What's the name of the hotel you are considering? I always book my parents into the Hyatt on Pine. There are several restaurants within walking distance. The Hilton and the Ramada are also in that area. The LB Airport Marriott is just outside of the airport, probably a half mile. The rooms are very nice and they have an excellent lunch buffet. Do not stay on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).

I recommend staying at the Hyatt or the Westin. If you want to go nostalgic you can stay at the Queen Mary. Its a bit old but kinda cool for historic buffs.
You want to stay near Downtown, near Pine. There are a LOT of restaurants within walking distance and its also a very nice walk around the water. If you have watched the Long Beach Grand Prix, then you have definitely seen the Hyatt in the background as its the only hotel overlooking the course. There are many nice areas in Long Beach but there are also bad areas. Most of the bad areas are north along the 710 freeway. Its really strange, when my husband and I lived there we lived in a great area in Belmont Heights and a couple of blocks west it was really bad and then a couple of blocks more, it was great.

There is a Super 8:
4201 East Pacific Coast Highway, Long Beach, CA 90804
It got quite a lot a good reviews on TripAdvisor. Would you say that the area around that hotel is also 'not-so-good?'
Thanks

We enjoy dining at King's Fish House, L'Opera (saw John Travolta a few tables over), and Madison -- all on Pine.
