Scenic Drive

We are flying into Long Beach Airport and I wanted to know if anyone could tell me the most scenic drive to get to San Diego...

the maps make it look like the roads run along the coast. But i want to know how realistic that is.

You can take PCH, or Highway 1 from Long Beach to San Clemente, then you have to pick up I-5 till Oceanside or Carlsbad and then go back along the ocean. It's pretty scenic as it goes through all the towns, but it takes forever because of traffic and stoplights. But if time is no option, it's a different ride.

In your opinion..is there a portion of that drive that would be the nicest? I mean could we do a little of the freeway..and then get off for a bit for a coastal drive..or is it all or nothing...

anything in particular to stop at or to make sure we enjoy on the way down?
