View Full Version : Bring us a Shrubbery!! May 25-June 1, 2007!!

I thought I'd get in on this whole "start-a-trip-report-before-you-even-actually-go-on-a-trip" craze that seems to be sweeping the DIS these days.
To make it even more fun, I'm still in the middle of trying to finish my last trip report. And we're entering the Death March phase at work. And I'm thinking of switching jobs. And there's a Harry Potter book being released this summer. Oh, and we're taking another trip to WDW in October of this year so I think if I haven't gone completely off the deep end (I usually just totter on the edge) I may end up having to do another report then.
I need a drink. ;)
Here's a quick run-down of our plans with more detailed details to come! You'll notice at this point that all we really know is where we're eating! :lmao: We're not on the dining plan but we do have the DDE card, so we should be able to get some good discounts. Sooner or later we'll figure out which parks we're going to and when - definitely looking forward to checking out the Flower and Garden Festival. Jason is garden-guy...he has green thumbs, fingers, and toes. Me, not so much. I like flowers and trees and topiaries and such, I'm just no good at keeping them alive. ;)
Friday, May 25th: Arrive at Saratoga Springs, but this time we have a grocery store stop planned! We learned something on our last visit (good for us!). No theme parks planned for today - we're relaxing at the pool and having dinner at Raglan Road.
Saturday, May 26th: The only thing I know is that we're having dinner at Jiko. And then I think we may end up at the Adventurers Club.
Sunday, May 27th: Gospel Brunch at House of Blues and dinner at Wolfgang Puck's Dining Room where I think we're going to try the tasting menu. Tonight is EMH at the Magic Kingdom so I think we're going to have to play in the MK after dark!
Monday, May 28th: Breakfast at the Kona (Jay must have his tonga toast) and dinner at Blue Zoo.
Tuesday, May 29th: Happy Anniversary to us!! We're celebrating at the Chef's Table at Victoria & Albert's, which means no food all day until 6PM! I think to take our minds off the fasting I will schedule some spa treatments at SSR's spa. There's no better time than now to give it a try!
Wednesday, May 30th: Dinner at California Grill...yummy yummy yummy!
Thursday, May 31st: Dinner at Rose & Crown, always one of our favorite ways to close out a visit to WDW.
Friday, June 1st: Departure....:charac2: but we'll back before we know it! :thumbsup2
Thanks for taking the time to stop in. Feel free to leave a suggestion or offer advice or even criticism should you feel the need. Most of the time you'll find me in a humorous mood, so join the fun!

Heheheh. You've been assimilated here, too? I thought I was nuts for
posting my pre-trippie. Wait. I am nuts. Nevermind. :rolleyes1
You're dining at places I've either enjoyed very much OR have on my "must
try on my next trip". And I didn't fast before my Chef's Table experience.
I had a little something to nosh on early in the day. :)
Oh, and I love the title of this report. Will the October trip be titled,
"Bring out yer dead! - I'm not quite dead yet!"?

It's too true...I've joined the collective. The next thing you know I'll be wandering around saying things like, "Individuality is irrelevant." ;)
Knowing that we're hitting some places you've already tried or want to try makes me feel a little better about some of our choices. It was hard to break out of our dining comfort zone, but it had to happen sooner or later. You probably noticed we left a few tried-and-trues in there.
And you make a great point about not starving ourselves before the CT - I'm sure we'll snack a bit earlier in the day...I should probably think about getting us somewhere for a decent breakfast...
I had a feeling you'd like the Phython reference! Can't think about a title for October just yet, but I do have one for a possible dining report for May. What do you think of "The Food was not Undelicious?" It's another Simpsons reference...sheeesh, it's like a disease.
Thanks for checking in! :goodvibes

Woo hoo!! Another trip-buddy! Thanks for stopping by and happy early birthday. Too bad that we're going to miss each other, it would be nice to finally meet some of you fine people face to face.
I say you should definitely start a trippie. You obviously have a good command of the English language and grammar and usage don't seem to be giving you a problem - those are the things I look for initially before getting too deep into a trippie. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I decipher stuff all day at work, I don't want to do it here, too. ;)
And I think the posts I've read from you are quite amusing - with your family gathering how could you not write a trippie? C'mon, you know you want to!
In the meantime, feel free to plan away on this thread if you'd like. The more the merrier! :thumbsup2
Thanks again for posting!

Anniversary breakfast...
just a ramble before I really start getting some work done (I swear I will!).
I was thinking of a character breakfast for this day, but the more I think about it the more I think we should just make ourselves a romantic breakie in the villa. Some cafe au lait, mimosas, and croissants on the balcony sound pretty good to me... and quiet and relaxing, too.
What do you guys think?

I think having breakfast is a good idea. The breakfast in the room you
mentioned sounds great. :)
Hmm, if I was going to use a Simpsons reference for October, it would have
to center around:
"Whenever my faith in God is shaken, I think of the miracle of anti-freeze."

I saw the shrubbery title :rotfl2: and I had to read your pre-trip report. DH and I recently went to see Spamalot on Broadway and I decided that it would be wise to do a quick refresher course on Monty Python, not anticipating how amusing my 3 little boys (excluding DH - he'd be the 4th little boy) would find it. As if it's not already bad enough being constantly surrounded by boys, I am now surrounded by boys quoting from Monty Python!!
They are amusing when they do it - especially when they running screaming from the room when I say certain words that must not be said. Fortunately, the British accents in the movie are so thick that they couldn't understand any of the truly inappropriate parts of the movie (inappropriate for boys aged 10 and under, that is), and have chosen to focus on Knights of Ni, shrubberies, swallows, and coconuts.
Life in my house is quite amusing!! :rotfl: I look forward to reading all about your trip!

Did you like Spamalot? We had a chance to see it here in November and we really enjoyed it - very cleverly done.

We loved Spamalot! It was very funny! I thought that the parts they added fit perfectly with the story's translation to the stage. When the boys are a little bit older, I might consider taking them to see it!

We now demand... ANOTHER SHRUBBERY!
Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. ("A path! A path!") Then, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forrest... with... a herring!”
*cough* Oh my. I need help.
Um, ANYWAY. I was doing the totally UN-nerdy thing of laying around reading my Passporter Treasure Hunt book today, and one of the questions is:
"What is the motto of Plankton's Seaside Yacht Repairs?"
It's located somewhere on Pleasure Island. If you get a photo of Plankton next to whatever this thing advertising Plankton's Repairs is, I will buy you a Kungaloosh, or various other beverage!

Hi Brenda - I think this is the first post I've had on one of your threads...but I'm a long time lurker. I LOVE your style - got hooked on the dining review and have read through the rest quickly and enjoyed all of them. DH, DS and I are looking forward to booking a 4 night cruise in November and DH sends his eternal thanks to you for the naughty couples mud treatment idea, after we pack DS off to happily camp out at the Oceaneer's Club. ;)
My best friend's daughter (3 next week!) is a huge fan of The Simpsons and everytime she mentions "the birds!" as she calls them, I am reminded of your reviews and TR's and it makes me grin as I count the days to my next trip.
Anyway, I thought it was a wee bit creepy that I feel like I "know" you better than I know some people in real life and have never posted, so I have decided to post and officially lose my "oybolshoi stalker" status.
Thanks for all the entertainment!

1) The naughty mud treatment for two is wonderful - I hope you and your Dh enjoy it as much as Jay and I did. If it gets too warm in the steam room, don't be afraid to prop the door to the sitting area open to give yourselves some cooler air - it can get very warm in there!

Glad to hear you're taking the tour - your DBF is really going to enjoy it. I even enjoyed it and trains don't really do much for me. BTW - you will both receive a nifty special pin at the end of the session. You can only get it by taking the tour (or I suppose by purchasing it on EBAY if someone were to sell theirs).

I wouldn't object to that at all - I love the Holy Hand Grenade! Actually I just love the entire movie...can't get enough of it. And since we're going to the Flower and Garden Festival it seemed like a good title for a trip report.

Okay just for you. I did not Google this. I have a book of the script that I got in London in my bookcase and it has not left the bookcase.
And St. Atilla raised the hand grenade on high saying, Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy....And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs, and stoats, and pomegranates (?) and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and...
(Skip a bit, Brother.)
And the Lord did speak, saying, First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. Three is the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four, shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceedest to three. Five is right out.
Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch toward thy foe, who, having been naughty in my sight, shalt snuff it.
Here endeth the lesson.

Well, I suppose before this gets too far along an introduction of sorts would be appropriate.
Oybolshoi - Brenda...37 going on 12 or 72, depending on the day; I love to plan me a vacation or twenty, and I love to write - in that way I escape from the sad knowledge that in the real world I toil for the soulless dominions of finance. I don't know how it happened...one day I was trying to get a job in the publishing industry and the next thing I knew I was working in commercial underwriting...it's a stinky mystery - like headcheese.
I like to think of myself as good-humored, flexible, and relatively intelligent. The world at large usually thinks I'm high strung, impatient, and at least smarter than a hamster.
DH - Jason, will turn 37 in May, just 15 days before we arrive at WDW. I've already informed him that in addition to the obligatory "Happy Anniversary" button he will be sporting on this trip, he will be wearing a birthday button, too. These future fashion accessories excite him almost as much as the prospect of attending the World Figure Skating Championships in Los Angeles with me in 2009.
The most laid back husband, ever. Responds to my vacation inquiries with, "Whatever you want," or "I can do that." Super-intelligent, handsome, musically gifted Simpsons addict...his brain is crammed with cartoon quotes. He never complains about the ridiculous amount of luggage he has to carry for the two of us and puts up with me, which should have earned him a medal or a lifelong sainthood award by now.
Here's a picture of us on our last Disney cruise - I chose this because we had to cancel the cruise we had scheduled for this October and I'm still very sad about that. This picture makes me both happy and sad. What can I say...I'm a paradox. Or...the two of us are a pairofdorks!!! :lmao: :lmao:
Warning - if you don't enjoy puns or self-mockery, you're probably going to want to bail on the trippie right now because it's only going to get worse from this point on. That's a promise!

We don't have children...some days I think it's probably better that way, and some days I wonder what it would have been like to have a small demented version of Jay and me wandering around the house. For the most part I'm philosophical about it - things happen for a reason and between Crohns Disease and Endometriosis my reproductive system has apparently decided that it's best to stop the genetic madness with me. When I consider some of the people I'm related to, I don't think that this is such a bad idea. ;)
Jay and I do have a baby, though. His name is Handsome Pete and he is the smartest cat-dog we've ever come across. He's an orange tabby - the vet told us that this is typically one of the friendliest breeds of cat available to mankind, and I don't doubt it. When the doorbell rings at our house Pete is there before Jay or me. He never hides when we have people over, not even when my mom is around. He also has dog-like tendencies - he plays fetch, he chews on things, and he comes running whenever we call his name.
Pete's been our baby for 6 years - we adopted him when he was only 6 months old. He's a great cat, but he doesn't like it when we travel.

Jay and I also have a vacation mascot...he needs no introduction, or does he?

Not fair!!! It's too sad to see a pic of y'all in the stateroom!
I have a pretty laidback husband as well. Don't they have to be, since they are married to such Disney addicts? Rob has just learned to say yes to almost everything and shake his head when he thinks I am crazy, which is much of the time.
Just last night I was telling him "Dis-stuff" and he usually let's it go in one ear and out the other, but when I mentioned Monty Python, he perked up his ears. He said, "They sound a lot like us!" Of course when I told him that y'all were not able to join us in October, he looked at me like, "Why did you lift my spirits by making me think I would have a friend?" I was very amused by this.:rotfl:
He ( and my DD13 and DS11 ) love Monty Python! He hasn't let them see everything, but when they start quoting the ones they have seen, I just think it is so funny.
Sorry to go off on a tangent....keep writing and let us know what you plan. You're doing a lot of things that we haven't been able to do yet, so I am very interested. I won't be back in WDW until 08 (our first time in a DVC) so they have time to make lots of improvements--not that they need any. In fact, I can only think of one--they need to hire my husband in 4 years. If they do that, you and I will maybe finally get to meet face to face!:)

That's too funny - I used to write out scenes from Airplane and Young Frankenstein. :lmao:

Hi Paige ... sorry to disappoint the DH. Our sense of humor will be with you in spirit...does that help? And I've heard rumblings of a possible Plankton-snatch so he might show up unexpectedly on the cruise. ;)

What IS it with cats and suitcases, anyway?
I think Pete's attitude would be - Save the Best for Last!! ;)
I'm convinced he parks himself on top of the suitcase for one of two reasons -
1) he thinks he can sneak in when we're not looking, and thus share in the adventure; or
2) he is convinced that his "cute-kitty-staredown" will intimidate us enough to make us change our plans.
Cats...don't you just love them?

Brenda, When is DH Birthday? Is he a Taurean too? I am May 12th and fit my Taurus profile perfectly. DH is an Aries. We have a very interesting relationship. You know the thing with magnets and their poles that you learned in school? Yep, that's us. We love to pick a fight but just with each other. When it comes to outsiders we band together like the Beatles -Pre Yoko. Just from reading your TR's it sound like Jay fits his astrological profile too! Take a look:
The Bull
April 21 to May 21
Traditional
Taurus Traits:
Patient and reliable
Warmhearted and loving
Persistent and determined
Placid and security loving
On the dark side....
Jealous and possessive
Resentful and inflexible
Self-indulgent and greedy
The Taurean's characteristics are solidity, practicality, extreme determination and strength of will - no one will ever drive them, but they will willingly and loyally follow a leader they trust. They are stable, balanced, conservative good, law-abiding citizens and lovers of peace, possessing all the best qualities of the bourgeoisie. As they have a sense of material values and physical possessions, respect for property and a horror of falling into debt, they will do everything in their power to maintain the security of the status quo and be somewhat hostile to change.
Mentally, they are keen-witted and practical more often than intellectual, but apt to become fixed in their opinions through their preference for following accepted and reliable patterns of experience. Their character is generally dependable, steadfast, prudent, just, firm and unshaken in the face of difficulties. Their vices arise from their virtues, going to extremes on occasion, such as sometimes being too slavish to the conventions they admire.
On rare occasions a Taurean may be obstinately and exasperatingly self-righteous, unoriginal, rigid, ultraconservative, argumentative, querulous bores, stuck in a self-centered rut. They may develop a brooding resentment through nursing a series of injuries received and, whether their characters are positive or negative, they need someone to stroke their egos with a frequent, "Well Done!" Most Taureans are not this extreme though.
They are faithful and generous friends with a great capacity for affection, but rarely make friends with anyone outside their social rank, to which they are ordinarily excessively faithful. In the main, they are gentle, even tempered, good natured, modest and slow to anger, disliking quarreling and avoiding ill-feeling. If they are provoked, however, they can explode into violent outbursts of ferocious anger in which they seem to lose all self-control. Equally unexpected are their occasional sallies into humor and exhibitions of fun.
Although their physical appearance may belie it, they have a strong aesthetic taste, enjoying art, for which they may have a talent, beauty (recoiling from anything sordid or ugly) and music. They may have a strong, sometimes unconventional, religious faith. Allied to their taste for all things beautiful is a love for the good things of life pleasure, comfort, luxury and good food and wine and they may have to resist the temptation to over indulgence, leading to drunkenness, gross sensuality, and covetousness.
:offtopic: Sorry- Ok, now on with the show.

So, since the hubby is using the primary computer this evening I'm going to play around over here for a bit rather than update the Argie-Bargie. Jay has to work late tomorrow night and then he has to go out of town on Wednesday, so I'll have two straight evenings of uninterrupted computer time to update the October trippie.
Is anyone else a menu freak? I love to look at the menus of the restaurants we have ADRs at and think about what I'm going to order...especially when I'm sitting at my desk at work eating yogurt or soup or McDonalds (shame on me for eating that crap, but I'm addicted to junk food).
Today I was thinking about Raglan Road again...the most recent menu on All Ears is from last March and that was not the menu we had in October. I know because I'd wanted to order the Salmon Forest for a shared appetizer that night (described thusly: forks of Irish smoked salmon and cream cheese served with blinis). It sure sounded yummy but it was not meant to be.
I guess we can stick with the Dalkey Duo - those were pretty good, especially with beer! We've already decided that we're not trying any whisky / whiskey on this visit - we're sticking with beer only this time. The restaurant offered 4 different beer flights when we were last there...I wonder how Jay and I would fare if we tried all four of them? :scared:
I know I'll order the fish and chips again - it was really good. And somehow we're going to have to save room for that bread and butter pudding...I'm getting all droolie just thinking about it.
It's funny - I never used to like bread pudding. And then I tried a bread pudding souffle at Commanders Palace in New Orleans a few years ago and experienced taste nirvana. Now, much to my parents slack-jawed disbelief, I will occassionally order it for dessert. Shocking!!
I have to admit, though, that there are two other dessert items that look rather appealing: the Bailey's Coffee Cream Pot (Think tiramisu with an Irish twist) and the Dunbrody Kiss, which must be a surprise because no explanation has been provided.
A mystery dessert...hmmmmm...do we chance it?

Raglan Road update: Talked with the hubby last night about the drinking / dessert dilemma. As usual Jay cut right to the chase:
"Beer flight #1 gets paired with the appetizer selection; Beer flight #2 pairs with the entree; Beer flight #3 pairs with first dessert; and Beer flight #4 pairs with second dessert. Hobbits have second breakfast, we have second dessert. Problem solved."
How can I argue with that? :lmao:
I'm assuming that we'll head over to Epcot on Saturday morning...but we will not be requesting a wake-up call. ;)
On a different menu note, I have to figure out a way to get us over to Ghiradelli on this trip. Would you believe that we've never shared a diet devastating delectation here? I take full responsibility for this - I can't eat the kind of stuff they serve in really hot weather, especially during the day. So we've always tried to go at night, only to find 20,000 people had the same brilliant idea.
I'm thinking that on the day we arrive we should grab a quick bite to eat at DTD and then follow it up with a belt-blasting selection from the ice cream parlor. Won't my swimsuit look great on me after that? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Looking at their current menu I think I already know what Jay is going to want:
Espresso Escape - Two scoops of espresso chip ice cream, dark chocolate hot fudge sauce, whipped cream and a square of Espresso Escape Intense Dark chocolate.
I will probably opt for something like this:
Warm Brownie Sundae - A scoop of premium vanilla ice cream paired with warm Ghirardelli double chocolate brownie smothered with hot fudge sauce and topped with whipped cream, chopped almonds and a cherry.
HOLD THE ALMONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I REPEAT - HOLD THE ALMONDS OR I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HORRIBLE EVENTS THAT MAY UNFOLD WITH ASTONISHING RAPIDITY IN YOUR ICE CREAM PARLOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know that may seem extreme, but sometimes you really have to drive home the point about the nuts, even when you are nuts!! ;)

Has anyone here tried their spa? I am a little underwhelmed by their selection and their prices but it's so convenient that I really wanted to give it a try.
They offer a discount on hydro-massage therapies to DVC members but I'm not sure if Jay or I would enjoy that kind of treatment. If anyone reading this can supply some advice I'd sure appreciate it.

But it does come in handy when traveling with my mom (one of the pickiest eaters ever and a handy babysitter) who would start each morning by asking where we were eating and when I'd tell her where, she'd ask if they had anything she'd eat there. Since I had all the menus printed out, I could just hand it to her so she could review her options. :lmao:

As promised here is the most fabulous recipe for Sticky Toffee Pudding. I am not responsible for sudden uncontrollable spikes in your blood sugar, either while reading the ingredient list or while ingesting the finished product.
Sticky Toffee Cake
Ingredients:
1/2 pound chopped, dried dates (1 1/2 cups, packed)
1 1/3 cups hot water
1 1/3 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup unsalted butter
1 cup super-fine sugar
3 medium eggs
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9x13 baking pan with butter and then coat with flour.
Combine dates and hot water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, add baking soda, and set aside to cool.
In a mixing bowl cream the butter and sugar on high for about 3 minutes. With the mixer on low add one egg at a time, beating after each addition. When the mixture is well-combined, add flour, baking powder, and salt and make some batter. Then add the liquid-y dates. **At this point your batter is going to look like puke: brownish-green with lumps - don't worry; it will change colors while baking** Add vanilla, stirring just enough to incorporate into the mixture.
Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the cake is firm.
Sticky Toffee Caramel Sauce
4 cups packed brown sugar
1 pound of butter
2 teaspoons of vanilla
1 pint of whipping cream
Stir together the sugar, butter, and vanilla over low heat until blended and the sugar has liquified. Whisk in the pint of whipping cream to make a more rich and smooth sauce.
Serve the cake (should you choose to share) warm, with heated sauce poured over the top. You can add a spritz of whipped cream if you'd like, but I think that detracts from the overall flavor of the cake and sauce.
The Grimace's preferred serving method is a small piece of cake in a bowl of sauce, with some sauce on the side.
Enjoy!!! :goodvibes

Tonight my menu of choice has been Jiko. I'm struggling with that one a little bit because I am still something of a picky eater. I've heard that their filet with macaroni and cheese is really good.
Have you ever been to Jiko?
Has anyone reading this ever been to Jiko?

If you do make this be sure to let me know what you think. I always get raves when I make this, but it's such a heavy dessert that I usually save it for Fall / Winter.
A good glass of tawny port or a nice whisky / whiskey would probably pair pretty well with this, too.

There will probably be legislation coming out very soon that will ban that dessert in California. "This dessert is known to the state of California to cause cancer, gross obesity, and the desire for more. California: We're Legislating for Your Health." :rotfl:
QQ - do you put all the "juice" from soaking the dates in with it or do you drain them first?

No problem! Right now it sounds a lot more appealing than the bowl of cheerios I'm forcing myself to eat. I hate cereal for breakfast...by the time I get to work I'm hungry again. Then I become a hobbit and I have to eat second breakfast, which is usually yogurt. Once lunchtime rolls around my stomach is usually trying to digest itself because I'm still so hungry. :lmao:

Lunchtime menu dreaming, because I can....
Saturday night (5/26) we have ADRs at Jiko for....uh, hang on...7PM. I'm not sure what time we should leave SSR for the AK... my thought is that we might be better off walking over to DTD and catching a direct bus to the lodge rather than waiting for a bus to the Animal Kingdom and switching out over there.
I want to allow enough time to explore the AKL and maybe stop in at Victoria Falls. I've heard that they still offer some unique drink selections.
And then there's the menu at Jiko...I'm really not the most adventurous of eaters. I've gotten better over the years, but let me tell you - Jiko is definitely outside of my comfort zone. I have high hopes, however, that it will be more rewarding than our experience at Restaurant Marrakesh last year.
Jay and I usually share an appetizer...so let's start with that option. Deb has a dinner menu from March of this year so my choices may be similar come May.
Of all the choices listed, I think the Kenyan Coffee Barbecued Chicken Flatbread (with grilled onions, apple julienne, and four cheeses) might be our best option. Although barbecued food and my intestinal tract really don't mesh well.
Here's an interesting second choice: Maize and Sweet Potato "Tamales" (herbed maize pudding and truffled sweet potato mash with shredded goat cheese in a corn husk boat). This sounds, at least on the surface, like a much less spicy and therefore less dangerous selection.
For our main course I do believe I'm going to have to play it safe: Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon, with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce.
I will graze timidly from Jason's plate at this restaurant. And I have no idea what he's going to order because he'd eat every single item currently listed on Jiko's entree list. His potential choice will just have to remain a mystery for another 58 days.
I'm hoping we can save room for the cheese plate...I loves me some cheese.
Here's the current selection: Cypress Grove's Humboldt Fog, Midnight Moon, and Mt. McKinley Chevre, Laura Chenel's Cabecou, and French Abbaye de Belloc Sheep, with spiced fruit jam and crostini.
And then there is dessert.
If we share a dessert it will probably be this: Flourless Chocolate-Mocha Cake Stack with vanilla ice cream and chocolate caramel sauce. Sounds yummy, doesn't it?
Actually we share dessert and appetizers a lot when we eat out while on vacation. Last year was something of an oddity because of the dining plan - but gaaaaack...what an awful lot of food that forces you to order. And if you're like me and you rarely finish everything you order, stuff ends up getting wasted.
So those are my thoughts on Jiko for the moment. If anyone reading has any suggestions or comments about Jiko I'd love to read them. :thumbsup2

What about Berbere Braised Lamb Shank, Wood-Grilled Pork Tenderloin, or Tamarind Braised Beef Short Rib? Those all look really good to me, too. Although, short ribs, while they can be amazingly good, also tend to create "the window to weight gain" if you know what I mean. :rotfl2:

He's an orange tabby - the vet told us that this is typically one of the friendliest breeds of cat available to mankind, and I don't doubt it. When the doorbell rings at our house Pete is there before Jay or me. He never hides when we have people over, not even when my mom is around. He also has dog-like tendencies - he plays fetch, he chews on things, and he comes running whenever we call his name. Pete's been our baby for 6 years - we adopted him when he was only 6 months old. He's a great cat, but he doesn't like it when we travel.
We have an orange tabby named Chip, and that is EXACTLY how I would describe him. He is 6 yrs old, and my oldest son gave him to me on Mother's day a few months after I had to put my 19 year old gray tabby down with cancer. We always tell him he's not a dog! When someone pulls in the driveway, he runs to the back door and waits to see who it is. It's amazing. All you have to do is get his attention, and call his name, and he will come running. He loves to lay under my daughter's electric blanket, and he sets on the register with my son during the winter! Your vet is definitely right - our Chippie is 'Mr. Personality'

Sunday morning is Gospel Brunch at House of Blues - we're really looking forward to this. Jay and I are big fans of HoB and we think this should be a really interesting experience. And...

Ever so excited and just had to share...
You know that May 29th is our anniversary and I wanted to have some spa treatments as a nice way to relax before our Chef's Table dinner.
Well, the spa offerings at Saratoga Springs just weren't doing it for me. To my jaded eye their menu seems very limited.
So I was talking (via email) with the hubby about it and he just emailed me back and said, "Forget about SSR's spa, let's just go back to the Mandara again."
:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:
This is actually what I wanted all along. In my mind the only thing SSR's spa had going for it was convenience. Their choices are more limited, their prices are as high, if not higher in some instances, than Mandara, and the DVC discount didn't apply to anything that we were really interested in doing.
The Mandara Spa over at the Dolphin is like something out of an exotic Balinese dream - I promise to take pictures this time so that you can see for yourselves.
I was able to book a 10:30AM Time for Two Massage. Here, read the description: Indulge together and enjoy a 50-minute aromatic massage side by side. You may then relax in your private hydrotherapy jacuzzi tub for an additional 30 minutes. We'll give you a bottle of Elemis Exotic Frangipani Monoi Moisture Melt to take home for future indulgence.
:cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:
That moisture melt is awesome - I received some in a gift box and it was wonderful. You have to place the bottle in hot water to turn it back to liquid and then you have this wonderful scented oil that feels great!
Anyway, I just wanted to share the excitement. This will be a lovely way to spend the late morning and early afternoon...I can't wait.

The joy of working in an operations center is that when the temperature hits 70 degrees outside, regardless of the time of year, the air conditioner turns on inside.
I had a space heater going under my desk this afternoon with the air conditioning blowing down across my neck. It will be like a meat locker in my office for the next six months.

That's funny, because at my hospital, when the outside temperature goes BELOW 70 the heat kicks in and we all swelter to death. Well, maybe not to death. But we certainly do swelter.

Well, I'm just having to post and get all excited because your trip will overlap mine for a bit. I have no doubt that you will be able to spot me in the crowd... I will be the mom with the newly dyed light brown hair (because I have to get a new color for Disney... currently scheduled for dying the first weekend of May), wearing a Mickey head print straight-jacket because yes, I am staying in one room with my 3 tweenage children and my husband who is really a child but masquerades as an adult. I'm seriously questioning my sanity, and the trip is eight weeks away. Ah, well, your food report from last fall has convinced me that WDW is full of wonderful alcohol filled drinks that are just begging me to sample them. So I'll take the cheap room and spend the money we're saving on alcohol. Sounds like a good compromise to me.

I feel your pain, only I am taking a teen, a tween, a couple of pre-tweens, a couple of preschoolers, and an infant. :scared1: Whole lot of nuttiness there. LOL

That's funny, because at my hospital, when the outside temperature goes BELOW 70 the heat kicks in and we all swelter to death. Well, maybe not to death. But we certainly do swelter.
See? There are negatives to living in Florida. ;)
I don't think it's living in Florida that's the negative...it's having to work that's the problem! ;)
I'm jumping on here early, well 8 pages :rotfl2:, that spa sounds lovely, can't wait to hear more :thumbsup2
DisneyJo, hello and thanks for jumping aboard!! I love Mandara spas...I only to get to try them when we vacation in Florida or Vegas so I'm very excited to pay them a visit.
I have no idea what this is, but I kind of want to drink it. Grande, no whipped cream.
YAY for your spa day!!! Mucho excitement!
Crystal, whatever you do, don't drink the moisture melt!! :lmao: :lmao:
BUT...if you must, then how can you forgo the whipped cream???

Do they serve alcohol at character meals? :rotfl2:
Hi BrerMama! Thanks for reading - I'm always excited to see new DISfriends popping in. I like your vacation attitude, by the way! And yes, there are myriad alcoholic opportunities awaiting you at the World...I hope to try a few more of them myself next month!
I'll keep an eye out for you! :goodvibes

No, but one time in college--he's not proud of this mind you--he was out of milk so he put apple wine cooler on apple jacks. :scared1:
Chef Mickey's pina colada smoothie was the next best thing to alcohol for me, as I was still nursing #6. It was VERY tasty! :goodvibes
I have to tell you, dh is saying he wants to "beer taste around the world," and he has this description that starts out walking in Mexico and ends with him draped over the double stroller in Canada. Has us in stitches. :rotfl:
And he's a deacon at our church!!! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:
(Shhh, don't tell...)
Not that he actually would do it. The prices start to hit him in his most painful part, his wallet. LOL

I had a friend in college who ran out of milk and poured beer on her cheerios one morning. She actually liked it so much that she started doing it on a regular basis.
Mmmmm..beerios!
I've since lost touch with her but I wonder sometimes if she's on the 12-step plan...;)
The beers around the world thing does get pricey - if you're there during F&W make sure DH gets to the free beer seminars - Sam Adams hosts one a couple of times per day and so does InBev. Four or five beers for "free"...not too bad a deal! :thumbsup2

This is totally out of order in terms of our itinerary, but I started wondering about our dinner reservation for Blue Zoo (which is on 5/28).
Jay and I have never seen Fantasmic...do you believe that? We hear all these great things about it and then we never go.
So...if I know how to read WDW's operating calendar (and I'm not sure that I do) it looks like MGM is open late on the evening that we'll be sweeping the seas clean at Blue Zoo.
What I need to figure out is what time MGM shows Fantasmic...for some reason I'm under the impression that during the busy times MGM has two showings. If that's true, we could gorge at the restaurant and then catch a Friendship over to MGM, if the boat doesn't sink along the way from our combined after-dinner weight.
Anyone ever been to Fantasmic? What's the scoop? We have a 7PM ADR at BZ, so would we even be able to make the second show?
So many questions...
I know - let's look at the menu and think about all the yummies that have to taste better than this Yoplait Whip I'm eating for lunch.
For an appetizer I'm torn between the Garlic Roasted Jumbo Shrimp with creamy polenta and fennel butter (I'm a sucker for good polenta!) or the Vietnemese Crab Salad with street vendor style melon and mango, aromatic herbs, and coconut green curry.
Maybe we can order both... ?
As far as entrees go...I have no idea. I think I'll hold out for the fish of the day and see what happens.
I wonder if Jay will order lobster or the Chilean Sea Bass? I'm putting my money on the sea bass.
Desserts...oh I am so disappointed! When we canceled our ADR here in October they had something called the Bluezoo 5d, which was a sampling of five different desserts, mostly chocolate in nature.
Now it's gone! :sad2:
The best option (since Jay and I tend to split dessert) is the C4...Cirtus in 4 Textures:
yuzu creme brulee and kumquat confit, grapefruit sorbet, orange vanilla soup, and lemon mango molten cake.
I guess I can suffer through that. ;)
Here's something exciting: They offer a Blueezoo drink flight for $15... yummy!!
Drink #1: The Caribbean - bacardi limon rum and lemoncello shaken with fresh lemon and pineapple juices.
Drink #2: The Bluezoo Cosmo - ketel one citroen, cointreau, and lime juice topped with cranberry foam. **I've read good good things about this one!**
Drink #3: Haiku Screw: hangar mandarin and rock candy topped with an orange ginger foam.
Something tells me we're really going to enjoy Fantasmic if we can actually walk out of Bluezoo under our own power. :lmao:

Sunday morning is Gospel Brunch at House of Blues - we're really looking forward to this. Jay and I are big fans of HoB and we think this should be a really interesting experience.
We've done the Gospel Brunch here at the W. Hollywood HoB...very fun! Well, Cowboy Grimace didn't like it, but he was (generally) a good sport about it. The breakfast buffet was better than we thought it would be, too.
(Your idea for AARP-Grimace-action-figures on your trippie thread made me laugh. Apply for a trademark, NOW!)
And I was glad to hear that your Grimace didn't break the bank in Vegas...we did Ok, but probably need to detox for the next few days...;)

Michelle thanks for the great suggestions - it's so nice to hear something...anything about Blue Zoo - doesn't seem to get a lot of press here. Probably because it's not on the DDP.

I noticed last year that Bluezoo's menu didn't change all year while I was eyeballing it - on the surface it looks like it changes radically once a year and then they make some seasonal changes off and on.
I will take pictures and post a review when we get back - maybe that will help you decide?

Thanks to both of you for your advice. I was thinking that since Sunday night is super-EMH at the Magic Kingdom that I might dump the Wolfgang Puck Dining Room ADR and pick something closer to the MK. Has anyone ever eaten at Citricos or Narcooooooseeeeeesssssss? I've love messing around with the name of that restaurant. ;) I'd like to hear some opinions before possibly changing one of our ADRS....
We have been to both numerous times. Citricos was wonderful! It is my favorite place to dine whilst at the world. We are actually going to be there for my Birthday dinner in May. Let me see if I can remember what I had to eat.
Appetizers:
Me: Arancini-Deep fried risotto w/ italian sausage, quattro formaggi and white truffle aioli. It was good. Kinda greasy and cheesy. I have had better.
DH: Wood smoked Mushroom Ravioli with madeira broth and serrano ham. All I can say if WOW!! I don't eat fungus and this was wonderful.
Entrees:
Me: Pan roasted golden tile with lemon butter broth and smoked corn risotto. :faint: It is the most wonderful, delicate fish that just melts in your mouth. I wanted to lick the bowl but didn't think it would go over too well. I did have on a very nice Ralph Lauren sundress and didn't want to chance the dry cleaning bill at WDW.
DH:Braised Veal Shank with carrot-potato puree and roasted veggies. A moment of silence is needed for this dish. The veal just fell of the bone. All you had to do was look at it and it all feel apart! So juicy and tender. And the carrot-potato puree was creamy and sweet you almost thought it to be sweet potato.
Dessert:
Me: Warm Chocolate Banana Tart with vanilla bean ice cream and caramelized bananas. It was good. Not the best I have had but good. After the amazing entrees anything would have a hard time following.
DH: Some "Dreams" special dessert. Something orangy and sherberty with cake. Nothing to write home about (or remember for that matter)
We also did the wine flights with both our meals. My wines were mostly whites while DH had a good mix. He had a 20 yr old port with dessert and I had coffee with khalua and amaretto.
Narcoossees. We have been here several times and I have to say the new chef that is there now is terrific. I know he came over from another WDW restaurant but can't think of it right now. Anyone know?
Anywho, on with the food. This is from our last trip in September.
Appetizers:
Me:Crab cakes with remoulade and fresee slaw. They were much better than the cakes they had before. The others had pine nuts and capers and were very salty. But the new ones were very tasty with the remoulade.
DH: Chilled shrimp w/ cucumber avocado salsa. He ended up eating them with my remoulade. They were very plump and sweet and perfectly chilled.
Entree:
Me: Steamed WHOLE Maine Lobster w/ drawn butter and roasted asparagus. YUM :thumbsup2 Very good. Not over cooked one bit!
DH: Filet Mignonand lobster tail potato gratin and green pepercorn brandy sauce. The tail usually comes butter poached but DH has a hard time with too much butter so asked if it could be steamed. No Problem! The chef even brought our meals out to us and sat and chatted a little.
We were eating late that night, 8:45pm, so the dining room was pretty quiet by the time our food came out. He was wonderful! I told him how much I enjoyed the new crab cakes and he was very pleased to hear that.
Dessert:
I am sad to say I don't remember what we had for dessert! The chef brought us something special. All I remember is chocolate and Grand Marnier and it was heaven!
Had you also mentioned something about Artist Point? Well her ya go (even if you didn't! ;) )
We also ate here on our September trip. With being just the two of us we tend to eat very well when we vacation. At home though... Fish sticks and tater tots. This restaurant is beautiful. Not to metion this is my favorite resort. The big windows and high ceilings make you feel like taking a big breath when you walk in. Like you could actually smell the tall timber from Yosemite. And the wines they have. Just phenomenal. A little pricey but you are on vacation. So suck it up! On with the food
Artist Point:
Appetizers:
Me: Duck Confit with frisee-anjou pear salad, cherry vinaigrette and duck prosciutto. I have to take a break :sad1: This dishes was so out of this world I wanted to cry. Every single bite just burst with flavor. The duck was very mild and the cherry vinaigrette and pear added just the right amount of tart. I wanted 5 more plates.
DH: Crispy Venison Spring Rolls with hot sweet and sour sauce. Loved it, Loved it, LOVED IT! Again not enough! Can we have larger portions, please?!
Entrees:
Me: Cedar Plank Salmon. It was good. A little on the dry side but good. I have also had the Grilled Buffalo Sirloin and that was wonderful. Very lean and flavorful!
DH: Grilled Beef Tenderloin w/ port wine reduction. He said it was very good and ate everything.
We also had the wine flights with our meal. We got the four course flight even though we had only three courses. We just wanted to try a wide range of things. We didn't get the same wines so we had 8 different wines to try that night.
Dessert:
We both had the special "Celebration" dessert. I can't remember what it was. I don't think we finish it.
We are going back to both Citicous and Narcoossees in May. No room for Artist Point.:headache: We may hit it in October.

Just want to jump on the Good Grub/Adult Beverage lover's bandwagon. Only been to the World twice in 20 years, being a left-coaster, but I have liquidated my granddaughter's college fund to finance a Disney Cruise next year. (Just kidding about the college $ but a second on the house might be in order!) And of course since we have to make the long trek across the country, we will be spending at least a week at WDW, too.
We are lifelong lovers of Disneyland since our first visit the year it opened. But DL is sadly lacking in the good eats department. WDW is indeed a whole nother story! Our first WDW trip was back in 1986 so food choices were pretty limited. (Please, no comments about when you were born. ) We spent two full days eating & drinking our way around Epcot. Imagine our surprise to discover a restaurant IN the castle at Magic Kingdom! And keep in mind there was no such thing as character meals or ADRs back then. Our last visit was in 2006. My oh my, how things had changed. Since we went without children, our focus was less about amusement park rides but rather the discovery of the gastranomic delights with the added ingredient of pixie dust.
My search for dining options led me to the Dis and all the fabulous trip reports. And many, many hours of menu browsing at Deb's site as well. So here I am, living vicariously & counting the lonnnnggg months until our trip across the continent. Please, please, pleeeez...(with cherry, whip cream but no nuts) include lots of detailed desciption & pictures.:thumbsup2
I do have a question for all you experts: which restaurants are NOT on the DDP? You see, my research leads me to believe that there has been a decline in both the offerings & ambiance at the eateries that participate. I am more than a little miffed about that possibility. I would just as soon choose the non-participants if this alledged trend continues.

Wow...a full review of three restaurants right here on the Shrub!! All three of those dinners sound delish! :thumbsup2 Thanks so much for taking the time to post all of that information for us.
Now I'm starving and have nothing to eat but a banana and some tomato soup. ;)
I think we're going to try AP in October. The only ADR I could switch out on this trip would be California Grill, which is on Wednesday night...and we both really wanted to go back there again. So I guess I'm leaving everything alone like Jay told me to!
I guess we'll have to fit them all in come October.
Maybe I'll call that trip report: Bye-Bye Belt! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Barndweller, hello and thanks for stopping by!! I will do my best to give you lots of good pictures and details. If you want something to tide you over you can follow the link in my signature for a dining report I did from our most recent trip in October (As God is My Witness)... it's ten days of pictures and food and inlcudes the Food & Wine Festival.
Speaking of F&W...you simply must come to WDW in October some time if you enjoy good eats. The Food & Wine Festival is one of the primary reasons we go to WDW in the fall.
Off the top of my head, restaurants not included on the DDP inlcude Bistro Paris, Victoria & Albert's, all restaurants in the Swan and the Dolphin...I'm sure there must be some others - feel free to chime in here, fellow foodies! But there are a lot of places that do accept DDP - we were pleasantly surprised in Ocotber by just how many dining options were available to us under the plan.
I hope to see more of you around here - we're all food and drink lovin' DIS-buddies around here. We're a fun group! :thumbsup2
Oh, and I hope you enjoy your Disney Cruise - we had to cancel ours for this year, but we've sailed twice before and it's a lovely experience. :goodvibes

I think I have to induct new members of the Larded and Loaded Tour.
The foodie talk is making me drool. It's not a good look for me.
So now, I'm torn for October. So many choices that I  and not much
time to do them. I had been leaning toward the non-DDP places because
of the comment about the decline in variety since DDP took over.
Keep it up, foodies! :dance3:

We've decided to forgo another visit to V&A in favor of a signature dinner during F&W (we hope) and I know that we want to try for a Le Cellier food & wine pairing...but otherwise I'm still pretty clueless.

The regular Ann Taylor... although I like Loft a lot, too.
I usually buy a lot of their stuff on-line (better selection and great sales) and then if I don't like the look of it once I receive it I just take it back to a local store.
I know what you mean though about the intimidation thing...their sales staff can be a bit snooty. When I run across those people I bring up an embarrassing topic of conversation to make them go away. ;)

Instead of having dinner at Rose and Crown on Friday night, we're going to have dinner at AP instead. A 7:30PM ressie - just ask for a window seat when you check in!
As much as we love R&C, we've eaten there many times and we just thought it would be nice to try another new place (with new booze) instead.

The sommalier (sp?) at Tchoup Chop turned us on to that last year as a special treat because Jay and I are just the kind of people who inspire that kind of alcoholic generosity in others. Of course, it probably didn't hurt that we were already dropping about $300 on dinner... :lmao: :lmao:

Egad, if you make dinner plans on Friday night....you might have a conflict
with the LeCellier food and wine pairing, if this event is held on Fridays
like it has been for the last few years. :scared: The food and wine
pairings take place around 3pm, give or take a half hour. (Each pairing
event has a staggered time. Some start at 2:30, others at 3 and still
others at 3:30. I think Le Cellier's was at 3pm.)
I'm not sure how hungry you'll be at 7:30pm!
That's what bugs me about not having the Festival booking info as far
in advance as the 180 day dining reservation availability.

But thank you for looking out for us - I appreciate it! :flower3:
And I totally agree about the 180-day mark and trying to coordinate with F&W. I'm trying to leave dates open for certain events we want to try, but I also want to make sure we have ADRs for those "must-do" restaurants on our list.

There has been so much chatter about May and October that for all us I thought I'd better take another look at my ADRs for May and make sure that I didn't botch something up.
So without further ado...
Friday, May 25th - Arrival at MCO at 10:30AM. Florida Tours is picking us up at the airport and we've requested a grocery store stop this time. The last thing Disney needs is two starving, hung-over "adults" scrounging for food at SSR. I guess I need a grocery list - that's a first for vacation. I hope the store takes credit cards!
We're going to try to grab some quick lunch at Earl of Sandwich after an early check-in (optimistic, aren't I?) - Jay says he really has a hankering for a Hot Roast Beef Smoothie (please see October 2006 dining and trip reports for explanation). After a light lunch we're going to laze at the pool. We have dinner reservations for 7:30 at Raglan Road. Our goal is to try all four beer flights during our encampment here.
Saturday, May 26th - Today is early EMH at MGM, so I think we would be wise to visit EPCOT, whenever we roll out of bed and make ourselves presentable to the world at large. We're not on any kind of schedule so we'll stay until we're ready to leave. Dinner reservations tonight are for 7:00 at Jiko. We're really looking forward to exploring the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I think once we are finished with dinner we are going to the Adventurers Club - wonder how busy they'll be on Saturday night?
Sunday, May 27th - We have the early slot for Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues: 10:30AM. The other time slot was for 1PM and to my mind that's late for brunch. Hell, that's late for lunch. Today might be another laze at the pool day since our dinner reservations are for 7:00 at Wolfgang Puck's Dining Room. The Magic Kingdom has EMH tonight - their normal closing time is listed at 11PM, so that means they're going to be open until 2AM. Let's go frolic around the MK until we're stupid with sleepiness!
Monday, May 28th - Breakfast is scheduled for 10:00 at Kona Cafe so that Jay can get his Tonga Toast and I can get some coffee. Today might be a good day for MGM...and then again it might not. We're going to let the crowd size determine how much time we spend in the park(s) today. And...dinner tonight is slated for 7:00 at Bluezoo. Afterwards we are going to catch the late EMH at MGM where we hope to finally see a showing of Fantasmic.
Tuesday, May 29th - Happy 8th Anniversary to us! We will be having a romantic light breakfast in the villa...mimosas, coffee, fruit and croissants. We have a couples treatment scheduled for 10:30 at the Mandara Spa located at the Swolphin. By the time we are finished here we should have just enough time to take a dip in the pool before cleaning up for our highly anticipated dinner at Victoria & Albert's where we scored the Chef's Table! Four hours of gastronomic and alcoholic bliss with the man I love...does life get any better?
Wednesday, May 30th - We have nothing planned today until dinner at 7:00 at California Grill. Today we will go where the wind takes us. If there is no breeze then I guess we just won't go anywhere. ;)
Thursday, May 31st - Another open day. We really are trying to relax (and digest) as much as possible on this trip. Jay and I did decide just yesterday to unload our dinner reservation at Rose and Crown, which we love by the way, in favor of Artist Point over at the Wilderness Lodge. We are trying to hit some new restaurants on this trip and AP seemed like a good romantic way to finish off the trip.
Friday, June 1st - Time to go home...:sad1: I know that we usually have a return flight to STL that gets us back in the early afternoon, so I imagine we'll be out of the villa no later than 10AM today. Thank goodness there's a new Harry Potter book to look forward to in July!!
So, there you have it, a slightly more detailed and tweaked plan for our visit next month.
Feel free to drop pearls of wisdom in my virtual lap. :goodvibes

Ooh, sigh....what a lovely trip, and you haven't even taken it, yet! :rotfl2:
Yes, the Adventurers Club should be hopping on a Saturday night, but you
still should be able to see and do what you want there, especially if you
park yourself near the Library doors. (Look at the plaque next to the right
hand closet door. It lists the showtimes. Try to position yourselves there
about 5-10 minutes prior to get seats.
I go there just about every night of my trips, and the only wrench in the plans
is when the AC rents the club out for private events and such, but the club
usually opens at 9pm when that happens. What's my backup plan, you ask?
Comedy Warehouse. I'll go there until the AC opens its doors.
I think you made an excellent choice by changing your Rose and Crown
to Artist Point. I really  the buffalo steak there. But if you want
the cedar plank salmon, that's also good. (But IMHO not as good as the
buffalo!) If they have the portabello mushroom soup on the menu, that's

Yes, the Adventurers Club should be hopping on a Saturday night, but you still should be able to see and do what you want there, especially if you park yourself near the Library doors. (Look at the plaque next to the right hand closet door. It lists the showtimes. Try to position yourselves there about 5-10 minutes prior to get seats.
I go there just about every night of my trips, and the only wrench in the plans
is when the AC rents the club out for private events and such, but the club
usually opens at 9pm when that happens. What's my backup plan, you ask?
Comedy Warehouse. I'll go there until the AC opens its doors.
Thanks for advice on AC, Lori. We are so looking forward to going back there again. We've never been to Comedy Warehouse - you like it? We were able to buy the DVC Pleasure Island unlimited pass that's good through the end of June, so that's certainly an option if we can't get into AC.
I think you made an excellent choice by changing your Rose and Crown to Artist Point. I really  the buffalo steak there. But if you want the cedar plank salmon, that's also good. (But IMHO not as good as the buffalo!) If they have the portabello mushroom soup on the menu, that's also a "must" for me.
I have a feeling Jay will be all over the buffalo steak, as for me I'm not sure what I'll do. Not crazy about salmon and I don't like mushrooms at all. I'm sure I'll figure something out - so many people have raved about this place that I'm really glad we changed our plans.
Wow that all sounds amazing the only thing I saw which I would not be able to do was MK till 2am then up for brekkie at 10am but then I do like my sleep :rotfl2:
I'm not sure we'll make it until 2AM - we're both pretty fond of our sleep, too. If I had to guess, I'd say we might be able to hang on until midnight but that would probably be it. We're not as young as we used to be!! :lmao:

I should explain...I have a chronic problem that I call: "Gotta-do-more-it's-never-enough."
I don't shop early for birthdays and holidays any longer because this condition just means that I end up shopping longer and buying more than I would have if I had just waited until the last minute.
I look at this two ways: on the one hand it denotes generosity, because I really do love to give gifts and surprise friends and family; on the other hand, I think I may be addicted to planning / shopping / spending.
And that leads me to my point, which is this:
I would dearly love to have something romantic and sweet and just-so-Disney waiting in our room when we arrive on May 25th. I can contact WDW Florist and arrange to have Champagne and Mickey flutes and maybe even one of those specialty Mickey Mouse / tuxedo strawberry platters they do over at the BC/BW/YC complex. Wouldn't that be fun?
And then I started thinking that a nighttime carriage ride might be nice. I've always wanted to have a carriage ride.
We were on too tight a budget on our honeymoon in Williamsburg and we didn't take one...and eight years later I'm still waiting for a chance to take a ride with the man of my dreams behind a flatulent horse.
Now that is a recipe for romance! :lmao:

Hiya Brenda,
Just wanted to let you know I have been enjoying your reports!! And reading your pre-trip report for this May, We too, are going to be at WDW May 25-May 31!! :yay:
I was looking at your days planned, and saw that May 26 you have MGM as the EMH? According to the WDW web site its..Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park that has the EMH (morning), and Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park has the EMH ( evening).. I know this may seem like I am nic picking, but my hubby who is more than a Disney Freak than I am has it all planned out!!!:goodvibes
anyways also when I read your report on the "RNR" when you said that you had to take your glasses off, I used to do that, but can't stand not wearing my glasses, so hubby brought what we call.. a corded strap, its not as long as a regular eyeglasses holder, and you can tighten it up and wear it all day. You can find this anywhere, I got mine at Wally World ( Walmart), and saw some last year at the Magic Kingdom, and had to have them...;) here is a link to give you an idea on what they look like http://www.allproducts.com/gift/soaraway/08_eyeglasses_cord.html

Heyy, I’m new to this all but i got excited when i saw that you were going to Disney the same week we are- a complete stranger, but 100% happy. This will be my # 6 since my wife wanted to go on our honeymoon- since then I’ve been Disney obsesed- no family vacation is worth it unless it involves a Disney park. We can escape our busy lives. Last year we visited family on the gulf and could only do the Magic Kingdom one day- we opened and closed the park- with an 8 and 5 year old, and they were wide awake until we got on the monorail to go home- insane! This year we’re going May 26- June 2 in honor of our girls’ birthdays in May. Nevertheless, the best part is that we will be there for our youngest 6th birthday on the 29th- any tips from any one is very welcomed; however, we are on a budget- how can we make this day extra special?

Welcome to the DIS, Welshbelly (great name, by the way) and thanks for posting!
To echo what DisneyDuet said, be sure to stop in at Guest Services at any of the theme parks and get the girls a birthday button. That will really make them feel special! And if you have reservations anywhere, especially at a character meal location, be sure to let them know in advance that you are celebrating a birthday. There are no guarantees that they will do anything, but I've heard that some restaurants will decorate your table, bring out a small birthday dessert, or give a birthday card that's been signed by the characters. If you're staying on property be sure to let the hotel staff know -and you may find a special birthday surprise in your room one day (again, no guarantees, but it can't hurt to let them know.)
That's all I can think of right now. If anyone else has any suggestions feel free to post 'em here. :goodvibes
I hope you have a lovely trip. Be sure to say hello if you happen to see us wandering around in search of a drink. ;)

Well, if you can't go off topic on your own thread, then where can you?
Some of you here may know that Jay and I also have a WDW trip planned for this October. Two trips to the Mousetrap in one year is not typical of us but we were supposed to take a Disney Cruise in October and we had to cancel so we ended up at the World instead. Not that we're complaining because the F&W Festival means good times indeed come October.
But...I'm struggling with the ADR set-up for October and we can start making them on the 18th.
Part of the problem is knowing that we want to take part in some special dining events that will be offered during the Festival but not knowing which days / evenings they might be offered on. I can guess based on events from previous festivals, but it seems like whenever I do that Disney changes everything on me and messes up my finely laid plans.
So, what do I know that we want to do?
Party for the Senses on October 20th
Food & Wine Pairing at Le Cellier (most likely on October 19th)
A Signature Dinner or Exquisite Evening, depending on price and choice
We'd also like to try the following restaurants:
Yachtsman Steakhouse
Flying Fish
Citricos
Bistro Paris
Crystal Palace
Il Mulino
Sci-Fi (lunch and $10 alcoholic milkshake!)
And I must also work in these old stand-bys:
Rose & Crown
Kona Cafe
Afternoon Tea at the Gardenview Lounge
Le Chefs (lunch is the bargain here)
Yacht Club Galley
And somehow we must find the time and extra stomach to eat and drink around the World Showcase...
Oh what is a compulsive over-planner to do???

Brenda-Have you been to Sci-Fi before? If not, my unsolicited advice is don't get anything fancy. It was a little bit disappointing for our family. The set up is great, you know, a drive-in. Your best bet is to order "drive-in" food, i.e., hamburgers, shakes. I think I ordered pasta and it really wasn't that good. It was a fun experience though, so I really blame myself for trying to order restaurant food at a drive-in.

Thanks for the advice. We've never been but thought it would be fun to try - for lunch only. We had dinner there for my daughter's birthday, and we were not impressed at all either. The characters were great, I got a great picture of DD with Piglet), but the food was icky. I ate 2 chicken fingers from the kids part, because the 'adult' food looked gross. Definatly not worth the money for us.
Of course, I come from the land of truly awesome buffets, where you get 4 times the food selection, for a cheaper price.

I returned it to the store today and now I'm totally bummed out. I found a couple of other options on-line at Nordstrom but none of them are available until June or July. :headache:
It's not that I don't have stuff in my closet to wear to dinner at V&A, but I wanted something new and special. Bah! I hate spring and all these pastel dresses.

Okay, after much annoyed shopping, both in store and on-line I've discovered a potential dress that could knock the natural curl right outta Jay's hair if;
1) I start exercising
2) I quit eating so much junk food
3) I lose 10 pounds in six weeks
4) I manage to add a little Florida tan to this cube-farm, operations center skin I've been sporting since late October.
Here's the new dress, which I actually like better than the one I just returned to Ann Taylor this weekend.
http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/ImageGallery/store/Product/Medium/16/_5183436.jpg
I should have it within the week. If this one doesn't fit then that's it - I'm going to have to pick something out of the closet and "make-do".
So, what do you think of this one? Ya think I can carry this off if I actually put a little effort into my hair and make-up for a change? ;)

Off topic, but I don't have a pre-trippie for October yet, and I'm not sure I can juggle that many threads, anyway!
Jay and I have decided on our first round of ADRs for our 10-day October trip. We know that things are going to change a bit once the dates and prices are released for the Food & Wine Festival events this summer, but since I can make our ADRs on April 18th, I thought I'd better get a move-on.
So here they are, because I have no one else to share this with who will really even care that it's taken me two months to figure it out. ;)
Dates of trip: October 15-October 25
Monday, October 15th - no idea when we'll arrive because SW hasn't released its travel dates past August. Dinner will be at the Yachtsman Steakhouse.
Tuesday, October 16th - We will probably graze around the world showcase but I think we're going to try dinner at Il Mulino, the new Italian restaurant that just opened at the Dolphin.
Wednesday, October 17th - Happy Birthday to me! Breakfast at the Crystal Palace and dinner at Bistro Paris. Can't make the ADR for Bistro until we're 30 days out, so this may change if Epcot offers an irresistable specialty / signature dinner on this evening.
Thursday, October 18th - We're leaving this day open for all kinds of reasons. I don't know about you, but seeing all the white space on my calendar for this date makes me nervous. :lmao:
Friday, October 19th - Breakfast at the Kona Cafe and we will be trying for the Le Cellier Food and Wine Pairing that should be offered this afternoon at 3PM.
Saturday, October 20th - Early lunch at Sc-Fi expressly for the purpose of trying a $10 milkshake. We're planning on drowning our canceled-cruise sorrows (the cruise leaves Port Canaveral at 5PM...:sad1: ) at Party for the Senses.
Sunday, October 21st - Dinner at Citricos.
Monday, October 22nd - Diiner at Flying Fish.
Tuesday, October 23rd - Lunch at Chefs de France.
Wednesday, October 24th - Dinner at Rose and Crown.
We left a lot of open space in those last four days which may change when the festival program is announced.
That's it for now! Thanks for reading along. :goodvibes

You can totally pull that off!! In fact, I am shocked that you would have to lose weight to get into that dress. What shoes are you wearing? Maybe black strappy heels? Beautiful dress, Brenda!

Okay, after much annoyed shopping, both in store and on-line I've discovered a potential dress that could knock the natural curl right outta Jay's hair if;
1) I start exercising
Ya think I can carry this off if I actually put a little effort into my hair and make-up for a change? ;)
You go girlie!! That is def. a WOW dress! It's it kinda the same cut as the dress you wore to V&A in October? I think that one was black and kinda golden? I think it will be fantastic!! You should grab a copy of the May issue of Glamour Magazine. They have a workout routine that is super easy and gets results! I am already seeing a difference in my arms after two weeks! I can fax you a copy of the workout if you don't want to whole magazine.

Two words: Turbo Jam. I do the 20 minute workout and Ab Jam and have lost a ton of weight over the last 2 years. 10 pounds is nothing. I think Turbo Jam even promises several pounds lost in the first week.
And I love this dress. I could never pull it off, but I know you can! Can't wait to see the photos!

Love the dress! I think it will look fabulous on you! Great ADR choices for October too. I'm still stuck in October limbo, and it's making me really nervous! I've never had such a difficult time making plans, and I'm blaming it all on my parents coming along. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks, Paige! I have a cute pair of high heeled black sandals that would look great with this dress.
As for the weight - one word: hormones.

It is similar in some ways to that dress I wore at V&A, but this one is more simple and I think will be more comfortable for a long dinner. I love that other dress, but it's heavy (lots of beading - think Flapper Girl!) and a little more form-fitting. I think this new choice will let me eat and breathe simultaneously - always a good thing!
Thanks for the heads up on Glamour - a friend of mine here at work actually has that issue at her desk and I'm going to photocopy some stuff from it and start trying it tonight.
Two words: Turbo Jam. I do the 20 minute workout and Ab Jam and have lost a ton of weight over the last 2 years. 10 pounds is nothing. I think Turbo Jam even promises several pounds lost in the first week.
I will check that out, too. Getting close to crunch time so I'll try anything!

Thanks so much - keep your fingers crossed that this one fits the right way!
Sounds great! So we will join you for Kona, PFTS, all Food and Wine Pairings and Citricos. ;) We are still trying to nail down dates. :headache: Darn those in-laws!!
You just march right on over to those folks and tell them what your plans are, and that said plans include much eating and drinking in a place called EPCOT (every person comes out tipsy). ;)
Hope you can at least make PFTS - it would be a blast to experience that with you guys and hopefully Lori, too.
Love the dress! I think it will look fabulous on you!
Thanks! I hope everyone here is right about that.
Great ADR choices for October too. I'm still stuck in October limbo, and it's making me really nervous! I've never had such a difficult time making plans, and I'm blaming it all on my parents coming along. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I really struggled with the October choices and I'm still not 100% happy with them, but until the Food & Wine stuff is released in July I'll just leave them alone (once I can actually make them, that is).
And I totally sympathize about making choices with the parents - it was so hard last year to try to pick restaurants that offered something everyone would enjoy. And then there's that whole "time" thing. Ugh! It's so much easier when you're planning for two.
You want to hear something funny?
A few years ago Jay and I went on a different vacation with the parents and we had had a late lunch, so no one was really hungry when the traditional dinner hour rolled around.
So we kept wandering around the town we were in, looking in shops, etc, and suddenly my mom pipes up, "When are we going to eat dinner?"
I shrugged and said, "We didn't think you guys were interested in dinner, since we just finished lunch at 2PM. We can stop somewhere if you want; we just didn't think about it because Jay and I really aren't hungry right now."
Mom's lips start to thin (a sure sign that she's annoyed). "Well it's almost 6 o'clock. Jon's hungry!"
Jon's look of blank surprise is priceless, as is his response. "I am?"
Ever since that day, whenever Jay and I are on vacation and it's getting close to time for dinner, Jason will look at his watch and say, "It's 6 o'clock - Jon's hungry!"
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
So not only did I have to worry about picking the right restaurant last year, but I had to make sure the time was just right, too!
Good luck, Lori - you'll be fine!! :goodvibes

I'm practically finished with Day 6... I updated twice over the weekend and then again last night - that's three updates in four days. You are hard to please, aren't you? :lmao:
Actually I haven't done a whole lot over here lately because I'm really trying to get the Argie-bargie finished before we leave next month.
You should go watch Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail. It's hysterical! :thumbsup2
I guess I won't introuduce you to our cat Handsome Pete (like the initials...HP). ;)
Speaking of Mr. Potter... there is a lady here in the office who got tickets from a family memeber who works at AMC to attend an advance screening of Order of the Phoenix.
I don't really know her all that well, but she started asking all kinds of HP questions yesterday which eventually led to the revelation that she was going to get to see the movie at least a month before the rest of us poor schmoes.
I hate her now. :lmao:

Just jumped on your pre-trip thread.
Love the dress, I'm happy it works for you. You looked gorgeous in the previous V&A dress.
I feel like I should send you a commission check. I keep stealing your ideas for activities for my September/October anniversary/last kid just left for college trip. We are doing Mandara, thanks to you, and I'm going to copy again by ordering the champagne and strawberries for the room. (Not interested in the stinky horse this time, will save that for December '08).

BUT, the part we did get to see was as beautiful as always! The veggie garden area amazed us and gave us some great ideas that, like usual, we will promptly forget in about 2 weeks. Must remember to bring my camera next time.

Deb
The festival itself usually begins on the last weekend in September and runs every day through the middle of November.
The extra events - the ones that you have to pay out of pocket for take place on various days / evenings throughout the week.
For example:
Party for the Senses is always on Saturday night.
Sweet Sundays always on Sunday (used to just be the mornings and then last year they added an afternoon session as well)
Certain Epcot restaurants will offer an afternoon food & wine pairing - but only on a given day. Last year Japan was always on Monday; Canada was Friday, Morocco was Tuesday.
The schedule and prices are usually released towards the middle of July and then EPCOT usually begins accepting reservations at 7AM on the morning of July 31st.
Some events like Le Cellier's food & wine pairing are really popular and do sell out within one or two days of reservations being accepted. But other events never sell out at all.
I take the approach that if there is something Jay and I really want to do then I'm calling first thing to try and get it.
Does that help at all?

Just wondering... is it wrong for a 37-year old woman with no children to want a Pal Mickey? And perhaps more importantly...would Plankton be jealous or offended by this potential addition to the vacation menagerie?
For those of you who may be new to the wacky world of travel with Jay and Brenda...Plankton is our vacation mascot.

Yes you need a Pal! He is wonderful. We forgot him on one of our trips last year and I felt lost without him. And what better way for Plankton to take over the world then to get in good with the Mouse who runs it?
BTW Welcome to your Twenties! 29 days to go for you!!
17 for me!!!!!!:dance3:

Because he obviously can't handle the large ones!

Glad you enjoyed it! I was just going to do a before and after shot of Mickey with the beer, but it was my DS 11 who had the idea Mickey should be laying down in the after shot. What kind of example am I setting for my child?!

And by the way, that wasn't my beer; it was my DNephew's. He's 22 and can definitely hold his alcohol WAY better than Mickey!;)

I wonder just how many weird looks we'll get at Artist Point if we do the wine pairings and then also opt for the Grand Marnier and Port flights? I wonder if that's too much alcohol to imbibe the night before we're going to be flying back to St. Louis?
Eh...I don't have to do the Grand Marnier flight. But Grimace would never forgive me if I passed up on a port tasting opportunity.
Port it is!!
Can you tell that I'm sitting at work eating my lunch dreaming about better more tasty things? ;)

WDW Florist...
Although I can't get the pictures from the WDW Florist site to post here I thought I'd share the product descriptions with you so that you can all share in the over-spendy anticipation with me!
28 more days to go!!! :cheer2:
Item #1 - Mickey's Happy Surprise Cake
They take something like 28 Mickey candy bars and make a cake shape with them and then fill the inside of the circle with even more candy (bye bye belt). It's wrapped with ribbons and placed on a cake stand to look just like a birthday cake. I paid extra to have it delivered with a bouquet of birthday balloons because Jay and I love inhaling helium...:lmao:
Just kidding about the helium (although I'm sure we'll take a couple of hits) but I bet you believed me for just a second, didn't you? ;)
Item #2 - Gourmet Extravaganza
I paid extra to have the wine replaced with a bottle of Iron Horse Fairy Tale Cuvee and two Mickey Mouse champagne Flutes. The package is delivered on a wooden Mickey head cheese cutting board and comes with cheese and crackers and chocolates. There's a mickey wine stopper and a mickey cheese spreader and it also comes with a small bud vase and a single red rose.
And I told Jay today that I really would like a Pal Mickey, so we'll see if he processes and retains that information. :goodvibes

All of the goodies sound awesome! :thumbsup2 The Iron Horse is a great choice. We get the Wedding Cuvee at home, but it just doesn't compare to the Fairy Tale! Speaking of Fairy Tale, did you ever PM Fairy_Tale_Bride to help you put something together? I was going to have her do something for us in October...
-Michelle
P.S. I hope Jay gets you your Pal Mickey! :goodvibes
