We got ours last week and it went up $900. We right north of Hammond. We called and raised our deductible to help bring it down some. We all have to pay these increases.

My DH's sister bought her dream house in Florida on the coast a couple years ago. Her hurricane insurance is now $15,000. Oh my!

Got my crazy renewal too. Mind you, never had any hurricane damage, thank God, but I do live withing 2 miles of the ocean. Hurricanes were criss crossing the state of Florida the last few years and everyone here has seen their policies skyrocket. Mine was actually $800/yr 4 years ago, and USAA dropped us. Now with State Farm this year it is $3900! For a small 3 bedroom house.
I just called yesterday to raise my deductible to an alarming amount, but it lowered my premium to $2300. Got to do what you have to do to survive.

Oh yes, homeowner's insurance and especially wind and hail coverage has gone up everywhere. It doesn't matter what state had the damage. Ours is through the roof!

Prior to Katrina we paid less than 2000.00 per year for insurance but last year our insurance premium was over 12,000.00 dollars and will go up again this year to close to 20,000.00 per year unless our insurance commisioner has the hockey pucks to stand up to them.

DVC Sadie,
We have a vacation home in Gautier. Our homeowners was outrageous this time around. We called around and found Gary Smith Insurance Agency in Pascagoula to be the lowest (Wind/Hail- 2,128.00, Fire/Liability- 766.00, Flood- 264.00). You might want to call and check their rates. You guys were hit so hard, I hope that you are doing alright.

I live in Cameron Parish. Hurricane Rita destroyed our entire parish. I am in the northern part of the parish and I didn't get any storm surge water in our house. Our homeowners insurance went up $2000 per year! This is crazy! And, we don't even have flood insurance...

Aren't rates getting better and more companies are writing in Florida? I thought I read that on another thread. It gave me great comfort to think that this may be something that we have to deal with for the next couple of years and then there will be more choices and better rates. I was really hoping!!

South Carolina isn't any better either. We have seen our insurance premiums increase by 40-50% each year for the past three years. We had to increase our deductible and tried to shop around, but many insurance carriers are not even writing policies in coastal SC (we live more than 10 miles from the ocean, BTW).

I work for an insurance agency here in New Orleans and its the pits right now. Unless you have a house valued at $750,000 or more. Otherwise, its the FAIR Plan :(
And OKWmom, that's not far enough inland. Katrina was a category 1 when it hit Jackson, MS!!
I'm scared that my ins. carrier will pull out and I'll have to go with the FAIR Plan. If that happens, I know my rates will jump to about $4000 a year.
And it sure seems like our wonderful ins. commissioner is not willing to do some of the things that I've read about FL doing. So the consumers are getting royally screwed:sad2:

How well I know. I lived here when Hugo hit in 1989 (showing my age). I just meant all of the coastal areas are seeing huge increases, and those increases are not just for beachfront properties.

My family resided on the southshore(just outside N.O.) before Katrina but now we are all living on the Northshore and have seen our insurances increase beyond belief and this is when you can find someone to sell you insurance as we have had claims. My mom who is now in Mandeville (and her house didn't get any major damage from Katrina -neighbor stated that a few shingles were missing) was just quoted $3,000 for homeowners including wind/hail from state plan. We use to pay that for our house in N.O. prior to Katrina and that house was 50% larger than what she is living in now. Good news is to those living on the Northshore and if you are an AARP member you can call AARP to see if you can get homeowners coverage from them. My mom just turned 60 this year and when she called them 2 days ago they found that Hartford would offer her insurance through AARP for $800. Needless to say mom felt that her AARP membership was finally good for something now I wish I could say the same for me.

Thanks for the heads up on AARP! If AAA pulls out, I will definately use my AARP for something other than hotel discounts!!!!:rotfl2:
