehouse.com--where Mel got us the discount, I know I saw them there.
Carrie--:wizard: for your booty!!! I'm so glad it wasn't something more serious.
Judy--I like the way Charlie thinks!!! You are a lucky girl. :goodvibes : Awesome job on the 8 miler, I know what you mean about just HAVING to get out. It was so cold on Saturday, but I knew if I did my 10 miler on the TM I would be miserable the entire time. By the way, I'd pay money to see you running in bunny rabbit ears!! :rotfl:
Jimmduck--WELCOME!!!!!!! :yay:
Dave and Andrew--I did my 10 miler run and my 5 miler run WITHOUT the inserts. My ankle was a little sore after the 10 on Saturday, because my ankle does roll out quite a bit, so it's absorbing all the shock. I guess I need to go see a podiatrist some day and get custom orthodics, but right now I feel like why mess with something that really isn't causing major problems. I'm lifting weights, so my quads, hamstrings, and glutes are getting stronger, which will help with any future IT band problems. My ankle rolling while I run is completely my gait and a genetic thing as my Mom has the same problem.
Vic--WOW!! That xt looks impressive! You are going to be like the Incredible Hulk pretty soon. ;) I keep telling myself I need to be more disciplined with my toning, bathing suit season is right around the corner. I just got a resistance band, now I need to figure out what to do with it. :)
Terri--Congrats on getting into the Nike Women's Marathon. :cheer2: That's on my list. By the way, did you see last week when I posted that I saw you on the WDW Marathon Race Re-Cap DVD? It was during the full marathon section when they showed the starting line.
TXAng--Congrats on the run!!! :cheer2: Those are a lot of firsts!! That is awesome.
Jen--Do you have a new assistant yet? How frustrating!!! I'd like to work 6-2 also, that would be awesome!! ;)
Erin--Good to see you again!! Don't be such a stranger!
Cam--That route sounds lovely! I do all my runs in our neighborhood and while I can get a 4 mile loop out of the roads, I'm starting to get bored. By the way, I have been cooking up a storm thanks to all the tips I got on here. By making a list of what we are going to eat a week in advance and going to the grocery store and getting everything that I need that week, I know I always have something on hand and can never use the excuse "I don't know what to make" again! Even when I don't feel like making what we were supposed to have that night, I have the ingredients on hand to make something else. Last night we had pot roast with sweet potatoes. It was GOOD!!
Susie--I put Body Glide on my feet for long runs, just as a precaution. I've tried deodorant too, but Body Glide works better. I hope your feet heal themselves quickly!! :wizard:
Martha--Awesome run on Sunday!! How is Lesley feeling?
Leana--How bad is Sanjaya going to be tonight?
Bekkiz--WELCOME!!!!! :yay:
Mel--Great job on sticking with the run! I agree, once you have your base, running in 90% mental. :wizard: with your daughter!
Stephanie--I am so jealous!! How dark is your tan?
Melissa--How many bikes have you sold this week?
Kathy--:wizard: :wizard: :wizard:
Christa--We needs pics of the new bike shorts!!!! Did you ground your daughters for saying the shorts make your butt look big? The next time they say that, just start singing "I like big butts and I cannot lie" while shaking your booty. :rotfl2:
I know I missed people, but this is taking me FOREVER to post. I think I started this hours ago. Tonight is xt, I think I'm going to bike for 20 or 30 minutes (depending on traffic and how quickly I can get to the Community Center) and then lift weights.

Hi Everyone,
I've been so busy I haven't had much time for DISing. Luckily, I've gotten my training runs in. After having 2 such great runs last week I'm feeling a bit unmotivated this week. I guess every run can't be the best ever. I'm sure the cold weather isn't helping. I've heard reports of more snow this week. Nooooooo!!
Jimmduck and Bekkiz: Welcome. I think you'll find lots of inspiration and good advice on this thread.
Martha and Craig: Nice run. It's great that you can run together.
Jackie: Good luck with your foot pain.
Steve: Good luck with the swimming. I'm not the best swimmer either. A few years ago I joined a pool so that I could swim during lunchtime. After one workout the life guard approached me to say that he offered adult swim classes if I was interested. I guess my form is pretty bad. It doesn't help that I don't like to get my face wet. I stopped going shortly thereafter.
Kevin: Good luck with the 5AM runs. That's way too early!!
Krista: Congrats on 2 great runs. Sorry the inserts didn't work out for you.
Carrie: Good luck with the PT. Glad to hear it's already feeling a bit better.
TXAng: Nice job on running for 4 minutes.
Vic: Good job on your race and your calestenics.
GoofyGuy: Congrats on finishing your race.
My apologies to all I've missed.
Have a great day everyone.

Total drive-by right now. :car: I never even took my laptop out last night so I missed posting yesterday. I really hope to be less of a slug tonight, but wanted to say "Hi" to everyone!
I'll be running speed work after work today. I'm not sure if it will inside or outside but whichever is fine with me. I may try for 40 minutes today.
I hope everyone has a fabulous day and I promise to try and respond to everyone later tonight!!

Hey all, thanks for the welcome back, I will try to be less of a stranger. I am currently in New york looking forward to when I move back to Florida with one of my friends. I am doing database validation type stuff here. It is fun but very repetitive.
Well my race calender is not at all like Lynne's. 5k with mom and Lynne on april 21, Make a Wish 5K on may 5. Then might do tri at Miskoka. Then Full 08 hopefully. Oh and I forgot about ToT. Well I should get back to work.:surfweb:

Steve - Both the 1/2 and 5K have been closed for awhile. (The 2006 race closed in December! :scared1: Can you believe that?!) That's okay with me because I wouldn't have been ready for this year, but I'm really thinking about it for next year. I would just love to run on the speedway because I am such a racing dork! I know that the Flying Pig is a popular event around here, but it would be cool to get a small group together at Indy.
Vic - Some people think that it is a tragedy to have NASCAR at IMS. I'm not sayin' I'm one of them, but you'll never see me at the Brickyard 400. :rolleyes1 I'm an open wheel fan all the way! My two sisters are big NASCAR fans, so it's an ongoing family disagreement.
Pat - You should keep Indy in mind for next year. You're right, we'll have to sign up early! I'll have to look for a picture of the medal - I bet it is really cool.
TXAng - great job! I'm just getting to the point where I can run for 4 minutes without wanting to die, so I know exactly what you mean. 4 miles is great, too!
Cam - I also suffer from problems with my sacroiliac joint. If you can point me towards some helpful exercises, I would really appreciate it. I can't seem to find anything online and my doctor hasn't been very helpful.

OK, I caught up, but did not take notes.
Meghan - SOund slike you're making fgreat progress!
jimduck - Welcome!
Erin & Kathy - Great to see you both!
Solo - Yikes! you're making me feel like a slacker. Good thing I can start running agian tonight! Woo hoo for almost being done for the year!!! (So sorry I'm behind, but I'm very glad that Mark's ok. I hate the C word!)
Mel - Taking it easy a bit, ice and advil should make the hot spot better if it is a stress fracture. Let's hope the pain stays away!
Judy - I don't know. SItting on my butt helps me to keep up with my WISH friends. ;)
Thanks to everyone again for their well WISHes. What an awesome group!
PT today told me that if I was not improving in a week, I coudl go to another facility for a video gait analysis. In the mean time, stay with training, althuogh maybe take it easy on pace. I can do that. Yay! I'll be doing extra stretches before and after, so hopefully, that will help. I just love places that "know better than to tell you not ot run". ;) Then again, with the way life's been, it's been a good time for a break.

Thanks for the advice guys! I ordered the marathon stick from runningwarehouse just now. I even shipped it to my parents' house so as not to blow the surprise! :ssst:
I am scheduled to do 3 miles today - a cut-back week for me. Thank goodness! I have done nothing since the Half last week and am knee deep in paperwork since I haven't done our taxes yet!

Meghan -- the two stretches I remember being very effective involved lying on the floor with my thighs at a 90 degree angle to my upper body. One is lying on the floor and putting your legs up on the bed and scooting your bottom as close to the bed frame as possible. And the other was lying with your bottom up against the baseboard of the wall with your legs going up the wall. The critical thing, he said, was to keep the hamstring stretched and to elongate the back. Now I lie backwards over a balance ball too to help stretch my spine. I hope you find something that helps. I still swear by the combination of those stretches and aleve.

I have a brief moment between feedings and sleepings so I will try to post before being screamed at. :rolleyes1
Everyone is doing well and Timmy seems to be on a schedule right now. That is much better than Friday night where he kept us up most of the night. Needless to say, the Saturday run was canceled since I figured it wouldn't be good for me to fall asleep in the middle of it.
Yesterday I was able to get a run in and went 4.25 miles with a 10:10 pace. Apparently the break was worthwhile since the pace dropped a little. The only pain I felt was where Billy's head hit my leg earlier in the evening when were were roughhousing. So I guess I deserved that one.;)
It was raining during the run (started about a mile into it) and when I was close to the end I had a police officer take pity on me and ask if I needed a ride. I declined since I was fairly close to home by that point and it was starting to let up.
Kristi - We have a stick and love it. It gets used when our legs are starting to get sore.
Krista - Glad to hear you were pain free for a run. Hope that continues.
Welcome to the new members that I have seen.
Better go now and catch up on the next set of chores that I am getting behind on.

Okay, so which one of ya'll put a hex on my vacation weather????;) It rained all afternoon yesterday, and then pretty much after I finished my 3 miles this morning it started raining again--and it hasn't let up! I sure hope that when we head over to WDW tomorrow our weather is a little better. My IL's said that they've never had weather this bad on Spring Break--Lucky me!

Jeanne--- I was beginning to worry that you had walked off and not to be heard from again. Don't leave me now.
Cam--- Thanks so much for lending us the shirts.
Laurie--- I never did get back to you what 1/2 I am doing on 4/29. Jeanneg and I are doing the Allentown, Pa 1/2. It will the first one for both of us.
After my great 14 mile LW on Sat, I could hardly do a 4 mile yesterday I struggled to get it done. I probably should have waited until today to start walking again, but have plans for tonight so forced myself to do it Monday. Hopefully Wed 4 miler will be better.
Now the ToT event has me interested. I am actually at WDW 10/17-10/26, but maybe I will just have to extend my trip or change things around. We are staying at OKW, has anyone tried to get any DVC for that weekend?
Time to head home.

Nancy: I'm still here, but 3 of my 4 kids were home this weekend along, plus my sister was visiting since Wednesday. As a result, I trained very little last week....just XT and my sprint walks. Way too much going on around here right now. To top it all, I am hosting a dinner party for 12 tomorrow night and the house is a disaster! I hope I don't have to pull an all-nighter. Sometimes life is just insane.
I saw that you got up to 14 miles......CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! How long did it take? I'm keeping it at 12 miles until after the half. I always feel like I could go further if I had to, so I think I'll be OK. The shirts look great......since I will see you on Saturday, I'm just going to bring them with me. What are your October dates again? The Tower of Terror event sounds like fun....maybe we can swing a mini-vacation.

We are in a snow storm watch/warning for tonight. We are techincally in the watch, but on the edge of the warning area (KWIM?). So we are supposed to get snow, just don't know how much. THIS SUCKS! My race on Saturday will likely be snow or rain and in the 30's. As long as there is no wind, I think I might be able to do it. Can we get spring already??????????????????
Christa and Krista - I would totally sing the big butts song!!!!!!! As my DD6 would say "Shake your Booty!"

I just got back from my 3 miler that turned into a 2 miler. The cold air really gets to my lungs. I don't know if it's my asthma, or that I've been training indoors, or a combination of both. Either way, my lungs did not like my wogging today!
Chad has the cassette of "Baby Got Back" in his truck and plays it all the time! :rotfl:

I got in a 3 miler today. Well, at least I think it was 3 miles. I usually plan out my route using the google pedometer (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/), but I couldn't remember which house--according to the satalite picture--I was supposed to turn around at. And now I can't remember which one I actually did turn around at LOL! It was close to 3 miles though. It's a good thing I turned around when I did, because it started pouring big drops as I was walking back to my car. It began hailing a couple minutes later! So I guess it was devine providence I turned when I did :)
I also had a few equipment malfunctions--trying to negotiate cold but sunny weather=too many clothes and no pockets. But it worked out.
I'm so excited because I wanted just to be around a 19 min/mile for the 3, and I was somewhere between 17:40 and 18:30, depending on exactly how far I went (I cannot wait for my Garmin to get here!). I'm pretty happy with that, because my legs are still tired from this weekend and I still did well. I don't see any problems of reaching my mini goal of a 16 min/mile for a 5K in June.
I love hearing about all of your workouts--so inspiring. I'm sorry I don't have time to thank everyone individually. But keep up the good work!

First, about me ('cause it's all about me right? :lmao: ). I did run 40:20 of speed work and I ran outside. I ran 2 min slow 2 min fast the last 20 sec was just to get back to the car before I stopped. My legs were a bit heavy from Sunday's effort which isn't unexpected.
Now to everyone else...
Kevin: I think I get in a bit of XT trying to get all the layers on when the weather is really cold! It does add about 10 min to the routine!! :rotfl:
Jackie: how is the PF rehab coming along? :wizard: that it heals quickly!!
jimmduck: :welcome:
Krista: woo-hoo on the run! Great that it was pain-free!!:thumbsup2
Vic: can't wait to see the buff bod!! ;)
Mike: :scared1: man your training schedule for the week makes my 8 miles on Sunday and today's speed work seem a bit paultry! I know--apples and oranges! Mucho :goodvibes for good runs this week!!
Andrew: here I was looking forward to the photos!!
Dave: glad to hear the booty is getting better!
Judy: kudos to you for sticking to it in snow and wind and rain (hmmm, sounds like a new motto: through rain, sleet, snow, hail, gloom of night...)
Bill: so happy to hear that things are normal in your house! Sorry the run was rainy but sounds like it was a good one!
Nancy: we'd LOVE to see you at ToT! Do it, do it, do it (repeat).
Jen: I'll keep my fingers crossed that your snow storm is either light or not at all.
Have a great evening everyone!!

Does anyone here own one of "the stick"s?
http://www.thestick.com/products/sticksbylength.cfm#Marathon_Stick
Chad has always wanted one and his birthday is coming up soon.
I thought there was one or two versions - they have all kinds!
There is one called "marathon" so I am thinking that is the one to get.
Any thoughts from my WISH experts?
I've got the short version. I bought it at the marathon expo one year and love it! My kids think it's fun to use it on me! Almost as good as a professional massage!

I have been in recovery mode since my 1/2 in Dallas on April 1st. Today was the first day my body basically said, "Was that it? Bring on more!" So I believe I am ready to reenter training mode. Too bad there aren't anymore long races near me until fall (Houston area). I suppose I can live with 5Ks and training runs until the fall, when I hope to start marathon training.
TXAng - Good job on the increased running intervals, before you know it you will be running even longer periods. What part of Texas are you in?
Kristi - Thanks for posting about the stick, I had been thinking about getting one. I am surprised I never thought of posting the question here myself.

Yeah this is me moseying in *innocient look*. I sometimes get a chance to just lurk for a week or two but I'm rather swamped. I just did the Crescent City Classic 10K in New Orleans. Freakin FREEZING! Okay 46 degrees with a steady NE 8 mph wind and 20 mph gusts. Yikes! And after the nice 85 degree marathon in January...something is messed up! Anywho, I finished in 55:55 a 9 min/mile pace which I am darned proud of thank you much! Much improved over last year's 1hr 17min
Question for those who ran/jogged/walked the Half and Full this year and actually took notes on course: What/When were the food stops on course? I think I remember a Clif Shots stop during the half and I know there was a oranges/bananas stop about halfway in the marathon, a Clif Shot stop somewhere in the middle of a highway, and the chocolate bars stop near mgm...so what were those mile markers and am I forgeting any? I did learn that I actually like the Apple Pie Clif Shots because the flavor works when they are hot. I'm planning on running my own little Goofy this summer around June 22/23, kicking off at 6 for the half and 4 for the full so I'm not in as much of the heat. Then I get to start training for the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon that's the first weekend in Dec (oh that just doesn't have the same ring as Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend *sigh*). I'm hoping to finish my half in under 2hrs this time and my full in under 5 hrs...we'll see.
And I'm back to needing Gatorade when I run and actually paying attention to hydrating since I'm running longer long runs and it's about to get hot. So I reread in MFM and saw (A) I should be hydrating during my shorter runs 8-12 oz per 15-20 min OOPS! I have rather been neglecting that--completely. (B) I should be hydrating the same amount during my LRs and HELLO that's a lot of fluids to carry though I think I will work my way up to that as it gets warmer. I ramble...sorry!
I'll try to keep up and actually post more oops! TTFN

Andrew – Good job getting that 3.5 miler in. It’s hard to do on a work night!
Dave – Glad to hear you’re feeling a little better.
Stephanie – Bummer about the lousy vacation weather.
Bekkiz – Great job getting those steps in! A 16:00 mile sounds totally doable by June.
Tiberius – I’m in the Austin area.
What is this stick that y’all are talking about? A massage tool? How does it work?
Rest day here today, so we went to Target and picked up a couple more shirts for running. And we got started on this thinking it would be a cheap hobby! :rotfl:

Good evening everyone!
3 miles on the TM this evening due to weather. 12:30 pace at a 2% incline.
Terri – I had a hard time keeping my balance. Must be too much girth. :rotfl:
TXAng – Those burpees were getting pretty sloppy towards the end.
Leana - Good job on the TM run.
Mike – If you don’t call us this week we’ll understand. :confused3 :)
Andrew – I’ll probably never make it to the race, but I can dream about it.
Dave – Great pace!
Judy – You go girl! :thumbsup2
Cam – Great job with the training!
Krista – It’s a great workout. Check this out Ross Training (http://www.rosstraining.com) he’s published a workout manual called Never Gymless. It includes exercises with bands. May be something to check out. Check out the videos at the bottom of the page.
Cindy – Glad to hear you’re getting your training in.
Meghan – I understand about stock cars at Indy. The NASCAR purists would probably be saying the same thing if the IRL was racing at Daytona. I think it would be a great show. NASCAR is my first love, but I enjoy watching different types of racing. Cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, it doesn't matter to me.
Bill – Glad to hear the little one is settling in. Great job on the run.
Stephanie – Sorry to hear about the weather.
Bekkiz – Great job on the 3 miler!
Martha – I’m going to give Fabio a run for his money. HA!! :lmao:
Claire – great job on the 10K.

Krista - I missed your post last week. I had to run to see myself on the cd. That's so cool. Good thing I didn't blink and I had that nice, bright lime green shirt on ;) No autographs, please!:teeth:
Minnie - I love going in September. I'm going late Aug. this year, only because my school starts on Sept. 4th. It's still hot enough to enjoy the pools and water parks, but the crowds aren't as bad as summer.
Claire - I remember getting oranges along the road outside the Grand Floridian and bananas when leaving MK. I don't like the Cliff shots so I avoid them.
Judy - You've got a man who has got his priorities right - more Disney! :thumbsup2
Leana - I'd definitely be up for a mini-WISH meet in SF in Oct. :)
Cam - How ya doing?

After my daughter ran the full, she was too tired to even go back to the parks and just wanted to veg out. The PI event was the last place she wanted to be.
The WISH dinner has traditionally been on Fri. We usually get together around 4 or 4:30 so we can eat en masse without overtaxing one of the restaurants. POP food court worked out well last year. Rhonda coordinated an Illuminations dessert party last year on Sun night. And there's a post-race breakfast on Mon for medal photos. If anyone has ideas for 2008, we can start brainstorming anytime!
I did manage to run on the TM last night (sorry 'bout the wet weather, Stephanie :umbrella: ). Foot's getting better. A lot of LTO this week...I'm taking Kaley up to All Kids this afternoon for a followup CT on her renal cyst. Just making sure it's still behaving itself. And trying to get her into an out-of-county high school research program has been annoying :headache: . She's training for Minnie, but had some knee problems this weekend.
Minnie...we usually go Labor Day weekend. Sept is a bit steamier than July...and potential for hurricanes is much greater. We never used to worry about that, but after the last few years...
:wizard: and hello to everyone! Sorry to be so MIA these days :guilty:

Leana - Wow, you're doing great with your workouts....I love going to organized fitness classes.
Christa - I agree w/you $65. is expensive for 8 miles, but what can you do, it's Disney. By the way what is "the stick"?
Beddiz - Welcome:flower3:
Matt - 89 miles in one week??? Man, that's great!
Stephanie - Have fun on vacation...lay out in the sun for me.:3dglasses
Jimmduck - Welcome:flower3:
Mel - Are we sticking with Pop for dinner, or trying another location?
Carrie - Glad to hear you are pain free:grouphug:
My training is going good although my tm is acting up again:mad: I'm going to use it til it blows! ha,ha. Anyhoot, I'm walking every other day and taking muscle madness @ work. I've been wanting to try a spinning class, but I'm afraid it maybe too hard for me, ,plus those seats are killers on the backend.

Hey all. Not much new to report. It is starting to snow here, so I am really bummed. I did a little balance ball work in front of the TV last night and tonight I will run the indoor track while DD6 has gymnastics.
Claire - During the 1/2, there were bananas as your exited MK, I think that is around mile 6. The Cliff Shots were around mile 10, on the highway just before you go up the on-ramp.
Carrie - YAH on no pain. I have pain on my right foot on the rear part of the arch. It comes and goes and I can't figure out what is causing it. It started about a month ago, on and off. Hmmm..
Mel - We are thinking of heading to WDW on 8/18 for a week. Right before school starts. I worry about hurricanes, but I figure I can take my chances. Stuck at WDW can't be that bad. We are thinking of trying POP for the first time.
OK, gotta get to work. Things are very stressful here, which makes it no fun at all.

Jen - Oh no! That does nto sound good. It sounds like PF to me, but I'm not a doctor. There's a lot online about it, you may want to look. Thanks for warning me that the snow's coming. :( We're supposed to get 1 to 4".
monica - Grrr..I hope your TM starts behaving!
MOre good news. I do have one leg longer than the other. Doesn't sound liek good news, but it could be causing my current issues adn it coudl cause teh late fall hip issues I get every year. So, it'd be nice to fix that!
The Dr.'s office is supposed to be setting me up with an osteo manipulaor? :scared: Anyone else been there?

Leana--How bad is Sanjaya going to be tonight?
Last night was terrible...so boring...I can't believe they finally had something negative to say to Melinda and Lakisha. I really did like Blake's performance though. I'm surprised that Simon didn't tell Sanjaya that his performance was cabaret because it seemed so "lounge act in Vegas" to me. I'm betting Haley, Phil and Chris for the bottom three (although I didn't think Chris was that bad).
My trip yesterday afternoon was cancelled so I was able to get a workout done in the evening. Did 50 minutes of total body weights with a few cardio moves thrown in here and there. I'm sticking with my "Firm" series of workout videos for my XT days. I feel like they give me a pretty good workout. Today is supposed to be another XT day so I'll probably go for some aerobics. Really need to do some ab work too.
Carrie - Glad you have figured out a source for your problem. My right knee used to bother me as a kid and my dr at the time said that one of my legs was longer than the other. Never did anything about it though and over time my knee stopped bothering me (knock on wood). Thanks for the stretches by the way!
Jen - Yikes, hope your foot feels better soon.
monte - I haven't tried spinning but I hear it is a great workout.
Mel - Glad your foot is feeling better. A Monday breakfast meet up sounds great. I want to try and hit Chef Mickey's for their breakfast to get pictures with the characters and my medal. Me and probably thousands of other people!
Howard - Good luck with studying!
TxAng - Those shirts at Target are a great deal. I picked up a few in SA last month. I miss Target....unfortunately we don't have them up here.
OK, I must get some work done....

OK let's not even discuss this morning's XT.
Next.
Minnie - Prior to this "racing thing" we've gotten involved in...we ALWAYS went in September. It's a fabulous time to go! :thumbsup2 We usually walk right on attractions. The weather was always so pleasant. Once, though, we were there between hurricanes....I think it was in 2005. As bad as we felt for the residents - We saw a LOT of damage - We practically had the parks to ourselves!
Terri - Oh I was hoping you would autograph my CD! Can you believe...we haven't even had a chance to watch it yet??? UGH!
Oh! Oh! I think that was Howard I just saw! :yay:
Mel - Even though this year's PC Meet was my first ever WISH meet, I thought it was a great. I vote for PC again in '08. :)
Bill - OK, who's screaming at you? :upsidedow How nice of the officer to ask you if you needed a ride.
Jen - Can you believe this? More )*!%@# snow!!:headache:
Martha - HA! Sounds like I should be delivering mail! :rotfl:
Dave - We miss you.

That absolutely sounds like plantar fasciatis coming. Is the pain at the back of your arch where the bundle of tendons attaches to the bottom of your heel? If, yes then welcome to the club (we even have jackets).
On page 2 of this weeks thread is some information from Jackie, and my comments to her on how I beat PF. I'd encourage you to look at them and do some reading about it. Basically your tendons flex at every stride, and for some people, most with high arches and rigid feet, the tendons get sore and inflamed in the bundle under the ball and heel. Supportive and cushioning shoes, supportive inserts, ice, and advil got it under control for me years ago when I was much younger. Now I run, bike, and lift, never running more than 3 times a week, and PF hasn't bothered me in years. Good luck.
Carrie
Good for you getting healthy. 10 miles is impressive given your pain and tightness. We are counting on you on May 6.
For all inquiring minds, Lesley is doing very well after her foot surgery, but for me it's like having a middle schooler again. She isn't allowed to drive, so I'm taking here EVERYWHERE. The surgeon ordered her to stay on crutches for 11 days after until he saw her again, but in recovery she was doing really well and the recovery nurse whispered to me, "she'll be off the crutches tomorrow." Wrong, she was off them that evening. I have a cane from my many past leg injuries, and she gladly exchanged the crutches for the cane that night. She is allowed to put pressure on the heel only, so she can get around with the cane. Her comment was, "I feel like Martin Crane in Frasier, all I need is a Jack Russell terrier following me around."
I got my certificate and cd-rom and it brought back really bad memories. Seeing the weather on marathon sunday, including the scenes at the Magic Kingdom when you couldn't see the castle through the fog when it was only 100 meters away, reinforced just how horrible the weather was that day. Easily the worst conditions I ever raced in, and easily the worst race result ever. I mean, I've broken down before in the heat, but come on, breaking down when I only had 15 miles to go? Positive waves for 45 degrees and dry on January 13, 2008. And hopefully not too brutal at 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2007.
I lifted and biked hard yesterday, and am feeling pretty good and injury free.
Take care

10 miles is impressive given your pain and tightness. We are counting on you on May 6. Actually, 10 miles is Splanned fro Saturday. I "only" did 60 minutes last night. GOod enough fo rme , though. It helps that the pain came and went so I know that it will get better if I wait it out now. Plus, knowing there were no repercussions this am is great. Ugh, the May 6 pressure. ;) Still by no means unattainable, but I can't even think speed until next week. BTW, I love that you are going fro distance and speed now. IIRC, you always got injured when you wanted to do more than a half before. I'm so glad you've found a good balance.
Leana - I hope the one leg longer thing never does catch up to you!

Craig - Thanks for your info. I guess I should have it looked at. It started a month ago and I never had any problem before this. I wear a good shoe, so that's not it.
Is it recommended to go to a podiatrist? Or should I try the running store first. I know there are over the counter orthotics you can get. My worry with orthotics is... will they rub more and cause more risk for blisters? I really don't want that.
The pain goes away after a day rest and doesn't hurt really while I am running. Just for the day after. And like I said, no problems when I was training for the WDW 1/2. I am befuddled. The pain is not so severe that I can't live through it, it's more annoying than anything.

Jeanne--- I did all 14 miles on the TM and my body has not fully recovered. It was cold and windy and need to do my LW so I just keep going and going. I did the first 10 miles at 4.1 pace and then 10-13.5 at 4.2 but the last 1/2 mile I just walked at 3.5 for a cool down. I felt pretty confident after I completed that walk that I should be good to go at Allentown. My L hip has bothered me even since not sure what that is about. I think trying to maintain my balance for that long may have had some effect on the hip. I am going to try for 4 miles tonight. We are scheduled to be at WDW 10/17-26, but am looking to maybe extend it for a couple of day or not come down until the 21st when Erik and his GF are coming down and then stay until 10/30. I borrowed the DVC points so I have to use them. Which child didn't make it home for Easter?
Martha--- So you plan to do the ToT. Where will you be staying at?

Hi, everyone!
Craig - Thanks for letting us know how Lesley is doing. She is a trooper, isn't she?
Speaking of troopers, Martha, I have been meaning to tell you how much pleasure I get every time I see your siggie. I remember on January 6 you weren't sure you could do a 15k after your hip problems. To see how far you have come and the amazing times and distances you are posting is just so exciting! Good for you! :woohoo:
Nancy -- I am sorry you had some hip pain after your LW on the TM. I am convinced that the TM is hard on our bodies because it is relentless. All that being said, I highly recommend Aleve! ;) Take it from one who has suffered achilles tendonitis, inflamed sacroiliac joint, and severe hip pain. Sending you :goodvibes: and pixiedust: for your next LW to be pain-free!
Jen -- so sorry you are dealing with PF. That is definitely not unheard of here. I think Mel has had some good results using inserts. She'll be able to tell you better what she has learned through the process. Do you wear heels for work? My podiatrist said that actually contributes to PF and heel spurs because that tendon (?) shortens (contracts?) in heels. When I was having bad heel & tendon pain, I bought a foot wheel (I think LisaLovesPooh made the recommendation) and whenever I could I'd use it under my desk to help the bottoms of my feet. Good luck!

Just a real quick post as I have a client soon......
got in a QUICK stationary bike ride (like 6 miles:lmao: ) and 150 sit ups....not much, but it is all I had time for btwn clients.
Nancy, you ran 14 miles on the dreadmill! The most I have ever done was 10...you are DA WOMAN! I hate the dreadmill and it hurts me more than road running.
Jen - The people I know who has had PF says that it really hurts in the morning and at the beginning of the run. Once it "warms up, or gets streched out it doesn't hurt. Until the run ends then it does.
I know I missed so many, but work calls!

Jen - I'm going to the podiatrist tomorrow morning to discuss my PF issues. I'll let you know what he says! I've been using Craig's advice - icing, stretching, etc, but the pain is getting worse and more frequent, and I haven't been running at all. I'm getting worried enough that I decided to get professional advice before I do something stupid and cause long-term damage. I haven't registered for the half yet - was planning on doing it this week, but want to make sure I can run before I spend the money!
Christa - Completely :offtopic: Is your JRT a cuddly dog? DH is becoming obsessed with the idea of a JRT as our next dog, but DD and I are determined that the next one will cuddle. As much as I love Mystic, she does NOT cuddle!
Minnie - We've been once in September, and LOVE it then! The weather is great, but the crowds are non-existent. (Of course, we went before they started offering free dining). If DD were still in year-round school, we'd be there every September.
Carrie - Hooray for no pain! Hope the improvement continues. Between all our doctor and PT visits, maybe someone can set up a WISH discount for the medical community?
Most of my news is above in my comments to Jen. I keep trying to get up and use the bike, but the motivation isn't quite the same. Maybe tomorrow? DD leaves for her band trip and will be gone until Sunday, so I'll have a little extra time. I hate to lose all the momentum I've gained. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the doc tomorrow doesn't give me really bad news... I just want him to tell me it's okay for me to keep running!

I had terrible PF issues in the past and had to have mutiple cortisone injections to resolve the issue as all the conservative treatments didn't work. Also had the heel spur which they were thinking of shock blasting it off (sort of like they do with kidney stones), but eventually with inserts they resolved. Being a nurse I was on my feet all day and would be in tears with pain by the end of my shift. I feel your pain.
Cam-- I have never had much luck with Aleve for some reason. I'm an Advil girl. Just wonder if someday I will have a bleeding ulcer or kidney damage from all the Advil I have consumered. I used to rotate between Tylenol X strength and Advil to even out the liver and kidney damage, but now just do Advil.
Tonight did the 45 minute stretch class at the gym and that seemed to help me make it through 4.5 miles on the TM. By Friday it is to be nicer and hopefully can get to walking back outside.
Time to get dinner on the table.

Hello again!
I'm finally back. I came down with a flu/cold thing last week and unfortunately yesterday was the first day I actually felt better. It was an awful feeling not being able to do my LR this weekend and to miss all the other runs I had scheduled but I knew if I pushed myself too much it would just take longer to recover. Still, I felt fat and lazy all week. Yesterday I got back on track thought and did 6 miles on the TM in 61:00. I think in a way the illness was a hidden blessing because I REALLY missed running during the week I was out of commission. It finally stopped raining (1st sunny day in a week) today so I'm hoping to do my 4 miler outside. The treadmill is getting old but we are in our rainy season now so I think I'm gonna have to get used to it.

Coco: welcome back to training mode! Hope to hear good things re: training soon
Claire: EXCELLENT job! :thumbsup2
Angie: rest hard so you can play hard!!
Vic (Fabio): still waiting on those pictures ;)
Minnie: depends on what you are looking for. The weather will still be hot but during the week the crowds might be a bit smaller as kids are back in school. Personally, I'd wait until October but I'm single-handedly trying to get as many people to the ToT run as possible!!! :lmao:
Howard!!! Great to see you poke your head out!!! I totally understand the study thing and hope you take a break soon. The semester will be over before you know it and you can spend some very much deserved time with your excellent family!!!
Mel: hope things go well with Kaley!!!
Carrie: woo-hoo for a pain free morning!!! Wait, I'm confused. Do you have the leg longer than the other or does Judy?
Monica: I hope things quiet down once the mountain "closes."
Jen: when you do the balance ball, do you use a DVD or something on TV? If you can find one, I'd recommend a sports podiatrist over a regular podiatrist.
Leana: have fun with the weight workout!!!
Nancy: we are staying at the Swan in October. Craig, DH, being in academics, can get a discount there. Plus they have the "heavenly bedding" which beats anything hands down. I purchased the "heavenly" sheets from Nordstrom and I gotta say they are amazing!!!
Cam: Thanks!! I do take time to think about what I'm going to put for my siggie each week. I, too, am pleased with how my hip is doing. I would NEVER have thought I could do this last fall!!!!
Vic: geeze--slow down!! Where's the fire? :lmao:

Mystic is a lab/chow with a little shepherd and husky thrown in. She's smart, but has a lot of issues - won't cuddle, terrified of storms, terrified of men, hides when people come in the house (great watchdog, huh?). She'll sleep on the end of the bed, but if you try to get next to her she jumps down. She's a rescue, so we assume she had a rough start in the 4 months before we adopted her. DH wants a smaller dog for our next one (or second one if we get that brave), and he loves the idea of a JRT. I told him I "knew" someone who had one so I'd check it out! I do keep reminding him that they have a lot of energy and require a lot of exercise - like running.

OMG! I have totally surprised myself today.
I wanted to do a power mile, just go as hard as I can to see how quick I could do it. I was hoping to be somewhere around the 16 min/mile I'm aiming for for my 5K in June.
I went 13:40!!!! I did throw in a little jogging in 3 different short segments (like 50 yds or less). I can't believe I did it that quickly. Of course, I was having trouble breathing, and it took another 1/2 mile of walking before I was really cooled down (my walk back took 19 minutes), but still, I'm super impressed w/myself LOL!
I totally understand that one mile is not even close to the 1/2 marathon, but at least it's a start :)

Hi WISH Team! I am going to read some and look forward to learning how everyone is doing.
PD to those that might need it. I'm thinking of all WISH Team members often. Great to see that there are plenty keeping things moving along here.
I've managed to string together a couple of great w/o days and am thoroughly enjoying that it seems the IT band thing is in the back seat. I would like to say gone, but I am not certain of all things yet. I think I am reaching the end of the epidural (miracle) time and I'm still feeling pretty decent these days. Minnie will be here before I know it!

:thumbsup2 Jackie
If the PF gets worse, and you get an x-ray on the spot you'll see the tendon begins to calcify at the connection to the bone in the heel or ball. I do remember the x-ray of my right heel looking like I had a little tongue sticking out from the bone. The cortisone shot in the spot will reduce the inflammation and break up the bone spur, but thankfully I never had that done.
In my case it was the supportive orthotics more than anything which helped me. I have really high arches and a rigid foot, so when I strike the bottom of the foot flexes with the plantar tendon stretching away from its connection points at the ball and heel. I was running heavy miles then and it got inflammed, sore, then a bit of bone spur. The orthotics allowed me to keep running long and hard, but that was 20 years ago.
Now I run only 2 or 3 times a week, bike 2, and lift 2. Mostly I follow this schedule because my body will break down with more running sessions. This schedule is not sufficiently rigorous to allow me to run the paces I'm capable of, but it is enough to allow me to run "nice" times and be pleased with what I've done. I would encourage you to also do non-impact exercises which really work your legs and cardio system, as that will build endurance and strength without pounding your body.
I must admit, this has taken me many years to accept. I still yearn for the times I was running 20 years ago, but my body won't take the stress. My true love is soccer, but I reached a point when I got injured during matches because I wasn't training hard enough. The solution was to train harder, but unfortunately I got hurt in training. I had to walk away from my favorite sport on earth because my body wouldn't take it. This applies to my running as well. I would like to be fitter and faster, but my body won't hold together if I train for that. I am doing what I'm capable of, which sometimes discourages me, but in saner moments I realize how wonderful it is to be still out there on the course. Someday I hope to be completely comfortable with this reality, perhaps by my 80th birthday!
Remember, Vic and I are the same age. He's the Fabio of the group, I'm just trying to keep up with his example:thumbsup2 .
Take care

Good news for Kaley...her cyst is stable so annual followup now with ultrasound instead of CT
I did 41 min on the TM tonight at a 12:46 pace.
Fun with Fasciitis
Three things...ice, stretching and orthotics. I spent 9 months trying conservative treatments before using my Xmas bonus to have the custom orthotics made. I did cortisone, tape, OTC orthotics, lots and lots of Advil (vitamin I in my house ;) )...I would improve, but never completely heal. Since the orthotics, it's improved dramatically, but still not quite gone. Seems I aggravate it every so often...last time was kayaking.
Christa's right...classic PF is most painful first step in the morning, then improves. I have never had that symptom. I can't walk barefoot anymore because of the heel pain, but I also had hip pain that the pod says was me trying to compensate for the heel. It rarely hurts when I run. I've spent most of the last year in tennis shoes because almost all of my regular, cute shoes don't have enough support and hurt after awhile. I can't run on the TM with an incline because it puts pressure on the heel (though that part's getting better).
I ice and stretch every day, whether I run or not. I really need to take some time off from running to let it heal, but have only managed to do that for about two weeks last June :rolleyes1 . Calf stretches are very, very important (I also have the short Stick to help keep the calves loose). I stretch before every run, before I get in the shower, trace the alphabet with my foot (thanks, Lily!) at work, etc.
For me, orthotics were a necessity because of my foot design. I had heel spurs in both feet before I ever started running. Orthotics should NOT rub or cause blisters...if they do, take 'em back to the pod for rework. Mine made them in his office so they could also adjust as needed. I do think my orthotics push my foot forward so I'm going to have to get a 1/2 size larger shoe to compensate.
That's my saga with PF. This is partly why I've tried so many different shoes...kept hoping I'd find the magic pair that would work. I'm cautiously optimistic that it will heal before I train for the full, but I am planning to take time off afterward either way (I'm not likely to do the Sarasota half next year).
Anyone left reading...I was very impressed with the POP food court last year. They weren't expecting us but were very accomodating when they found out we had a large group. POP has a lot of different menu choices at decent prices and plenty of space. Breakfast has been at Boardwalk Bakery, but I think Carrie suggested Beaches N Cream instead for next year. There are certainly other places like Chef Mickey's or Ohana's that could be cool for breakfast. What sounds good to everyone?

MouseDogMom - Having a rescue dog does present certain quirks of behavior, but is well worth the reward. My Golden (see below) loves water to bathe, lay, roll and swim in. However, she is afraid of rain and yard sprinklers, we think she was a stray who was trapped outside in some storms. Our second (DWs dog) is a Jack Russell, definitely a bundle of energy. In mornings, I have just enough time to turn off my alarm before he jumps on me and starts licking my face...he has definitely put a crimp in my ability to use the snooze alarm.
bekkiz - good work on the mile; like me I am sure you will be surprised at your first 5K rate--my first was close to 90 seconds per minute faster than I expected.

I thought the POP food court was an excellent place for the Friday night meet. I vote we stay there. I didn't make the other meets, so I can't comment on them.
Kona Cafe would also be good for breakfast. Tonga toast! Mmmmmmm. :thumbsup2

Craig - Thanks for all the additional info. It's so hard to accept that the body isn't young anymore. I have the complication of never having been athletic when I was younger, so as an "adult-onset-athlete," all these pains and issues are even harder to handle. Add to that a spouse who was an athlete, and is still able to play (mostly) without injury. (He has suffered his share of soccer injuries and had to miss more games than he'd like to admit - age does catch up.) When I started running last year it was the first time I'd ever set a long-term goal (the Minnie 5K) and kept at it, and I was so proud when I finished. Now I want to do it again with the Donald, and I HATE the idea of injuries sidelining me. Thankfully I have lots of WISH buddies to keep me going; if I were doing this alone I would have given up long ago - certainly at the first sign of pain.
I'm hoping that the doc tomorrow (who we've seen before for ingrown toenails and absolutely LOVE) will be able to look at my feet and at least tell me where the problem started. I was beginning to feel just a little pain before I bought new shoes, but it certainly got worse with the new shoes. I told my co-workers if I don't come back after the appt to assume that he told me I couldn't run and I've gone home to mourn, but I certainly hope that's not the outcome!
Anyway, I appreciate all your advice and encouragement. Vic may be Fabio, but you can be our Jack Sparrow!

tiberius Thank you for the encouragement. I'm wondering if I should set my goal even faster--like 15:30..we'll see as the training goes on. All I know is my legs are sore :)
Dogs certainly add some interesting aspects to running/walking. Indy (my pup) gets so distracted when we go for our morning walks, I try to concentrate on my posture and stride, b/c he's too busy to allow me to move quick!

Pretty good day yesterday with a 30 min tethered swim (guessing 1000 yds ish) then a 60 min bike (bout 16 miles in the totally pouring rain). Wasn't really planning on biking in the rain, there were only a few drops but had already committed to the brick (multisport) workout. Then the skies opened up and it gave me some good practice with terrible (rain and howling wind) conditions. Today was a total stonker 4 mile run, had to insert in some walking intervals, it was HUMID beyond belief, was totally soaked through my shirt after just the 40 min.
We are now officially registered for both the 5k and 15k for the Minnie! :woohoo: Looks like I'll likely be deploying at the end of that month though. Would still let me do the Half Ironman on May 20th, although I'm holding off on ponying up for that one for a little while longer hoping it doesn't sell out. Tomorrow I'm going to hit the pool and try to swim the 2112 yards that make up the first leg of it, and if I do that successfully and don't feel completely thrashed, I'll probably give the Half a go. The pool on base is a 25 yarder though, so that's 84 one way laps. :scared1:

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:
I'm up early to try to get some work done. I'm keeping up with my training, and my booty's feeling better. A little sore and stiff at times, but nothing too major.
Tuesday I SWOGged for 30 min and stretched afterwards.
Yesterday I went down to the gym to use the TM in the gym at the end of the dat and realized I signed up for the wrong day. I almost threw in the towel, but decided to go home and run. I got home, put on my tights and headed out the door. I had a good run - 4.48 miles in 40:37 min/9:03 mpm. I felt really strong on the run, and my splits were really close in time. It was great to get outside, get some fresh air and clear my head.
My princesses, DD6 princess: and DD9 princess:, have been falling off a little on their 5K training. We haven't run this week yet. However, they have this week off of school, and our spending the week at Tae Kwon Do camp. They love it, and are getting lots of exercise at the camp. I'm counting that as x-training. I'm really letting them call whether to run or not. I don't want to push them, and have them end up not liking it.

Drive by post todyy. The kids at the track killed the old man last night. We did 400 meter pick-ups with 400 meter cool down between each total of 7 laps with each group X 3 groups. I always run the first hard lap with the front kids (pick-up at between 6 min mile and 6:40 mile pace, depending on the age grouop) then back off to the next group (pick-up at 6:30 to 7:00 pace and then for the last fast lap drop back again (pick-up at 6:30 to 7:15). Covered a total of 8 miles with warm up and cool down in a total of 1:03:35 and got in 9 speed laps.
Good training all,

Back to the dog topic....JRTs are a funny breed. Every time I take her to the vet for her yearly checkup they comment on how active a JRT is....I have to admit, mine isn't really that hyper. I tell them that a JRT who is run around 30 miles a week is not all that hyper at home.:rotfl: They just look at me like I am crazy!:confused3
Dave - That is how I feel with my princess: princess: . I don't want to push them into running and they end up hating it. Our 5k training has not gone great for about a month due to princess: 9's allergies. We are trying different meds and she is better, but just walking outside sends her into the sneezing, nose bleeding, eyes watering fit.:sad1: She really is wanting to run the 5k though.
WTG on the run!
Matt - WOW! You are the WO man!
Good news for Kaley...her cyst is stable so annual followup now with ultrasound instead of CT
 :cool1:  :cool1:  :cool1:  That is GREAT NEWS!
I totally understand that one mile is not even close to the 1/2 marathon, but at least it's a start
A mile is 1/13th of a half marathon! So it is totallly cool! WTG on that smoke'n fast wog!  Never belittle your accomplishments! You are really on track (no pun:rotfl: )
Jackie - I am sending you lots of :grouphug: and :wizard: because I know this is hard for you. But FYI, I also only run around 3x a week then bike and swim and dance the rest of the time. I used to only run and my times would not move, but when I started xtraining, I got faster....alot faster. Like from a 5 hour marathon to my WDW 07 4:12 PR.:yay: That may not be the fastest time in the world, but taking almost an hour (and remember how HOT it was this year as compared to last year) off a marathon time is OUT OF CONTROL! I hope this helps you feel better.
OOOOO! I forgot to tell you guys but I did get my WDW certificate in the mail! I was so excited to see my placing....

Christa- Wow! I'd frame that certificate w/ those placement numbers! Which form of XT do you think has been the most beneficial?
I am not really sure....I have biked more than swim. I do think the biking has made me a better runner. Swimming does too, but have not been swimming in about a month. I think it helps to do anything to build endurence. Xtraining can do this w/o the impact that running has on the body.
This is OFF TOPIC! But, I was thinking the other day when someone asked me how I had the energy to train/work/dance/momy/ect......I thought to myself isnt it funny how time and age changes things. When I was a child I was thought of as hyperactive, but now all that energy, serves me well and I am thought of as energetic.:rotfl: I guess that is why I like being a children's therapist.;) I relate. Mel -- There is so much in your post I want to respond to. :flower3:
1. I am so happy that you and Kaley got such great news!! :yay: I know that is a relief for all of you!!
2. I actually had custom orthotics made for my dress shoes because I really do have to wear heels for work some times. They cost a fortune but helped a lot for the long work days.
3. POP was an awesome choice for the Friday WISH meet. I really, really liked that they had put out many breakfast items by about 6 pm so that marathon participants could buy bagels, apples, bananas, etc. to take back to their rooms that night. Very accommodating. The CMs there actually asked us to spread the word to everyone there that if there was something they wanted and didn't see or if the shelf was empty to let them know.
4. The great thing about the Boardwalk location for Monday morning is that the pictures are gorgeous, as long as it is a nice day. :sunny: We've been lucky in that respect the last two years. Some of these other options sound great, too. I wonder whether anyone would want to consider POFQ food court since I've heard breakfast there is good and there are some not-so-expensive choices. I am afraid, though, that if we don't do something kind of centrally located and/or easily reached by WDW transportation, we may be fewer in number. :sad1:
We are now officially registered for both the 5k and 15k for the Minnie! :woohoo: Looks like I'll likely be deploying at the end of that month though.
Matt -- I am so glad we'll see you and Cheryl at the Minnie! :yay: Sorry about the deployment, though. Our friend Kevin, who ran the full with Howard (you may all remember that he forgot his rescue inhaler for his asthma on the worst of all days), is leaving for Iraq this month. He started a WISH training journal for marathon weekend in the hopes of training over there and taking his mid-year "break" to come back for marathon weekend. If anyone wants to check out his journal, his user name is kzmarathon.
Dave -- good job on motivating yourself to get out. :thumbsup2
Mike -- WOW!!!

Sweetie -- you so totally ROCK!!! I am so proud of you! I hope you get that certificate framed and hang it somewhere you and the world can see it all the time.
BTW -- I ordered the Goofy frame for Howard from Fond Memories Graphics. It has the three medals in a row. Under that it has his name, the dates of the races and his times. There are also square "medallions" of the race logos. I'll try to post a picture when I think of it. Did anyone else order from FMG this year? If so, what do you think of the product? Howard was totally shocked that I'd ordered it :lovestruc and is so happy to have the visual comemmoration of that awesome accomplishment.

My drive by...
Craig-- you words are wise as all ways regarding learning to live in one's older body. My problem is I've only made 43 laps around the sun and I have doctor after doctor tell me I've got a spine of a 70 yo.
I had my injection yesterday. This time they did an L5 bilateral block. One again I had a 30-ish dr look at my MRI and shake his head and say "you're only 43?". That always hurts. I'm a bit concerned at this point (although the instructions say you may feel worse symptoms for the first 24 hours). They did needles on both sides of teh spine. He said you will feel the medicine going down your leg. I felt it on the left but not on the right. He assured me it went were it was supposed to go, but today I have a lot of pain on my right and almost none on my left. I go back in 3 weeks for another injection.
Here's teh hard part. I am still not 100% convinced running isn't exacerbating the problem. The first nurses I met with said "running is terrible for your back". I quickly quote the orthosurgeon who told me there is absolutely no evidence of the such. She then replied she had a friend who is a marathon runner and her back is all screwed up. I dismissed that as anecdotal. The injection dr asked me to try to spend sometime on a stat bike and swimming but explained (as did Dr. Bono) that running causes a natural forward picth to the body that reduces the compression on the nerves so it's not surprising that running doesn't hurt. But walking does (big time).
So last Saturday I did my LR (supposed to be 18, turned out to be 16). The first 10 were on my TM starting at 4:30AM:scared1: (did I just say that????). I took it slow (5.0mph) with varying 1-3% grade. Then I dashed outside for teh last six miles which brought on horrible pain. But I also did quite a bit of walking and stopped for a coffee break. Maybe the pain was a result of teh walking, not the distance.
Basically, I find myself longing for a walker when I'm shopping or stuck standing in line. How sad is that? I think I could run the marathon with a "built for speed" walker! I wonder if such a thing exists? I should check with the whiz kids at MIT and see if they'd invent one!
But I am really on the fence about the VT Marathon. Every ounce of sensibility in me knows I should sit this one out. I also know I am just barely on the edge of being able to finish in the alloted time. OTH I've completed 11 weeks of training. OTH if the injection works and then stops working unusually fast, I'll blame myself for ruining it.
OTH (can someone lend me a hand, I've already used both of mine), 30 BLEEPING pounds above ideal weight is certainly making things worse. I'm so mad at myself. The weight gain is a combination of meds, depression and inabilty to sweat for 2-3 hours a day like the old days. But that's no excuse.
Oh and '08 races are filling up. More stress. Do I dare sign up for another marathon? At what point does the necessary "push past rational thought to go 26.2 miles" cross-over the true insanity line?
Drive by? I think my meter's run out!
Thanks once again for listening.
Sunny

Friday night dinner - From teh ravign about Pop last year, I'd go for that. When I mentioned B&C, it was for Monday breakfast. BW bakery is fine, though. 2006 was so cold that I was thinking an indoor venue might be nice. Maybe we do B&C if BW is rained out? The best news is that Scott and I have agreed to take an extra day off next year adn arrive early Friday, so that we can actually make Friday night dinner!!!!

Mel - Pop was awesome for the Friday night meet. They were more than accommodating and the menu choices were great. For Monday morning my family is up for any venue but I do like Cam's idea of POFQ food court for the reasons mentioned.
Sunny - Words fail me but I continue to keep you in my prayers:grouphug: . If you do run Burlington, my family will be your scream team with our WISH shirts on. Follow your heart while maintaining at least a little sense of sanity about it.
Krista - You ROCK girl!!:cool1: :woohoo:
Dave - Best of luck w/ the DD's and the delicate balance. I can totally relate to wanting to encourage but not push.
Craig - I will have to scan the thread to find your words of wisdom. They are always so timely and inspiring.
It is dumping snow on us today so my 16 mile LR Saturday will be on the TM:sad1: . After 14 last Saturday on the TM, I was hoping to get back out on the dry roads.
Happy training and racing to all this weekend. I am hoping once this episode of LTO combined with a touch of seasonal affective disorder passes I will be a more familiar face around here:thumbsup2 . The snow is really too much in MID-April...:confused3

Morning everyone,
I wish I had time to respond to everyone's posts individually but work is already pretty busy (its 7:30 am here....). Sunny, your post really touched a chord in me. I really hope that you are able to get everything under control. It must be so frustrating. :grouphug: to you.
I did 30 minutes of ab work last night. I made it home at a half decent time, but had a couple of chapters left to go on a book I was reading. I couldn't put it down, so I opted to just get in the ab work and skip the aerobics.
I did watch a great show on TV last night - Glutton for Punishment on the Food Network. The show is Canadian, so it may or may not be on the Food Network in the US. In this episode the host, Bob Blumer, travels to France to run the Medoc Marathon through Bordeaux country. I have to say this is definitely on my list of wishful races to run one year! Most people dress up in costumes to run, and essentially you run from one wine chateaux to another. There are 22 "aid stations" as you sample wine from the various wineries you are running through. Food on the course includes steak, sausages, oysters and much more. There is actually a 6.5 hour time limit, but when you finish (if you aren't too buzzed too finish) you get a medal, and an amazing bottle of wine with a special label on it to commemorate your finish. The prerace past dinner is like an all night party with more and more wine. Sounds like a tough race, but a fun one. The host, it seemed, only had 5 days to train he said, although he had run marathons before. He did finish, and tasted at every "aid station" along the way. BTW - the winner gets his weight in grand crus of wine....nice!
Happy Thursday everyone!!

Christa - Hooray for the certificate!
Judy - NOOOOO!!!!
Doctor's visit report: Had an ingrown toenail removed from the left big toe. It's currently propped up and hurts really bad, but that pain will subside in a couple of days. He did xrays and confirmed the PF diagnosis. He's making custom orthotics which will be ready in about 3 weeks. In the meantime, he said there's no reason not to keep running. He told me to stretch really good before I run (I usually only stretch after the run), but not to bother with the ice or Aleve at all. He looked at my shoes and said they were really good shoes, so they're not the problem. Hooray! Other than being broke right now (thank goodness insurance should cover 90% of today, less the deductible - this visit was scary expensive), all the news was good. And I read RW the whole time I was waiting just to stay motivated - mostly the article on why biking was the best XT, to respond to someone's earlier post!
Now I have to get some work done!

Carrie - You using a cane made me giggle. I would probably be doing the same. BTW, the snow is now melting... but it's still cold.
OK, I need to get back to work. Still interviewing and hitting dead ends for an assistant/receptionist. I hate hiring people. Also, but foot is sore today after my run yesterday, so I am resting and icing. I have a 5 miler on Saturday, but will choose not to run it if it will help my foot heal. I really want to run it tho... there is a party afterwards with food and music!!

Here comes another mega post from me! I need to be more diligent about posting on here, I read, just don't have time to post. I xt on Tuesday night--I did the elliptical for 30 minutes with the resistance set on 5 and then I lifted weights--leg press and the leg curls. My legs were beat after that! Last night turned into a rest night it was storming pretty bad when I got home, so running outside was out. I planned on doing 3 miles on TM later in the evening, that didn't happen. I have 4 tonight, looks like on the TM again as it's still raining. Everyone that's sick of snow, come to my house as we're getting the rain!
Sunny-- I am so sorry that you are going through this. I don't have any words of wisdom for you, just know that you can come on here and vent to us at any time. I'm praying for you.
Christa--YOU ROCK!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Definitely frame that bad boy and hang it in your office.
Carrie--I'd be on the floor right with you at PT. Have you seen the scars on my legs? I'm not the most coordinated person! I hope the PT works for you and you can be pain free again!
Vic--Thanks for the link! I'll definitely check that out.
Judy--
Bekkiz--:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: You should be impressed with yourself!! That's awesome!
Mel--:woohoo: :woohoo: for Kaley!! That's awesome! My thoughts on Pop Century--I loved it! We had plenty of room to spread and talk to each other, we didn't bother anyone else by being there, the menu choices were more than adequate--I liked it much better than Trails End. As far as Monday morning goes, I like the Boardwalk Bakery because it's in a pretty convenient location and people can come and go as they need to. Plus we can spread out and talk and not bother anyone else. Although, I must admit I like Vic's suggestion of Tonga Toast.
Jackie--:wizard: for your foot!!!! Hopefully you'll be back on the road soon. What is Mystic mixed with? Hines is SO cuddly and loving, he is always getting up in our laps and giving us kisses. Thankfully we trained him to kiss on the cheek, although he slips a mouth kiss in every once in a while. :scared:
Andrew--That sounds like some serious xt!!!!
Mike/Optimator--:lmao: You are too much!!! :lmao: :lmao:
Dave--25 days til the Pig!!!!! Did you sign up for The Daily Squeal? I think you are doing the right thing with the princess: 's, you want to keep running fun and not a chore they HAVE to do. Hopefully spring will finally come and they are motivated again.
Leana--No Targets in Canada??? That is SO sad!! We won't even speak about American Idol. :sad2:
Jen--:wizard: for finding the perfect assistant. :wizard: for your foot!!! Have you made an appointment with a podiatrist yet? Going back a couple days, my inserts didn't give me blisters, they just hurt my leg from pushing up to get the leg where it's supposed to be. I've bagged the inserts for now, but will give them another shot after the Pig when I'm not running such high mileage.
Claire--Good to see you again! Don't be such a stranger. That is a fabulous 10K time!!
I know there are people I've missed, but I'm getting ready to head to lunch--I'm starving!!!

We'll have to make some time to compare scrs next tiem we meet up. ;) I'm pretty sure I'd win, as those TM scars are still prety ugly and red. However, with our track records, maybe we should not try to run together at CDC. It could be dangerous. ;) ALthough I'd usually take snow over rain, this is a darn wet snow. Yuck.
Jen - Good for you on knowing to listen to the body. On emissed LR will not hurt adn can only help if you are injured.
Jackie - So glad that all your news was good. Hope your toe heals quickly!

:goodvibes for everybody that is hurting right now for one reason or another.
Well, I can now wear my "endurance athlete" shirt I got from Cafe Press (made up by someone here, I believe). That's right, I did 10 miles today! I bought the shirt a while back, but haven't worn it until I had actually did a 10 miler! :cool1:
As I was walking, my toenail really felt funny (I'm getting ready to "replace" each 2nd toenail on both feet) and it reminded me of the part in Ultra Marathon Man, when he told the podiatry student at the aid station that there was a clam shell in his shoe and instead it was his big toenail! (and the student asked to keep it!)
Speaking of which, I'm looking for some inspirational running/walking books, any recommendations? Has anyone read Sole Sisters or 26.2 Marathon Stories?
Monte- we didn't get snow until this morning, but it started in and hasn't stopped. They're calling for 1-2' for us.

Great news for Kaley, that must make you both feel so much better.

16 is really impressive. How you keep this up with the hurdles you've faced is a mystery to me. You're tougher than nails.
Sarah
Good luck on the treadmill. I must admit that when I was doing really long stuff on the TM last fall I actually looked forward to it. Something about being a real man and proving it by getting on it and beating the darn thing.
Jackie
Hopefully you have made that first step to defeating your PF. It can be done.
Mike
I also have to admit I love doing speed work on the track. Okay, I cannot do it at that speed anymore, but doing fast laps really makes you feel good about your fitness. And having young legs running with you helps.
Christa
Your comments about your youth apply to me as well. I'm sure if any of my elementary school teachers knew what I did for a living it would kill them. I couldn't control my energy and enthusiasm, and had my own personal chair in the principal's office as evidence. The crazy thing is they would punish me by not allowing me out for recess, which of course, really punished my teachers. A far better idea would have been to take me outside every hour and make me run a lap around the school grounds. Or two laps.
Leana
Years ago we were at the Adventurer's Club after the race and Pamelia Perkins asked all the runners about their medals and the race. She recommended a new Disney Marathon, where the participants would have to chug a drink at every mile point. This way, she told us, you wouldn't finish because you had too much to drink, instead of just getting tired.
Cold and rainy today, but given the forecast of snow last night and today, this is an improvement. I'm actually going to run 4.37 on our indoor track, and I promise to not hurt my legs. I have an early dinner on campus and can't get to the fitness center, clean up after, and get back. So it's off to that hard track, taking short and gentle strides.
Best to All

I have "hole" in the middle of my shin from running across a yard in high school in the dark and falling down in a drainage pipe. Yeah, that hurt pretty bad. :)

I still have scars from a college roller-blading incident.

OK! Here is an email about a swimming experience a friend had when she got in the pool to share a swimming lane.....
Oh, I didn't ask her! I started to get in and she "ran" over and started
yelling at me "NO! NO! You can't get in this lane! It's for water walkers
ONLY!"
I pointed that the sign at the end of the lane said "Lap Swimmers and Water
Walkers Only"
She continued yelling "NO! Victor" (whoever he is) "said that I don't have
to share this lane! This is for water walkers only!" The entire time she's
standing there with her arms out literally blocking my entrance into the
lane. Personally, I was rather amused because who in their right mind would
say to someone "I won't share with you, even though there are six of us in
the pool right now and only three lanes." Well, who over the age of about 3
1/2?
I asked the lifeguard, "Is this true? I can't swim in this lane?"
"Of course you can. You have to share." (she says to the 60+ year old woman,
whose mama didn't bring her up right...obviously)
"NO! You can't swim in this lane! It's in the regulations! You can't!"
I point out that if she doesn't want to be crowded, she can go into the
other ENTIRE HALF of the pool where water walkers and aerobics people
generally stay. She says "No, it's too crowded for what I do. I WATER JOG!"
she says, as if my pitiful little mile swim was just so beneath her serious
WATER JOGGING.
Amused I point to the other half and say "Um, Ma'am, there's no one in that
area right now. It's hardly too crowded."
She keeps on, by this time I'm done playing this game and say "Well,
whatever. I'm swimming. I'll take this half." She literally yells "NO! You
can't!" I leaned forward and said "You know what? You're not my mother, nor
are you the head of the YMCA, so you will not tell me what I can and cannot
do. I am going to swim now. I don't have time for this."
I get in and she "runs" ahead of me, arms out (seriously, like a 3 year old
trying to block my way). Fortunately they've yet to erect walls in the lanes
(LOL), so I just swim around her. SHE HITS ME as I swim past! I figured that
if I came back and she did it again I'd get out and go to the front and ask
her to be removed. She didn't and you know what? We managed to swim together
just fine!
What a piece of work! In a way I feel sorry for her. Obviously she's a
bitter old crab who is pretty used to bullying people to get her way (I've
seen her do it before, but I don't bully easily). After the swim I was in
the locker room getting changed. She sees me, stomps over to the entrance of
the locker bay I'm in, stands there BUCK NAKED and just GLARES at me. I
smile the biggest, sweetest smile I can and go back to changing. She stomps
off. A few minutes later she's dressed, she stomps back over and does the
same thing. I just smiled, chuckled, nodded my head in a "it takes all
kinds" fashion and walked past her. I think she was pretty upset that a) she
didn't get her way and b) she didn't make me mad enough to actually have a
complaint against me.
I thought about filing a complaint against her. After all, she did put her
hands on me while I was swimming in an effort to keep me out of her lane,
but I decided against it. I mean what if this is the only place she can
afford to swim? But if I have to share a lane again and she pulls it again,
I will file a formal complaint and request that she be disallowed in the
pool.
What a knob!

Carrie and Krista - I can join you with the scars, but I may have to take third place. But I do have some great stories of my clutzy-ness. Hey, in college I sprayed my dust rag with pledge and some pledge went on the wonderful industrial carpet... a short while later the phone rang and ran to get it....Whoooosh... I flew across the floor and knocked up my knee really bad.

gatorphipps That story is hilarious! It reminds me of all the crabby master's swimmers we used to have to share the pool with in college (I played water polo and we had morning swim practice.) Heaven forbid there was more than 2 people per lane! So my poor polo team had to squeeze 4 people per lane so we wouldn't tick off the old fogeies! :rotfl:

Today I went to a real running store and bought some ($$$$:rolleyes1 ) real running shoes. The guy was super helpful and really gave me some good advice. It turns out the shoes I had were about 1/2 size too small. The new ones are pretty cool and super prefect for my feet.
I put them right on and went on a 3 mile walk on a trail near the store. I held a 16:40 for the 3 miles. Pretty darn good :) I have to remember that this kind of improvement is easy at the begining, but pretty soon, I'll have to work a lot harder :rotfl:
Also! My Garmin 205 came in the mail today. I'm planning to do some interval training next week with it. Here's what I'm thinking, please let me know if this is a good idea or maybe other ways to do this?
Choose a particular distance, maybe 3 or 4 miles to start and go 1/2 a mile at a quick pace (like for me right now, 7 minutes for a 1/2 mile) and then a 1/2 mile at a more relaxed pace (like 9 minutes for a 1/2 mile) and repeat for the full distance.
I was a swim coach and so, I base a lot of my ideas on workouts for swimmers. I have no idea how this translates to the walking/jogging world. Thoughts?

Martha - So you like the Jack Sparrow image? I just HAD to come up with something...
Remember, Vic and I are the same age. He's the Fabio of the group, I'm just trying to keep up with his example.
Bekkiz - I wish I could run more with my dog, but my scar story involves her. She stopped to sniff another dog, I didn't stop in time, ugly tangle of dogs, leash, runner, runner (me) ends up on pavement in faceplant. I love walking with her, but have to forget going for time.
I think I'll concentrate on stretches this weekend - tracing the alphabet, curling my toes, stuff like that, while I wait for the big toe to heal enough to put shoes on. Maybe I'll even re-introduce the arms to the weights! Monday will be my target date for a return to normal workouts, either bike or TM. (Now that I've put it in writing, I have to do it - right?)

Hmmm...let's see if I can win Scar Wars ;)
My belly button has a smile since I had my tubes tied after Lenna was born.
There's still a few acid scars on my arms from when I was a chemist.
Left elbow has a nasty one from a bike accident as a kid.
Bottom of my left foot, stepped on a broken Coke bottle (barefoot) when I was 11 and severed the tendon to my big toe. I was in a splint on crutches for 3 weeks and missed the big 6th grade camping trip to the Everglades.
I have implants...dental implants :teeth: ...because I knocked my front teeth out in a skateboarding incident when I was 9.
And my personal favorite which I think some of you saw near the end of the half...scar on my tongue...bit nearly through it when I was 7 (tripped while running down the hallway and hit my chin on the footboard of my bed).
Isn't this something we're supposed to do when we're 80?

Hello Everyone!!
I'm sad to say that I have not been able to keep up with everyone this week. I did catch that TXAng is doing first 5K this weekend and did I read something about nerves??
GIRL - I know a lot of people would shoot me for this, but nerves can be a good thing if you use them a right way!! I get nervous before everything, but one thing that has taught me , is that is the way my body "pumps it self up" if that makes ANY SENSE!! Before our second 1/2 I was so nervous, I wanted to leave. Everyone looked so SERIOUS!!! - not like Disney, I was so nervous and we did great, best race ever!!!
All I can say is , USE IT, feed off of it,and love every second of it , there is nothing like a "first time" for anything -- it's so special!!
GOOD LUCK!!!!
SO I HAVE A QUESTION FOR ANYONE WHO HAS AN ANSWER:
I am wondering what everyone's opinion/experiences with chiropractor's???
After a few months of some pretty bad back pain (I was in denial, and stubborn) I finally ended up at the Chiropractor today. I definately have some things wrong there, and the pain is gettng progressively worse, but I am a major chiropractor sceptic. But I saw the x-rays and he has some valid points. So I am just asking for any advice and experiences, GOOD OR BAD!!
Thank you and I hope everyone's training is going well.

Hi everyone, got my 3 mile run in this evening. I ran around the neighborhood in 32:56 for a 10:59/mi pace. Finally the weather cleared up and it was sunny and warm enough for a skirt! I also felt as though my pacing was a lot more consistent. I'm really tackling those hills along the route now!
I think I can partially attribute my good run to a really frustrating day at work. I love the group of people I work with, like my boss, enjoy the projects I am working on. Problem is my "teammate." She's frustrated and approached the higher ups (my boss's boss's boss) about making a major change to who she and I report to. She didn't ask me what I thought - sheesh, this is my job, my career too, right? Unfortunately we are a team so we would both have to move together. But a line has been drawn in the sand. She who wants to move, I who want to stay. Some teamwork, eh?

Well, our first 5K is THIS WEEKEND! :scared1: Is it a bad sign that I'm already nervous? What if I make a wrong turn somewhere? What if it takes me 7 hours to finish? What if I trip and fall down? Oy.
TXAng - If you make a wrong turn, then turn around and get back on track, like I did on my half 2 weeks ago. You won't take 7 hours to finish even if you have to crawl. If you fall down, then get up and keep going (I have yet to see anyone fall down at a race, but I am sure it happens).
In the last 2 months, I have run my first 5K, 10K, and Half-Marathon, so I understand your nerves, but you will be fine. Just run like you do in practice and I bet your adrenaline will carry you faster than you expect.
Good luck!

Angie - I was a big chiropractic skeptic, too. A few years ago I was having pain in my shoulder and bicep area. I played volleyball and the only time it hurt was when I spiked the ball. Nothing else made it hurt. And it usually hurt the whole next day, too. This went on for awhile. I even took off a season to let it heal, but the next time I tried to spike, the pain was there. My primary doc sent me to the chiro. I went 3x week for a month. She cracked my back, did electric stim on shoulder, had me do exercises and ice. To this day I have not had the problem again.:)
Sunny - sorry you're having the pain again. Sending :grouphug: your way!
Judy - Oh no! I hope it's not a stress fracture. I'll keep good thoughts for you. But don't give up! :wizard:
Carrie - hope your leg/hip is feeling better!
A girl who works for me is heading to Boston for the Marathon. I hope it doesn't snow. She is so petite and has no meat on her. She'll freeze!

Decisions, decisions...
Well first off I hit the pool today for those 84 crossings of 25 yards... Even added another 12 to make it 2112 even, or the distance of the Half Ironman swim leg. Finished in 1:00:40 or so, well under the 1:20 cutoff that will be in place. Don't feel too trashed at the moment, although immediately upon exiting the pool I wasn't all about hopping on a bike for 56 miles I'll tell ya... Still got another 5 weeks or so to train up to that point so we'll see how it goes.
As for this weekend I'm now waffling as to whether to stick to my original Powerman Alabama (5mi run/33mi bike/5mi run) duathlon up in Birmingham, or go with my wife down towards the Orlando area where she is a Godmother for a baptism and then take her car and continue to Clermont and try one of the tri distances they have going there this weekend either the short (.6mi swim/18.6 bike/4.7 run) or the long (1.2 swim/37.4 bike/9.4 run).
The long is probably a bit much, and just loops the same bike and run course twice which is pretty boring, as well as matching the Half Iron distance swim which I'm probably not ready for yet. The short though seems the opposite, a bit short.
So many ways to drain my body, so little time! Anyone going to be down in Clermont at one of those races? Or ditto for Birmingham? Both are on Sunday and take registration up through Sat so I'll have to figure it out by then I guess...

Can I be part of the "scar wars?" :yoda: :darth: :chewy: :rotfl2:
Mine are all surgeries though.
- 1 huge scar along / under shoulder blade (t.e. fistula repair at birth)
- 4 on left foot & ankle - tendon removed
- 4 on left arm & hand - tendon put into hand
- c-section
- 4 from gall bladder removal
- several very small ones from mole removals
- I do have a small scar on my knee from a bike mishap in 5th grade.
Angie - I don't really have any advice about chiropractors. The one thing I would strongly suggest is being checked out by your primary physician first. I knew a woman years ago who had back pain and only saw a chiropractor for a very long time for her symptoms. Turned out she had cancer. The cancer could be seen on her old x-rays, the chiropractor missed it. She died a couple weeks after finally going back to her primary. :sad2:
Unfortunately I have no training to report. :rolleyes1
But, my taxes are done, finally! :cool1:
I will get in a workout today, either wogging or xt.
I will have plenty of xt tomorrow since I am watching 2 of my nieces all weekend!

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:
Whew, what a long week at work. Yesterday I was up at 5am working, and was in the lab until 7pm. I did manage to go down to the gym and run 2 miles on the TM. I did it around 4pm to wake me up for the rest of what I had to do. Nothing spectacular 2 miles at 9:31 mpm pace - I was going to do 3 miles, but I felt absolutely exhausted.
Today I have a half day - :cool1:, and we're heading down to Keuka Lake (1 hour south of us). I booked a night at a hotel with a pool and we're just going to have a getaway. Tomorrow I'm going to run a very hilly 14 mile loop around the lake. It will be great to get a change of scenery.

Hey guys! Just wanted to pop to to say Hi to all my teammates. It's been a crazy busy week at work (to coin Judy and Sunny--it's been a WTO week :) ). It will probably be this way for the next two weeks, although I am still getting a chance to keep up with the thread on a semi-consistent basis. Just not enough time to do a real post. I have managed to keep up with training (at the expense of being at Krista's beckon call for most evenings--sorry, honey ;) ) . Got some bikes and swims in along with my runs this week.
Hope everyone had a good week and hopefully we'll be getting some warmer weather soon. Looks like the forecast for Boston on Monday is less than stellar for a marathon (rain and strong winds--yikes!).
Dave--good luck on the 14 miler, and hope you enjoy your weekend away. Only 23 days till showtime!! :thumbsup2
Have a great weekend, guys! I promise I'll try to catch up with everyone tomorrow.

Good morning everyone!
Not much to report. 3 miles last night at a 11:18 pace. Tonight it will be 8 - 10 rounds on the heavybag.
Take care.

Morning everyone! TGIF!
Yesterday did 4 miles on TM. My 5K time was 31:31. I felt pretty good. I slowed down for the last 0.9 mile. Did a little ST. Today is a quickie 2 miles and tomorrow 7 miles. We've got guests coming tomorrow so I"ve got to get up early to finish my run.
GoofyMike- At first I was horrified by your post. I thought 3 kids had killed some guy while you were at the track!:scared1: Then I realized that you just couldn't keep up!;)
Christa- I don't have a bike any more. I'm going to have to add that to my wish list for XT. I'll hit the new ones at the Y. They have little video screens on them. I'm also considering a belly dancing class. That should work those core muscles!
Cam- I wanted that Goofy frame in 2006 but couldn't afford it after the other trip related costs. :sad2:
Sunny- I have a friend who has more severe scoliosis than it sounds like you have. She has a lot of pain when running, too.
Judy-Hope your foot is OK
Jackie- Have a relaxing weekend
Carrie- Is a gait analyzer a person or a machine?
Leana- No Target?:sad1: I'm going there today and will buy something in your honor.
Stacey- Endurance Athlete- You've been there and got the t-shirt!:yay:
Christa- :lmao: That swim story is sooo funny! I can't believe she hit your friend!
Jen- Here's hoping your position is filled!:wizard:
bekkiz- Those new running shoes do feel great don't they?
Mel- A smiley belly button? :) I was the one smiling after I had my tubes tied!:yay:
TXANG- Good luck on that 5K and like Angie said use your nervous energy to power your run. Imagine you're a thoroughbred chomping at the bit to run!
Matt- Glad you don't have to worry about the swimming cut off any more! Enjoy choosing from your energy draining options!
Kristi- Yea! on finishing your taxes. I just found out we have a local tax here that I haven't done. I'm running up to the tax office before I go to Target to see how much I can spend in Leana's honor. I hope they don't take too much.
Since my guests are arriving tomorrow I'll probably not be back on until next week. Have a great weekend!

Good morning!!!! Happy Friday!!! This is going to be a quick post, I have a meeting at 9:00, but I'll be back later. Last night I ran 4 miles on the treadmill in 43:26. I don't have my exact splits but I can make a pretty good guess--mile 1 10:50 (I had the wrong mph set for the first 3 minutes, so it was a little slower) mile 2 and 3 probably 10:40ish and mile 4 was really close to 10:00. Don't add up my mileage as I didn't and I don't want to feel stupid! :) I did have an epiphany moment at mile 2, but you guys are going to think I am an idiot! As I was running, I got to thinking about how my ankles slip around in my shoes and I thought "hmm, I wonder if lace my shoes all the way up and 'lock my laces', if that will help my ankles from slipping?" Duh!!! How long have I been running? I stopped, locked my laces and my ankles felt more stable in my running shoes.
Mel and Kristi--WOW!!! Those are some serious scars!!! None of my scars are surgery related, just my own clumsiness.
TXAng--I get nervous before every race too!!! Even 5K's, which I have done countless 5K's plus how many times have I run 3 miles in my life? Yet, I still get nervous!! I'm going to agree with Angie--use that nervousness for energy!!!! And don't pay attention to anyone around you; don't compare yourself to any other runner or walker. This is YOUR race!! You are so going to rock!!!! :cheer2:
Angie--I haven't been to a chiropractor, but my Mom swears by hers and tries to get me to make an appointment to go. Not only does her chiro work on her back, but also he works with her legs and ankles (my Mom and I are built just alike and both of our ankles roll). In fact, her chiro actually fitted her for custom orthodics that she runs in.
Dave--Have a wonderful weekend!!! Enjoy your 14 miler. :)
Leana--Good luck with your co-worker! Excellent 3 miler last night!
Okay, I missed people, but I'll be back!

Kiena - It's a videao analyzer, but there is a specially trained PT who runs the test. SO, kind of both.
Scar Wars - :rotfl: I was sticking to my legs. 2 scar in mouth. One from falling a a whiskey barrel flower pot when I was 6 (lots of pretty colors it turned) and one from surgery to remove a root. I think my fave is the one on my wrist. Was crawling on teh floor checking x-mas lights adn somehow managed to fall and gouge my wrist with my own thumb nail. WHo on eathe can fall while crawling????
OK, must get back to work.
Did 50 minutes last night. Weather stunk! Krista I know rain stinks, but honestly, I wished fro teh rain to come back after it turned ot small daggars of ice. Ouch! Once my back was to teh wind, it was ok. Although I was tryign to take it easy, speed wasn't an option anyway. The pain was MUCH better, though. No pain again today. Looks liek a good sign ofr my 10-miler tomorrow. Plus, it should be dry and warmer. (Upper 40s, woo hoo.)
Where's solo?????

Thanks everyone for the hugs and PD.
So far I haven't had any miraculous pain relief but it can take a couple of days to fully kick in.
Sara-- thank you so much for offering your family as my scream team. I will be alone if I go, so would be so great!
Vic, et all: Do you know the ins and outs of going to the Nascar Sylvania 300 in NH? Things like, how fast does it sell out, what type of tickets are good, decent, cheap? I'm thinking about doing a family trip this year since we're officially (albeit) ignorant Nascar fans. TIA
Mel-- all I can say is "I like big teeth and I cannot lie...":rotfl2: Sorry I couldn't resist, the word "implant" just conjurs up so many images!
I have no scars, never broken or sprained anything. Never actually suffered a running or weight-lifting injuring in my life... And here I am now! In fact, I've had people marvel at my multi-tasking skills while on the TM. I can unravel knotted headphone wires, drink and gel, adjust clothing, you name it, without every slowing to a walk!
I'm glad Chad and Colleen's DH are not running Boston this year. MEMA (that's FEMA for Mass.) are going to all sorts of extra efforts to try to make the course safe. Not only is it supposed to rain/snow but they are talking hurrican force winds on top of that! Unless they are tail winds, I doubt there will be a course record set this year!
I'm actually registered for the annual Patriot's Day 5 miler in LExington on Monday. I supposed that would be silly to try even if it wasn't raining/snowing/blowing.... We'll see.

OK, well, good news/bad news.... :)
The good news is...I "only" have Sinus Tarsi Syndrome. Nothing is broken or fractured.
Yea, I never heard of it either.... :confused3
What is the Sinus Tarsi Syndrome?
Definition: Clinical disorder characterized by specific symptoms and signs localized to the sinus tarsi (known as the “eye of the foot”), which refers to an opening on the outside of the foot between the ankle and heel bone.
Etiology: Cause can be due to an inversion (rolling out) ankle sprain (70-80% of the time) or can be due to a “pinching” or impingement of the soft tissues in the sinus tarsi due to a very pronated (rolling in) foot (20-30% of the time).
Clinical Presentation: Patients present with localize pain to the sinus tarsi region with a feeling of instability and aggravation by weight bearing activity. These patients do poorly on uneven surfaces, i.e., grass and gravel. Physical examination reveals pain to palpation of the sinus tarsi with aggravation on foot inversion (turning in) or eversion (turning out). Looseness and instability of the ankle and foot joints may be present as well.
The bad news is...and I knew this was coming...I need orthodics in my running shoes. Grrrrrr. :headache: But I did know it. I can see how my left foot falls unevenly.
Well, I got a Cortisone cocktail and now nothing hurts! YAY! I don't know about my 9 miles for tomorrow. I'm thinking about it...
OK I MUST finish some reports due by EOD today. I'll be back later.
Unless, I'm hovering around the ToT13K page, waiting to register..... :rolleyes1

Wow, so much to catch up on!
Judy: hope it's not a true stress fracture and you feel better soon.
Christa: love the story about your friend's experience at the Y.....some of those old ladies get so territorial about community space, you just can't believe it.
Nancy: 14 miles on the treadmill is a major accomplishment! There is no way I could ever do that. I get so bored after just an hour. I hope your hip is feeling better. It is probably due to what someone said about trying to maintain your balance for so long. I'm usually fine during my LWs but hurt an hour or two after. I find that taking a cold shower and an Alleve right after really help. Can't believe our "event" is only 2 weeks away! which reminds me.....
Question for all you seasoned athletes: If our half marathon is just about 2 weeks away, when do we stop training hardcore? My daughter was a swimmer and she always had to taper before a big meet. Do marathon walkers do the same? I plan to do a 12 mile walk tomorrow......do I need to do it next weekend also or should I just do several of the shorter walks? Any advice would be appreciated.
I think the Tower of terror event will be fun and my husband said he would even consider doing it with me. I just need to make sure there is nothing else going on so we can get the time off.

04-13-2007, 11:23 AM
Jeanne--Definitely taper!!!!! I would do my 12 miles tomorrow and then 6 next weekend and then the half marathon. That's actually the taper I am doing for the Flying Pig 1/2 marathon. What were you planning to do during the week? Next week I would do like 5, 4, 3 or 4, 4, 3 and then 6 miles next Saturday and the week of your race I would do 3, 2, 2 and then the half. Also, for me, I make my last run at least 2 days before the event, so if the half is on Saturday, then I run Thursday and don't run again. Different people do different things, but that's what works for me. Also, if you do any weight lifting, don't during your taper. Hope this helps!

Check your PM. :)
Thanks, Vic
I got to try out my savvy new NASCAR knowledge in the privacy of a PM rather than sound like a bumbling idiot amongst the seasoned fans here on the thread:lmao:
Judy-- I think we're running neck and neck for injury posts:hug: I'm sorry you have this bizarre thing that had never heard of before, but at least it sounds like there is a pretty good fix for it. As a fellow recent cortisone cocktail recipient, I both want to caution you from pushing too hard with the new 'pain free' fix, but also soooooo share your desire to get out there. I'm supposed to be easing back into my routine.
Yesterday I waited exactly 24 hours (as the post-op sheet said not to do anything for 24 hours) then I did an 8 miler on my TM, slow and between 2-5% grade. The doctor explained to me (as did the orthosurgeon) that running causes a nature forward pitch that relieves the compression of the nerves caused by stenosis. He said that is why I can run without pain but not walk around a store or stand. So now I'm wondering if the horrible pain I had on my 16 miler last weekend was due to the walking I encorporated once I hit the street (first 10 was on TM). But he also "asked" me to try to substitue low/no impact workouts as much as possible. I didn't tell him I'm training for a marathon.
Looks like my coffee breaks are out for LRs, unless I can learn to drink hot coffee while running. I've already bragged about my multi-tasking talents on TM, so maybe I need to add "sipping hot coffee at or below a 13:00 pace":rotfl2: You haven't lived until you've had a coffee at or near the end of an LR!
Jeanne-- Tapering is an absolute must. It is as important as the gruelling training you did. Helen, our New Zealand rep explained it to me like this: "your body has grown accustomed to the daily grind and will miss it terribly (hence taper madness), come race day your legs are fresh and strong and rearing to go". OK, I really messed up her version, but I'm a bear of very little brain and even less memory.;)
Speaking of Helen, Helen where are you? Are you lurking? I know last time you posted (that I noticed) you were dealing with pain and some depression. Please, please, please post or PM. I know how dark that spiral can get.
Speaking of spiralling. I was in quite the tail-spin the night of the injection and received a PM from someone I haven't met on the board before. That caused me to respond, then check the threads and then perk up. I can never say it enough, you are the best friends I think I've ever had:cloud9: OK, I'm getting too mushy, time to blame it on the Neurontin:rotfl:
Oh, and I do hope you notice something new about my siggie....
I really think I'll do this one solo so I can spend as much time as possible with the WISH team!
(I may be sporting that new MIT invented built for speed walker:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: and no I will not take on any hitch-hikers)

Real Quick post! FYI!
I saw this on the Race website for the 1/2 I am running with sis tomorrow. I don't know if this will be in place for all races (including WDW) or maybe just this one next year, but this is from the USATF. I don't run with headphones so this really doesn't bother me, but is will bother others.
USA Track and Field adopts new rule pertaining to the use of music headphones in races.
USA Track & Field (USATF) recently adopted a new rule banning the use of headphones and other music devices at all USATF-sanctioned running events. USATF, the governing body for long-distance running and track & field in the United States, adopted the rule (#144.3b) in an effort to increase runner safety.
While we have no way of policing it this year, please note that in the future, any USATF sanctioned race (which is most of them) will begin enforcing this rule.

Christa, I just read an article about this on Complete Running.
http://completerunning.com/archives/2007/04/09/listen-up-all-you-headphone-users/
Some races will be asking violators to surrender their mp3 players and they will be mailed back to them. For those that won't surrender they will be disqualified.
It even goes so far to limit video or audio casette recorders. Now I sure hope that doesn't expand to include cameras for snapping pics along the route..?

SUNNY - YAH YAH YAH on the Marathon! I still leaning towards the Full, so maybe we can run together. I am aiming at a 12-13 minute mile or maybe slower if I am dying.
Christa - I saw that yesterday. I was hoping to use my MP3 player on my 1/2 next month because I am running alone. Looks like I won't be able to. I didn't need mine at Disney because of all the action and the people, so I won't miss it there.
Judy - Looks like you can join the ranks of Custom Orthotics. I am still test driving my over the counters, but even if these work, I still think I will go custom after my 1/2 next month.
OK, nothing to report from me. I am resting again today to make sure my foot is OK for tomorrow's race. 5-Miler in the cold, but looks like NO SNOW! I am so excited about that. I am pulling out the WISH wear and will wear it with pride! Oh and I am coming down with a cold, so this could pose a problem at my race!

Another quick break in between naps. Timmy is finally getting into a nice routine. He actually slept for 5 hours last night, although Lynnda and I had to wake up to see if he was alright or not. So much for enjoying the long sleeping time. :lmao:
I did sneak out again last night and did 4.25 miles with a 10:16 pace. I think the pace dropped a little because I had to wait a while for traffic to let up so I could cross a street. I guess next time I will have to pause the Garmin while I wait.
Lynnda is doing good and is getting a huge case of cabin fever. Unfortuenately she can't drive until next Saturday per doctors orders. It will be her birthday so I guess that is a pretty good present. I may not see her all day at this rate. :rotfl:
Sunny - Glad to see you are doing the marathon. Pixiedust to all your treatments and that they work this time.
Judy - Glad to hear that you don't have a stress fracture. I was also wondering if you were kicking Charlie or yourself too much. ;)
Mel - Glad to hear the report for Kaley is good. We enjoyed going to Pop as well last year. There was definately more things to keep Billy preoccupied with.
Vic - Glad to hear the training is still going well.
Matt - Good luck with your decision. I would think at this point you could probably do the half without any problems, as long as you keep training. Granted you might not set any course records but you could definately finish.
I'll apologize to all those I missed but I think I am being beckoned for again. It is amazing how much a small body can fit in their stomach and how often they want it to be full. :rolleyes1

Sunny - Thank you for your kind thoughts. It just may be that, of the two of us, I am the bigger whiner. :rolleyes2 What I have is nothing compared to some of the things you've been dealing with. I just complain a lot more than you. Yes, I hear you about the shots. I got a lot of them before I had my foot surgery three years ago. My ankle/foot is now sore from the shot, but doesn't HURT like before. I'll baby it for a while. Oh I am SOO HAPPY you're coming in January. :yay: And YAY that I'll get to see you for more than 30 seconds! :woohoo:
Jeanne - Just a warning about taping......it causes you to do crazy things, FOR REAL! :crazy2: Maybe you should hand over your credit cards to someone you trust. You'll find yourself itching to do something, anything! You'll climb the walls. You'll become crabby. You'll be impossible to live with!!! Oh wait...that was me. :upsidedow
Jen - That's what the podiatrist told me to do - get some firm OTC inserts for starters. Guess I'll do that tonight. I don't know...somehow it feels like I'm violating my Kayanos....:cloud9:
Bill - You're "daddy posts" are funny! :lmao: Good thing you can multitask! Ohh, I would never ever kick my husband. Remember, he is the one that gave me Mist for Christmas. Plus, ummm, he always pays for the Disney trips....I kick MYSELF for not having met him 20 years ago!

REALLY STUPID QUESTION: are headphones and earbuds the same thing? I was planning to use my ipod which has earbuds and allows me to hear most outside noise. It will be the last nice day as a Northeastern is coming. What time will you be arriving on Sat? I can't believe it is only 2 weeks away, scary. :scared1:
Judy that is so funny. I think my body will just be thanking me for not punishing it for 2 weeks.

Hey All!
Just a quick post:
Sunny and Carrie - Maybe you two could get into 3-legged races. I'm just having trouble figuring out if it would be better to have your "longer" legs tied together in the middle or seperate on the outside. On second thought, either way it seems there would be a lot of spinning and not touching the ground! :rotfl2:
Jen - Dusting with Pledge in college !?! Next thing you'll tell us that you did laundry too!!
Bill - By kid number 3 you'll learn NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY!!!
Judy - Nice job on finding an injury no one has ever heard of :thumbsup2 . Bonus points!
This week was a really good week for me. Training wise, the weather was pretty much ideal for running: cool, slightly breezy, dry. I had some pretty quick times on a few runs and did my 20 mile LR today at a 8.13 mpm pace.
Even better than that, DW and I were shopping/sight seeing at a Whole Foods store yesterday. They had Optimator beer just like at the Biergarten in Germany. :woohoo:
Even better than that, the clerk carded me when I was paying!! Hello!! I'm double the legal age, but thank you very much. :cool1:

OK, in that case you can sing to me along the way!
We actually arrive late Friday night. We're not renting a car since Jen will pick us up in Philly. We booked a room with 2 double beds in case she wants to stay with us, but she says she would rather stay in her own apt with all her stuff. We are pretty much free all day Saturday. bekkiz: it sounds to me like you are running speed work. I do my speed work by time. So I choose a total time, like last Tuesday I wanted to run 40 minutes total. Then I run 2 min slow, 2 min fast. If I'm on a treadmill I can control the speed. If outside, I just run fast. So your tactic sounds pretty good to me.
Jackie: I always think of Calcio as dark and mysterious!! ;)
Mel: I feel like in the movie "Jaws" where the boat captain and Richard Dreyfus's characters are comparing scars and Roy Scheider looks at his measly little appendix scar....um, I got a sting ray scar! :rotfl:
Leana: nice job on the hill work!!
Terri: depending on who you listen to, we could get rain or snow on Sunday but Monday looks like just rain. I wish your friend well in the race!!
Matt: you constantly amaze me! And you have such a tolerant wife...she deserves a medal...:rolleyes1
Dave: have a wonderful get-away weekend!
Kiena: have fun with your guests this weekend.
Sunny: brace for the worst and have fun at the 5 miler!!
Judy: can I assume that you had that cortisone shot straight into your heal? YOWSER!!!!! I opted not on that one. I have orthodics. It did take a few weeks to get used to them so that I didn't hurt. But I wouldn't have anyting else now.
FungLu: welcome and happy to hear things are getting easier
Bill: happy to hear things are on schedule even tho you both are waking up to make sure Timmy is OK...:rotfl: I do remember those days....
After working out with my PT yesterday, today was a light cardio day. Tomorrow morning, early, I will run 9.3 miles or maybe a tic more. The really rough weather is to set in on Sunday and I want to make sure I get everything done before that.
DD is doing very well after the toe surgery. I take her to the doc on Tuesday. She has hit the pin in her toe several times which to me sounds horrendous but she says just feels weird.
Well, I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!! If you are doing your taxes, gee, have LOTS of fun. It's amazing how much I have to give up for the "privilege" of living in this state!

Hi! :wave2:
I'm a long-time lurker :tiptoe: , new poster to the boards. I've been running off and on for the last ten years, but have only been running regularly for the last couple years.
I'm 28, a Northeast US to Miami transplant, and am taking advantage of my proximity to Disney to do a bunch of Disney races (see siggie)
I'm signed up for my second Minnie and thought I'd finally say hi to you guys.
I'm doing the Minnie with a friend (first time ever not doing a race by myself) and we're staying at Pop. This is the first race that I've decided to do for fun and not for time, not that I'm that fast (10 min/mile on a good day).
Is anyone "dressing up" for the race, besides WISH gear? This year I'm feeling festive...
Have a great day!

Hi,
I am new to the thread and on the 2008 Walt Disney Marathon website, they list the following under "Race Information"--For everyone's safety, baby joggers/strollers, bicycles, inline skates, skateboards, headphones, and animals will be prohibited on the course.
I wonder how well this will be enforced. I am normally not a rule breaker, but I love to run with my ipod!

I set my Tivo to tape this because you mentioned it! It was very interesting. I do find it hard to believe he "trained" for it in 5 days, but it was fun watching all the wine tastings & costumes. Looks like a fun race. Thanks for the heads up!

Good morning everyone!
Yardwork today, before the rain comes. I guess that almost counts as XT. Doesn't it? :confused3
Bill - Great pace. Glad to hear Timmy is behaving, and sleeping. :)
Judy - I saw that post on the ToT thread. You're mean! :lmao: Take care of that foot.
Sunny - Take care. :)
Martha - Goood luck with your run today.
Mike(Optimator) - Great job with the LR!
FungLu, CrazySecretRecipe, ChiFiveO - :welcome:
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Jennifer and ChiFiveO:welcome: this is a great group and you'll love it. ChiFiveO, your question regarding headphones--well, with 25000 people running the marathon and/or 1/2 marathon, it might be hard for them to enforce it. Have you run any of Disney's races? Reason I ask is that the first year I ran the 1/2 marathon, I had the iPod and didn't need it. There was so much activity and distractions, it never used it. Plus I had my DH with me and he was my annoying, talking, animal sidekick which really helped :lmao: !! However, I ran the 1/2 marathon alone the next year, and they changed the course and I could have used it. I've learned that during races I really don't need it.
I do hope they DO enforce the no baby joggers, animals, etc. I ran a 10K in Boston a couple Octobers ago and they supposedly banned the baby joggers but people still ran with them and I got run of the course a couple times by them. I was none-to-happy about it, I can tell you!!
As soon as I wake up I'm off for my LR. 9.5 miles today. I'm running on Babson's fields and I have to be done before 11:00 today. There are a number of games being played today and I don't want to be in the way. Plus I have enough to do, life-wise that it's better to run early today.
To anyone running on Monday--pay attention to the weather reports. It's supposed to be nasty here starting tomorrow (hence the run today!). PD to you all and let us know how it goes.

I RAN TODAY!
Not a lot, just 2.5 miles in a leisurely 35 minutes on the TM, but I did run. And nothing really hurt, not even the big toe that's still recovering.
Kevin/Solo - I ran while watching last week's Brothers & Sisters (yeah, I'm slow catching up on the shows, but the DVR allows me that luxury!)
Vic - I'm going out to XT - have to mow the yard now. I definitely think it counts as XT.
Have a great weekend! And for those of you expecting awful weather, stay warm and dry if you can!

Jennifer and ChiFiveO- Welcome to the group!
Martha- I see you were able to break the prohibition against running with animals!:rotfl: Now, I'm thinking about how to push one of my cats in my baby stroller while wearing Roller Blades and listening to my ipod on headphones...
Did a 7 mile LR this morning. Per the RW training program I downloaded last night I was supposed to keep it at an 11:12 pace. I had one mile above that but the rest were all between 10:56 and 11:06.:sad2: I'm apparently not very coachable. Has anyone else used the programs from Runners' World online?
I hope everyone is safe and dry from the impending lousy weather. Our friends can't make it from CT because they're worried about getting home on Monday.:sad1:
So, I've got a freed up weekend that I didn't want. Have a great Saturday.

Can I stop by and say hello? I brought cookies.
I just heard on the news that this years Boston marathon will have the worst weather ever.
Does anyone have good weather stories to share? I was running out in the desert once when I was stationed in Las Vegas and got caught in a sand storm. It only lasted a few minutes but I was bright red from the "sanding" I had just taken.

When we first started running we "ROUGHLY" used the plan from Runner's World strictly as a guide, more for distances to run each day and how to spread it out. I am of the firm belief that if you want to challenge yourself and can run a little fast than the "called for pace" -- go for it. That is where the accomplishments and breakthroughs come in. That's just my Two Cents !! for what it's worth.:confused3

Hello everyone, I wanted to introduce myself quickly- I don't know if anyone will see this since a new thread will soon be started, but here goes.
I started my running journey on December 17. Today, April 14, I ran my first ever 5K- the longest I have gone so far. It wasn't a race- I just mapped out a course with a few hills near my house, and went for it! I have tracking my progress on the journal board, but I wanted to make it more "official" and join the WISH racing team! Here is a link to my journal- Lisa's Journal (http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1303352)
I completed my first ever race on March 25th- a 2 miler. I came in 3rd in my age (there were only 5 of us, and 1 didn't finish, but hey- I got some bling out of it ;) ) . My next race is coming up on May 4th, but I am hoping to maybe add a race before the end of the month if possible- I will have to see what is going on.

FirstTimertoDiz That is SO awesome! Congrats for your 5K and all of your runs to come :) Keep us all posted w/ your progress and races. I'm planning my first "race" on June 10th (a 5k, although I'm more of a walk/jogger) and I'm super excited but really nervous.
It's so nice to be a part of the WISH race team :lmao:

Hey everybody!! It is really hard to keep up with this thread! So today I did my LR/W of 7 miles!! That is the farthest and longest I have ever done!! I decided to do it on the treadmill because my 4 miles yesterday was tough because of the wind. My time was only ok. Do you find that you go faster outside? I definately do.
I have a problem I am hoping some of you can help me with. My right leg where it meets my body (what is that area called?) is extremely sore. It started getting bad during mile 2 today. Anybody have any experience with this pain and any suggestions as to what I should do? Ice? Heat? Both?
Thanks for any help!

GOOD JOB BECKY ON LONGEST EVER!!
Are you talking about where your leg meets your body on the front, back, or side?? Or maybe like in the hip area. If it's on the front/hip area you might want to do some really good hip flexor stretches, if I don't do them regularly, it kills me.:scared1: No matter what side it is on definately good stretching is going to help!!

Memo to me: never run the upper fields at Babson again. Repeat: NEVER RUN THE UPPER FIELDS AT BABSON AGAIN!!! They are dirt and grass and as such so choppy that I had to chop my steps to go over or around bumps, divits, remnants of riverlets, tree roots, fallen branches and rocks. My legs are so beat up right now! They hurt, big time. I've taken the ibuprofen etc but they just plain hurt.
That said, I did run 9.5 miles in 100:50 for about a 10:35 pace. The first 3 miles were 10:40 pace. I was disappointed so stopped looking at my watch. I obviously sped up but I don't know when. DH (Calcio) said it was too fast for that distance on the fields. But once I get a pace going, I cannot speed up or slow down for anything. Well, 3 weeks to the Minnie race and I ran further than the distance. At least I know I can do it.
Jackie: WAY TO GO!!! and no pain! Awesome!
Kiena: hope you find a way to fill your free weekend! The rollerblades in your scenario would keep you well in front of me, though. But I'd love to see your cat in the stroller! I have this picture of Morris the cat with a baby bonnet on...
Dave: :welcome: and thanks for the cookies!!
Lisa: :welcome: and congrats on the first ever 5K!!
Becky: :thumbsup2 on your 7 miles!! Woo-hoo! Thanks for sharing it with us.
For anyone running the Boston marathon on Monday--or any other race this weekend--very much good luck!! I'll be sending happy thoughts your way. Let us know how you do.
Good luck to everyone training this weekend, too! Be safe.

Thanks Angie! The pain is in the front, not as high as my hip bone. I don't think it is my hip. I am trying different stretches and I currently have a bag of frozen veggies on it. I definately don't want to do anything to injure myself so close to my first race!

Martha - I have said this before, but I have to say it again. I LOVE YOUR SIGGIE!!!! :thumbsup2 I am a VERY goal oriented person, and I thrive off of seeing progression, it gives me motivation and that SIG is such an awesome way to do it. AWESOME job on sticking it out under stinky conditions. :yay: IT's a good feeling to know that you can finish the distance of the upcoming race.
I know many, many people never go past 20 to 22 miles when they train for a full, but that terrifies:scared1: me. I already told DH that when we do the full at Disney this year we will do 26.2 at least once prior, just so I know that I can do it.
Going out for a little run now myself.

HI everyone, I am back from my 5 Miler race. It was my first race since Disney and it felt great. I posted the report on the report thread.
Dave - Last fall I ran my first 10K in 30 degree drizzle with 30-50 miler per hour wind gusts. I cried a bit because it was so miserable. I had on gloves and an ear warmer. 30 minutes before the race I almost drove home, but I stuck it out and finished. AND I got a medal for 2nd in my age category... there weren't very many in my age category, BUT WHO CARES, I got the medal!!!
Becky, don't know about that pain, I get a pain in hip and butt area. But it is related to a back injury. Stretching does wonders for me (plus losing weight). Do a search online for stretches for the area that hurts.
Martha - GREAT RUN. I am no where near as fast, so I think you are doing fabulous!!
OK, gotta give the family some attention!!!

I went on my LR today...I was originally only going to do 9 miles but I decided to do 10 since I missed a run this week. I felt pretty good at the end of my 10. I finished in 1:34:19...with an average pace of 9:25. I am pretty excited about my half marathon in 2 weeks!
The most exciting part of my run today was meeting a fellow disboard member on the trail!! Amy, if you are reading this, it was great meeting you!! Thanks to my WISH shirt, and her WDW marathon shirt, we were able to chat for a brief minute. I was really psyched to meet somebody from the boards!
Ok, now to catch up with everybody!

Now to catch up:
Mike--Great job on your LR! You are flying!
Martha--Great job on your run...sorry to hear the location was no good. I am surprised the fields at a college like that are in such poor condition.
Jennifer--WELCOME!! to the Boards! Good Luck at the Minnie!
ChiFive--WELCOME!! to the Boards! I hear you about not being able to run with headphones, I gotta start getting used to that if we are not going to be able to wear them!
Jackie--WTG for getting a run in!
Kiena--nice job on your LR...you aren't too far off of the pace you are supposed to keep!
Windwalker Dave-YIKES! Not sure i would want to be running in a sand storm!
Lisa---so glad to see you came on over to the Weekly thread...can't wait to read your journal to see how your run went!!
Becky-Good job on getting your 7 Miles...isn't it an awesome feeling to get your longest run in!!! I always thougth I would go slower on the TM, but I can go way faster on the TM than outside.
Jen--Glad you felt great after your race, can't wait to read about it on the race thread.
Sorry to those I missed! To those getting all this bad weather today and over the next couple of days....hang in there!

Martha - I am joining you in the NOTE TO SELF category:
NEVER TRy TO RUN AFTER DOING BODY PUMP CLASS IN MORNING AND BAKING AT THE BEACH FOR 2 HOURS!!
I know that all of you who are freezing in the cold and snow probably do not feel sorry for me right now (cause the beach was super nice :cool2: ) but I could not make it 4 miles and I am sitting here trying not to puke!!
It's hot here already, I can't wait to see what MINNIE is like in 3 weeks.!!!!
So it is going to cool off a little tomorrow, we will try again then!!

Becky-I am an athletic trainer (aka sports medicine)- while it's really hard to help you very much without seeing you in person to do the special tests, manual muscle tests, etc, I will give it a shot-
First, where exactly do you feel your pain? Is it directly in front of your leg, or off to one side a little bit? How high do you feel pain on your leg? How large of an area- ie, does it extend all the way down to your knee?
Second, when does it hurt? Does it hurt to walk? Are you limping? If you stand up, and lift the affected leg straight forward (as if to take a step forward), does that make it worse? Does it bother you if that leg is behind you (like when you are walking- does it hurt when that leg is extended back before it swings through to take a step?)
Another position to try to see if it is painful- sitting in a chair, take that leg, and "cross" it over the other almost like you are sitting "Indian style"- if you drop your knee down, does that hurt?
Do going up and/or down stairs bother you?
I am assuming you didn't feel a "pop" or anything during your run- anything though, where you felt like you ran off the road, or came off a curb wrong or anything?
Is anything swollen or bruised? Check you knee too; sometimes swelling isn't as apparent in a muscle as it is the next lowest joint.
As far as treatment, I would say go conservatively at first- anytime you have an acute injury, go with ice for at least the first 48 hours. If you add heat, you increase blood flow to the area, which increases swelling and bleeding. You can also take ibuprofen for pain/inflammation. I would maybe hold on any aggressive stretching for a day or so in case it is a muscle strain- if you overstretch a strain, it can increase pain/swelling since the muscle tissue has tearing to begin with. I always tell my athletes that they can stretch very gently if it feels good, but the second they feel any pain, back off.
Over the next couple days, you can gradually work up to more stretching- post how you are feeling, and I can try to help you decide when to add in the stretching again. What is your running plan this week? Can you take a day or two off? Let us know how you are feeling?
hth,
Lisa
PS- Do you have access to a pt at all? It may be a good idea to work on a HEP afterwards to strengthen hip flexors/groin muscles. Theraband exercises work really well. It is also a good idea to get a gait analysis check to make sure there isn't any compensation going on when you are running that can aggravate it- maybe discuss any modifications you need to make.

Woo hoo, last workout for the week, and it was a good one :)
Broke out the new Garmin 205 and went on a 5K. I was able to hold a 15:53 pace (finishing in 50 minutes). That's where I hoped to be in June! I even through in two short jogging bursts on the way home (like 40-50 yards each).
New shoes felt great and the high tech gadget certainly makes you want to work harder. I'm hoping the weather holds so I can do a nice long, relaxed walk tomorrow (4.5 to 5 miles). But I'll let you know on next week's thread :)
