I haven't been around here much over the past several months. Things have been crazy around my house. I've been reading photography books as much as possible and saving for some additional equipment, training our beagle puppy, & just generally trying to get things in order around my house. We made over our office so I have a place my all of photography stuff and a place for me to work.
Anyway, I thought I'd try a show me thread for inspiration. I know some of you out there own the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens. I have been saving for months, and last Friday, I ordered it! :woohoo: I am soooooo excited! It should arrive at my house on Wednesday, but I will probably have to go pick it up from UPS on Thursday. Anyway, I am going nuts waiting for it to arrive, so I would love it if anyone out there who has one of these (or one of the similar versions - non-IS or f/4) would post something they've taken with theirs. That way I will have inspiration for when it arrives. I am just so anxious! Thanks!

I am in the process of saving up for the 70-200 f/2.8. What made you go for the IS version? Was it concerns about hand holding the size/weight, wanting to do longer exposures or just because you are worth it! I'm more interested in what your thinking was BEFORE you bought it because I'm sure after you get it its easy to justify the extra cost.

Because I'm worth it, of course! :rotfl:
Seriously though, I had actually tried out the non-IS version at a Wolf Camera when DH and I were up in Chicago one weekend a while back. They mounted it on a tripod for me to try out. I thought at that time, how often will I really hand-hold that lens? It's huge! But, after spending more time on these boards seeing other's examples, taking photos at Festival of the Lion King & the safari at AK and not quite having enough reach/speed, and shooting a wedding last April, I decided there would definitely be times when I would be holding that lens! Maybe not for long periods of time, but I would be holding it. I am trying to get into professional portrait photography, and I actually just learned today that I will be shooting a friend's wedding in July, so I think I made the right choice. It was definitely about hand holding that size/weight for me.

while i have sworn off IS for a while i can see it for that lens...mine is about 1/2 the weight and heavy enough..with the 70-200 f2.8 IS, a flash etc you are talking hefty enough weight i wonder how easy it would be to use for any length of time hand held ( at least i know for me it would not be possible) as mine shake enough with the f4( that's abnormal i know) i bought a monopod

I do have both a monopod and tripod. I will be using those at the wedding as much as possible. At AK however, I will not have either of those on Kilamanjaro or at Festival of the Lion King, so we'll see how that goes! I am sure it is a beast! But I can't wait!

Great photos!!! Thanks to all for posting them!
Well, I picked up the lens at UPS last night! I just laughed when I pulled it out of the case. It's HUGE! :rotfl: It had been so long since I had seen it in person, I had forgotten just how huge it is. Actually, based on my fuzzy recollection of the non-IS version's weight, I thought it would be heavier than it was. It's heavy - don't get me wrong! I was just expecting worse. So, I took a few shots, realized I didn't even have that sucker opened up all the way, tried some more, added my flash unit, tried some more... DH tried it out when he got home as well. I will post a few of the photos I took later on tonight.
Thanks again! :)

I'm renting one for an event in April and can't wait. It's on my wishlist and as soon as I save enough, it's mine!

Here's a few of the first pictures I took with the new lens last night and tonight. My cat and dog are usually my first models when I get something new. I experiment on them a lot!

I bought the IS version because the IS is very useful for a lot of the shooting I do. I'm often shooting from inside a canoe, while going for a walk with the family, or on other outings where I can't or won't use a tripod. In many of those situations, the IS allows me to use a lower ISO or to get shots that I otherwise couldn't get.
Here are a few of my shots with my 70-200 f/2.8 IS:

Very nice panning technique. My recent sledding pictures did not turn out nearly as nice. Does this lens have the IS mode for panning? If so, do you remember if you used it here?

It does have a panning mode. However, I can't pan to save my life. This shot was taken with a high shutter speed to freeze the action. Then cut out the boys and sled, applied motion blur, and pasted them back on.

I will try that tonight if I have time and post results.

Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing. And what a great idea on the motion blur. I will have to remember that.

Well...
... here are a couple shots taken with a humble 70-300 IS (the $600 one). I openly confess to coveting the 70-200 2.8 IS... and I've even sampled it on my old 10D... but I'm waiting for the 30D replacement as my next major purchase. Anyways... be kind in your remarks for the poor cousin shots here taken on a Mexican cruise last year (above) and on Barbados for a Disney cruise (below)...
