Ok- I didn't google. I am going from memory here so I could be toadily wrong .... but my understanding is that gold is a soft metal. The karats determine how pure and durable (more pure, less durable it is)... not the color...

for example my wedding band is 14K and it is green gold (yep, I had never heard of it either until I was surprised by my sneaky boyfriend (now wonderful DH) and it needs to be refinished all the time too (I actually gave up after I had it done twice while we were engaged). I would have prefered a 10K ring just so it would be more durable.

Other metals, however have differing strengths.

There is no such thing as green gold!
There are however gold alloys which appear green.
When jewellers speak of green gold, they mean green gold alloys.
Gold Alloys
Gold itself is a yellow metallic element but, in its pure form, it is too soft to be used for general jewellery purposes, although there are some cultures which do wear pure gold jewellery, it would need to be heavily made and carefully used. The yellow colour of gold is caused by gold absorbing violet and blue light, but reflecting yellow and red light.
It is usual for gold to be mixed with other metals to produce an alloy, which is simply a mixture of two or more metals. Throughout history, most people have preferred the colour of gold jewellery to remain close to that of pure gold itself, and so most jewellery has historically been made using yellow gold alloys. Duh Joe. The alloy part was implied. Pure gold wouldn't make good jewelry because it would be so soft you could bend it. See your article says so!:thumbsup2 Thanks for the info- I always thought my ring was "softer" than 14K yellow gold- looks like I am right.

Sparky- my ring looks "buttery"- kind of a soft yellow. Very pretty. Of course it doesn't match anything but since I don't wear much jewelry it doesn't matter so much.

Because it isn't that I am a heavy metal fan so much (:laughing: Alan!)... it is more that I have a slight allergy to lots of metal alloys. DH thinks I am making it up:rolleyes: but I turn interesting colors when I don't wear silver or gold. Stainless steel works fine too.

But I thought DH was making up his supposed allergy to most brands of deterrgent. I secretly switched his (never on sale) brand for something cheaper..... and then his skin started peeling off!:eek: I only did the whites:confused3 So now I use the right detergent and he only buys real gold or silver. :thumbsup2

Do you wear it everyday? I just ask because DH's ring (matches mine therefore also 14K green gold) has worn a little better but he doesn't wear it all the time. However his did lose a diamond once. :headache: Our rings will be 10 this summer:)
